according to cellartracker this morning 899 bottles in the cellar –

about 400 futures – most of those are 2005 Bordeaux. I blame Gary for that.

Gary – when I was at the Tuesday night tasting, I noticed that in one of the rooms downstairs there were a few birds in a large cage. Did you bring them?

  • Great Show. As for bottles I have 48 or 50. They are from everywhere. But I have really been enjoying a Malbec from Argentiana.
Great taste and has a little bit of mocha at the end.

  • Great episode as usual…unfortunately, I’m running late and haven’t had a chance to look at other people’s responses…but, as for me and the QOD, I’ve got about 40 or so bottles. The sad thing is about a third or so of those are things I have no urge to try. Like a 95 Minervois, Domaine Borie de Maurel. I had 2 of these bottles that I picked up on clearance for about 5$, and the first one tasted like bad olives. I doubt I’ll ever be in the mood for a wine that tastes like bad olives again, so that’s probably going to sit here and get worse and worse.

But I do have some gems that I’m saving. Since I work at a wine place that carries a wide variety of wines from every place and vintage, I usually just pick up something when I need it. I don’t really care about “collecting” wines and I’m not a business man, so I don’t care about buying boatloads of futures for the sake of selling it for a profit later. I just enjoy a bottle of great wine. So I stock up on some affordable stuff, and buy a some nicer bottles here and there when I need them.

Hey Gary: I see the Jets are favored by 2 and half over the Dolphins. I’m picking the Jets in my pool, so they better win by a field goal or more buddy, or it’s on YOU. I feel safe picking my Bears over the Cardinals by 10 and half. OK, see you later,

    GO BEARS!!!

Great show. I wish I could have traveled up for the tasting. I am surprised you did not mention South America or Languedoc for QPR. I’ve had some very nice wines at single digit prices from Chile. Also, the Minervois area of France is producing some dynamite QPR.

QOD: Roughly 500 bottles with more in the pipeline. I’m exceeding the capacity of three wine fridges, and had to rig a makeshift cooler in a closet this summer for the wines to be opened in the next 3 years. Luckily, now the north corner of the garage will stay at about 55 degrees for the winter.

Nicest wine you never heard of: Paul Schneider Pinot Gris from Alsace. Beautiful, rich but citrusy Pinot Gris from grand cru vineyards near Colmar. I tried it from the hotel minibar in Eguishem (less than 10 Euro even at minibar markup), then went down the street to the winery. It is also a popular house wine for Alsatian restaurants in the area.

Great show Gary. I have about 150 bottles, 90% reds. About 2 cases are for everyday drinking. The rest I am holding. Mostly California Cabs, a few Italians, a few Spanish, very few French. My wife has been on a Savignon Blanc binge lately so lots of New Zealand, South Africa, Australia, Loire even Rias Baixas. Thanks.

How many bottles of wine do I have. Let me say I invested in a Vino-Temp Wine Room.
900 bottle capacity, and it’s almost full. My guess is that I have 750 to 800 bottles.
Many from Wine Library I might add! Stop over and see me. The range from 1982 Bordeaux
to “sluggers”…you know, bottles under 10 bones.
    Thanks for WLTV…I love it!

I have about 400 bottles or so. I keep them in the basement along a back wall – dark, reasonably constant temperature, but I’m going to build a storage room next summer. They’re a mix – everything from 1963 Port to recent Argentinean Malbec. Some seem to vanish (I forget about them) and others don’t stay in the cellar long. I should keep better track of what I have, but it’s fun to discover one I’d forgotten about.
Karen (#54), like Jaye, I started a while ago when I was in college and just bought a few more than I drank, just to see what would happen. After a few years, the cellar builds up. Then you buy a few to put away and, soon, there’s a real cellar. Some of it gets too old, but then you get watch the full life cycle of a wine.

QOD…about 650 with some remaining 03 & of course 05 bordeaux. We finsihed our basement a few years ago and I built a wine room with redwood racking & a temp control unit…so far it has worked perfectly (touch wood). I favor bordeaux but I have accumulated the better vintages of California and Washington. Fun stuff….

    Gary,
QOD- Just over 1500 with nothing costing over $150 and most between $20-$60. I also have 200 gallons of home made wine in Barrels. Most of the wines we have we have gotten on our trips to Sonomoa & Napa that are wines at the time did not get distributed to New Jersey.

On the wine opener front – Buy the Brand SCREWPULL it is the only brand to get, we have opened thousands of bottles with ours without fail- Family members have the knock offs like Rabbit and others and they always have problems.

Good lord Growing Pains? Kirk Cameron- Did they only have one TV station at Band Camp?

  • Had 350 until today when I got 2 cases one from Elyse and one from Turley so I guess 375 or so now. 200 are reds. 100 whites and the rest are champagnes, ports and other dessert wines. Great episode. Will have to get the Casin Marin if it is still available. Would have loved to go the the Super Tasting but just went to one at the end of September in Santa Fe. I still would love to get to your store but it is a 6 hour drive from here. One question, why were there so many coats and ties at the Super Tasting?

Just wandered over and was checking out Wine Library TV for the first time. Watched a handful of episodes. Gary, have to say great idea put to excellent use and done with good style and attitude. Good for your customers and good for your store. I’m surprised there aren’t lots of people doing this to personalize the otherwise very impersonal business of selling wine over the internet (or so many other things over the internet for that matter, particularly in the growing “YouTube” age).

