  • Another solid episode…..I think everyone loves the value wines..My favorite value wine is Edge Cabernet…

  • K Spengler

wow, as quick as it was, this sold me very quickly. Quick enough to split a case between the 2! We find those types of reds what we reach for most often during the week, so I’m glad to give these guys a try. Home soon I hope, Liz misses you..oh yeah, us too.

Campbells Rutherglen Tokay – an amazing dessert wine, but all the more so because it’s $10. Thanks for the episode and have a great time in Paris!

Top value wine for me over the past few years are the Marquis Philips reds- the Cabernet, the Shiraz, Sarah’s Blend (WL also has the “Holly’s Blend” which I have not had). Good wine, great value, readily available. The wine I often pick when I need something quick and easy.

  • Value wines are definitely great for everyday drinking. I wish I had the time to make my own wine since you can typically have some quality and get down to $5-9 per bottle depending on varietal.

QOTD – Starry Night Adara @ $12.99 (WL)

    QOTD: Hawks Crest Cab.
Great wine maker offering a value wine, can’t get much better than that.

QOD: Menage a Trois Red is a good weeknight wine, but Calvet Thunevin Cuvee Constance takes the checkered flag for great value in this catagory.

Gary, did your wife join you in Paris????????????????

QOD….best $13 bottle? I would have to go with my recent favorite, the 2004 and 2005 Torbreck Woodcutter’s Red. By far the best value wine out there. Can find both of these wines at the same price and both received great scores from the WA. This may be a stretch…but taking the QPR into consideration, this Torbreck stands with big time Napa Shiraz. You hear that Darioush? Don’t believe me… go ahead and try the 2003 Darioush Shiraz and either vintage of the Torbreck and then see which one you would go back to.

    Gary-
    This is a great one!
Love the part with the table cloth!

QOTD – 2 wines tied for my current fave in the $10-15 range:
2004 Domaine de Laurens Marcillac ($10)
2004 Frederic Mabileau St. Nicolas de Bourgeuil ($14)

Excellent episode – the Trittico sounds like my kind of wine, and I will seek it out. Please do some more of these value wine comparisons in future episodes.

    Hi Gary,

QOD – Marietta Red Lot # 40…the most current iteration. At $ 10, it goes with just about any food you can throw at it including fish.

Still watching everyday from Hong Kong.

QOD- i’d have to pit the ’04 Razon with the ’04 Bodegas Arrocal as my under $12 favorite wine. Actually the edge would have to go with the Arrocal since I am tasting it as I’m typing and it is much more fantastic 1 day after opening it yesterday. was going to check for more tomorrow, but in reading the comments, I guess the WL is sold out 🙁

otherwise, can’t go wrong with either of the two.

looking forward to tasting the ’05 Rejadorada which was recommended by a staffer on the WL floor a few weeks ago.

hope you are enjoying France. don’t forget to bring something nice/expensive for lizv who appears to be staying behind in NJ.

Tony S – you ever hear of a guy named Jason Taylor. He’s from Akron and loves overrated QBs. I have a feeling he will be as popular in NYC as he is in Chicago.

    Go Browns!

Nick I’m finishing off a bottle of the Sangre de Toro right now, and my daughter loves to play with the toy bull that comes attached to the capsule. Great 10-dollar wine. Here are my two recent faves. (Both from WL). Bodegas Juan Gil Monastrell Jumilla 2004 $11.99. Cherry, currant, tobacco, oak, olive and mushroom. (What a mouthful). Also Domaine La Garrigue 2004 Cotes du Rhone Cuvee Romaine. $9.99. Licorice, black plums and black cherries, Chocolate and tar. Both are delicious, and very interesting.

    QOD
Fave under $10 bottles on the red side would be the 2004 Domaine Jaume Cotes du Rhone La Friande and on the white side a 2005 Domaine de la Potine Sauvignon Blanc (Loire Valley). Two very solid wines that drink like $25 bottles.

    1 Josef Leitz Dragonstone – a riesling
    2. Villa Marie from New Zealand – a Sauvignon Blanc

Great brief episode. One can never have too many high-QPR recommendations and I like it when Italy and Spain get their due appreciation.

Some people missed the detail of the Q.O.D.: what’s the best wine between $10 and $13.
But I agree with SLICK NICK that Torres Sangre de Toro is all killer, no filler and the little plastic bull dangling from the foil is pretty cool. A wine for WL to consider carrying!

My choice in the price range is easily Masi Campofiorin -the first Ripasso- because of the Amarone “experience” it delivers for a fraction of the cost. It’s generally priced under $15, but can be found for $11 or $12, so it’s my answer and vote for election day.

And JASON R. – say it ain’t so! BV? The best between $10-$13? Are we talking Cab or Zin?

In the California “non-chalant” classification, wouldn’t you rather have a Ravenswood “County Series” or a Kenwood?
