    Gary,
Great episode. It was very difficult trying to take you seriously as you talked about how “refined” and “elegant” and “thought-provoking” all the wines were when you had a sign next to your head reading “wine smells like poop.” Great juxtaposition.

yo gary….i wasn’t talking about what is the best source for tasting info…i was asking what is the best source for articles on growers, vineyards, etc. personally i just drink the stuff like you suggest…and get drunk, like you suggest….but i thought there might be some sort of wine magazine or something that you like to read. just wanted to hear something about you. i like the WLTV “terrior” section…interesting stuff.

QOTD: Chat Larose Trintaudon Medoc 34700…

oh yeah, and it is pronounced zero-creep…

and for “off the wall” question’s sake: i watch all the UFCs that come on PPV…always drink wine with my blood sports…any suggestions? i find that italian wines work especially well with ass-kickings…not sure why…

A bunch of episodes ago you said Central Otago was the new hot place / greatest value in pinot noir, a good backup to todays show would be to taste the only other central otago pinot you have in the store. You tasted the 3 miners which was awesome (tasted at the super tasting last night) and you gave 95 pts to, tomorrow you should taste the Amisfield 2004 Central Otago, to see how it stacks up against the big burgundies from today.

    Another great episode!

Question: We are expecting our first child in December and would like to buy a case of wine from the 2006 vintage (when it comes available) to save for his 21st birthday. I am leaning toward a Super Tuscan or Chianti and secondly a Bordeaux… I would really like to hear your suggestions for a wine that will age well for the next two decades. Keep up the good work!

    Thanks in advance, Jason

    Hi Gary,
It’s fun to watch these episodes and I really enjoy them but these are all out of my league. How about a few “value based wine shows”. Up to $10.00 and 10-15 and 15-20. That’s where I live and breath. My goal is finding great $10-$20 wines. There is no greater thrill and I do have a sophisticated pallete. I think you can do dozens of shows on these. I crave these.

Hey Gary, I agree with Coop! Enough with the $30+ episodes for a while. Let’s see some reviews on value wines. Nothing better than finding a $10 – $15 wine that is just outstanding! Gary, you have a wine store at your disposal, your viewers need your help to search out and lead us to the value juice!

Gary i have a question. I was wondering if it matters how one would store a non cork bottle of wine, either synthetic or scre cap. I mean i assume that such a bottle would not need to be stored on its side. thanks

And now a question for you, Gary (on the FAR other side of value).
Diamond Creek Lake 1997 Napa Cabernet – 5L (okay, it’s big) – SPECIAL WL price of $4,999.99 per bottle.
You can’t wear it on your finger. Can’t hang it on the wall. It’s a beverage – how does it get such a price? Have you sold any of these? Who buys them? What do YOU, Gary V., think of such a comodity?
I don’t hold out any hope that you will taste it tomorrow -
HOWEVER, perhaps you’ll consider 3 bottles – one for each of the WLTV party locations…
I see a great potential fundraiser in the price of a taste -

Gotta be honest G, not your best work today. And your decision making process for the party is beyond horrible… why give NY any more economic impetus when you’re an alleged Jersey die hard? You should’ve stayed true to your roots. Lastly, since I’m in a hemorrhaging mood, where have the VaynerNods gone? It’s like the white chick in Flavor of Love that lost her accent… it just disappeared??? Bring back the VaynerNods. Peace’out

(Good) Burgundy is great, but come on, you are showing way too much reverance to the French. When are you gonna bring the heat?

  29. October 10, 2006

    Tony S.

    Hey Gary,

I freakin’ love Burgundy. If I had to pick one style of wine to stick with for the rest of my life, it would be Burgundy. So, kudos to this episode.

Ummm, I’m working and don’t have time to look through your inventory for something interesting to try, but I have a bottle of either 2000 or 2001 (I forget which one is sitting in my storage) d’Arenburg Dead Arm Shiraz. I’d be interested in hearing about that and I’m assuming you have either of those vintages in stock. If I get a chance I’ll check to see which vintage, but no biggy.

Either way, good luck with your super tasting tonight. As for the Wine Library TV party, if it’s in Chicago, I’ll try and go. I will decline being an event co-ordinator because I’ve just got too much on my plate to tackle something like that.

    See you later,

    GO BEARS!!!

    Jim Kay

That was an awfully big glass you used today.

4 wines to try: Cabernet blends, one each from Bordeaux, California, Italy, and South Africa or Chile.

Price points should be within a $10-15 range, recent vintages of similar quality. Taste them blind and give us your thoughts on how each best would be used (aperitif, with a meal, after a meal, watering the plants). Then reveal the results.

