    Gary,
As much as I am going to hate the wait till next Wednesday for episode 100, I think it will be totally worth it. Let the anticipation build and allow time for people to tell their friends so they can come watch. I can’t wait.

I liked todays show a lot. To be honest I missed the last 3 or 4 episodes, so today I am catching up. I am a WLTV addict, but sometimes life happens.
    Cheers!

GV, don’t worry about the doubters. To be honest I don’t always agree with your taste and I think your scoring is influenced by your mood. It’s fun to say what was Gary thinking or boy was he on with that mango reference. That’s the beauty of this medium and your performances – the entertainment of your experiences tasting wine and the passion with which you convey it.

Because of your show I stopped by your store, because of the attention to detail in presentation, great prices and knowledgeable service of the shop staff I’ll be in again to pickup a mixed case (including my Droin and funnel).

    Remember, you can’t tarnish integrity.

A little buildup for episode 100… I like it (as long as #101 comes the next day so we get our fix! :-) !

Seriously, great job on the first #99 episodes. Let me throw this out as commentary to your spirited opening in this episode. WLTV is better than weeknight TV (but not as good as DA BEARS), it has no commercials, it is extremely entertaining and informative. GV’s honesty and enthusiasm for wine (and, really, life) shines through on every episode. The show has evolved tremendously over the first 99 episodes and like a good democracy continues to evolve (insert political joke here) with continued creativity by its producers and constructive feedback from its followers. What else can a viewer ask for? I fear the day that for some reason WLTV stops. WLTV forever!

QOD for the bloggers – What is your favorite WLTV episode of the first #99? This question will allow everyone to go back and view some oldies-but-goodies as we wait for #100. Also a good way to get familiar with Chris S’s spreadsheet (Chris and GV, I love that there is a direct link within the sheet to each episode, that was sorely needed as an alternative to paging through webpages to find oldies)

Quick suggestion – Make the labels as big as possible for the 5 secs they are on the screen, as long as they don’t get in the way of GV’s mug

I have to get my video cam and my Joe Walton costume ready! E-mail me if you want to hear my Joe Walton story, Gary.

And great episode with a good, cogent, and earnest statement of purpose at the beginning. You know from the comments that there is a whole crew out there that has your back. Chris Stan put the smackdown on a guy a couple of ep’s ago and he backed off the attack talk. Now we all just get along…..
    Looking forward to #100!

To answer my own question, my favorite episode is #69… if you haven’t seen it you’re really missing out :-)

  20. September 27, 2006

    Brandon M

    I’m sold…Not that I really needed to be….I’m sorry I ever questioned you. ;-)
Glad to see your zooming and posting the labels up there.

Where’s the Green Screen? I’m waitng for the floating head, no body episode of WLTV.

Forest Glen? Cmon…I’ve never had an even OK bottle of it.

Gary…I knew it!!!! I have not had a good Silver Oak in the 2000’s, and believe me I’ve had plenty!
Still have plenty of 90’s in the cellar though!

I’M GETTING THE SHAKES…MUST…..HAVE….WLTV. sheesh what the heck am I gonna do for 7 days.
I guess I’ll go get Kastner’s RSS feed done :-)

Gary, As you know from my multiple comments defending you on Ep 96, I understand exactly what your philosophy is. I am ecstatic that you chose to address the issue and put it to bed….which you clearly did. Enjoy the weekend and Holiday. Good Luck w/ #100!!!

GV great as always, nice candid respose…but anywho…

No WLTV for a few days, I guess its back to internet porn and people setting them selves on fire

Russ J – Comment 18 – I did not know who Joe Walton was maybe he is before my time, I am only 26…so I looked it up

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Walton

My fav. episode also was #69, I laughed my ass off at that, my personal opinion is that if someone took some sort of offense to that they need to lighten up, its WLTV, not CNN.

GV – could always get a WLTV employee to be your back-up and fill in while your gone, we will understand if he is not as awesome as you, every great QB needs a quality back up

  23. September 27, 2006

GOL…favorite epsiode is either #18 because it is when I started watching and was kooked immediately or Edpisode #64 because I love seeing different cellars and how they are built, and that wine room is amazing!

big ups GV! The haters who question your integrity and motives haven’t been watching. Go back and see GV “pass” on some of his top selling wines. I’d say if anything that WLTV may have even hurt his sales as much as it has helped.

I mean check out the Robert Mondavi Jr. interview, he comes right out of the gate with the first bottle saying that the vintage was awkward, the bottle was tight and it’s not a screaming value. Classic!

I wouldn’t worry, he keeps it real.

I think I somehow inadvertently started the hoopla by asking if folks were buying/trying more as a result of watching…but this is what’s great about this medium. It’s a 2-way street, and a community, so we can “talk amongst ourselves”. Anyway, the answer seems to be yes, we’re buying & trying more, and we have Gary to thank for that! Plus, “Smokey Garbage”, ‘Skittles on Steroids”… where else would we get such great band name suggestions?

Gary, You don’t need to explain yourself to those doubters out there! WE all know you’re being honest about your tastes on the wine, like a real wine lover does. Those people are probably 49ers fans…or fair-weather Rams/Colts fans.

Anyway, keep being honest, and keep letting those snooty high priced wineries know where they stand, good or bad. And most importantly, GO BEARS!!!

    See you next week,

I LOVE WLTV!! I feel like “Skittles on ‘roids”! And Gary, you can come on “OUR BOARD” any time you want.(#28) Whatever revenue you may have lost by being honest, you will make up for by being honest. Does that make sense?
Thank you for saving me $$. I don’t have to try Silver Oak now, tho’ I thought about it; until this episode.
I don’t know what we’re all going to do until Wednesday. I know I’ll be celebrating Buckeyes and Bengals wins again this weekend.I guess I can celebrate for two or three days more.
    Looking forward to 100.

WLTV is a fun diversion for me…Thanks, Gary. Sorry to have 2 minutes of this episode directed towards what did not need to be said. Anyway, the show is alot of fun and the WL is a great wine store with a fabulous staff.

I have had much fun in trying many of your suggestions and trying to broaden my palate. At times, we agree on wines, and then at other times we don’t…but isn’t that part of the mystery of wine…

Keep up the good work, have a great holiday, and looking forward to #100.

    Gary,
Your credibility is substantial when I compare your approach to another second generation young turk across the river who promotes the WS and its droppings for fun and profit. Must be a lot of fools in the market.

Gary, I’m glad you set the record straight about your philosphy and objective for doing WLTV. I have aksed questions about the business side of things, but have NEVER thought you to be a schill for the industry. In fact, I’ve always wondered about the impact your reviews have had with your distributors. You frequently say “Man, I’m going to get in trouble for that” when you diss a wine. Hands down…you have my support, and developing quite a following here in DC.

