Today Gary Vaynerchuk tastes 4 different wines all scored 90 points or higher. This is a great episode and one that we think will drive a lot of comments. Enjoy the Chardonnay’s and Barolo.

    Woohoo #1 today !

Can’t really decide on the best 90+, but the worst by far is Panarroz Red 2004 (Library Code: 1184 – $6.49 at WL).

It was very acidic with no structure. I even let it breathe for a few hours but didn’t help at all. I just basically dumped it down the sink.

I expected more quality given the rating, even though the price made me a little skeptical. I sometimes where RP pulls these ratings from.

    Great episode, BTW !

best and worst hunh? first, what the hell is the deal with the birds? sounds like you are doing the show from the big bird cage at the NJ zoo….anyway, best 90 pointer…hmmm…it would be one that you recomemded gary “Stephan Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon 2003″….it was just exceptional and i have been wishing that i had bought a case…as is i have 2 bottles set back. okay, now the worst…well, i can’t really say that i have ever had a horrible one, but there is a RP 90 that i was disappointed in: “Di Majo Norante Sangiovese Igt 2004″
    i mean, it wasn’t horrible….i just didn’t care for it much….
    good episode

    Gary,

    1. What’s up with the birds? It was pretty funny to hear them in the background

    2. Give your IT guy a break. I work in IT myself and it’s pretty stressful. Next thing you know he’ll refer to you as DFU. If you don’t know what it means, ask him..

    See you Wed for bball..

    Gary,

I have to agree that the birds got a bit distracting, but not the end of the world.

Best 90+ wine? Well, there are probably several, but the one that pops out of my head is the 2001 Guigal Chateauneuf du Pape. 93 pts WS, #41 of 100 top wines of 2003. Not overrated by any means. Buoght this from you (you still have it in stock, for those that are interested). Incredible Chat du Pape, amazing complexity and earthiness. One of my favorite wines of all time, and a real bargain for under $30. (See, I’m trying to help you sell wine… I’ll take my commission “in kind”.)

I honestly can’t remember a 90 pointer that I’ve hated. Don’t get me wrong, there have been several, but I just wrote them off and moved on, so I don’t remember what they were.

However, I’ll tell you the BEST 69 point wine I’ve ever had (and I’ll come to the defense of BV in the process) – the 2001 BV Georges de Latour Private Reserve. WS absolutely panned this wine. 69 points is just vindictive given that the “100 point scale” really starts at 70.

Anyway, when I bought the bottle I was just getting into wine and I knew 2 things:

    1. Georges de Latour was supposed to be a top of the line CA cab, and
    2. 2001 was supposed to be a top vintage.

After I paid $70 for the bottle I heard about the WS review. I held on to the bottle until my parent’s 54th anniversary last May. I warned them that this wine had gotten “mixed” reviews. Well, it was superior. Silky smooth, fully integrated tannins, well balanced fruit. No chalkiness, no 69 point badness. At least what you’d expect for a $70 CA cab. Extremely nice.

Best 90+…a toss up between 1997 Joly Coulee de Serrant and the 70′ Taylor vintage port…

worst…wow, the list is long, but maybe the prize has to go to all of those ‘96 oxidized white burgs in my cellar that I’ve been pouring down the drain lately….ouch….

Best and worst? That is definitely a tough call. Well, I think I can definitely talk about the worst. I had bought the 2004 Pannaroz Jumilla from Spain based on its cheap price and 90 point rating from RP. While it was not expensive, it definitely did not deserve a 90 point rating. The acidity level was definitely high and was unbalanced on a whole.

Best 90 point wine is a little tougher. The one that comes to mind immediately was the 2002 Ehlers Estate Merlot from Napa. I think it was #47 in the 2005 WS Top 100 list. It was an amazing wine and was only around $30. It was well structured with nice fruit and a smooth finish and the nose was fantastic.

Keep up the great work and the questions Gary!

Dude… you gotta lay off the origami. Best wine I ever had was the first wine I ever really liked, a 1990 Chateau d’Yquem.