Oh yeah, it wasn’t really $1.65 billion for YouTube, it was pieces of paper with “Google” on them that you could potentially trade for $1.65 billion, unless you tried to do it all at once, at which point you’d get less and less for each piece. Anyway, they can’t drink’em and they may not get better with age.

    Gary,
Please taste the Hess Estate Cab. IMO, year in and year out a nice weeknight cab.

I am willing to assist in the Chicago event, but being 90 miles north I can not do any field work.

We had the Corte Riva this weekend with steaks and it was fantastic, thank you for the tip. When can we expect the next gem? Waiting in Wisconsin, GO PACK.

PS: Who will have the better record, JETS or Packers? Can you say 4 & 12?

You know what would be interesting, is to turn the equation upside down and do one wine, any wine, out of multiple glasses–the little cheap plastic job you get at wine shops, a water glass, an ordinary wineglass, maybe a few different Riedels, the idea being to cement whether Riedels &c. can actually make good wines taste better and/or bad wines taste worse.

Luscious ripe cherry and strawberry character flirts with hints of cedary spice and vanilla in our 2004 Night Owl Pinot Noir. Nine months in small oak barrels temper the juicy fruit with soft, round tannins for a sensuous flavor that lingers.

Gary, How about tasting the Garretson “G”? It seems like you’ve had this in the store for a long time (is it moving at all?) I know Matt Garretson and like most his stuff. He makes so many different wines (Craic, Aisling, Mon Amie and Bulladoir are my favorities). American wines, French varities, Irish names, perfect sense.

    Jaye

I’m looking forward to joining you at a 2007 WL Tasting. In answering Zerocreap’s question you reiterated your mantra to “taste as many wines as possible.”. A couple months ago I e-mailed you to tell you I was going to Seattle, and could you recommend a winery or two for me to check out. You recommended Woodhouse Family Cellars. They are closed during the week off-season, but I decided it wouldn’t hurt to “name drop” and try to get in.

Now, please don’t let this go to your head . . . but your name worked very, very well in this instance. My husband and I got to try not only the wines they normally offer on weekends for tastings, but also all the wines WL carries (even the ones that are now sold out at the winery), and the newer vintages of the Maghee, Dussek and Darighe, too. Guess your name carries quite a bit of weight in some circles!

I have to tell you, this was quite possibly the best tasting I have ever been to! Their wines are really, really awesome. Our hostess, Victoria Lane (Director of Operations) even took the time to decant the wines for us, even letting the Darighe breathe for an hour while we stepped away for lunch and then returned. Gary, we tried all the Woodhouse wines you sell at WineLibrary (as well as wines only available locally), and I have to tell you . . . they ROCK! I will be placing an order online with WL right away. Also, you need to get their 2002 Maghee (new spelling) — as good as the ‘01 is, the ‘02 blows it away!

If you pick my number to taste tomorrow — any of the Woodhouse wines will be super since their tastes are still very fresh in my mind.

    Edge Napa Cab Sauv 2003

WL gave it a great review (90 points) and I had it recently at a store here in Chicago. Is it as good as I remember?

  53. October 10, 2006

    Jeff S.

    Gary,

I’ve really liked the mountain district Napa Valley cabs I’ve tried. Recently I bought a bottle of Ramey Diamond Mountain and it was cooked – really cooked. I had brought it to the family reunion to share with my wine expert uncle. He was gracious but I nearly gagged on the stuff. So my vote for tomorrow’s show is the 2003 Ramey Diamond Mountain Red you’ve got sitting on the shelf. You can tell me (and the world) how my bottle might have been!

Hi again, Gary. Got to change my choice for QOD. You already tasted them all in episode 46! Guess I am not as good a Vaniac as others out there. OK, so, how about we try this one: Cheeky Chick Peeper’s Blend Red 2004. It seems to be a best seller in your store, it answers the request of so many commenters for wines under $10, and it has a very cute label.

I see the Clos Du Val Napa Cabernet Sauvignon in about every store I go into at $20-$25. How about tasting that?

  56. October 10, 2006

    Tony

Yes!!!! I’ll be seeing YOU in San Francisco! These are going to be on a weekend, I’m assuming. Any ideas for dates yet? And what’s in it for the event coordinators? I’m thinking in terms of cases here.

Gary, I want to learn more about Italian wines, like Brunellos, but most of them are hideously expensive, and I’m not rich like Brandon M.

