First of all, who cares when you post. I strive to never be the first post nerd.

Secondly: Gary, you said the “Six viewers of WLTV out there…”, dude, c’mon, you know there’s more. Give yourself some credit. I don’t post everyday, so that’s a sign.

The vintage thing is perfect, cause (and I don’t need to explain to all you wine folks watching this) it makes a difference. But it’s always nice to see you compare 2 different vintages of the same wine. It’s almost as fun as blind tasting.

So, first off, your show in my scale of 1-3 gets a good old fashioned 8. Way to do two wines from the same vintage…even if it’s a Spanish Grenache. I’ll try and check those out (I’ll buy them from you if I can’t find them locally…and I have a huge amount of wine right behind me at work!!)

And for your question of the day about the sign off, it should just simply be: “This is Gary Vanyerchuck, I’m gonna kick your ass with throwing in your face the REAL facts about wine!!”

I’ll understand if you don’t use that. And by the way…The Bears are still gonna romp on your Jets. And the Giants for that matter.

    See you later,
    Tony

Can I go ahead and metion that I’m the first to leave a REAL comment instead of those nerds that are so concerned with being “first”.

People, c’mon….watch the show…no one really cares if your first or not…not even Gary.

Relax….watch the show…so what about what time you say “I’M FIRST!!!!”…what are you, like 10 years old or something?

    Go Bears.

Can’t believe I was first to post! Happened totally by accident, and only becuase your vlog was posted much later than usual today.

Episode was very good — I had been hoping for “vertical tastings”. I love Grenache, and wasn’t aware Spain had Grenache. I will keep an eye out for it.

QOD – ending Tag Line. I like the “drunk” line. Anything I would come up with would be hopelessly corny — but I am looking forward to what some of the imaginative people on this board come up.

Hi and thank you for the little vertical tasting. I think (as you know) that this is both a fun thing to do and a great stimulous for us to do the same thing. I agree completely about buying a bottle before buying a case and learned the hard way… well I brought 11 bottles back (sorry, and thank you for being so accomodating).

    Your signature – how about:

“THis is Gary V, bringing forward the boundaries of good tastes”

    or

“… and remember, it’s only good wine if you like it when you put it in your mouth”

    great job as usual

Tony, only reason a “real comment” from me wasn’t earlier was because my internet connection slowed down to a crawl, so I couldn’t catch the last couple minutes of today’s episode until almost an hour later. Not nice to call someone you don’t know a “nerd” just because you didn’t happen on the website just in time seeing no comments posted. I figured it was worth a shot to throw in two words. And by the way, the words were not “first”.

perfect, now i am justified in my dark chocolate indulgences: gary told me to!
the sign of a true artist is about what you said, one who is never totally pleased with the final project once it’s put to bed. it keeps the juices and ideas flowing. that was definitely a 94-95 point episode.
and last, i think you almost had it right with the first tag….how about “stomping the grapes so you don’t have to” a little more metaphorical, but still alluding to the sometimes bad wines that may need stomping as well as alluding to the learning stuff we crave.

Gary great episode today, very important topic. I’m glad that your constantly pushing yourself, but give yourself some credit for what your doing. WLTV wouldn’t have such a cult following (and growing) if you weren’t entertaining and educating us in this crazy world of wine. Hey how about that as a tag line, “Until next time this is Gary Vaynerchuk entertaining and educating you in this crazy world of wine”. My wife suggest a more “Seacrest-esq” line like “Vaynerchuk . . .out!” or maybe more like “Vaynerchuk uncorked”.

Anyway keep up the great work.

    Gary – fun episode.

For a closing I think something that is a combo of a toast and blessing would be smooth and timeless. Lifting the glass . . .

“This is Gary Vaynerchuk – Fine wines. Fabulous friends. Long life.”

I’d also consider dropping saying your name at the beginning if you are going to emphasize it at the end. It is printed on the screen so there isn’t much mystery about who you are. “Hello and welcome to another (superlative of the day) episode of Wine Library TV”

    Keep up the great work!

    Gary,

Great episode, as usual. How about:

“This is Gary Vaynerchuk, uncorking the truth about wine”.

Or if you’re looking for something a little more “Jets pregame”:

“This is Gary Vaynerchuk, uncorking a bottle of whoopass on the world of wine”.

    Or maybe “Jets postgame”:

“This is Gary Vaynerchuk, and I’m hammered right now”.

    Your choice.

    Gary,
I watched a few episodes with my five years old son. He calls you a “wine guy”.
    So here is my suggestion:
You can end the show with something stupid but catchy like this: “and now goodbye from the wine guy!”

Btw, you never answer my email about the Riesling!

    Gary -

Can you please spend a little time discussing why some vintages of wine age better than other vintages?

As for you sign off slogan, here a few choices:

Drinking our way around the world one glass at a time (right from New Jersey).