Sam Zen…I, too, am in DC. Give me a shout and maybe we can check out some good grape. matthew@halllyons.com

LOL…High quality and Applebees in the same sentence.

I had never of the Silver Oak, but noticed it got the Vayner-Clank.

Too bad we have to wait until next Wednesday, but the time will help build the anticipation. Gary, if you’re hanging out in DC and have some extra time, give me a shout and I will gladly treat you. Maybe along with Sam Zen.

    I agree about the wine…KISS!

    PeteB

    Hello all!

I don’t think it is fair to accuse Gary or WLTV on rating wines in order to promote sales, because as we all know wine is totally subjective for the most part – what tastes good to one may not taste good to another. If a wine is recommended on WLTV, you may go out and buy it – but if you don’t like it are you going to buy it again? Well I would hope not. If you like it, then what have you lost? You found a new wine that you like. Regardless WL is going to sell wine.

Consumers who don’t trust their own palate and need to blindly follow another (ie. Parker, Tanzer, WS, GV etc.)are the one’s that grossly perpetuate sales of a certain wine. Be an educated consumer and experiment for yourself – trust your own palate.

I don’t know, I am just a simple guy who has been into wine for a few years, because simply “I like it” – heck when Gary is explaining the nose and flavor profiles of wines – half the time I am like what is he talking about? – I don’t smell or taste that – it smells & tastes like wine!

What I do like about WLTV is that it makes wine fun. Everyone is friendly and best of all we are all able to share our opinions on wine, sports, life etc.

So feel free to agree or disagree with Gary it is what makes the board great! Attacking someones opinion or credibility is not what the board is about, so if you are going to do please go elsewhere! Thanks!

P.S. – sorry for rambling, but in the spirit of how I see the board. Gary I’ve had the 2002 Silver Oak and liked it, so we will disagree on that one. But the 2005 “No” Sauvignon Blanc, which I am having this evening is great – so thanks for the recommendation!

  42. September 27, 2006

    Evan S

Nice episode. Looking forward to 100. Appreciate the explanation about potential conflicts. Get used to it. Parker has to deal with the ‘parkerization’ question every day. As long as you wear two hats, you will hear this grumbling, more so as you become more successfully exposed. Keep up the good work. I enjoy WLTV!

  43. September 27, 2006

    Gary,

Great job with WLTV. Don’t let those neg blogs get you worked up. You’ve been genuine from the start. WLTV is not carrying the store and the people that never been there and haven’t had the personnal experience with your staff are truely missing out that Wine Library is a service operation looking to make the customers happy. You’ve given the excellent suggestions on wine to try and never felt like the WLTV was purely a marketing campaign. Only thing I have to complain about is that we have to wait till next week for the 100th episode. Thanks for a great job these past 99 episodes!!

    Best regards!!

    Gary,
Don’t get down on the WLTV concept because of the naysayer’s (the Jets are depressing enough). They will always be there in every aspect of life. Some people spend far too much time looking for ways to be offended rather than sitting back and enjoying what people have to offer taking the good with the bad. I can relate to the apparent conflict of interest, but I have watched every episode thus far, and based on this find them unfounded. Believe me when I tell you that I have a low tolerance for the mundane, and WLTV has always been raw, fresh, and enlightening. Does this mean I have loved every wine that you recommended? Of course not, nor have I loved every wine recommended by big wine critics like Tanzer, Parker, etc. Watch the show and form your own opinions! If someone honestly feels that it is worthless propaganda for Wine Library, then nobody is forcing them to watch.

I also feel that, as long as you are adding value and education, you have the right to profit from your WLTV endeavors. I love WLTV and want it to succeed!

Already starting to feel a twitch from WLTV withdrawl.

    Al D

Hey Gary great episode. You told me to remind you how to search for wines that have been sold out and folks would want to check tasting notes, price, score etc. so I am reminding you. Do an episode on Sakes please. thanks.

I liked this one Gary. Believe it or not I have never had the KJ Chard!!! I was actually tempted to pick one up the other day and for the 10-12 bucks I always find something else that “I think” would be better for the price. Someday I will pick one up and I am sure that it will be decent enough. You know what – I have to now – I really like the oaky, buttery chards as long as they bring the fruit with them. Ya know what – I hope I like it – LOVE IT – I doubt it – For some reason all the stuff I LOVE is not $10-12 bones…. I live to find EXTREME VALUE!!! Like my recent purchase of 2001 Heitz Marthas for $39 bones – I LIVE FOR IT!!!

I guess “SUDDO” question of the day time: What is everyone been drinking?? Thanks Brandon for the lastest!!!

    Grant Gallagher

    Hey Gary.
I’ve been away from wltv for about a week. I want to add my voice here. It’s important I think. I cannt believe that anyone, ANYONE, who has watched WLTV for any length of time would think you would use it to push wine. It is simply ridiculous. Aside from your personal integrity, you are simply too candid in your comments. It IS frustrating when people are cynical, but your core audience and much of your casual audience too, wine expert or not, big buyer or not, knows that you speak your mind. I can perfectly well believe that you’ve gotten flak for some of the things you’ve said – that’s what happens when you call it like you see it. Good for you, I say and long may you continue.

The wines: – I didn’t like SIlver Oak the two times I had it. Never tasted Luna. Find Kendal Jackson rich and oaky as you say and thin with a slight bitterness behind. DOn’t knoe Corvo. Haven’t had Mouton since I was a child practically and it was hard tannic stuff back then ans yes, thin (”needs more grapes”).

Sounds like you have a great week lined up. Enjoy it!

    best regards
    Grant

Hello all WLTV watchers, esp. those here in Chicago! My name is Douglas, and Gary has been kind enough to answer several of my questions the past few weeks. Since there isn’t a Frappr map for WLTV viewers yet (hint, hint), I was wondering if other Chicago fans of WLTV would like to get together for dinner out at some future date? Maybe we can all bring our favorite WL reviewed wine to one of the (many) BYOB restaurants here in Chicago.

Or maybe we can just root against the Jets one Sunday afternoon while sipping some Goose Islands or Three Floyds!

If yor’re interested in getting together, please email me off the board, thanks!

Hi Gary! I am actually happy you are taking a few days off to get ready for #100. Here’s question for you when/if you have time: Do you think investing in futures is worthwhile for those of us still learning about wine? Or is it better to leave futures to the experts?

    GaryV,

Been catching up on episodes I missed, and once again I’m excited to test some new “waters”. My wife accuses me of having a WLTV addiction and / or a man-crush on you, but the bottom line is it’s fun to taste wines vicariously.

Question for you – what’s a very good Rioja in stock at WineLibrary for under $30 to have with my pizza this week? Planning to come in for the B&S special, and would love to experience the combo.

Enjoy the short break – my wife thanks you!