I’m wondering if the La Colombina Brunello Di Montalcino 2001 (item #6060) is worth the $32.99 it’s listed for. Wine Enthusiast gives it a 91, and it’s the cheapest Brunello on your site. Is this wine a good place to start? Is it 91 points? Is it worth $32.99, or should I just pick up 16 bottles of Two Buck Chuck (which is actually $2 out here)?

I can buy the 2001 Guigal CdP for $28.99, and that’s a stunning wine. What is buying this wine going to give me that I’d miss with the Guigal?

    Thanks Gary!

  57. October 10, 2006

    Picktown

Gary, I knew you had the Strawberry Shortcake dolls that smell like strawberries, and the ones that smell like oranges. But, I didn’t realize that you had the ones that smell like poop. Those weren’t great sellers for American Greetings. You should hold onto ‘em…hope they’re in the original packaging.

Episode suggestion: Could you taste one of the world-famous, super-hyped wines for us? Opus One, Lafite, Petrus, Latour, etc.? The names are, of course, famous, but are they really worth the price tag?

Gary… Alright, very excited that you’ll be coming to Chicago! It should be great and hopefully not that cold. Hopefully. Nice episode today, wish I’d had a Burg to drink along with you (they’re all in storage). My eye-opening wine, the wine that smacked me in the face and forced me to love it, was a 2001 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes from Dugat-Py. I mean, how could you not just fall instantly in love; pure velvet. It started a love for Burgundy that’s still going strong. Anyway, that’s all side note, as for the QOD: I’ve been eyeing this and would love to see what you think of the 2003 Behrens & Hitchcock Alder Springs Syrah. On that note, looking forward to the Chicago party!

Gary, I had a great time at the tasting this evening. Thanks for putting it together. I’ll have to recommend my favorite wine at the moment, since you actually had the semi-obscure wine there. Jarvis Cabernet 2001.

I’m on board with Copp and Bill T and others. Time to head down the value aisle. I’m always on the lookout for wines under $20 that pay off way bigger than their price. Honestly, you are at your best on WLTV when you uncover one of these gems because you get so excited about them. Well, I do too.

    Gary Vayner-chuk,

It was awsome meeting you today at the store and great that you were able to chat at the wine tasting. The wine tasting by the way, was PHENOMENOL. It was also great meeting your wife…Hello Mrs. Vaynerchuk. For you guys out there who haven’t been fortunate enough to go to the Wine Library or meet Gary, he is an AMAZINGLY nice and down to earth guy. In a world of wine snobs, you have a down to earth, cool guy like Gary. Gary is the type of guy that you chill with on Sunday wearing sweat pants and your favorite teams jersey, with a 6 pack of Coronas (with limes of course)and eating pizza….(WOW, I just described my college years…lol). In any case, Gary it was great meeting you and keep up what your doing. We all know this show is tough to do because your so busy running that incredible store, but we all thank you. By the way, thanks for taking footage of the Stallion for your show. Can’t wait to try the Rocky Zinfadel (Of course I can’t, the name is ROCKY)

    Brandon,

I’ve noticed a couple of things:

    1. Vayniacs had a huge lead all the way through the voting, but suddenly “Wine Librarians” won at the end.
    2. I don’t hear anybody calling themselves a “Wine Librarian”.
    3. People ARE still calling themselves “Vayniacs”.

So what’s up with that? I’m not sure I trust (or agree with) the results of this vote. I, for one, do NOT want a T-shirt that says “Wine Librarian” on it. “Hi, I’m Tony and I’m a Wine Librarian.” I don’t think so.

Anyone else want to weigh in on this? Time for a recount? Special election?

    Gary,
Great show tonight. I have a passion for Burgundy’s, but they are a tough to get a good one. You need to kiss some toads to find a queen. Anyway, how about a show that focuses on big brothers? You know, as an example Harlan & Maiden, Pahlmeyer & Jayson, Sonny & Cher (just kidding). It would be nice to see how they stack up to each other…

Tony, thats pretty funny. I dont think anyone would want a shirt with “Im a Wine Librarian” on it. Might as well say “kick my ass” instead. Vaniacs or Vaynerheads (sounds like some stoners though) would be the cool way to go. I have to agree on the 01 Guigal CDP. Great wine but expensive here in PA. 43 bucks. Makes the drive to the WL all that more enticing.

    Big Billy from Big D

    Tony,
All the Wine Librarian votes came in late Saturday afternoon. When voting closed Sunday – Vayniacs had won by 7 votes. Brandon in prepping the final count removed the votes from “Bogus” or “phony” email addresses. He stated in a post that over 100 Vayniac votes were removed because the Email addresses didn’t profile to a legitimate style “text@name.domain.” Wine Librarians lost less than 10 I think. I guess Librarians are better at following instructions to properly vote.