Because great wine deserves shameless promotion.

If you didn’t buy it at Wine Library. you probably got it somewhere else.

Like Snakes on a Plane, it will make you wish that you drank more. Wine Library TV.

Getting folks laid one glass at a time. Wine Library TV.

Reminding you to lay down and keep cool. Wine Library TV.

Ok Gary, I’m in the slogan game…how about this?? ” This is Gary V, and remember, the more wine you drink, the better I look”

And remember if your a wine snob or a cork dork if you don’t try it (or buy it) you can’t taste it.

  30. August 23, 2006

    Bill Ipp

    Gary,

I smiled while watching your reaction to the 2002 and recalling your comments earlier about “‘97 heralded as the greatest vintage … ‘98, nobody wanted it”. I loved many Napa Cabs from 1998 (Clark Claudon, Lewelling, Dalla Valle, Viader, Montelena). Sometimes these “off” vintages offer you the opportunity to drink quality Estates much younger. As an example, the ‘98 Lewelling drank well upon release and still drinkings well today. It may not have the structure as ‘97 or ‘01, but is still good.

My point … critics talk about vintages in terms of good and bad. I do not always agree. Three are certainly “off” vintages. But with the better wineries, it is more a matter of a difference in style and approachability … not necessarily good vs. bad.

    Do you agree?

  31. August 23, 2006

    Bill Nelson

Interesting Gary, I’ve also found great variations in vintages but never have been able to taste 2 at once. How about “it’s time to put a cork in another episode of wltv”.

  32. August 23, 2006

    Ed R

“tackling one bottle at a time”
“spitting, so you don’t have to swallow”
    “J E T S, JETS JETS JETS!”
“I’m Gary Vaynerchuck the other wine geek”
In all honesty I think you should stay true to form or go with the “Drinking bad wine so you don’t have to.”
    Keep the good work,
    ED
P.S. Could you do an episode on Northern Rhone or Loire Valley ?

    Tony

Gary, good episode. I give it a 90. Lacked a little depth. Would have been nice to do a vertical covering more years. That would be totally fascinating to me to see you taste and talk about 3 or 4 years of the same wine.

Honestly, Gary, I like your intro and sign off exactly the way they are. I don’t think you need some gimmicky sign off. Most of the ones I’ve read (no offense guys) are either just bad or corny or both. I think what you’ve got is natural and works. Please avoid a gimmicky or corny sign off.

Thanks for the update on the heat episode!! I just KNEW you were working as hard as you possibly could on that. Boy, I just know it’s gonna be the best episode yet!!! Wow, I’m so excited I think I’m gonna pass out!!!!!!

BTW, I agree that Ep #64 rocked. As you know I was floored by the size of WL. Something to be proud of. One thing you never did answer was how come there aren’t Wine Libraries sprinkled all over the US? Have you ever thought about making it a chain? If not, why not?

Also, I hate it when you taste a wine that’s sold out! Particularly if you make me want to taste it. You are a horrible, horrible tease.

  38. August 24, 2006

    Cameron

Nice vertical tasting. I agree with Tony that it would have been cool to see more vintages taste, but the episode still gives a good feeling for how diverse wine is from vintage to vintage.

While I think that your current sign-off is totally fine, here’s a couple:

“Wine Library TV- From the Vine to the Vlog”

    “Gary Vaynerchuck- Winespeak Decanted”

    Lynne

    Gary,
Watched episode #1 again…quite a difference between then and now. (for the better) Its better not to take ourselves so seriously.

The very day you did the ‘04 Falesco review, a case with six bottles of the stuff arrived. I am a wine novice and even I thought it was nasty! Which brings me to my question: How big a roll do politics play in this wine game? Why would a professional make such an obvious mistake in judgement? Or was it just a bad day on the job? (Referring to the WS 90 score)

Closing remarks: Use no specific one; we’ll all be waiting to see what you say next, oh wine guru!

    * Gary V…….uncorked and seated

    * Remember…try this at home

    * Gary V…just doin’ my job. (I’m so jealous)

BTW, I guess I’m one of the six ’cause I’ve watched WLTV from the get-go.

I just got back from Napa. I wanted to thank everyone for all the great tips. One of the best tips was to share the tastings with my wife. We were able to taste a lot more wines in lower quantities that way. We went to the following places: Bouchaine, Domaine Carneros, Etude, Hall, Whitehall Lane, Provinence, V Satturi, Ridge, Harvest Moon, Domaine Chandon. I’d be glad to give my impressions on any of these — just let me know.

Major props go to Gary for hooking me up with a personal tour at Ridge where my wife and I were comped our tasting fee and presented with a bottle of Lytton Springs Zin as an anniversary gift. I can’t say enough good things about the trip to Ridge.