Well to answer your question….around 7,500 bottles either in the cellar or on their way, across perhaps 2,000 different wines/labels/vintages, from $10 bottles made from varietals I’ve never heard of from central Italy that sounded interesting to tried and true 1st growth Bordeaux. Clearly curiousity and passion mixed with obsession. With so many great wines out there why buy fewer different wines by the case instead of a broader selection to learn and explore?

Have about 40 bottles currently. Apartment living isn’t conducive to a larger collection — have about 30 that fit in my wine fridge and about 10 or so “everyday” wines that live in the bar closet.

BTW, the clips from the Supertasting — not that exciting. Just lots of people milling around — didn’t need the 3 minutes or so in my WLTV. Did enjoy the Italian Stalion intro, though…

Let’s Go Mets! I think Beltran’s HR just landed — that ball was CRUSHED!

QOD…We have aprox. 860 bottles in our cellar. We were very lucky when we were building our house in 2000. The builder was a small local builder. He knew I was into wine and he offered to build a wine room for me.He told me to get the plans, whitch i did (free off the internet),and to get the measurments for framing out the cooling unit. The charge was $200 for the exterior insulated door and $200 for the extra electrical circuit for the cooling unit and recessed lights.Right now I have racking for 1000 btls but can add more racking to bring the capacity to about 1200-1400 btls. The main problem is according to my software I have to buy at least 20 casses per yr. to keep the number at 800 – 900 bottles.I guess I’ll just have to hit lotto to get more…LOL.
Great show and as usual a wonderful tasting…keep up the good work…D

    Gary,

    This is very personal question.

I have more than I care to admit and less than I really want.

I made a conscious decision at some point not to collect anything.

I was very tempted to collect guitars, fire arms, knives, books, wine, espresso cups, digital cameras and their accessories, etc.
    Just say NO.

    Gary,
How about a little experiment on the show. Letâ??s make a kitchen blend. Say we blend Merlot, Cabernet sauvignon and frank right here in front of the camera. Would it taste like Bordeaux?

Or say you taste some Rosenblum and it stinks. Well, pull a bottle or two of something according to your taste and fix it right there!

Falesco Vitiano lacking fruit? Add some Spanish fruit bomb and here we go, itâ??s pretty good now!

Personally I like my Chewbaca to soak overnight in brine, The remove the Chewy from the brine and pat dry. Then take honey mustard and cover Chewy completely- In a bowl combine brown sugar, onion powder, garlis powder, a pinch of cyan, paprika and chili powder. Now rub the dry ingrediants onto the Chewy the Musatrd helps it stick.

Take thick cut bacon and cover the Chewbaca in it. Place the Chewy in a smoker for 6 to 8 hours with pecan wood. Remove the Chewy and place in a roasting pan and add 2 cups of pure Apple juice and 1/2 cup of orange juice- Cover in tinfoil and place in a 200 degree oven for 6 hours.

Remove the Chewbaca wrap it in tinfoil, then in two towels and place in an empty cooler. After two hours remove the chewbaca and you can carve it or take two forks and shred the meat.

Place shredded Chewbaca on a roll with a little coleslaw.

I would match a nice 1999 Edgewood Malbec or Foppiano Petite Syra

    Rich S,
I have family in the Finger Lakes area that I visit every year. We’ve been going on the wine tasting tour for 6 years now. Some of my favorite Finger Lakes wineries include:
    Dr. FrankKonstantin – excellent riesling
Heron Hill – very good dry riesling
Hermann J. Wiemer – all very good, $$ to taste
Miles Wine Cellars has an excellent view right on the lake, $ to taste but you keep the glass
Fox Run – excellent dry riesling & gewurztraminer, good food as well
Glenora – loved all of the wines and the views
Standing Stone Vineyards – outstanding vidal ice wine!!!!!! Other food goodies too!!
Lamoreaux Landing – delicious pinot noir & cab. franc
Wagner – interesting beer & free popcorn, always crowded
Atwater Estates – had an interesting riesling/gewurztraminer blend called rewurtz. Not bad.
Earle Estates Meadery – If you’ve never had meade, this is the place to try it. I think I had at least 6 or 8 very good ones.
Fulkerson’s Winery – good wine, plus, you can buy the juice to make your own:-)
Cayuga Ridge Estate Winery – they make cranberry essence and frost wines that are delicious!
Frontenac Point Vineyard – the locals like this place.
Lakeshore Winery – this palce does a nice wine and food tasting with food.
Hope I helped! I may have missed some (since we never spit unless the wine is absolute swill) and we’re half in the bag by 1 or 2 o’clock. Have fun exploring & discovering the region. It’s beautiful this time of year! BTW I’ll be up there this coming weekend.
QOD – 60 bottles crammed in a 52 bottle unit plus 6 or 7 (maybe 8) assorted cases floating around. Lots of 2000 & ’01 Bordeauxes, Cote Du Rhones, Crozes Hermitage, Gigondas, Chat De P’s, Burgundies, Cabs, Zins, Rieslings, Sav. Blancs, and Sancerres.
    Sue Z.

How about some more info about you? Are you married? Kids?

    Take care,

    Bruce
