BTW, been lurking for a bit and thought I’d finally say hello. This is a fantastic idea, very addictive, and incredibly expensive (ordered alot so far). Nice work.

Gary…could you have sat in a bigger sofa? :P

  12. December 1, 2006

    Jack:)

I like the comfy couch. That is where I drink most of my wine.

  13. December 1, 2006

On the couch. Best place to drink wine.

I definitely enjoyed the use of the sofa in today’s episode. It made me hate my ‘ergonomic’ office chair even more right now, but it totally was a great prop for a ‘Friday, end-of-the-week weekend-is-starting’ show

QOTD – Thinking back it’s tough to remember if I ever did care what other kids thought, but then again my memory struggles to go back farther than what I had for breakfast. I think that it was off an on depending on the grade I was in. For example, in 9th grade, I was probably really cared with what people thought of me ’cause it was my first year in High School…fast forward a couple years when I’m running the place and I could care less. Same thing probably happened between 6th and 8th grade.

  16. December 1, 2006

    Jack:)

    P.S. My couch is stickless.

Gary looks like he’s in the movie “BIG” sitting on that couch! Looks like a novelty couch made to make him look smaller.. sorry, couldn’t resist Gary! Looking forward to the Radio show!

QOD- 8th grade thats when an older girl opened my eyes and nothing would ever be the same!

Gary on that couch is like watching Bob Costas on Inside the NFL

THat is the episode I enjoyed watching the most!! Awesome. You were so relaxed. You were feeling it & rightfully so on a Friday!THe stick?? Freakin HILARIOUS!! I just stocked up on the Red Pillar. Had 1 so far & my tn are on par with yours. Totally a black fruit bomb.

QOD: I guess I stopped caring during college. I was old enough to make my own way in the world so the only opinion that mattered was that of my family.

  20. December 1, 2006

    KAHUNA

GV, Great episode as for the stick “Wash This”. When Hogan slammed Andre the Giant is still my favorite

  21. December 1, 2006

I pimped the Pillar Red on the WLTV Forums a few times. And on WLTV Episode #123 as my favorite $10 wine.

  22. December 1, 2006

    Dan C.

Gary- The ‘04 Pillar Box was also a very good $8 wine. I went through about 4 cases. Fun to drink, to give away, take to parties. Thanks for the episode. Wine is fun.

When are you going to throw left-handed at the camera?

QOD- Probably 11th grade, which is so long ago it’s hard to be sure

  23. December 1, 2006

    Justin

    Gary,

I think that Pillar Box Red gets better on Day 2. You should do a 2 part episode to see how some wines change after a day or two. That would be pretty cool. BTW, that Chateau Bianca Oregon Pinot was a pretty decent everday pinot for $13. Anymore coming in?

    QOD: 9th grade

  24. December 1, 2006

    stewart l

Gary, glad i got to talk to you on the radio show. My wife was envious as she loves Martha. I probably quit caring what other people said when I was in 12th grade. Have a great weekend.

  25. December 1, 2006

    Brandon M

    QOD: 11th Grade

Dude…I don’t know how you do it but it just keeps getting better and better and better and better. After the great thread on the forum, you go and bring it on the show. The Pillar Box is awesome, everyone should try it. Then the toilet flushes and I start ROLLIN…..then everything continues to go “Dress Down Friday” and I loved EVERY bit of it. The color of the couch and the contrast on the wall made the HD Video look SPECTACULAR…when you help the glass up to the camera I reached out and tried to grab it from you!

Just one thing: Wine is only not serious when your not so serious about wine!

You da man…my signature video is on the way soon!

  26. December 1, 2006

    Brooklyn Paul

Awesome ep Gary. Keep ‘em coming.

QOD: To be honest, I don’t think I ever stop caring what respected people think of me. If I care for or respect someone, I never like letting them down.

  27. December 1, 2006

    joe

    Gary,

thanks for my call out and bringing questions back! Speaking of which, what is the best drinking order for Cab and Pinot…..which one first over a multi wine dinner?

    Joe

  28. December 1, 2006

    Brandon M

I can see that Brooklyn..good answer.
I was thinking more along the lines of, I can’t wear that shirt cause so and so doesn’t like it, childish kind of stuff.

    Gary,

Don’t we all still care? Just a little? Maybe not.

    Thanks for the fun! jp

I don’t know guys, I think I have reached the point in my life where I can honestly say I don’t really care what other people think of me. The only exception to this would be my family, I always will and feel I have to care what my family thinks of me. However I am 43 now and I don’t think this occurred until just the last few years.

  31. December 1, 2006

    Charles

Screw Karl S. What the hell dude? I think someone else needs to remove the stick.

Stopped caring in 11th grade. Thought I’d stopped after 8th, but high school was a rude awakening.

    Gary-
Love the scene change! Love this episode!
    :) :):)
Love the couch! Love the energy!
I agree – wine is fun and should always be FUN!
Was the guy who did the spit bucket the same guy as the bathroom guy?
What year did you move to the United States?
    Just curious.
    Very funny and creative episode.
Please do more ‘on the couch’ episodes
where we can see some scene changes.
    Keep up the great work!

Awesome episode. Keep changing things up, that’s what makes the show great! And please keep answering our questions. Now I have one for you…were you in the studio with Martha today or was it by phone? If you were in the studio, is she a babe in person?

That looked like fun today. Even the well-timed reminder about ‘wine is meant to be fun’ was comfortably delivered. It helps to know you are looking in on the forum, because I’m betting even those who say they don’t care what others think would prefer to have you approve of their forum manners.