You may get your chance to vote in a vote of the marketplace. Wine Librarian Tshirts vs Vayniac Tshirts in a caged battle to the death. May the more popular Tshirt win! May the loser be vanquished to the dust bin of Wine Library history – sort of an Enoteca dumpster. Old Wine Librarians never die, they just get expectorated into spit buckets.

The truth of the matter is that, if everyone calls themselves Vayniacs, and nobody uses the term Wine Librarian, that will mean Vayniacs will have prevailed. Then we can enter into the realm of faux personality cults.

    Be of good cheer

Tony and Brandon M – Wine Librarian won? Are you kidding? I voted for Vayniac early, and checked the votes at some pt later in the voting and it wasn’t close. Wine Librarian is totally silly. No rhythm, too obvious of a nickname based on WL. People who work at WL should be called Wine Librarians. We are VAYNIACS. End of discussion

GV – GOL’s Girl and I would be more than happy to get involved and host or do whatever necessary to set up the Chitown WLTV party. Douglas, happy to work with you on it, whatever GV thinks.

QOD – Someone suggested Pillar Box. If you only have ‘05 don’t waste your time, but ‘04 was special at the price.
QOD (take 2) – Melville Estate Chardonnay ‘04

Now that would say I dare you to try and kick my ass.

Gary – I told you I would probably post a comment at one o’clock in the morning. Great super tasting, both for the wine and the food. And the Manor was a great venue for it. Thanks for putting it together.

As for a wine to taste, it’s one that I requested previously, the 2002 Nino Negri Sfursat 5 Stelle.

BTW, I was somewhat suprised not to see the Kenwood Chardonnay at the tasting, considering it was “very special” to you. As bad as the 2005 may have been (a la episode 100) it would have nice to raise a glass of it with you at the tasting.

By the way, I’m certainly not knocking employees of WL. But Wine Librarian(s) seems like an appropriate name for someone who works at WL, you know, like when you used to go the library and ask them to help you find a book. A Wine Librarian helps you find the wine. We who are addicted to WLTV and GV’s antics are VAYNIACS.

I have to agree with PeteB…Good call on the Larkmead ( I just got back from tasting there…nice)

Jaye…Nice low dollar call on the Cheeky Chick Peeper’s Blend Red 2004, I purchased a few bottles from WL to round off a case and I have been very pleased with it. I gave it an 88 on Cellar Tracker. 88 is not too bad for a sub $10 wine in my book. My girl liked it better than I. I like it with Mellow Mushroom Pizza.

ORTIZ 2:23 in the FIRST round!!!! Hell yeah!!!! BrandonM…I know you were watching that!

Tony S…d’Arenburg Dead Arm Shiraz both years are quality. 2000 seems to be ready to drink now while the 2001 might need a couple more years before it reaches its true potential. I give them both 91 points.

GaryV…Just let me know when the WLTV parties are and I am going to try and get to all three!!!

My number one vote for a tasting tomorrow is…
Larkmead Napa Cabernet Sauvignon 2003 #7734

Also what about the restaurant tour next year? If you are still interested in Atlanta, I have you covered!

Wow…as for the T-shirt and what we call ourselves…if it really is that important to you then go and get your own shirt made that says what you want to be called and when you show up for the WLTV party (if you are truly a WLTV-aholic) then everyone there will already know what you are talking about. People on the streets will not understand what your shirt means until WLTV goes prime time. And by then…DID YOU SEE ORTIZ BEAT SHAMROCK!!!

    For All…

To be personally honest, I don’t think Wine Librarians is the best fit and I think Vaniacs is a slogan / shirt I would rather wear. I hope you all realize that I put the web site up, let it run, and then pulled out any erroneous email adrreses that were in the DB (ie…president@whitehouse.gov, President Bush…if this was you I apologize, vote again under your private email!…also smiley faces and one word email addresses)

Someone REALLY wanted Vaniacs and voted over 100 times with email addresses like vaniac@aol.com, vaniac1@aol.com, vaniac2@aol.com..etc, etc, etc….
This is why the numbers changed so drastically on the last day.

I even emailed Gary today to see what his reaction may be.
This is not something he may want to get involved with, but I have asked his opinion just in case.

Some of you have submitted design ideas on Wine Librarians, and to be honest with the BLOG, IT is something I would be happy wearing, but Vaniacs still rings much better to me.