    Sam Zen

Best 90 point wine… hmmm, I really liked the 2001 shotfire Ridge. Just couln’t go wrong with that price… and teh wine could be had solo or with almost any meal. It was exotic and balanced. Just wonderful. It’s one of my favorite everyday wines.

I’ll think about the best, but I will agree with some of the above comments about the worst. Had to be one of those cheap RP-90 Spanish reds that tasted like what I imagine Draino cough medicine to be….

    Oragami? Cmon….
Best 90+ wine – 1994 Montelena Estate. I had it in a restaraunt in Granite Bay, CA with my wife and you couldn’t get it anywhere at the time. We talked the waitress into selling us three more bottles to take home.
Can’t say what the worst is but I have a recent story. My wife and I were in San Francisco and stumbled on a liquor store with Stag’s Leap in the window. The guy shows me this back room FULL of anything you could want. Cote du Nuits, Bordeaux, and large format bottles of Ca Cults. So he talks me into a 1994 Stonestreet Christopher’s Vineyard. $150.00. We save it for a couple of months and opened it in Tahoe…..Suuuuucked.
It was probably a good $40 bottle, but a $150.00? Buying wine in the city is probably a horrible idea anyway…live and learn!

I bought that same 2004 Pannaroz Jumilla that two people above list as the worst–and I whole heartedly agree. It was so awful, such vinegar, that it shook my faith in your ratings and stopped me dead from ordering from Wine Library for some time.

  15. July 27, 2006

By the way…You should make the episodes more BLOG style so we can comment to each other…

TONY…I’m pretty excited you say that about the Guigal, I have the exact bottle in the Cellar. And totally agree on the BV Georges, we had that bottle a few weeks back and it was Phenominal. I don’t understand what Laube was thinking?

    Gary,

Worst wine I ever had with a 90+ score was the Noblaie Chinon Rouge 2003. I saw it on your site and WS gave it 91 pts. Now I am a huge fan of Cab Franc from France…but this one flat out sucked. Tasted medicinal, too much acid, no fruit and no amount of decanting could help it. Honestly, it tasted like a diaper full of spicy Thai food that had been sitting out in 100 degree heat for 3 days.
Best: 2003 Kilikanoon Convenant Shiraz. Parker actually got this one right at 94 pts and for about 30 bones, I quickly snagged a few more up.

    Gary,

The Panarroz Red 2003 was awful for a RP 90 point wine. Someone gave it too me as a gift. I tasted it! Then poured it down the drain where it belonged. I never told them how bad it was. Hopefully they won’t give it too me again.

    Hey Gary,

I agree with Eric-the dark shirt makes it harder to appreciate the color of the reds on WLTV.

And, on the topic of color, are there any wines that are really “Black”?
I mean, dark purple, inky sure, but isnt black really devoid of all color? :)

Keep up the great entertainment. Regarding your question of the day, i’ve had many many great 90+ point wines, but the ‘95 Insignia isnt close to Parker’s 98 rating….a solid low 90 pointer at best…..the Pillar Box 2004 i thought was a real clunker and not worthy of Parker’s rave…

Jack that wasn’t A WL rating it was RP’s, so please order from us again :) , honestly the Pannaroz is taking a beating, I need to try a bottle asap

Here is a little tip…………Stop listening to WS, RP, ST, and GV. Wine is all acording to your tatse……not theirs. Drink and stick to what you enjoy. It’s ok to do the reading to find out what is hot and what is not, but do not believe the hype……….And Gary, how about a game of horse?

    Gary,

Another good episode today; keep it going!

The worst RP 90 point wine I had was Angus the Bull 2002; it was too hot, bitter and just plain nasty. I carried a dozen different wines with me on a Caribbean cruise and no one like it; there were 8 of us. The best RP 90 point wine I had was Chateau La Chapelle de la Mission 2000. What a beautiful drinking wine, wonderfully complex, well balanced fruit – acidity – alcohol, wrapped around integrated tannins. Absolutely delicious; I’d wish I had purchased 5 cases of this wine instead of 6 bottles. We had it during a surf and turf bbq in my backyard and I loved it. There were 6 of us and we had it along with other bottles of Bordeaux which were all Second Growth wines. Yet, the Chapelle de la Mission stood out in my mind!