Gary, sorry you seem so pissed today. I have been a WL customer since I moved to Short Hills over 5-years ago. There are several basic reason: (i) selection — I have had the ability to try wines that I have never heard of before or even knew existed; (ii) price — other stores, at best, have the same price for a few of your selections, but not accross the board and (iii) service — I wanted some 2003 Ducru — WL did not have any — so one of your sale’s associates took my number, tracked down some within a day, called me back — all at a price that was fair and reasonable. The notion that you pimp certain wines is silly — I would try to ignore those comments. In any event, enjoy the holidays, looking forward to #100.

P.S. The Jets suck — Go Pats.
P.S.S. You need to improve the Scotch selection.

Gary, I love WLTV. It’s the one thing that I really look forward to watching each evening. Please don’t listen to the naysayers. You can never please everyone. I predict that WLTV will be a very big phenomenon in the wine world and I am confident that you will be rewarded for your efforts.

    RUSS J
Thanks for the recognition you gave me in Comment #17 regarding my defending Gary in Ep #97’s comments section. I’m believed strongly in what I was saying and am very proud of that.

GOL (and all WLTVer’s who have left comments since the Sreadsheet was launched)

Thanks for all of the compliments on the Spreadsheet(SS). All of the Column Headers that are on the WEB SS are exactly as I had set up my initial SS, including the episode #. However, it was Gary and WL IT guy, Brian Woolley, who added the LINK feature to this (I agree GOL that this is sweet). PLEASE give Brian Wooley big shout outs.

As Gary stated on Monday, I initially created the SS for me. I want to make it clear that the “WL Price” and “WL Code” columns have always been there. In fact, a few weeks ago, as we were getting closer to the SS launch, I sent an email to Gary urging him to make this point clear. I knew that Gary philosophy was to seperate his WL business from WLTV and I didn’t want anybody to think, “Oh look how he’s incorporating the WL price and code”. Anyway just wanted to put this out there for the record.

BrandonM…I like how you caught Sam Zen’s sign off too!
I have already started getting comfortable and coming to the realization that by Friday night I will be lying in the tub shaking and kicking for my WLTV fix!
Actually this is perfect as I am going out of town (to San Francisco) next week…BTW Ian Dorin and Gary hooked me up so big it is ridiculous! IF ANYONE IS GOING TO A WINE PRODUCING AREA YOU MUST CONTACT GARY!!!! He told us to about 20 episodes ago so don’t feel bad. I know that I am going to have a trip of a lifetime because of these guys. I can’t thank them enough!
I am going to have to get back for the QOD. I will have to pull up some of the old videos and watch them before I pick a favorite…although I think I know which one it will be.
Gary, again great episode…I knew you would set the record straight…Good luck on your fast and warm wishes on Yom Kippur.

Gary…you were supposed to eat the mangos on the air!!!
Try them with the skin on. Then if you can find some green mangos…chop them into little squares, put them in a bowl with some fresh key lime juice, salt, white vinegar, and a pinch of sugar. Heaven!

    Gary,

Thanks for removing the green screen and bringing back the classic WLTV. It is easier on the eyes and feels like home again. Thanks for not going all George Lucas on us and destroying the simplicity we love. It is the content, your knowledge, personality, integrity and honesty that keeps us coming back. It is not the digital effects.

    Silver Oak gets Vaynerchuk’d!

Even good Silver Oak has always been a disappointment to me. For the amount of money that label commands it should be a complex wine. I always find it underperforms and at best it is a smooth, silky Cabernet that can be a bit too straightforward and boring. I’ve never understood the oooos and ahhhs over this wine. It has become an upscale “brand” by positioning itself as an expensive, desirable “it” wine. Nice marketing, but there are much better wines out there. I feel the same way about Screaming Eagle which is an overpriced cult status wine. I’ll take Staglin, Ernie Els and Kathryn Kennedy over those two any day.

SS Chris (I nominate that as your new blog name for this blog, kinda cool, all WLTVers know what it stands for but it also sounds like a ship), didn’t mention this but I also find the link to the wine as sold at WL useful… I’m using those links to build my order that will come free to Chi on Nov 20 after DA BEARS stomp the J-E-T-S’s!

What the hell? one week without WLTV, are you crazy? I can’t belive what I am hearing, 7 days waiting time is waaay too much. But also it is going to be one great episode, the big one, 100 and counting, so I will behave and be a good boy until next week.
I don’t want to discourage you, but frankly I don’t see the Jets winning over the Colts, 3-0 Colts are a better team right now.
I have a question for you, I have three sons, 11, 8 and 7, how do I introduce them to the world of wine, of course I not going to give them a full glass to taste, but a little sip can get them to start tasting what is wine all about. I have heard that in Europe the parents start teaching their kids at a young age how to drink and enjoy wine. Maybe my two smaller boys are too little, but the biggest one can start to learn how to do it. What do you think,if they are too small what will be the best age to start teaching them the joy of wine?
One more question, where is the spreadsheet, I don’t see it anywhere in the page, can you put a bigger link on it.
    Thanks

Absolutely F*%#’n great episode Gary. You hit all the nails on the head. Hope you enjoy your business travel and a few days off. I am sure we’re all happy to wait for episode 100! I’d like to pose a question of the day for your 100th episode. How many people watch you outside the US of A?! It would be great to get an idea of how many of us… like me in the Barossa South Australia, or Mexico like Rafa are out there. While you’ve been to most of the worlds wine regions, perhaps there is an opportunityg for a GV World Tour WLTV Spectaular… I am sure some of us out of towners may be able to assist with some sponsorship. Matt from South Australia (wine capital of Australia)!

    GOL (comment #63),

So, SS Chris for SpreadSheet Chris. I think I like that…but, is it too “Ernst & Young”? Spreadsheets are associated with accountants, now I’m like one of the accounting nerds that are annoyingly trotted out on award shows? I don’t know if this is a “bad-ass” enough handle. LOL

Just Kidding…I like it. How’s this (see my name below) at least for a transition period? Sort of like John Couger to John Cougar Mellancamp to John Mellancamp OR Puff Daddy to P Diddy to Diddy– this requires a name change transition stategy. . What do you think?? LOL

    Gary,
Please accept my sincere apology if my comment offended you in any way.
In my mind I compare you to King of all media in the wine business.
Brutally honest, controversial at times but always entertaining, just like him in his early terrestrial period, you are revolutionizing your industry.

Don’t take our comments too seriously. Things get out of control whet friends are talking, especially after a glass or two.

    Now to the wines.

Agree on KJ, but don’t remember Corvo being that bad. I think I even enjoyed it. Perhaps food helped. Actually I had similar feeling about Falesco vitiano.

Another big name that should’ve been brought to the table is Mondavi. In my opinion his $10 Cab is so bad that the name of the Californian wine pioneer should not be on the label.

