Nice tour. Love those tropical fish.

Best cab: 1992 Chateau Montelena Napa Valley Estate Reserve. Tasted several months ago. Absolutely singing now.

Best Cabernet based wine I ever had was the 1994 Chateau Montelena Estate. Also was part of my “Best” wine stories from your first question….So I’ll give a close second. The 1996 Chateau St. Jean Cinq Cepage was so delicious. It could have been the hype, it could have been that we cheated and recieved more than our allotment, it could have even been the price, but all those put together with an absoltuly perfectly balanced wine that thumbed it’s Sonoma nose at Napa made it a close number 2….sadly I only have one bottle left.

Thanks for the mention on the graphics!

Thanks for the tour! How many bottles do you guys have on stock? And: What was with all the corks today?

What are the odds that we’d be bashing Bedell this morning and you’d put it in a tasting? Probably better chance of the Jets winning a superbowl! Just kidding…

It’s great to hear about NY wines. I once had some wine from the Finger Lakes that was about 10 years old (at the time…and I can’t remember what it was), but my co-workers and I were actually quite suprised by it. It didn’t totally blow us away, but it still had some fruit and balance and was just a nice little wine.

My overall favorite Cab based wine, which I’ve had at 3 tastings and 1 dinner (by a very generous client) has to be the 86 Mouton. I can’t afford it, so I’ll probably never get it again, but man….nothing has been better to me.

    Go Bears.

TIM IT WAS INSANE, I almost didnt want to put the video up thinking the same thing. I wish there was a way, and I am sure my IT guys can figure it out to show you we taped this earlier today before any of the comments. I actually wish I loved it and then we would have alot to talk about!

Best Cab is 2001 Beringer Private Reserve.

    Hi again Gary,

As a New Yorker i have been consistently disappointed with “our” wines…for $20 you can have stinker after stinker….maybe someday that will change

You mentioned Idaho and i had a solid Idaho cab in Utah last winter-Snake River Vineyards 2001 or 2, very nice and surprised the heck out of me

Your ? of the day for me is easy to answer, having had the access to my in-laws’ cellar.

I have had many great Cal Cabs or Blends-the Insignia 1992 comes to mind…but for me Bordeaux is “it”, and the Latour 1961 (yes, 1961 IN MAGNUM!) was, and will always be numero uno

Just recently came across your site (actually from a link to your “Carlo Rossi” episode) Spent the better part of my lunch hour catching up, and all I can say is “Keep them coming!”.

    Best Cabernet…
Caymus Special Selection 2003 – Had this at a business dinner a few months back (obviously I wasn’t paying) and it was just wow; silky, balanced, and all that jazz.

Oh, let me echo others in previous episodes a request a port tasting!

The best cab I ever had was the amazing Chateau Leoville Barton 2000. Tasted like nothing I ever had…

Best Cab wine: ‘86 Cos d’Estournel in March of this year decanted and served with a six course meal I cooked for my wife on a big birthday (not allowed to say which). The wine was in many ways still quite young after all those years but with extra notes that comes with maturity–just like us.

  15. August 3, 2006

    GeneV

Did not want to mix the nice memory of the Cos and my wife with a wine bashing, but we tasted at quite a few wineries on Long Island about 6 years ago, and I was quite underwhelmed. They kept displaying “gold medals” and the like, but I found few efforts that were even drinkable, much less “winners.” I hope things have changed. Appropos Gary’s tasting, the reds were the weakest.

Next trip east, I have to stop by the WL. The store looks like it would be a blast.

  16. August 3, 2006

Another good episode GV. NY wines are definitely hit or miss. I actually just went on a tour of LI wineries last month and found that the white wines totally outperform the reds, at least of the ones that I tried. LI also produces some wonderful dessert wines that are made from late harvest riesling grapes. Definitely check them out if you have not had the opportunity to do so.

Best cab based wine was a 2000 Joseph Phelps Insignia that we had for my friend’s engagement party. In fact it may have been the best wine overall that I have ever had. It was so well structured and the finish was amazing. Definitely include that one in your high end cab tasting!

    Gary -

Big fan…but you’ve got to do us all a favor. You need to get your head a good bit into that spit bucket so we are spared the visual of the wine streaming out of your mouth. That’s a bit much, even when the wines suck.

  21. August 3, 2006

Best cab (my wine budget more limited) was:

    2001 Beringer Private Reserve Cab

    kjb

I echo Rich S’s comments and found LI whites to show better than the reds… I thought Paumanok had some pretty good reds, particularly the Grand Vintage wines and bordeaux style blend named Assemblage…

Best cabernet based wine was a 1985 Sassicaia, in Magnum that my boss purchased for our group during a holiday lunch at Felidia in NYC. Unfortunately there were about 11 of us, so I only got about a glass worth, but boy did I savor that wine.

