qotd: there are many whether sports or whatever. Usually the retirement is due to their age. So to leave early, and unexpectedly, and at the top of your game, holds the biggest impact on me. I’m talking retirement though, not death or being forced to, just voluntary. So for me, it would be Bill Watterson. He was author of Calvin and Hobbes. The strip only ran 10 years. I’m not a comic strip guy really, but he was in a league all his own.
With that in mind, before you retire from WLTV Gary, how about giving us a vin jaune episode, and 1 on tasting the few (13-18) California charbono’s out there?

Just ordered from free.winelibary.com. Cabernet Franc (one of my favorite grapes right now along w/ Mourvedre), $34, free shipping, I couldn’t resist! The one thing I’ve observed though is sometimes a $40 california cab franc tastes to me like a $15 Bourgeuil. Thoughts?

QOD: I did not see it live, but on a documental, Joe Dimaggio.

Gary..I forgot to say props for talking about Curtis Martin. He quietly became the 4th greatest rusher of all time. He definitely deserves more love.

Great job Gary. Keep up the excellent work. My wine purchases now seem to mirror your WL TV reviews! You have helped me find some great “school night wines”.

    Gary-
Thanks for answering my question! Loved the format today.
I was in the store today to pick up a couple of bottles. I was going to say hi, but apparently you were in a meeting. next time.
QOD: Michael Jordan the first time. I was devestated. Good thing his baseballe career didn’t go so well.
    Have a great weekend!

Larry Bird, Michael Jordan (the first time), and Magic Johnson (HIV). I don’t even watch basketball anymore! Oh, and Don Mattingly…

QOD: I hated to see Johnny Carson leave the show. It was worth staying up late for.

Thanks, Gary for making me one of your “answerees”. I am truly humbled. ;)

Congrats to Michael, Stallion and Tampa Steve. Way to go!! Let us know how many cases you all ordered by December 31.

I was just watching some old WLTV episodes, and I saw you saying something about “if the Jets loose we’ll ship to you for free”. Well, I don’t live in Cleveland but since the only Ohio team you’ll face before the postseason is the Browns….Anyway, to cut a long story short, how about reaching out to all us College Football Veyniacs. Its not easy to support the wine habit on an academic’s salary! The retirement question kind of gets flipped around in college football where most of the time you wonder if a coach is ever going to retire.

Was that free shipping for a ‘full’ year or till the ‘end’ of this year? Way to go guys!

QOD-Bo Jackson….he could of been the greatest.

Am a huge fan of all the Spring Mountain (Napa) wines you refer to. Pride, Togni, Barnett, Terra Valentine, Paloma. Would make a great episode.

I guess I will show my age, but one of the most touching and sad retirements for me was Johnny Carson! Was really the end of an era and generation and his final show was very sad….

Congrats to TS, Stallion and Michael on the free shipping.

GV – you still offering free shipping the city of the team that beats the Jets? I hope so as I can not wait until the Jets/Bears game!!!

BTW – think it is very cool how close you seem with your parents and how many things they did as a kid has stayed with you and made you who you are today!!

Sorry I missed out on your contest. [traveling] For the people I hate to see retire….I’ll go the mentor groups over the famous people. [pastors, teachers, doctors, ect] for me it was a middle school principal. It was sad that future generations would not get the benifit of being mentored by such a incredible person. He had the ablity and education to make 5-10 times the money he did but, his passion was education. I know he would prefer for his name not to be mentioned….he was very popular and worked within a state [Florida] with one of the worst educations systems in the country. I say at the end of the school year we tip our glasses to the great teachers in our country.

Nice episode, and thanks for answering all those questions. I think TampaSteve should get free shipping for the creativity alone. I cracked up as I read through his family entreating you for free shipping. Classic. Enjoy Michael, Stallion and Tampa. Good work.

    Hi Gary,
Question for you. What has tasting all that wine done to your teeth? Isn’t the acid very bad for enamel? Does it matter? This question pops into my head every time I hear how much wine you taste a day.
I was very sad the day Jerry Jones (scumbag) forced Tom Landry into retirement. That was the day I quit being a Cowboy fan FOREVER!!

Enjoy this episode, lots of energy.

Brandon M asked (post #1) when are we going to see off camera stuff. I think this is great, however tasting a wine with the winemaker hasn’t really worked in the past… What can you say if it’s a pass “This wine is very interesting…… very interesting…. ok next one”. It’s a bit hard to destroy a wine when sitting next to the winemaker who has put his heart blood into it. But excepts / intros etc are always fun.

I would like to see some blind tasting with black glasses where you don’t know if its red or white. Some of your employees need to put some thought into choosing some reds and whites to make you think.

When I think of someone that i felt really heartbroken when they retired, I could only think of one person. I could go with a baseball player (big mets fan) or a football player (jets) or a band (Perhaps Moxy Fruvious)…. However that is only mildly dissapointing.. I would pick someone that I grew up with. Experienced more than 5-10 years of their carreer..

That would be Bob Murphy. I grew up with his voice as the mets announcer for as long as I can remember. When his vocals left the air there was a void.. They should name the new stadium after him and Ralph Kiner..

I’ve been lurking long enough (since the Wall Street Journal article) and finally decided to post to show my appreciation for all of your hard work Gary. Seventeen questions today… wow. Your passion for wine is contagious and I have definitely caught the bug…

I guess I didn’t realize how much I had learned from watching WLTV until I came face to face with a really crappy wine selection at a liquor store on the way to dinner at my girlfriend’s parents. When faced with a wall of Yellow Tail and Franzia in a box, I was able to pick out the Las Rocas hiding out on the bottom shelf. Needless to say it was a big hit (and only $7) so I owe you big time GaryV!

As far as the QOD: I grew up in the Bay Area as a 49er fan so my heroes never really retired… they were just sent off to pasture… Montana to the Chiefs, Rice to the Raiders, and Ronnie Lott to your Jets. I think #28 has hall of fame numbers, but it will take a few years before the voters really appreciate all that he has accomplished… HOF class of 2015.

Question: I’ll be turning the big 30 in a couple of months and was wondering what wine you celebrated your 30th with? I’m thinking a birth year wine would be nice, but 1977 doesn’t seem like a strong vintage, I’m struggling to find anything beside a port from that year. Any suggestions?

    Keep up the great work!