Gary, you know that most wine drinkers start with the big names. How about an episode on what I call a second tier: Boggle, Ravenswood, Rosenblum, Rabbit Ridge, Echelon, etc?

    Matthew L (comment #37),

You are right!! That was was just a VaynerCLANK for the Silver Oak. I missed it the first time and thank you for pointing it out (comment #37). I had to re-watch, but it definitely is a VaynerCLANK, albeit a mini-CLANK. As per a previous postings, this is, by far, my FAVORITE and I believe BEST of the all the VAYNER-ISMS. It is also the RAREST!!

QOD for WLTVer’s(since there are no episodes, we’ll have to amuse ourselves)

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE VAYNERISM? The NOMINIES are:

#1-The VaynerSHAKE (when GV is swooshing the wine, but before he spits, he begins to shake his head in disapproval)

#2-The VaynerNOD (opposite of the SHAKE–he begins nodding his head in approval prior to spitting)

#3-The VaynerCLANK (this ususally comes after a VaynerSHAKE–the SHAKE happens before he spits, and then after he spits, he CLANKS his teeth together multiple times–this means he REEEALLY doesn’t approve–watch #99 again with the SILVER OAK and you’ll see a mini-CLANK)

    ******PLEASE CAST YOUR VOTE******

You all know my vote–the CLANK!!

NOTE: Now that I am entering info for ALL wines into the SS (for all new Ep’s starting w/ #97)including the wines’s GV “passes” on, I will definitely be entering ALL VaynerCLANK’s into the Tasting Notes section. Unfortunately, since the SILVER OAK is currently sold out, I cannot enter anything for this wine yet (I’ll be working on it and will post a comment if and when I have it worked out).

Obviously, my vote is for the VaynerCLANK!!

Rafa…you may get knocked for even thinking about giving your kids alcohol by some of the bloggers here but I don’t think it is a bad idea to start the 11 year old. I remember my dad introducing me to the world of alcohol at about age 13. Of course things were very limited (like a sip every 6 months) but he would describe things to me that really made drinks more understandable (I started with beer). First and foremost my father explained and hammered into me that beer, wine and everything in “this locked cabinet” is for adults ONLY but “here son, taste this. That is why we are drinking it. It tastes good.” Ya follow what I’m saying?
The down side to being introduced to quality alcohol? Man was my wallet hurting in college!!! I could not drink the horse piss my friends were drinking and always had to fork out what at that time was big money for something of quality!

Well guys after thinking about some of my favorite episodes I have not yet been able to nail a single one down yet…
You have Episode #64 which was the WL store tour. So funny with the Benny Hill music!
Then there is Episode #39 which turned me on to the 2000 Chateau Henye Tojaki Aszueszencia. My god that is one of (one of) the best things I have ever put in my mouth!
Episode #58 was the “I’m not pissed” episode. That one set the foundation for what would become WLTV standards…and he said “Burgundy is over rated.” HAHAHA
So I’m still debating…I have a few other stand outs both early on and later but I am not sure I can pick just one!
Wow a viewer from Australia. The world is yours WLTV!!!! MMmuuuuwwwaaaaahahhhahhhahahahhhhaaaaaa!!!
Julius…who ever said that was an absolute GENIUS!!!! I am a triathlete so I love to ride my bike…I am normal so I love sex…and I am an oenophile so I love wine…That guy has me totally figured out!

We were in Napa a couple weeks ago and Silver Oak was one of the places I was really looking forward to visiting. We tasted the current release cabs and came to the same conclusion that you did – we were disappointed and found many cabs at other wineries far superior. I was wondering how we could have been so off when this seems to be a universally well regarded wine, so I feel much better after watching today’s episode.

Thanks for being so honest with your opinions. Keep up the great work!

    Gary,
By now most new postings will be redundant, but in the blog spirit I have to add my own. I have become somewhat evangelistic with all my friends getting them to watch WTLV. Getting into WLTV has caused me to get ‘back’ into wines in a big way. Work and kids created a void for a number of years during which I always appreciated a good bottle, but I wasn’t keeping pace with all the changes – thus one of my earlier comments ‘explain New World vs. Old World’. In fact, while I don’t believe you have addressed that point directly, it is clear to me what you mean because I have gone out and tasted different bottles you described using those terms. I also enjoy being part of this blog community – I love the comments almost as much as watching you give the ‘G-nod’ to a wine you didn’t expect to give a 90 pt. rating to.
As for my favorite episode – can’t say I have one. Got hooked back around episode 40-something, but loved the tour of WL in #64 – got me to come to the shop and actually meet you – and for the sheer creativity of it #96.
BTW – SS Chris (comment 59)mentioned my recommendation for Equinox in DC – if you want some insite you can e-mail me as I have a connection: nickjp@verizon.net .

Don’t change your style or your M.O. Use the holidays to recharge the batteries for the next 100+ episodes!

    Gary,

It is truly a shame that you even had to address us with your topic of the first 5 minutes. I pity people who always seek the ulterior motive, and are unable to take things at face value, they obviously don’t understand how much extra work is involved in dealing with all the minutia of actually reading all the comments and your personal e-mails and everything else. You have to love doing what you do in order to keep it going. If I were running WLTV in addtition to a huge wine retail store and internet operation, I would have given up by now and would have moved on. I have tremendous respect for you and look forward to meeting you in person one day to tell you that face to face.

Thanks again for all you do — and I do like LJ Pouilly-Fousse (don’t know how to spell it though), it is one of the few Chardonnays I do like. Most are just too oaky.

Gary, I’m a little miffed that you didn’t mention earlier that you were going to be down here in DC. How are we supposed to meet the man and shake his hand for all the honest commentary and heat you must be taking from the ’suppliers’. I have one thing to say to them:

bravo…let em know what you’re about! i have always believed in what you are saying…and i knew i was right when buying your raves and agreeing completely with your assessments…i think you and i like the same things in wine. this was another great “everyman’s” episode. i have not drank any of these wines in a long time, but these were the wines i started out on many years ago, so it is nice to see you taste them and give some thoughts, which seem to follow my thoughts that lead me to “better” wines. these wines are not great for people that like wine, but they are great for people who want to like wine…and therefore lead people, who brave the bad wines, to better ones. “smoky garbage” is classic!!!! once again i will just say thanks for what you are doing…and let me say that my favorite gary v move is the jaw knashing after a taste of bad wine…
    and just for you…Go Jets!