Another great episode Gary. My best 90 pointer was a tie between the 1997 Beringer Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve Napa Valley (91 WS – 94 ST) and the 1997 Shafer Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select Napa Valley (95 ST) both wonderful rich and complex. Thank God for expense accounts ;-) My worst? The 1995 Beringer Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve Napa Valley, amazing the difference in vintage years can have (and I had it on two separate occasions no less.)

  25. July 27, 2006

Most overrated: 2003 Fairview Goats Do Roam Red. This backwash received a 90 from WS…I was floored how lame the wine tasted! Fortunately, it was only $11.00. Most underrated: 2002 d’Arenberg Footbolt Shiraz. I believe it received an 88 from WS, however, it tasted far superior to other 90+ Aussie shiraz I’ve had. Just have to mention the best $20.00 Merlot I’ve ever had recently: 2001 Opolo vineyards…unbelievable!

  26. July 27, 2006

    Buddy

I don’t usually buy wine based on points but often when choosing a mixed case , a 90+ under $15 wine is tempting. most come from RP. I have quit his picks. Most of his picks are crap. After long thought of the best 90 point wine, some of the Mondavi district cabs have been awesome. Tons of great wine is not rated well.

  27. July 27, 2006

    Chris

These are within the last year since I can’t remember anyfarther into the past.
Worst – 1989 Ch. Clerc-Milon – It tasted like filtered through a sweatsock filled with wet rocks. Not good.

Best – 1997 Val di Suga (Angelini) Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Spuntali – An awsome brunello.

Glad to see you like the Cantlys since I bought a case from WL.

  28. July 27, 2006

Gary – try not to use the word “sucked” – it cheapens your presentation.

Do you empty the wine bucket between shows?

If so, one show might be dedicated to the ‘re-tasting’ of the COMBINED 3-4 bottles of wine you review each show, by tasting what’s in the bucket from the prior show.

While not able to purchase this ‘eSpecial Vintage’ it would serve for a rare experience… and a likely very different explanation of the flavor notes and taste profile.

    Gary,
Basketball…with a name like Vaynerchuk you should be playing some hockey..so we purchased some of the Catena Chard last week up here in the great NorthWest….btw….you been out here to check out the fantasatic wineries??? Blow your mind….so Catena….think you might of had a bad bottle…the one we are drinking is excellent….at least a 90!!
    Love your show…keep it up!!

    JohnM

    Gary-
I didn’t mind the sucked comment, BUT, the sotto voce “oh man!” comment when smelling the BV said it all! Keep it up! Still thinking about the best worst, but the best recommendation so far from WL for me has been the Coturis. The Red is amazing!

  33. July 27, 2006

    Fernando Gouvea

Well, one that just didn’t do it for me recently was the Annick Parent Bourgogne Rouge that got 91pts from Dennis Iavarone. Mostly just acid, it tasted like. But it could have been a bad bottle.

The Pannaroz that everyone is panning… we had a bottle, and we found it pretty good. Again, there might be a lot of bottle variability.

The best is hard to place. I kind of liked the Kosta Browne Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir this year, but there have been many other 90+ wines that were quite good.

I agree with you on Wine & Spirits; they seem less captive to the “Parkerized” style, which often means they find good stuff that WS and RP haven’t really noticed. How about Decanter; what do you think of *them*?

  34. July 27, 2006

    garybee

    Hi Gary,
Was it “bring your birds to work day”? I seemed to hear lots of chirping going on during the show.
Best 90 point or better wine…1989 Leonetti Merlot. Big for a merlot, but smooth as silk. Though I think that Leonetti has slipped a bit over the last few years.
Worst 90 point or better wine…1994 Opus One. Rather plain and nondescript. It was OK, but I’ve hade plenty of $20 to $40 wines that I’ve liked MUCH more.
    Take care,
    Gary Beesley

  35. July 27, 2006

    E

Best: Roches Neuves Saumur-Champigny … WS91, under $15, delicious raspberry tobacco goodness (but then again I liked the Raffault Chinon, so what do I know).