I would ask Gary if it is OK to Vote on the BLOG and then I will Tally the answers by userName….you could only vote on either Wine Librarian or Vaniacs since they were overwhelmingly voted on, and the vote tally would show up on http://www.Vayernvote.com

    Anybody…any thoughts????

and oh ya….San Francisco BABY…I will do anything in my power to make this a memory we will ALL remember, so even if I do not coordinate, you will be glad you came, or, if you don’t come, you will be sorry you missed.

One more thing….I WILL be coming to New York for the East Coast party, so, I expect it to be as good as SF.

I’ll go back a few episodes and suggest you taste Leon Beyer Comtes de Eguisheim.* I returned from a trip to Alsace to find you had tasted Alsace wines on the day I was on the plane over the ocean. It was also terrific to see that WL carried this Beyer, which is a top cuvee from the Eichberg Grand Cru vineyard. I spent several days tasting, eating and drinking in and around the gorgeous village of Eguisheim (where everyone seems to be making wine in their 16th century garage–I’d be happy to share photos), and this wine was the most amazing Riesling revelation. The flavor is of a bottle of rocks and earth covered with flowers and white fruit that just fell off the tree. Best wine ever with wild mushroom soup or the beautiful fish ravioli in saffron broth at the Caveau d’Eguisheim. Anyone who tries a dry Alsatian Grand Cru Riesling at least once will see many assumptions about this grape fall away.

*News flash–it looks like I may have bought you out of this wine, unless someone made a mistake. I was told that the Beyer Pinot Noir was sold out, but it is still on the site, and instead the Comtes is gone.

Regarding the VaynerVOTE on the VaynerNAME,

Since I was the one who nominated VaynIACS, I thought it improper to comment first, but now that it is once again in play, I will add my 2 cents.

I agree with Tony and GOL that calling ourselves Wine Librarians is wrong for a # of reasons: #1-it possesses a degree of Wine Snobbery which is the opposite of WLTV (btw, calling the store “Wine Library” is different and not snobby, but calling ourselves “Wine Librarians” is); #2-some people seem to have forgotten that this all started w/ the VaynerNOD and VaynerChuck and VaynerCLANK, etc. etc. etc. Hence, any VaynerNAME is far superior. BTW, it doesn’t have to be VanIACS….VaynerNATION (my personal favorite), VaynerPEEPS, VaynerANYTHING are all better just because they have the Vayner prefix.

Finally, I do feel compelled to defend VaynIACS….and not because it lost the vote, but rather because VaynIACS was really the only name that experienced an actual Negative AD campaign. Most everyone either nominated a name OR simply commented on what their favorite(s) was (were). On the other hand, BIG BILLY left a bunch of comments attacking it. This seemed improper to me…why not just let people vote. Moreover, in BIG BILLY’s attack ads, he repeatedly used an inaccurate and very negative definition of Maniac calling it “latent tendencies of sociopath”. The “Merriam-Webster’s Pocket Dictionary” provides these 2 definitions for Mania (the root word): 1: insanity marked by uncontrollable emotion or excitement 2: excessive enthusiasm. I would say that the 2 definition of “excessive enthusiasm” is the meaning that I and, I believe most VaynIACS are connecting with. Although some of us feel slightly insane regarding our mini-addiction to WLTV. But either of the accurate definitions is better than what BIG BILLY says….he made sound like we were John Wayne Gacey or Ted Bundy for goodness sake’s.

Also, one final note that I cannot resist— based on the number of comments that have used VaynIACS versus Wine Librarians, I must admit that something seems fishy. And I’m not blaming Brandon M. in anyway, but it seems like somebody found a way to stuff the ballot box.

BIG BILLY….is your last name Rove by any chance….or maybe you’re Derek using a different BLOG NAME. lol

P.S. For those of you who don’t know…this over-the-top, overanalyzed email is half a joke…..it’s a semi “maniacal” response that supports VaynIAC!!! To all, I say….decant & drink.

MikeMe: I echo your request for the Provenance Cab. I went there when I was in Napa because it was recommended by our pourer at Whitehall Lane. QOTD: I’ve been drinking a lot of Long Island wines recently. About the only LI wine I could find on the site is Bedell’s ‘01 Merlot. Can you taste that?
Any chance that you could add New York under the “Type:” drop down box on winelibrary.com? It seems like NY wines are gaining popularity, but as far as I can tell there is no good way to search for them on winelibrary.com.

I’d be willing to throw my hat in to be an event coordinator for the NYC WLTV Party. I’ve planned many large bar parties for friends, so this is right up my alley. Since I work in Manhattan and live in Jersey City, I’m always out in NYC.