Rafa – It’s probably not fair to ask Gary to comment on underage drinking – he could possibly lose his license for doing so. So while he probably can’t, I can. The US is such a puritanical society it’s ridiculous. There’s guys who are 18 getting killed over in Iraq who can’t open a bottle of beer legally. Any kid with even half a brain can make their own alcohol (take a bottle of lemonade, add some sugar, add some yeast and put a balloon over the top). IMO the legislation over this behavior is crazy and leads to more problems. So I say teach your kids to be responsible. Don’t get drunk in front of your kids. Show your kids you can have a glass of wine with your dinner every night and it’s not a problem — it’s all about leading by example. I think a big problem has to do with alcohol being considered forbidden fruit (even though it’s really, really easy to make). We give kids alcohol at church and that’s okay, so why not in our homes?

    Gary,
First of all, big thanks for listening to the request from myself and others to get rid of the pea-green screen and return to the standard backdrop with offbeat and occasionally bizarre hanging accompaniments. Please bring back some little action figures (Andre the Giant?) to hug the Vayner-NOD wines and we’ll be all set. I agree with GOL’s comment that it would be great if the shots of the wine labels could be made bigger in the window for a few seconds. Thanks also for mentioning ahead of time what’s happening with the schedule and when we can expect the roll-out on big 100. Really looking forward to it!! Congratulations for all you’ve done to champion your straight shot opinions and weathering the storms behind the scenes for the last 99 episodes. Today was another example with the ‘02 Silver Oak. I was hoping it would do better, but like you say, you just weren’t feeling it. Last Silver Oak I drank was a ‘95 Alexander Valley a couple years ago, and it showed well, or at least true to its flashy dancer form. I’ll raise a glass of something extraordinary to you on Saturday Gary (it’s my wife’s 40th birthday), and here’s to hoping someone sends in some clips for your crew to put up while we wait for the next WLTV installment. Cheers, C

The question was asked in a previous episode, “Does Robert Parker give 90+ points to EVERYTHING?”
The chart below (if it shows up as a readable chart) says no. While his percentage of 90+ wines has increased over the past 20 years, probably as a result in the improvement of both viticulture and viniculture, it is still signicantly less than the number of wines scored below 90.

    Vintage 90+ Below 90
    2004 1551 2366
    40% 60%
    2000 2046 3563
    36% 64%
    1995 1275 2775
    31% 69%
    1990 897 2075
    30% 70%

    On a lighter note!

    The Bathtub Test…
It doesn’t hurt to take a hard look at yourself from time to time, and this should help get you started. During a visit to the mental asylum, a visitor asked the Director what the criterion was which defined whether or not a patient should be institutionalized.

“Well,” said the Director, “we fill up a bathtub with cheap wine, then we offer a teaspoon, a teacup and a bucket to the patient and ask him or her to empty the bathtub.”

“Oh, I understand,” said the visitor. “A normal person would use the bucket because it’s bigger than the spoon or the teacup.”

“No.” said the Director, “A normal person would pull the plug. Do you want a bed near the window?”

Long-time viewer, first-time commenter…Irony of ironies! I just got back from a friend’s 40th b-day that included no less than a ‘66 Cheval Blanc and ‘66 Cote de Beaune (forget the exact app) in addition to ‘88 Stag’s Leap, ‘95 Krug et. al. and what do I get?? Plonkville!! But seriously, it is truly all good and I can’t believe you had to address the haters but they obviously are newbies and haven’t seen you give the pazzzzz to some big sellers and whatnot. I’m actually in Hiroshima, Japan and since our daily drinkers come at prices a little bit higher than the US it’s good to know that it makes sense to pass on those ultra-cheapies. There’s still lot’s of good deals and decent vino to be had here so I appreciate WLTV on all levels. Can’t wait for episode 100 ….Cheers,

    Gary,

I never questioned your rational for doing WLTV. I always thought you were doing the blog to educate your consumers and the public. You knew that by doing a video blog on the internet that your viewer ship would be worldwide, not just the WL marketing area. Therefore, I believe, that when you are shopping in your store for the wines to taste on WLTV, you are not thinking of wines that only WL carries. You pick wines that interest you and wines that have a good distribution. The more wines that you can get people to try, the better for the industry in general.

You rate your wines honestly and without fear of your distributors. While it gets you in some trouble with some of your distributors, they also realize that the audience you reach is greater then much of the marketing that they could do. People like you and listen to what you have to say. While every pallet is different and some may not like the same wines that you do, people will go into their local wine shop looking for the wines that you said were good, no different then wines that are recommended by WS or RP. – There is just no shelf talker yet!

Keep up the good work and I look forward to episode 100.
    Thanks Gary.

Chris Stanisci – Thanks for the spreadsheet. I will admit that I thought the links for the code and prices were by WL, not that it made a difference for me. It is just convenient. Great work.

I also have to vote for the CLANK. It is hysterical when Gary does it.

Brce S (Comment #54) – email me for another place for scotch. Gary has a great selection of wine (he even says he does not drink anything else other than coke). I will not promote another store here, but sometimes we need a fix for something other than wine.

I have been a viewer of WLTV since its inception, and although I have not contributed as many comments as some others, I do submit them when I feel they might be either useful or entertaining. I also, as some others have, offer constructive criticism in the interest of “improving the product.” It is in this vain that I make the following suggestion – stop scoring the wines. It’s great to have you describe the wines (color, nose, palate, etc.) and to give them a Nod or Pass, but since your scoring system is for the most part capricious I would find it more informative to just say that you find the wine to be bad, fair, good, very good, excellent, nirvana or other words of that ilk. Let those (WA, WE, WS, ST) deal with the numbers game. You should just be saying whether you liked it or didn’t like it, how much and why.

On an entertaining note, I offer this excerpt form the Wine Spectator:

The best wine writers, of course, have a distinctive voice. (Having a good palate goes without saying.) I’ve often wondered what it might be like if our most famous writers reviewed wine.

Just imagine, if you will, the possibilities …

Ernest Hemingway: “It is a wine. A good wine, not a great one. It is red. Wet. Its power is obvious, obvious and powerful the way men are, men who hunt and fight in bars. Real men. Except for the smell. The wine smells better than the men.”

J.D. Salinger: “Boy, I hate Pinot Noirs like this, I really do. It’s all big and ripe and phony. I mean, it’s like the winemaker is the most terrific liar you ever saw. He’s from California, so what do you expect. He took these perfectly OK Pinot grapes and decided to make Syrah out of them or something. Anyway, if you like Burgundy then you’ll probably have a hemorrhage or want to commit suicide if you come anywhere near this crap. I am not kidding.”

Deepak Chopra: “Is this wine outstanding or simply mediocre? Just by asking that question we reveal our true agenda. Enlightenment will not come through labeling one wine as good and another evil. The real question we should ask ourselves is: Why do we feel the need to define wines at all? Only by accepting the duality inherent in every wine do we come to know the divine. Price, of course, is also important.”