Worst: Castano Monastrell or the Footbolt (not so much ‘bad’ as thoroughly boring and forgettable … feh!) or the Jester (all oak and heat – like trying to drink a campfire).

Speaking of heat … it’s the middle of the summer and no roses yet?

  36. July 27, 2006

    Paul

Best 90 pointer, by far the ‘01 Shingleback Shiraz McLaren Vale. Drank and gave away cases of it from 10/03 to 11/05 (peaked in early ‘05), everyone loved it. Honorable mention goes to the ‘98 (yes, ‘98) Clos Pegase Cab. Spectator 87, I thought it was far better.

Worst, the ‘99 Cantina Zaccagninni Montepulciano D’Abruzzo. When I was finally able to un-pucker, I poured the rest down the drain. Wouldn’t even use it to braise short ribs I was cooking that night.

The last few episodes have been REALLY entertaining! And by the way, if a wine “sucks”, use the word. Next, you’ll offend someone by saying “crap”, then “undrinkable”. DON’T BE PC!

  37. July 27, 2006

    Bill Ross

Best 90pt wine – might have been La Palazzola ‘00 Merlot, Umbria IGT, which made me a fan of several well made Italian Merlots.
Worst? Well I love Spanish reds but don’t know where RP came up with some of his ratings. I have only found two which drank worse than the Panarroz Jumilla, and they weren’t as highly rated.

Holy crap the star folding is addictive and soothing all at the same time…like sudoku.
I think lately my favorite 90 pt. (IWC) wine is the 2001 Bodegas El Cigarral Pago del Ama Coleccion Vino de la Tierra. BOOM is the first thing I said after tasting it.
    Least favorite…hhhmmmmmmm
I think I have been lucky lately. *** knock on wood.
I love the aviary you have added to your office to. It brings a nice touch to the episode!!! Tweet tweet.

The Allegrini 2001 Palazzo della Torre was a 90 pointer and a top 100 of 2005 for WS. Plenty of fruit, a nice rush of acidity, floral and mineral qualities, measured oak and a long smooth finish. Loved it.

Most of the bad 90+ were all too easy to forget. The latest nightmare was the Château Sainte Gemme Haut-Médoc 2000. Unbalanced, bitter, and one dimmensional.

Oh and if a wine sucked, say it. Conversely if a wine is of a terroir driven style and elegantly balanced on a gossamer thread of nuanced complexity and ethereal dimension, say that too. (However this kind of talk may lead too something crazy like doing origami).

    Hey Gary!

The worst 90+ point wine in recent memory has to be Dunn Howell Mountain Cabernet, it really sucked!! BTW I do not beleive that your use of the word cheapens your presentation. Best one in recent memory would be Saint Cosme Gigondas Valbelle 2003 cuvee. I makes th syrahs from Saxum, Cayuse and like taste like great grape juice…give it a try!
    Cheers!

Gary….I think using the word “Sucked” is absolutly acceptable. I think it’s a word that describes, at least for me, too many things wrong to go into it. It should probably be reserved for wine that has no chance (Which your doing quite nicely.) And lets face it, getting laid after sharing a bottle of wine is just another great wine experience a lot of us have!!! So..I think it’s all presented very classy…you do push the envelope, but just far enough. Or maybe you should wear a stuffy corduroy jacket and pick up a british accent, and use words like “Bollocks” and “Bloody Hell”. Maybe that’ll classy up the joint!

I am a huge fan of Spanish Wine. In fact I have some wonderful memories of camping on the beaches in southern Spain years ago drinking Spanish wines you open with a Coke bottle opener.

However, most of my big disappointments are Spanish wines for which RP has gone overboard. (There are a few cough syrup Aussies he has rated a bit high as well) Probably the worst in recent times was the Desc. D J. Palacios Petalos del Bierzo D.O. 2004. RP gave this up to 93. To me it was a tannic cardboard sandwich with a little tightly closed fruit in the middle.