    Gary,
Thanks for tasting red Burgundies. Next time could you bring something less expensive?
It appears that red Burgundy prices range from $14 for generic Bourgogne to $70 for premier cru (I am not talking about very expensive stuff here). There must be some sweet spot at around $20-25?

QOTD: Please taste whatever you have from Ferrari Carano-whites and reds. Their cab, Sienna, fume blanc etc.

    OK…here is an idea.
Everyone that thinks they have what it takes should come up with a t-shirt design with what ever VaynerName they are, then we can all have a demo or a few demo shirts made on our own and we can show them off at the parties. Then if we have a few we can trade them and share our stories with each other at the parties kind of like trading your jersey with your opponent after a soccer game. That would make all of us do a little work and take the shirt design and upfront cost off of BrandonM. It is great that he is willing to do the work but we should contribute.
Then after the parties we will have pictures of shirts and stories to go with them. We can then try another vote to decide which shirt we would all like to have and sport on the streets. Because no matter how cool the VaynerName might end up being, the shirt might end up looking like (and maybe smelling like) crap and only wine should SMELL like crap ;)
BTW…I am going to do this no matter what and I will have shirts of my own come party time!!! I look forward to trading a shirt or two with some other people as well.

Again, I am a VayneOPHILE on my own no matter what our great community ends up being!

I agree that the sudden jump in Wine Librarian votes is suspicious. I think we may have had two people stuffing the ballot box – one (not so smart) for Vayniacs, and another (smarter, using real-looking email addresses) for Wine Librarians.

Brandon, you didn’t happen to capture the IP address of each voter did you? That might simplify the process of determining which votes are ballot stuffers.

Obviously, I’m glad you finally got around to doing the Burg episode. I do however, have some seious nits to pick. To all of you out there, do not buy any of the wines on this episode. First of all, aside from the 2000, they are from a freakish year that gives a completely atypical sense of what Burgundy is about. Second of all, they are all pretty mediocre producers (well, Gouges is pretty good, and Magnien can be good on occasion). Third, these wines are badly overpriced. Gary is right. Burgundy is a crap shoot as anyone who has ever tried anything on a whim knows. And the more you spend the more likely you are to get burned. That being said, there is a lot of very mediocre, not to say bad very very very expensive bordeaux, napa valley wine and so forth–and don’t get me started what passes for wine coming out of places like auz. No, if you want to try burgundy, look for, for example, some of the 2002 beaunes coming from Jadot, or something like the 2001 Matrot Blagny which can be found for a song if you look around–wines that will cost you 20-30 bucks. 1999, 2001, 2002, 2004 all have some interesting wines (though the 2004 reds are proving to have some screetchy acidity–the whites are classics) that are worth looking for. But look in santenay, marsanay, beaune, and other smaller appelations. Learn to like to stuff. It will often be very light (not have “great color”) quite high, or very high, in acidity, incredible food wine, and when you get to know it, the kind of elegant thought provoking beverage that Gary speaks of–just not the wines he tried which all sound like syrah in a pinot wrapper. Few burgs tend to have power or color associated with them (though they occasionally do). Perfume, high-toned, terroir, mineral etc those are terms I hope for. Again, delighted it happened, disappointed at the choices and don’t agree with the assessments. Can’t have it all. And as the man says, you have to decide for yourself.

In response to TShirt Voting Comments

Ep “Another Look Back”, Comment 173 by Brandon Opened the voting with the propagation of http://www.vaynervote.com/.

I then voted for Vaynerchucklers and wondered where the nominated names not using the Vayner prefix were. I posted this question. Brandon then within an hour posted that the full list we subsequently used as a ballot was now available.

Ep 100 Comment 39 I posted the ONLY comment before the close of the.vaynervote.com/ website on Sunday where I mentioned Vayniacs. Here it is:

“For those of you who believe your love of wine and WLTV is a matter of Free Will, unending intellectual curiosity, and sensory pleasure I recommend:
    Wine Librarians

For those who believe that their condition may be more described in faux medical terms I recommend:
    Biblio-OenoPhiliacs (also known as BOP)
those Wine Librarians so infected should be known as BOPPERS. (BOP PERSons)
For those who believe that their relationship with WLTV should be described in the Journal of Psychiatry I recommend:
    Vayniacs
I wonder if it is a crippling disorder?

Foe those who believe only in unquestioned authority figures, and wish to prostrate themselves in that servitude I recommend:
    VaynerNation”

For the remainder of the election period I posted a few comments with each succeeding episode, all containing the hyperlink to the polling site, quippish comments in support of Wine Librarians or Terroirists all in the spirit of fun. I openly admitted in one comment about the voting process, when Brandon brought up the issue of bogus emails, that I had invited some friends and family to support my choices and check out WLTV. I know we picked up a few new viewers as a result. Brandon quite satisfactorily explained the nature of the bogus email addresses.