Charles Dickens: “I can scarcely portray the chronicle of events, morbid and precipitous, that find me at this late hour putting pen to paper in fervored accounting. But, dear reader, I will spare you the circumstances and coincidences and instead will offer vigorous praise of a most delicious claret. The Château Margaux 1847 is not the frail, feminine red portrayed by many in the English trade; instead it is effusive and elegant, with an excellent complexity. At 11 shillings, it will not send you to the poorhouse.”

Woody Allen: “It’s n-n-n-not like I’m the kind of person who drinks Chianti, usually, I mean, I eat pasta and I swell up like a tick on an artery. And garlic, don’t even get me started. Yet I like this tart little red in a half-hearted Jungian sort of way. I think back to those blind tastings with the Rabinsky twins, Doris and Phoebe. I get lightheaded just thinking about it. I still have one of their black leather blindfolds.”

    Shakespeare:
“O nectar, a poetry profound, a liquid fair and hedonistic,
a drink meant truly not for mortals but the gods of misty yore.
Burdened not by filtering or fining or such slings and arrows
beset by fools. Get thee to a bottle.”

Raymond Chandler: “I’ve swilled better gasoline. That at least was at gunpoint. I should stick with Scotch but I have a thing for blondes, blondes like this Chardonnay. I thought it was classy, it had legs tall and sleek as the Chrysler Building. But it turned out to be trouble, like most blondes, a lot of flashy oak and cheap perfume. You’d think I’d learn my lesson.”

Mister Rogers: “Can you say “trockenbeerenauslese”? I sure can’t. That’s a big word, boys and girls. Silly Germans. This wine is sweet like candy, fresh little candies. You like candy, don’t you? Sure. Sure. One sip, and I’m off to the Neighborhood of Make-Believe.”

William Faulkner: “A wine that calls to mind those languorous Southern summers when the days were oppressively warm and furious and impotent and you wandered the hills around Jacksonboro with your third cousin twice-removed on your mother’s side, Finnegan Russell (the elder, not his son who everyone called Buck) and his half-witted dog.”

    Dr. Seuss:
    “One wine.
    Red wine.
    This wine.
    Bad wine.”

I usually have a Dr. Pepper with mine on the corner of Van Buren and Clark in the city (I never remember the name of the place) or a Root Beer at Portillos if I’m in the burbs. I haven’t had occasion to drink wine with one. I’m assuming you have?

Here’s some mixology from WIRED to entertain while we wait for the next episode:

These days the menus at the hautest purveyors of haute cuisine may seem more scientific than culinary – tobacco-flavored ice cream, extruded vegetable noodles, fried mayonnaise. Chefs call it molecular gastronomy, but why should they have all the fun? Some of the world’s greatest bartenders are working on their own version, molecular mixology, using food science principles and laboratory techniques to develop off-the-wall flavor combinations and surprising textures. We asked a few of our fave drink doctors for the recipes to their most futuristic libations. OK, you may not see military-grade lasers and liquid nitrogen at local watering holes anytime soon, but who knows? Someday “the usual” might just be a cherry tomato filled with solidified gin and served in a shot glass. Bottoms up!

    MARY’S FRUIT
    Mixologist: Jamie Boudreau
    8 cherry tomatoes
    4 1⁄2 oz. gin
    3 dashes Tabasco
    2 dashes Worcestershire
    1 dash of salt
    1⁄4 tsp. agar
Core tomatoes. Whisk remaining ingredients together and boil. Spoon gin mixture into hollowed-out tomatoes and let cool until solid. Serve in shot glasses.

    DEHYDRATED RUM AND COKE
    Mixologist: Eben Freeman
1⁄2 tsp. cola-flavored Pop Rocks (special-ordered from Japan)
1⁄4 tsp. powdered rum (available from industrial flavor houses)
Combine ingredients. Serve on demitasse spoon.

    CARAMELASERIZED WINE
    Mixologist: Homaro Cantu
    1 vanilla bean
    6 oz. red wine
Clamp vanilla bean below an inverted wine glass. Heat bean with class-IV laser until mist coats inside of glass. Remove bean, flip glass, fill with wine, and serve.

    JELLIED GIN AND TONIC
    Mixologist: Eben Freeman
    1 frozen lime
    2 oz. simple syrup
    1 1⁄4 tsp. citric acid
    1⁄4 tsp. bicarbonate of soda
    1⁄4 tsp. confectioner’s sugar
1 1⁄2 sheets of sheet gelatin
    1 oz. gin
    2 oz. tonic water
Freeze lime and cut into chips with deli slicer. Coat slices in simple syrup and 1 tsp. citric acid; bake at 150 degrees until crisp. Mix bicarbonate of soda, sugar, and remaining citric acid. Soften sheet gelatin in cold water for two minutes. Warm gin and add gelatin. Pour into a shallow baking pan lined with plastic wrap, add tonic, and refrigerate for two hours. Cut into 1⁄2-inch cubes. Put cube onto lime chip, sprinkle on sugar-soda-acid mixture (the acid combines with the baking soda for a carbonated feeling on the tongue), and serve.

Julius. Truly awesome. I have to copy that for my own repeated use. Gary, I would never accuse you of pushing wine, just occasional bad taste! No but seriously, I’m one of those Silver Oak haters. The crap has been pure adulterated poison since the outset. I think the first time I had it was in the early nineties and my first reaction was, “they sure chose the right name,” and then laughing because just seemed like a charicature of California wine. All fruit and oak with absolutely no depth of flavor, no possible shelflife, almost a charicature of serious wine. Just in case you think I would pan all california Cabs, I have had Dunns, Opus, and Dominus wines that I have loved, as well as the usual Kalin I always cite. Loved the KJ comment–right on spot. Interested to hear the Jadot comments, though I find that Jadot becomes proportionately better the more you spend. By that I mean that his cheap wines have mediocre QPR whereas as you get into the $30-40 range and higher they becomes significantly better buys and classical examples of their appelation(s).
On the whole episode, I liked the concept and there is a great deal more to work with in the same vein. First growth Bordeaux (or slightly lesser ones). How about a Petrus (speaking of overated). Or again, a Beaucastlel from chateauneuf, a DRC, Screaming Eagle, Two Hands, etc etc etc. Might bust the budget but it would be good.
    Red Burgundy?
Anyway, looking forward to #100. Have a great “break.”

