One word; Biodynamics! This is a great area the wine world is going. I first discovered this type of wine making with Quintessa in Rutherford. Wow. Dedication to the grapes, and the earth.

Never hear of this producer but seems to be doing things out of belief rather than market and trend, seems to make more old world style wines which shows that its possible to do sin in Cali. I like it

Tony Coturri! Nice guest Gary. I carry a couple of his wines where I work as well, the albarello and one of his pinot’s.
Nice to see you tasting his charbono on there as well. I’ve done a decent bit of research on charbono, and have heard a few stories as to its origins (not unlike the different stories concerning where zinfandel came from.). But I’ve never heard about it being a cross between nebbiolo and grenache, curious.
I’ve only had the Coturri charbono one time, I don’t remember being blown away by it. At the time, the Summer’s had been all I had to compare it to at that point, if memory serves. I do remember that acidity on it that you guys remarked on. But I also remember the color being quite a bit lighter than I had expected. Although it wasn’t the 04 vintage like you guys tasted, it was either the 05 or 06.
Anway, another great episode, would love to see you dedicate an episode to charbono, and do a tasting. Maybe stack the Coturri up against the Summer’s and few other of the small handful of producers making charbono.

Thanks for the pointer to this episode, I’ve tried to hit all of the gaps but this one slipped through. As someone who makes wine at home, I have to say that the winemaker interviews are very interesting and quite invaluable where even the smallest tidbits of information are shared. Please keep them coming.