Finally, the funniest observation I made was that at 11AM people were very formal and stuffy. By 4PM couples begin groping each other. By 5PM couples are making out all over the place. It’s pretty funny to see it…

  52. August 24, 2006

    TimF

One other thing to point out from my trip to Napa: Winelibrary’s prices are better than just about every winery’s tasting room. I’d only buy bottles that aren’t widely distributed. I went to Etude and Gary’s price on the 2004 Pinot is $10 less than it was in the tasting room…

    How about:
Signing off here at Wine Library TV…
…where a sip of mine saves you time.
…let our waste save your taste.
    …always fresh, rarely re-canted.
    …pop a cork, twist a top, share a sip, don’t spill a drop.

I like Lynne’s “Remember…Try this at home.” Maybe revised a little “Remember, I’m a professional and you SHOULD try this at home.”

    Question lead up:
When I was on a trip to OR and WA I visited a bunch of wineries and got to taste a bunch of pinot’s, reislings, zins, and syrahs. While tasting my friend was laughing at me, I was lining up glasses of wine infront of me and going back to them in order to see how air was affecting them. He thought I should be ‘drinking’ faster. I pointed out that if his glass was empty he couldn’t be enjoying the wine as much as I was.
    Question:
Was I tricking myself into thinking I was getting anything new from the wines?

  55. August 24, 2006

    Craig K

    Gary,
Excellent episode (90). Just as you mentioned yesterday where reviewing 90-point wines is an occasional recurring theme on WLTV, you might consider the same for comparing 2-4 vintages for same producer same varietal — always fun and educational. Question for you: Can you talk about, or devote an episode to, how to estimate a wine’s peak (e.g., “drink now vs. 3 years from now”), as well as what characteristics lead to estimating longevity? As for QOD, my preference is that your SIG contain three elements: 1) Station reminder and/or callback. This also presents an opportunity to add a teaser for next episode if desired. 2) Your name. Although you have a growing fan-base, there are still many more to come and repeating your name at the end helps bring each episode full circle. Plus, the verve with which you say your name is practically its own trademark. :-) These first two make sense and have worked well, unless you have significant comments/emails to the contrary. 3) A catchy tagline, preferably something that challenges the viewers to learn and enjoy wine for themselves, which is one of the main reasons for this whole thing, yes? So altogether, it would be something like: “I’m Gary Vaynerchuk and this is WLTV. Check me on the next, where I’ll be tasting 4 premium red wine blends to see if they live up to their sticker shock. Until then, what wine is pleasing your palate?”

Gary, another great installment. Thanks for taking my question. I cook a lot, an my wife’s a chef, so I’m pretty familiar with a lot of spices, but several you refer to I don’t know about. I will be sure to incorporate those flavors into some food so I can appreciate the nuances even more.

Even in my infant knowledge of wines, I’ve come to appreciate the difference in vintage. I used to read Wine Spectator religiously and I always took note of the ratings they would put in tear-out cards based on vintage. It was helpful to explore the differences between on one year and the next. Being around agriculture a little growing up, and some part of my professional career, I think it’s important, as you said, for people not to lose site of the fact that wine is an agricultural product. Too much water, too little water, too hot, too cold. Everything in the environment affects the outcome of an agricultural product.

I will be sure to take a look at episode 64. I’m in DC, but I would love to recommend my friends in NYC and Jersey to come by your shop.

I think the closing of the show is fine the way it is. You don’t strike me as a gimmick guy.

By the way…what’s up with the posting date on the comments page? It’s a day off.

Sign offs no matter how clever, usually backfire and come of as cartoonish. “See ya next time”, although it may seem too easy is to the point and retains some class. If you have to go with a sign off, then I agree with the suggestion to just use all of them this way your tongue is always in your cheek, and you can get as silly as you want, without the risk of sounding like a repetitious caricature. For example when you get around to doing a show on the pink stuff you can end with something like: “I’m Gary Vaynerchuk looking at the world of wine through rosé colored glasses”.

Or you can re-use some classics like:

“Winelibrary.com..Because an educated consumer is our best customer”.

    “Wine.. It’s what’s for dinner”.

“Winelibrary TV.. We will drink no wine before it’s time”.

But if you feel the need to try something clever, here’s one for you..

Winelibrary TV: bringing value to wine one bottle at a time.

    Sorry, I couldn’t resist.

Can’t come up with anything better than I have already read in the previous posts for a sign off.

Want to thank Gary for helping me get a wine that was temporarily out of stock.

In light of this vintage episode how about looking for wine bargains with good wines from less than good vintages. I picked up some Bordeaux and Burgundy bargains from off vintages over the years. Always looking for more.

    Gary,

How about one of these signatures:

“W.I.N.E. Wine, wine, wine!” (like the Jets cheer)

“Wine library and you, perfect together”

Great episode. Got a question about smelling the nose of the wine. It seems that everytime I stick my nose in my glass and take a whiff it just smells like alcohol? What gives?