First thing – I think there were only one or two comments that posed the ? about Gary’s motives with WLTV. The folks who did post the question probably hadn’t even given 3 minutes of thought to the idea because if they had, they’d have quickly realized that even a con artist or an actor couldn’t consistently (through some 400+ wines tasted on air) manipulate his choices and responses in order to move inventory or whatever else might have been implied.
Next thing – I kind of wish that the first 5 – 10 comments were comments, not “first”, “in”, “made it”, etc. Just a wish.
Next thing – If Gary CAN use WLTV – (an incredibly inovative and cutting-edge approach to wine-review), to benefit his family’s business, more power to him! It’s not unethical OR bad to figure out ways to PROFIT from providing a unique service! This is America –
Next thing – Rafa – I like your question. My husband and I have a 21+ son, 19+ daughter and 14+ daughter. From the time they were 2, we have encouraged and allowed them to taste what we drink. At age 2, we let them dip and lick the cork or stick their finger in the glass and lick it. At the age of 3 my husband had our son Philip at the LA County Fair and was tasting wine. He put Philip up on the counter and let him stick his chubby little finger into the current taste. Philip (who only knew one wine name), licked his finger and then stated loudly, “Mmmm! Pinot Noir!” Being – by CHANCE – that it was Pinot Noir, the other tasters were blown away! It’s a fun memory! But the thing is, we’ve talked about wine (and other alcohol) and tasted it and, as they grew older, allowed them a short glass with us at the table (15 – 16 years old). When they learned to drive, and until they are past 21, they are not allowed behind the wheel for the rest of the day if they’ve had even 2 swallows of alcohol with us. By the time Philip turned 21, he KNEW how to appreciate and enjoy wine, beer, hard cider, etc. He KNEW his limits and never had any desire to get wasted. Alcohol has become, for our kids, just another fun aspect of cuisine. I think our approach helped to develop that attitude.
Last thing – The cheese/wine show was good. However, I was slightly grossed out by the chewing (while talking), swishing, spitting (ESPECIALLY when GV used the glass of water to do a big mouth swish and spit) and I hope nobody had to look in that spit bucket other than Gary….
PS – How about Rose? There’s some fantastic stuff coming along from Argentina, Italy, even California (I just had a Syrah blush that was really good). The good ones aren’t cheap so, Gary – can you do a broad tasting so we don’t have to?

Good show, I love the stinky feet and burnt garbage nose… I have been watching for a while but this is my first post. Cant wait for the big show.

    Gary,

Anybody that accuses you of pushing wine you are just trying to sell for a big profit is stupid. A recent show where you really liked a Merlot (the Charles Creek?) but said to not buy at the current price because you were going to place a big order and get a better price was the biggest evidence of this. Between that and the bad reviews of some wines that you almost have to stock, you have proven yourself to be of the utmost integrity.

Unfortunately, most people do not have this level of integrity and so they look for the worst in those that do. Don’t let it get to you. Keep up what you are doing and let the conspiracy theorists have their evil little suspicions.

I can tell already from the posts that it is going to be a long week without WLTV.

    PattyO (& other WLTV Viewers),

I could be wrong, but I think that many of you missed the actually exchange that, in my humble opinion, prompted Gary’s decision to address this issue on this Ep #99.

There were some mild references to this subject in comments sections of #97 and #98 and, I believe, this is what Patty O is referring to when she says, “I think there were only one or two comments that posed the ? about Gary’s motives with WLTV.”

I suggest that you go back to Comment #127 on Episode #96 which is where, I believe, it all started. I defended Gary and WLTV, but it turned into a quite a debate. I’m not putting this out there to single anyone out, because I believe it has been resolved with that viewer. My intention is to shed light on the reason why Gary felt the need to respond. After reading that exchange (approx. 10-11 comments), I think you will all have a better understanding of why Gary felt the need to respond the way he did. I know that I, for one, understand completely.

    Anyway, hope this helps.

    SS Chris (Stanisci)

ChrisR, thanks for the vote. One question, have you ever seen a “full-blown” VaynerCLANK? The one on this episode was a mini-CLANK (I actually missed it in my initial viewing). If you haven’t seen a full-blown VC, we’ll have to try and locate one, so that you can be a more informed voter.

If anyone can help locate a full-blown CLANK, please let us know. I will look when I get a chance, but could use some help .

TimF – Emmolo 2005 Syrah Rose – ( though it’s just BARELY the palest pink – fantastic color). Emmolo Family Vineyard – Napa. You can go to http://www.emmolowine.com and they have a list of their distributors for each state they’re in. The day after I drank it in a wine bar, they were doing a tasting of the same wine in a local wine store, $18 I think. How I ended up drinking it was, I was going to share a ribeye with my family at the bar, and yet it’s still 90 degrees outside where I live – so I wanted something cool to drink. I asked the wine-tender (who knows us pretty well) for a red that’s mascarading as a white – he said the Emmolo was EXACTLY what I wanted – the depth, “weight” and complexity of something that could stand up under GOOD BEEF, but refreshing and cool. It was the perfect fit – the great peppercorn nose was like a well-selected accessory with a great outfit!

I was thinking about Gary’s post way up at comment 28, if I were to do a show what would I have in my ‘celler’ to taste for the people. I realized I’d have to do a South American episode:

    2005 Elsa Bianchi Malbec Elsa
    2005 Altos Las Hormigas Malbec
2005 Altos Las Hormigas Bonarda Colonia las Liebres
2003 Bodegas Caro (Barons de Rothschild / Catena) Cabernet-Malbec Amancaya
2004 Concha y Toro Carmenère Casillero del Diablo
2004 Concha y Toro Cabernet Sauvignon Marqués de Casa Concha Puente Alto

So, drawing from what you have at home, what would your show be?

Hi Julia (comment 108), I store wine at NY Fine Wine Storage in White Plains. They are affiliated with Zachy’s but I store wine there that I have purchased from all over the place. I am still hoping for a NJ facility eventually.

Regarding Favorite Episodes, I agree w/many that have been mentioned. Having the SS makes this easy to peruse. Here’s my list:

#4 TOUR OF THE WINE ROOM

    #18 WHAT DOES DECANTING DO?

    #42 HOW TO TASTE WINE?

#50 SPANISH WINES & TRIP TO SPAIN – I don’t think anyone mentioned this one-it’s great showing both video footage and a great still picture montage of the trip. Gary, brought 12 people on this trip & went to dinner at the #1 rated restaurant in the world. MUST WATCH!

#57 WE’RE BACK & #58 I’M NOT PISSED – this is a combo that is especially relevant based on Gary’s opening today (this is Gary’s return after a long layoff where he explains the true philosopy of the WLTV moving forward) MUST WATCH!!

    #60 SPOOF on BRANDON’S WEDDING

#64 Benny Hill-like tour of Wine Library

#85 (1st mention of me and SS)

#95 WINES OF ALSACE (Gary mentions that he & I just met)

#96 MIXED BAG (Soprano’s Opening & the Dwight from “The Office” bobblehead is on table)

#97 WHITE BURGANDY (official SS launch)

#99 BIG NAME WINES (love how GV set the record straight—stellar!!)

My apoligies in advance for the list being slightly ChrisStan-centric! LOL

Vayner-CLANK is far and away my favorite Vaynerism.