With the sending of my Email to family and friends I only hoped to get Wine Librarians and Terroirists in the Top 5. At that point Vayniacs was running well ahead. I didn’t send another Email to gain more support, and was happy to let the electoral chips fall where they willed.

The big influx of votes came on Saturday afternoon.

All the “sociopath” stuff came two days after the balloting ended, in response to Vayniac-whining about Wine Librarians not being belligerently aggressive enough name. I guess out of a fear that someone in a biker bar would attack a Wine Librarians shirt wearer ordering Opus One because they would be perceived as weak. My advice – don’t wear a Wine Librarian shirt, or order Opus One in a biker bar.

The possibility does exist that Wine Librarians is the electoral choice of people who come without commenting to WLTV for information about wine, coupled with the convenience of having the wine actually available for sale at a competitive price. Not because GV antics about the Jets or the Yankees, or blood sport banter. Instead they just tolerate that stuff to get at the wine information. Maybe what happened in this election was that rationality prevailed.

Most of the use of Vayniac came from than a dozen or so people using it constantly. That strikes me as the more Rovian approach – an endless calliope of echo chamber effect talking points from one source. Repetition is one mark of “The Big Lie.”

Chris, my name is not Rove, but my middle name is “Yellow Dog”, if you know what that means. That’s not the easy way in Texas today.

I did not stuff the ballot box, and furthermore I wouldn’t have if I could have. I am only involved here because I wanted to be entertained and informed, while trying at times to be entertaining with my comments. In fact, when it looked like Wine Librarians was going to lose I researched the horses that ran behind Secretariat in the 1973 Belmont – 31 lengths behind. If Wine Librarians had lost I wouldn’t have whined. I am not that invested.

    Be of good cheer

I would like to ask the BLOG about Vaniacs…
It seems to me that most who actually puts time into posting likes Vaniacs, and it did recieve a TON of legitimate votes. I’m doing shirts no matter what the only question now is Vaniacs or Wine Librarians, and I think I know the answer.

MarcT…haven’t found it yet, still looking.
Also a great idea on the shirts. I think that it would be cool if we traded and everyone had their own designs. If we all see one we like, we could make it the official shirt.

Tony…No I.P. Addresses were captured. I guess I thought I wouldn’t need to, stupid me!

Last night….eleventh hour. I need to get out of a rut. I think I am going to start buying only two bottles of each wine so that I can constantly experience different tastes. The Eleventh Hour is REALLY REALLY good, but it is the same this week as it was last week, so I’m thinking about buying one to two bottles at a time.

I, again, have had a local store tell me that you should always buy by the case for the aging potential, having enough to enjoy, and getting the case discounts, but I REALLY don’t see the need anymore….besides…I am officially out of room!

To the defense of Big Billy in Big D….

I have gone through the DB with a fine tooth comb, and the votes for Wine Librarians look pretty legitimate. They are not all AOL, HOTMAIL, and the like. They are actually from private companies, public companies, government sites, and private home sites as well. I can email all of them and ask for a response, but I think that violates the “Email only for voting” rule. I CANNOT stand spam and do not want to become a part of it.

    Here’s what I’ll do….TWO SHIRTS….that should solve it…Wine Librarians Vs. Vaniacs…hell lets have a football game!
Now I have allready recieved some great designs for Wine Librarians, so this tells me there are A LOT of people who REALLY want it….I haven’t recieved any design ideas for vaniacs, not that I’m asking for them, but the wine librarian crowd seems a bit more motivated.

After reading my previous post I realized that I may have alienated all those viewers who don’t neccesarily post. These may be the voters who want Wine Librarians so I do need to take it in to consideration in my decision. Again, as MarcT said, this is my decision for the shirts I am producing, you can certainly make your own if you want, it would be fun to trade!

    Just my three cents!

Kudos on getting Elaine Bracco. She was one of the judges on the finale of the show “Top Chef” and they featured her wines during the competition.

    Questions:

As to today’s episde. Why is there such a delta, in terms of price, between Burgundy and Pinot Noirs from other regions of the world?

Another question. Say your on the run, and not near a wine store. You find a liquor store that has a decent amount of wine in many varietals, but none made by producers you recognize beyond the “training wheel” brands like Turning Leaf, etc. What is your suggestion for finding/picking out a nice bottle of wine when you’re in a pinch?

Last question: What producer, or producers, do you think do the best job producing multiple varietals? You’ve had several vineyards on some of your earlier shows.