Gary….great shows. I wanted you to know that I am watching from Hong Kong. Your show is the first thing I do in the morning (your evening – 12 hours difference in time) when I arrive at my office.

Best Cab based wine was a 1961 Chateau Gruard Larose.

I have only been a wine drinker for a few years, and the first vintage I was exposed to was 97. My first wine love was the 97 Estancia I went through cases of that stuff, and when it seemed every store was out of it I happened to be traveling to Canada out of EWR and went to the duty free shop and what did I find? the 97 Estancia. Now that I know more and my tastes have matured. My last favorite was the 01 Quintessa. Man, do I miss that 97 vintage thought, for my taste buds no vintage has touched it. Love the show!

  26. August 3, 2006

    Kevin C

Nice tour of the place, Gary.

To those that haven’t been to the actual Wine Library store, it is 10 times more interesting and cooler than what you saw on video. Definitely check it out if you’re ever in the NYC area (only 30 minutes away by car – as long as you can get out of Holland Tunnel ;P)

I also have to agree with Rich S on LI wines. The reds are pretty bad to just plain aweful. I remember the Pugliese Cab Franc being drinkable, but the cab sauvignons generally taste like those $3 Trader Joe cabs. And don’t even think about buying pinots from LI. I think the LI wine I enjoyed the most was a sparkling red from one of the vineyards out there – the name escapes me – but it was very close to a lambrusco. Nothing inspiring, but very nice and refreshing wine.

My favorite cab has to be this reserve cab I tried at this small vineyard called Moon Mountain in Mount Veeder, Sonoma, at a 2000 ft elevation. I can’t remember the vintage, but it was just perfect. Perhaps it was the perfect weather, the beautiful backdrop and the cave the nice lady took us into to show us the hundreds of barrels and let us taste straight from the barrel, but that just blew me away.

  27. August 3, 2006

    Dave Miller

Actually, I think it was the 99 Quintessa.

    Gary,
Best “group” of cabs I’ve had was a trip in Napa 7 years ago. I was in the Tokalon tasting room at Mondavi enjoying a vertical of reserves 91-94. Michael Mondavi walked in and we had 20 min. of great conversation and I had an afternoon of great wine. I am just sorry that the quality will never be the same.

Great episode, I live in NY near the finger lakes region and I am not a fan of NY reds but we have some great whites such as Dr. Frank Semi-Dry Riesling, I have had a lot of great MY riesling and a great dessert wine Fiori Delle Stelle VIDAL ICE WINE-2004, made by casa larga if you want to taste the best of hte finger lakes region those two are a great place to start.

I know seeing how you just did a NY episode you probally wont be doing another one for awhile but when you do NY riesling and ice wine would be sweet.

Recived my first order today and the first bottle I had was not cooked, I look forward to buying more as soon as I have room on my rack to store them

    Gary,

Watching this episode was the first time that I wished I didn’t live in California. Oh my God, WL is huge!! For me, it’d be like a trip to Disneyland to see all those wines. Quite the selection of Carlo Rossi wines, too! It was only a couple of days ago that I was searching through the WL site for more info on the store, so your tour was timely and spot on. Thanks. Too bad, I’ll probably never make it out there to see it in person. :-(

Favorite cab? Jeez, you’d think I’d actually have an answer for this one… OK, I looked through my tasting notes that I keep at corkd.com, and the only cab-based wine I have given five stars is the Windwalker 2002 Lady in Red. Windwalker is a tiny family winery in the Fairplay area of the Sierra Foothills. Not a well known wine area, even in California. But it’s definitely on the rise. Most wines in that region rate crappy to OK. This one was truly stunning. One of my 3-4 favorite wines ever.

Keep it up Gary! And thanks again for the tour.

I’ve been drinking wine for forty years and although I have a good memory, it’s short. The best cabernet based wine I drank in the last few years was the 97 Ferrari-Carano Tresor. (I think).

Answer to question of best CS based wine I ever had: In 1972 (if memory serves me) at the 2nd Heublein wine auction tasting at Lincoln Center in NYC – a 1906 Chateau Margaux carefully opened by Michael Broadbent (I went back several times and probably had about 6ounces). At that time you could taste – FOR FREE – many great wines. And I did – on my lunch hour++++ A subway ride back to the office enabled me to overindulge safely.