A decent Vayner-Clank on ep #63 on the Seghesio (last wine). Not the biggest clank, but a good one.

phig…you have never liked Silver Oak, but you want a Screaming Eagle taste?
I don’t think your assesment of Silver Oak is all that fair. How many vintages have you tried? Napa / Alexander / Bonnys? I think in the early nineties Silver Oak had some wonderful cab, and definitly with some ageability to them. Maybe I’ll bring a 94 to the party if you go, and see what you think. I am not a fan of Silver Oak anymore, so don’t get me wrong, but I’ve certainly had some great ones in the past. I believe I have had more disappointing Opus bottles than Silver Oak. I’ve never tasted Screaming Eagle, but in my opinion, anything that costs $1,000 a bottle is bound to have some dissapointment to it. Howabout Rubicon? Any thoughts? I just picked up two bottles of ‘03 at the estate…tasted great at the winery, but that has fooled me before, plus, they said hold onto it four 15+ years, so it’s gonna taste different when I drink it anyway.

Others cabs I would love to hear comments / experiences about:

    Insignia
    Heitz Martha’s Vineyard
    Mondavi Reserve
    Bryant Napa Valley
    Davis Arthur Elevation 1147
    Caymus Special Selection
    Harlan
    Sloan
    Beringer Private Reserve
    Dalle Valle
    Diamond Creek
    Flora Springs Trilogy
    Groth Reserve
    Lokoya
    Stag’s Leap CASK 23
    Araujo

And so on and so on….What is everyone’s experiences with these highly rated Ca Cabs?
It seems to me that a lot of people bash Ca Cabs only because they are just that, Ca Cabs.
I’ve had good, and bad….so…just wondering.

Gary…it would be awesome to see you taste a DRC…Never have had any, but I think that’s the one Old World wine I would flip for.
Have you ever tasted Beaux Freres? Does Parker ever taste and rate his own stuff?

Last nights bottle…I know I said I’d been popping a lot of bottles and was taking the night off, but I opened a Sebastiani 2003 Sonoma Valley….CORKED! So yes I opened but didn’t get to drink any.
Now I have to open a bottle tonight, just to make up for last night.

SS Chris – I hear your concern on the nickname, but it’s a lot easier for all of us to spell than “Stanisci” :-) . So I like your solution of putting the last name in parens.

TimF, PattyO – I don’t have kids, but I lived in France in college but when I was under 21 and my personal experience backs up your comments. In my town in France (in the Loire), it wasn’t cool for HS and college kids to get drunk, which was very different than my experience in the US. I refuse to get political in this blog (this blog is too much fun), but among other things the US is backwards on these days is certainly the Serve but Can’t be Served idiocy.

—Have you ever tasted Beaux Freres? Does Parker ever taste and rate his own stuff?—

    Brandon,
I’m not Gary – I know, the resemblance is scary – and I’ve never tried Beaux Freres ( I should sometime, they’re just down the road a piece), but I do know that the Wine Advocate doesn’t review the Beaux Freres or Belles Soeurs.
I vote for a DRC tasting too, either La Tache or Romanee-Conti – I’m easy.

Gary, great show – can’t wait for 100. Hell, 200.

SS Chris – I nominate the “vayner-double” as another choice. I think I have noticed that when GV really doesn’t like something he often spits twice. I’m gonna do some back checking on this one. Otherwise, I vote for the VaynerShake, because it’s a great tip-off that you’re about to listen to a beatdown

  121. September 28, 2006

    TimF

GOL – Yeah I forgot about the serve but can’t be served deal. When I was 18 I was a room service waiter in a hotel on Marco Island, FL (yeah I’ve got some stories) for the summer. I served alcohol every day. I didn’t quite understand how it was legal for me to hold a bottle inside the hotel, but outside I was breaking the law…

  122. September 28, 2006

    GOL

TimF – Actually I was thinking “served” as in military service, reiterating your thoughts, but the terminology works in both cases and your example is another good one. The whole “drinking inside is legal but outside isn’t” is also absurd, another example of how our “holier than thou” are inferior to Europe’s (and just think, we’re about to legalize torture today)

    Hi Gary -

Great episode — interesting to see your take on such widely available (and consumed) wines. Disspointed to hear that the Silver Oak was not to your liking — although I’ve generally found the Napa far superior to the Sonoma in the vintages I’ve tried (not as many as I’d like, unfortunately). It’s good to have an objective, impartial recommendation on those level bottles, as for many of us, plunking down $50 or more for a bottle in a store is not an everyday purchase. It really underscores the difference in vintages and varieties (e.g. Napa v. Alexander), as many people might see a $50 bottle of Silver Oak as a bargain; however, if it’s not up to the best Silver Oak offers, it may be a big waste of money.

A suggestion as you get to ep 100 — How about a “Best of WLTV” case (or 1/2 case), featuring some of your favorites from the first 100 episodes. Would be fun to get some of the favorites from the various episode and price points. Of course, we could do this ourselves using the infamous spreadsheet, but might be a nice way to celebrate 100… Just a thought…

Pre – Congrats on getting to 100!

    Gary:

I have to admit, I questioned your credability early on. However, Let me say having been a regular viewer for almost a year. I’ve seen you blast both popular and unpopular wines some high priced some low. You have always been your own man and have earned my trust and respect about wine judgement.

Hey Gar, good ep again. It’s only natural you are going to get your critics as well as your fans. I’m sure it’s not easy putting yourself out there; especially, with a realistic possibility you can piss off(like you said) some of your past or present bussiness suppliers. Once again, I commend you for your integrity and taking the time from your probably “insane” busy schedule to do this.
Corvo, wow, I forgot about them. Back in the day we use to drink that along with our Reunite(do they still make that?)and Gallo. Peace, Ron

Gary – Great episode as usual.

Just one thought – as the site grows more people will post and problems will likely come up. Egos with comments etc.. I’ve seen it on other boards where people attack people for just saying their simple viewpoint. Its good to address once, but please stay above the fray with the TV portion down the line.

Its funny how everyone sees things differently. The main reason I love WLT is because you call it like you see it. Your facial expressions on some of the bad wines cracks me up.

Sorry to hear people are giving you a hard time for providing a free service to everyone. I’ve actually tried several of the sub-$10 wines you’ve been recommending and frankly they are surprisingly good. Just like to mentioned that I’ve just completed the first 100 episodes of WLTV and and it is awesome. Found the site about a week ago and I’m going through the episodes systematically so hopefully I will manage to catch up with the current episodes. Really great show, I’m pretty much a wine dummy and I’ve learned so much the pass week. Can’t wait to view the rest…..

Just a question, on this episode #99 the last wine tasted Silver Oak is not listed on the spreadsheet. Just curious is the ratings only for wines available is WL as the Silver Oak was listed as SOLD OUT.