    Closing phrase:

“See you next time as the wine swirls”

    Question:

I want to ask you about glass. No, not the glass that Chad Pennington is made of. Glass bottles. I was under the impression that wine bottles are tinted ( brown, green, etc. ) to protect the wine from damage from light. If this is true, then why is an EXPENSIVE Sauternes like Chateau d’Yquem in a CLEAR bottle? What are your thoughts?

    Go Giants!!!

Rinse or use other glasses as you taste different wines, please. As minute as it is, there remains residue in the glass. Wine tasters are some of the most annal retentive people about. How can you taste the PALMER chardonnay or any other for that matter and than taste a port or merlot using the same glass? You are always looking for the nuances in the wine.

Question can you do an episode on 4 or 5 $15.00 to 20.00 widely available Chards or Cabs. Love the show

While I agree with you that there certainly are differences in a wine from vintage to vintage, I think it is an exaggeration to say that all vintages are dramatically different from each other. Sometimes the differences are subtle. In fact, many vintages produce wines that show the same characteristics as wines from earlier vintages. If you read RP (which I’m sure you do) you will see his reference to a prior vintage in a current wine tasting.

    Regarding your sign-off, How’s this…

“This is Gary Vaynerchuk. Until next time…Dosvidanja.”

    Hey Gary et al.,
I’m still trying to come up with a sign off phrase.

However I have a question: I am pretty new to wine and alcohol in general. I hate to taste the alcohol. I mean, i hate the heat in the finish of some wines and spirits. Is this something that I will get over or do I just have to put up with it as a necessary evil to wine’s being alcoholic? For instance i tried the Hecula you recommended and got some heat on the finish. Is this just a feature of the wine that the mourvedre grape produces, like garnacha produces wines with higher alcohol? Is this something I will get used to? I tend to think that wines with a warm finish are not balanced; am I wrong? Should I just stick to wines with less than 13% alcohol? Please respond.

If you’re still accepting viewer suggestions of wines from your inventory that we’d like you to taste, I would like to request you to taste the Nino Negri Sfursat 5 Stelle 2002.

I agree with George H. P. (post #64)…. Use a diff. glass with each wines. Other than that, love the show. I’m working on a tag line.

“Wait, you said crossing the streams was bad, Igon.”

Gary, in episode #47 you said that vintage wasn’t that big of a deal (20 day forecasts, ‘97 Burgundy, etc.). Now you’re saying it’s the single biggest aspect regarding the quality of wine. Am I the only one who caught this?!?! I mean, c’mon, you’re even wearing the same shirt.

Gary, I’m catching up after returningand I had to comment here. I a gree completely but I feel as though you;re kind’a going against your comments from one of your earlier episodes where you said that buying off vointage could be a steal. Your’re right, it can be, but as I commented on that episode, whoi has the ability to pick thourhg a bad viontage to find the dianomd in the rough. I agree with this episode for us casual drinkers. Best to be safe with a solid vintage.

While on vacation I discovered a lovely family of wines that you need to sample. Guzman Aldazabal- I tried the Exaltacion and was BLOWN AWAY! Also, their crianza was very nice and modestly priced. Check’em out.

First off, Wine Library TV is excellent! Count me in as your seventh viewer :-)

I just wanted to mention that this episode was great, mostly because it proves that the vintage of the wine can far outshadow the age. Among the wine lovers I know, most will reach for an older wine before a newer one, regardless of how the vintage fared. This backs up my argument that older is not always better!

This was a FANTASTIC episode, on of the few I’ve missed and caught up on.

This episode is a great argument as to why you shouldn’t fall in love with ONE wine.

    I know I’m late…howabout this:

WLTV…Where the scores of knowledge are more important than the scores of wine!
    Or something like that.

I love seeing how the signature sign off line was developed….that is cool.
I actually find that off-vintages are such huge bargains that I buy them frequently, especially from prioven terroirs in Bordeaux. IT’s great as they drink earlier which lets me save my 2000s, 1990s etc for special occasions. Great episode!

im up in south lake tahoe right now but i am going to go to the store and see if i can get 2 of the same but different vintages. thanks for the idea.
QOTD: its to late to make up a closer. but i would say “making wine exciting for the younger generation. screw you snobs” (and push up on nose)

Great episode again Gary, I don’t think the importance of understanding the differences in vintages can be overstated. Just like when you reviewed the 98 Cask 23 and panned it, I had only had the 97 Cask 23 and it was fantastic. Would love to see more vintage oriented episodes. Also think its great that you are being as interactive as you are with your audience. With that being said, would love to see you do a tasting episode on the different charbono’s out there, and an episode on vin jaune’s would be great.