I like cabernets a lot but I don’t love them.
In my house we drink at list 3 bottle of wine per week !
The best cabernet sauvignons I had in my life was : Tenuta la palazza Magnificat 1997 ! I think that in Italy, not only Tuscany makes really great Cabs !
Emilia Romagna it’s a region right above tuscany and what a place.

    Keep up the great job!

there is something almost meditation-esq about reading every comment….i mean, when you are the 30-somethingth poster (is that a word?). i enjoyed the tour…that is a big store! well, once again i am going to have to come with a fairly recent everyman kind of label for my question of the day…i don’t have any latour or lafite stories…no big names….the favorite cab-based i have had was…well, you know, once again i can’t say ‘best’. let me just say that Liparita Napa Valley Cab was very good…that was one that i drank recently…of course you guys are out of it.
does anyone else have the problem of annoying co-workers coming in during your WLTV time and asking annoying questions…really bothers me

  39. August 4, 2006

    Sam Zen

Garry, too many great cabs out there… but definitely it is Bordeaux, miles ahead of Cali., all the way.

Suggestion… you need some sort of a sign off, a trade mark good buy, one last VaynerNod if you will.

    Hi Gary,

Thanks for clarifying why you give price ranges instead of exact price you sell the wines for in your store……

Best Cab I have had personally is probably a toss up between 1989 Chateau Gruaud Laros St. Julien Grand Cru and 1997 Joseph Phelps Insignia

Thanks for the tour, the store is very impressive and was good idea to give us out of staters an idea of your operation.

  41. August 4, 2006

Best ever…so far…1995 Silver Oak – Alexander Valley.

Best with value in mind, my current, under $20, is the 2003 Waterstone Cabernet Sauvignon. If you haven’t tried it yet it will probably pleasantly surprise you. Especially at this price level.

  42. August 4, 2006

Liked the tour of WL. Had never been in the 2nd floor back section past the fish.

Best “value priced” cab I ever had – 1994 Chateeau St. Jean Cinq Cepages. Bought a case before all the hype of the 1996 or was it 1997 vintage. I have 2 bottles left. Should I drink now or keep holding?

  43. August 4, 2006

    Gary,
Being a Long Islander, we do the winery tour/tasting thing and I enjoyed the New York episode. Good calls on the Bedell and Palmer, I’ve tasted both and couldn’t agree more. Long Island has lots of good dessert wines but it’s hard to find a good red on Long Island … Pindar Mythology is about as good as it gets.

My favorite Cab… With out going nuts on price, I’d have to say a 2002 Bleasdale Mulberry Tree Cab is a screaming buy for under $15.

It was great getting the high speed tour of Wine Library! Keep up the episodes, I love ‘em!

  44. August 4, 2006

    Bluebenz

Best Cab – 1983 Diamond Creek – Volcanic – Drank in winter of 2004. The fruit was still amazing!!!

#2 – 1992 – Opus – Actually drank at the Rutherford Grill next to BV.. Irony – I think so…

    Gary,
Thanks for the behind the scenes looksey. I appreciated the ever-so-quick bottle pull from what looked like the Rhone aisle. The Benny Hill theme accompaniment gets a nod and a wink. Best old world-based Cab I ever had was an 82 Latour. Sublime beyond words. Best new world-based Cab was the ‘91 Dominus. Thankfully I still have a couple bottles stashed.
    Cheers, CK

Good tour as I have often wondered about the size of the Wine Library operation. Impressive.

I look forward to your daily episodes, almost as much as tuning in David Letterman for his monolog, antice and such. Your show is not Letterman status but you do look a lot like Jay Leno!

Cabernet based? Too wide of a range for me to remember. As for cabernet, I recently attended a wine dinner featuring only Cabernet with each course. All were Premier Napa Valley. Wow I loved them all. Wine is much like a beautiful woman, its hard to pick a favorite. So as you experience beautiful wines there is a moment in time it is the best you ever had.

  51. August 4, 2006

    Ed R

    Gary,
I could not have been more pleased with your reaction to the Bedell merlot. Well I guess a “It sucks” would have provided an even greater chuckle, but to that gray haired old snob at the winery, ha ha ha . Justed started the whole wine thing so I would like to know what $25 and what $50 cab would provide the most bang for my buck. Not yet become comfortable with dropping a $100.
    Thanks,
    The vindicated wine novice

Just saw yesterday’s WLTV now. Great show…. as for the best Cab, I have to thank you. Was out at The Ryland Inn about 6 months ago for a group 40th birthday with my wife and two friends and their wives. Both friends are further along in their wine education than I.

