I was shocked that Barry Sanders retired. He would have easily broken the all time rushing record. Which is shocking that he would have done it on a horrible Lions team.

I cried when Tiki Barber retired, err, umm, ….
Actually, when Brett Farve, uh, hold on.
Rocky Balboa, yeah, when the last Rocky movie, or next to last, or …
How ’bout Morten Anderson. Definitely. The Great Dane. That guy could, um, I mean can still-
Maybe, thinking back, when Herschel Walker retired, I mean, “left” Georgia for the USFL- wait, he wanted to return, but talked with an agent, so…
    Nevermind.

  • Gary,

So glad to see you back and hyped! Awesome energy and episode. After sitting through the rerun ep yesterday, I was feeling down.

    Questions:

What were those two Star Wars figures? Do you remember which ones they were? And do you still have them or did you keep them in their package so you could flip them for a huge profit? 😉

Has there ever been a wine you wanted to secure for WL that you were unable to acquire an allotment of?

Dayum, I was born in 1953 as well… so I’m old enough to be your Dad!!!!!?? QOD- Archie Manning – the guy was very talented and stuck on arguably the worst managed/owned professional sports team: Da Saints. I’m glad they are off to a good start, but they’ll fold. Archie could have outplayed both sons; sad he never had the support and got beaten up for trying.

    Hey Y’all,
Anyone else not able to get on the site yesterday; I mean at all. I couldn’t even read the terroir blog. I demand reparations for my having missed the contest; my internet worked just fine and I tried other terminals around campus. What’s the deal?

Anywho…Gary you oughta do a Malbec episode! I bought my first Argentine bottle recently and cannot stop thinking about it. I thought that it was young, but that could have been due to my only letting it breathe for about an hour ( or the huge fight my gf and I had that night.) Go figure. I keep wondering what it would be like decanted or even after a few years; it cost me a good 18 bucks here in the city. Would’ve probably cost me much less buying from your store, but I have no choice. I’m impatient and hardly have any dough so I’m like a fiend when I can afford a bottle of the stuff.

    I guess I’m ranting. See y’all lata.

    Holla back.

P.s. I am trying to figure out my avatar and so haven’t…wow I’ve got it…I think. See y’all on the boards!

Clint Black…AWESOME that your wife bought that guitar wine rack! I was tempted when I was at WL, but I spent the money on wine instead!

Gary, an absolutely amazing episode AGAIN. Your energy and enthusiasm are paled only by your sincerity. Thanks!!! (…and thanks for answering my question!!)

QOD: Diego Maradona…he had an amazing spirit for the game; and Pele…well, because he was Pele.

I cant stay quiet anymore. The Browns beat the Jets. The Buckeyes are number 1. I am happy and I have 14 cases from WL. I’ve been on board for awhile, I love the recommendations. Even though I occasionally disagree with Gary, I highly regard his opinion and his help. Well I said it, now I can go back to Lurking and Tasting.

    Gary,
Great episode! Can’t wait to try the Vinoce. We were sorry to hear the news on Curtis Martin. As you know, he is a Pittsburgh success story, being from the Burgh. So in his honor, how about some free shipping for all the Vayniacs in Pittsburgh?

    Gary,
Out with the Old in with the new- Is he the last of the Fink Parcells boys on the Jets? If so maybe that will finally rid the Jets of the Demons- What was Belichecks record as Jets Head coach- Never mind even he retired after 1 day

Gary thanks for your generosity. And to all my friends!

    Congrats to Stallion & TampaSteve.

QOD: Dennis Byrd. Wasn’t your traditional retirement. He suffered that horrific injury.

Oh, by the way Gary…very classy move giving free shipping to the top 3 guys. Nice!

Question…back during baseball season….you guys were advertising on 880 AM during Yankee games…you were offering a free shipping code. Did you get more orders from your Yankee ads or from the free shipping you gave out when the Jets beat Miami? Just wondering.

    Andre: see episode 59!

(Still waiting for WLTV to break the Cahors barrier though. Maybe late at night on WLTV2?)

Anyway, here’s to Curtis and Tiki going out together and opening up a nice restaurant or something.

Iâ??ve been lurking long enough (since the Wall Street Journal article) and finally decided to post to show my appreciation for all of your hard work Gary. Seventeen questions todayâ?¦ wow. Your passion for wine is contagious and I have definitely caught the bugâ?¦

I guess I didnâ??t realize how much I had learned from watching WLTV until I came face to face with a really crappy wine selection at a liquor store on the way to dinner at my girlfriendâ??s parents. When faced with a wall of Yellow Tail and Franzia in a box, I was able to pick out the Las Rocas hiding out on the bottom shelf. Needless to say it was a big hit (and only $7) so I owe you big time GaryV!

As far as the QOD: I grew up in the Bay Area as a 49er fan so my heroes never really retiredâ?¦ they were just sent off to pastureâ?¦ Montana to the Chiefs, Rice to the Raiders, and Ronnie Lott to your Jets. I think #28 has hall of fame numbers, but it will take a few years before the voters really appreciate all that he has accomplished… HOF class of 2015.

Question: Iâ??ll be turning the big 30 in a couple of months and was wondering what wine you celebrated your 30th with? Iâ??m thinking a birth year wine would be nice, but 1977 doesnâ??t seem like a strong vintage, Iâ??m struggling to find anything beside a port from that year. Any suggestions?

    Keep up the great work!

When I think of someone that i felt really heartbroken when they retired, I could only think of one person. I could go with a baseball player (big mets fan) or a football player (jets) or a band (Perhaps Moxy Fruvious)…. However that is only mildly dissapointing.. I would pick someone that I grew up with. Experienced more than 5-10 years of their carreer..

That would be Bob Murphy. I grew up with his voice as the mets announcer for as long as I can remember. When his vocals left the air there was a void.. They should name the new stadium after him and Ralph Kiner..

  • Enjoy this episode, lots of energy.

Brandon M asked (post #1) when are we going to see off camera stuff. I think this is great, however tasting a wine with the winemaker hasn’t really worked in the past… What can you say if it’s a pass “This wine is very interesting…… very interesting…. ok next one”. It’s a bit hard to destroy a wine when sitting next to the winemaker who has put his heart blood into it. But excepts / intros etc are always fun.

I would like to see some blind tasting with black glasses where you don’t know if its red or white. Some of your employees need to put some thought into choosing some reds and whites to make you think.

    Hi Gary,
Question for you. What has tasting all that wine done to your teeth? Isn’t the acid very bad for enamel? Does it matter? This question pops into my head every time I hear how much wine you taste a day.
I was very sad the day Jerry Jones (scumbag) forced Tom Landry into retirement. That was the day I quit being a Cowboy fan FOREVER!!

Sorry I missed out on your contest. [traveling] For the people I hate to see retire….I’ll go the mentor groups over the famous people. [pastors, teachers, doctors, ect] for me it was a middle school principal. It was sad that future generations would not get the benifit of being mentored by such a incredible person. He had the ablity and education to make 5-10 times the money he did but, his passion was education. I know he would prefer for his name not to be mentioned….he was very popular and worked within a state [Florida] with one of the worst educations systems in the country. I say at the end of the school year we tip our glasses to the great teachers in our country.