So many good 90+ point wine experiences – and how do you rate a 90 pointer with value vs a 98 pointer that you paid $150 for. too hard.

Much easier to have a level playing field and disucss the most dissapointing 90 pointer (sans corked bottles which can happen to the best). I think it was the Marquis Phillips 2003 Shiraz that Parker gave 90 points too. His writeup was so fnatastic and the wine so cheap (I think about $11 at WL) that I bought a case without trying it. It was so hot, and one dimensional. Grape juice with Vodka. I gave 3 a try, and cooked with the rest. I love Parker in Bordeaux – and Napa- but believe Parker overrates Australia.

Sorry Miles (”Sideways”) but two of the three best 90+ wines I ever had were Merlots. The first was the 1982 Petrus, WA98 and WS96. The second was the 1993 Castello di Ama L’Apparita, WS96. The third (non-Merlot) was the 1970 Vega Sicilia Unico Gran Riserva, WA96 and WS92. And best of all, they didn’t cost me anything. The Petrus was a result of being in the right place at the right time and the other two were gifts.

Hey Gary….get used to seeing the Italian Stallion give comments on your shows….I think your great….First off, I hate Steve Tanzer. He under-rates the wines to set himself apart from Suckling and Parker….I feel your reviews are dead on balls accurate

    Hi Gary,
Just getting back into WLTV; I had “sobered up” after the Mondavi episode, but couldn’t resist the newer ones. Sorry to say, but it pleases me when BV gets a bad review. A few weeks back, on my way to class @ NYU, I stopped in at Astor wines where they were holding a tasting of 4 BV wines with the winemaker present. He completely ignored my standing before him for 5 minutes, serving others around me who had arrived later. He then proceeded to take a jab at my youth, laughing with two other tasters whom he had previously known. Eventually one of the store employees served me after the winemaker checked my i.d., returned it, and continued his conversation with complete disregard for my presence, wine snobbery at its worst. Thus, I shall never purchase a bottle of BV wine, rejoicing at the sight of bad reviews. BTW the chardonnay was one of the wines offered that day; I am glad to know that my perception of the wines uneventful and slightly medicinal nuances was correct. Oh yeah, I’m 22 and after reading “Wine for Dummies Cover to Cover” I’ve had the bug for a year or so now. It’s very disheartening to have such experiences; luckily they’ve never occurred in your establishment.

I recently tried Excelcior Cab Sauv 2004, South Africa. It got a 90 from Parker but I felt like I was drinking a bottle of chocolate. It was much better after airing out overnight. The chocolate stayed, but other flavors appeared.

    Gary,

Enjoying your videos – trying to make some time and go back and watch some older ones. Haven’t decided on worst or best 90+, but the Panarroz definitely was no where near a 90 – ok, drinkable, maybe, but a pass even at $6.49. J

ust tried the Rosenblum Petite Sirah I picked up a few weeks ago. Very good – will cellar the remaining – maybe even pick up a few more. Keep up the good comedy.

PS. I haven’t recommended you to 150, but more than I can count on one hand – I’m all for free wine deals!!

Too many good 90+ point wines tasted to list but bad ones stick. The Pannaroz makes my list of bad ones. I tasted the Catena at the Sante Fe Wine and Chle Fiest and couldn’t believe it had gotten a 90 from anyone. It was one of the hotter Chardonnays I have tasted.

Thanks Gary. Very helpful when I watch your tastings. I like that I can quickly tell if you like the wine by how your head moves while you’re diving in to the bucket! Side to side or up and down…before you even say a word!

Worst: 1990 Pio Cesare Ornato Barolo.( a 95 Parker score).I have had other vintages and love this wine but not this vintage or not this bottle.
I expected big things when I came across this bottle. Opened it for a friend’s birthday… waited & tasted, waited and tasted…3 hours and 2 different bottles later, it never did open up to anything..Disapointment.
Best: Many many great bottles over the years…but the surprise for me was a 1997 Grgich Yountville Cab.Kept opening, expanding.Gorgeous…

It is nice to see how you evolve after #59, the naughty Gary is taking over. Kudos, kinda like that!