During the early parts of the meal my friends had selected a white and then a burgundy (neither of which I specifically recall). As the time came for our beef course we decided to go with a Cali Cab, and it was my turn to choose. Browsed the list looking for something that would be good but wouldn’t completely break the bank and when I came upon the 2002 Egelhoff Cab. I thought it to be pretty reasonalble on a restaurant list at $110.

I had purchased a case from WL based on your extremely strong recomendation last year but hadn’t yet tried. It was absolutely stunning. We all loved it, and I was very pleased to come up with something that they had never heard of and are now trying to acquire. Can’t wait to get into my stash over the next years. Many thanks!

  53. August 4, 2006

Best cabs – I have to go with the ‘61 Lafite Rothschild. But for California, the ‘84 Mondavi Reserve was marvelous. I’d have loved to try it alongside the ‘84 Heitz Martha’s.

I agree that Virginia, Texas, Idaho may have a shot of hitting the high end of things. But NJ??? It’s a LONG way off.

    Keep ‘em coming.

the tour was great, reminded me of some Benny Hill episodes. maybe you could dress up for us? In NYS I like Dr. K’s Salmon Run chard. For California cab, I remember a bottle of 1986 Chateau Montelena Estate that was great a couple of years ago. For Bordeaux, Lynch Bages 1989

I love Cabernet Sauvignon (and Cab-based) wine. While I have enjoyed several outstanding ones from all over the world, the one that stands out in my mind was the 1997 La Sirena from California. My wife and I drank it in 1995 (6 years in bottle) and it showed lush black currant fruit, lightly toasted oak, sweet spice and minerality and ripe tannins. A well balanced wine!

    gary,
how do you have a ny episode without finger lakes rieslings? I know you have some Dr. Frank’s rieslings in stock, and you used to have a wiemer riesling in stock. Hopefully you are just waiting until you have a better selection of finger lakes wines before you feature them in an episode?
also, I hope you include a dominus in your cab tasting because it seems like a high-end wine that the critics (rp and laube of spectator) have been dramatically split on for recent vintages.
    -thanks

Gary, another awesome episode. I have watched from the 1st (Verite) and you are now Humming with the show. I haved been going to WL since 1999, and it was interesting to reflect back on how small WL was then while watching you run through the place now. I have all my family and friends visiting WLTV now.

My best Cab experience was the 1978 Chateau Montelena Estate consumed in 2000. The longest strongest finish I have ever experienced. It was still youthful. Montelena must of loaded that wine with Stems and seeds back then for it to have so mcuh life after 22 years.

thanks for all you do for us.

I’m a little late with this but…..Wow, some interesting LI bashing on this board. There are over 30 wineries on the east end of LI and sure, some are not so hot, but do yourself a favor and try a few others. Shinn is making great reds. Jamesport makes some great reds, whites and blends. And Channing Daughters and Wolffer, both on the South Fork, are 2 of the best wineries out there. Also try Lieb (whites), Macari and Roanoke. If you just go to the Pindar’s and Bedell’s you’ll be missing out.

Best Cab based ever would have to be the one that hooked me. 1959 Chateau Lafite Rothschild “Double Magnum” I was fortunate enough have this one at a family reunion about 12 years ago.

The best i have found in my price range however is the 1992 FERRARI-CARANO “TRESOR RESERVE”
I also really enjoyed the 1998 Leeuwin Estate “Art Series” Cabernet, but can’t seem to find them anymore. Gary thanks for everything and keep up the good work. Jtk

The most surprisingly awesome Cab I had was Cyrus 1998 Alexander Valley. It was in the cellar till summer of ‘06 and we tasted it with Justin Isosceles 1997 (95ws) and it kicked the Isosceles all over the place. Maybe it had something to do with the Cyrus being unfiltered but what a gem it was. I may have opened the wine at its very peak. Never had an experience quite like that with a bottl I payed $25 for. Keep-it-up Vay-ner-chuk!
Looking forward to see when they announce the date of the Steelers-Jets game.

Ahhhh…so now we see where the black bucket came from. It’s fun to see the “old” gary. Oh, and (QOTD) the “BEST” cabernet I’ve ever had…..2001 Teachworth.

Hmm, Gary doesn’t say it, but Hopewell Valley is actually a New Jersey winery. I don’t think all of their products are made from their own vineyard’s grapes, though (maybe why Gary counted it with New York wines?). I haven’t had much of their wines (despite being only a few miles from where I live!), but their white port is an excellent dessert wine.