Gary, Great episode on Burgundies! Have been waiting a long time to hear about some good Pinot’s. Will give them a try soon. Just one note, when will they be approachable? Keep up the great work Gary….

Holy smokes… cage match! Vayniacs vs wine librarians! $50 a ticket $100 for VIP. This is crazy people, I am sure you could make both t-shirts, couldn’t you? I for one think Vayniacs makes more sense because it reflects on the host of the show. Like for fans of Bob Barker (price is right) you wouldn’t name is fan club the price is righters…you would have something involving his name to show that you support what he is doing.

Though wine librarians does come off snobby, I would still wear the shirt. Mainly because people would ask what it is about and I could direct them to our wonderful obsession. Regardless we need to remember that this is about fun right? As long as people are paying for the shirts what difference does it make what it says on the front/back

Oh well, Gary you have your hands full.

Here is a question for all of you.

Recently I purchased a $30 bottle of wine and a $10 bottle of wine for bbq that I was attending with some great friends. They were both Cabs and we were looking to see which one we like better. The most frustrating thing in the world was after decanting them for about 2 hours the $10 bottle tasted like a champ while the $30 bottle was more suited for watering the plants. So here is my question to all of you Vayniacs/wine librarians. Have you ever had a situation like this that you were so disappointed that you were turned of from the $30 bottle’s maker for quite some time? I don’t know if I will be purchasing from them for awhile…however like gary says…it might have been the bottle.

    Drink on!

    Gary,

I loved the episode. They are the most serious wines on the planet. Yes they are an expensive crap shoot, but like you said they’re worth every penny when you hit a great one.

I like Tony S. would pick Burgundy as well if I had to be stuck with one area for the rest of my life.

Also, did I see Big John Studd on the table in episode 100? I Iron Sheik and Hillbilly Jim were there.

    Bear Down….5 and Oh yeah!

Marc T (comment 85)…thanks for the info on the 2000 and 2001 Dead Arm. I haven’t had a chance to go into my storage and check which bottle I have. Either way, Gary, you don’t need to try that, not that you would pick that out of these billions of great suggestions.

Great…if I have the 2000, I’ll bring that home the next time I’m having an Aussie Shiraz style of dinner, and if it’s the 01, I’ll just forget about it for a little longer.

    Thank Marc.

Hilarious WLTV Spoof!!!!!! You and I even made the questions of the day!! I just about died laughing. Nice VaynerNod and VaynerClank too! I kind of wish he had gagged on Two Buck Chuck, but that was a riot!

Gary, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. You’ve made the big time!

Of course it’s me. I really wanted to get a black hairpiece before doing it to make it look a little more accurate but in the end I was too lazy. I also had planned on doing this for the time between the 99th and 100th episode but never got around to it.

    Gary V,

If you’re going to mention les Santenots, you should’ve told them the reason why the vineyard is regarded as Volnay and not Meursault, is that by law Meursault can only produce white wine. Another idiosyncracy of Burgundy is that the 80 owners Clos de Vougeot are splitting roughly 75 ha of vineyard. Man, I love that region.

    Gary:

You get called “the Ryan Seacrest of Wine”, and you’re not sure if it’s a good thing!? Of COURSE it’s not a good thing! If it makes you feel any better, Gary, I’ve always considered you kind of “the Brian Dunkleman of Wine.”

Great show. An experience at La Tour D’argent with a 20 year old Nuit St. George burg is what really launched my wine journey. It was transcendental. I’m still chasing the dragon.

The idea of eggs on the nose of a wine makes me want to gag. Is that really the essence of Burgundy?

In 1939 Henri Gouges discovered some of his Pinot noir vines were producing white grapes. Instead of destroying this aberration, he propogated it and to this day his sons produce miniscule amounts (120 cases) of white Pinot noir. As a budding enthusiast, you owe it to yourself to taste a bottle of this rare and unique wine.

A taste point i haven’t heard you use, but i’m curious if you’ve detected before. i’m drinking a burgundy now — Joseph Drouhin, Vero, Pinot Noir 2006. i’m no expert but from hearing you talk, i thought i tasted the things you usually mention when you say a wine should age more — acid was a little prominent, fruit was more underlying. it was pure silk tho and tannins were very subtle, only 12.5 alcohol. BUT! the thing i want to ask you is… have you smelled a banana note in a pinot? or in wine in general? i swear on the Vero’s nose i got strawberry-banana yogurt once the oak faded.

qotd: I know that episode has passed, but would love to see you do an episode on tasting different charbono’s, and one on vin jaune’s in the future Gary.