QOTD: worst? Difficult choice, I had a WS 96 Chiara Boschis Barolo Cannubi in october. Was very excited about it, and man, what a bottle of junk was this. You know the supermarket style Barolos? Even they were better (nothing wrong with sup-market wines though): unbalanced, searin sour tannins, fruit completely dried out, no focus or poise, and virtually no nose … yuk! Gave the sink a good time. Second worst on the list: RP 94 Chante Cigale CdP Red 2003. Same story: did not open up, even after 2 hours in decanter, a huge oak monster, oak tea in fact, unpleasantly bitter mid palate (somewhat like stewed coffee), very faint fruit (a bit plastic, undefinable mix between Grenache and Syrah). Third worst: Leffe 9°, the new Leffe beer, got 92 from some Belgian beer critic. No means, this is suppossed to be a food beer, ‘to be combined with fine food’, … what? This tastes so ARTIFICIAL: applejuice, sour butter and in the end a very unpleasant tinge of junk mustard. Smells like garbage and rotting onions (you know – no probab. you don’t :-P – beer can be stinky, but in a good way, think of an old Gueuze). Gave it a try three times and was never able to finish a glass. Appalling! Anyway, InBev makes money, no beer.
Okay, wen’t of my head there. Best experience 90+: Morris Farms Avvoltore Rosso Maremma IGT 2004, just the best Merlot I have ever had. Not a cheap one, OK, but not really expensive either. Very profound and brooding, but with so mmuch joy around the corner. Unforgetable. Or, Poliziano Vino Nobile di M. 2003, Veronelli 90, very animal and terroir driven, dark fruit, smoky, brushwood and all that jazz, … bit of a metaphysical wine.

You said you notice additions to old blogs so I thought I would give a comment.

I have been working my way through all your blogs starting at episode #1. I understand your show much better now after watching how the show has developed. I like the crazy you much better.

QOTD – Best 90 point wine is 1970 Domaine de Chevalier. Worst is 2003 Hecula

The best wine that I had that *should* have been a 90+ wine was a Heartland 2002 cab/sauv. I don’t know if it was ever rated, but if it had been, I’m sure it would have made the list.

Best that I didn’t want to like: Baron Rothschild Almaviva 2001
Worst that I WANTED to like: Maurice Ecard Savigny-les-Beaune Les Jarrons 2000

QOTD – Worst – Kendall Jackson 1997 Stature Cab. Nothing but tannin, way too dry without much fruit.

Best – 2001 Joseph Phelps Insignia. Most incredible thing I have ever tasted.

Qotd – I don’t think I’ve had any terrible 90+ wines but I’ve had a lot that were way overrated – Columbia Crest 2 Vines Shiraz comes to mind. Best wine over 90 – too many to decide. Good episode.

QOTD: I don’t even know GV. I’ve truly taken the Vayniac doctrine and I don’t look for scores. I just drink some wine and see if I like it or not.

With this one you’re requesting comments and interaction, so here goes. How about a charbono or vin jaune episode/tasting?
qotd: best-Chateau Petrus {almost a no-brainer right?}, worst-actually not sure, dont pay as much attention to points as I should perhaps. In fact, I’m just assuming that ‘96 Petrus got more than 90 points.
And WOW, your 3rd BV wine on here already if memory serves! I really hope by the time I catch up that you haven’t gone through their whole porfolio. I’m surprised they even warranted 1 appearance. Just seems like there’s better options out there for the price then stuff like that or Rosemount and that ilk.

And please don’t apologize BV has a history, but they’ve hopped on the mass market bandwagon. Great wines for some people, my mom loves the stuff. Not trying to be stuck up either, I’m drinking an $8 Cab right now.
Also, really seems like you’re in the back of a pet store in this episode, with all the bird chirping sounds lol.
Great episode, you’ve definitely ,ade the transition, Imentioned in the episode before, but I love the confidence you’re exuding now

p.s. not so sure I’m gonna start folding any oragami stars.