Wow, I’m mentioned on WLTV! You made my day, Gary. Thanks for the WWE history lesson. I thought Hogan looked a little like Ned Beatty there for a minute.

Gary, I have been watching since day 1 and this show was the best ever. Pure enjoyment! You have us all busting a gut!. I swear I am hooked for life. I hope you know how good this show is now. Wine is fun and you make it that way.

    GV,

Cool episode. The couch was a nice touch. I also listed to you on Martha Stewart’s radio show. So did you meet her? Is she cool or a stiff?

BTW what the heck is cream de-cassis?

QOTD I probably stopped caring what others think of me my first semester in college.

It’s good to be back. Awesome show GV! Do you have any speaking roles for your staff? And were are the credits –

I love WLTV as much as everyone else but I think your last 2 episodes are going in the wrong direction my friend. I agree that wine should be ‘fun’ and not intimidating but since when is your target audience 15 and 16 year olds???

  46. December 1, 2006

    Rick E

GV, Maybe the best episode yet. How you manage to not even break stride after hearing the toilet flush and seeing your compadre walking by wiping his hands on his pants is beyond me. And being called out for your shenanigans one question after yanking a tree branch out of your ass? I just don’t know where you go from here.

My only complaint? Dude, it’s Friday. Swallow for pete’s sake.

QOTD: I would have to say it started with the sophomore year (HS) rebellion. Garage band, trench coat, warm six packs, and Bono mullet. (It was the 80’s, after all).

  47. December 1, 2006

    Karen Lorentz

You mentioned me on the air! How cool is that! I served Thorne Clark Shotfire Shiraz and it was a great with the chicken. I think that wine would be great with cardboard.

I have another question. I noticed when you were “relaxing” after you had already officially tasted today’s wine, you took a sip of wine and still swished around in your mouth for a few seconds before swallowing. When you go out to dinner or you’re enjoying wine at home…do you always swish it around a little before you drink it??

I laughed my butt off watching this episode this evening. What a way to end the week! Wine is all about fun and good time, about being healthy and happy. I stopped caring about what my peers said when I was like in 7th grade. I’ve always gone my own way, and some like me and admire me for who I am. Some just don’t. I bet many of the people who regularly watch this show have some things in common. Otherwise, we just would not (watch Gary), like many others might have chosen to do. I’m proud of WLTV. BTW, I had a Cotes du Rhone this evening with dinner. I’ve had too many old world wines this week. Enough of it, give me an explosive fruit bomb!!

  51. December 1, 2006

    EJ

Hilarious episode!!!!! This should be the setting for WLTV every friday! One of the best episodes!

As for Karl and BigAl— they just don’t get it. gary’s personality is what makes WLTV what it is and what makes us rush every day to enjoy our daily video (just think, there are many Vayniacs that keep refreshing on the WLTV website all day long just to be the first to post! how many “web2.0″ sites (still don’t know what that means)can say that! Gary, keep doing what you are doing. Karl and BigAl can find another site to share their sticks.

  52. December 1, 2006

    gordoyflaca

GV, it’s your show, and you can do it how you want! I love WLTV, but I also read Wine Spectator, and Wine Advocate, and Eric Asimov’s NYTimes blog, and WineLoversPage, and Wine News. Everybody has their own style, and I learn what I can from each, and sometimes I agree, and sometimes I don’t, and I try the wine myself and make my own decision.

Keep it fun. There are plenty of resources out there for people who prefer a different approach. Lurkers, keep an open mind- you can always learn from someone with a different point of view.

  53. December 1, 2006

    Jaye

I think I will always care what certain people think of of me — people I care about. For others I will be respectful, but I will not be concerned what their opinion is of me. I could NEVER be a politician.

  54. December 1, 2006

    thorazine

    Top 100? YES!!!

Ok, enough of that. This is part two of the “Canadian Contingency”. Great episode, I liked the questions and your take on things. I’m really just getting into wine, but WLTV is definitely opening my eyes to a lot of things. It’s so easy to get caught up in points, scores, names, etc, it’s nice to see the subject tackled from all angles.

That being said…missplaced energy? I love the energy this show has…to see someone genuinely enjoying themselves in doing what they do…what more could you ask for?

Also, for food pairings…obviously some things are more appropriate then with others…but I’ve found in my limited experience that if a wine is thought provoking…it goes with anything.

QOD: Grade 11…that’s was definitely the TSN turning point (

  55. December 1, 2006

    Hey Gary,
Longtime lurker here. I stopped caring about what others thought the summer after my sophomore year. That was the summer I lost my virginity and fell in love with wine. Actually it happened on the same night. Of course it was sangria, but you have to start somewhere. Lets just say I was the “man” in 11th grade.

    Gary-
    I am soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
GLAD to see you have an iPod.
Is that a nano I see?
Do you also have a video iPod?
You know – for watching WLTV!

    That was awesome Gary.
Glad to talk to you today on the Martha Stewart show.

    Nice flush in the background!!!

    Wine Dog

Ok I’m a lurker… and I’m out!!! I just learned about winelibrary and I’ve been working my way through the library and was going to reveal myself when I got through, but hell, challenged like this, I’m out now. Great show. You’re the Rodney Dangerfield of Wine. Next time I’m in Jersey I’m in the house. Like you, I love a wine that’s worth $100 but costs $25 but I’ll pay for something exceptional. I buy a lot of Cali on futures – Santa Barbara Barrel Tasting every year and love ZAP. Keep up the good work. I’m on episode #40 and climbing. Oh and by the way…. Go Bears!!!

  59. December 2, 2006

    Wine Dog

Oh… and after I moved from Cleveland to Chicago in 6th grade, I never cared a bit what others thought. When I went to college in 1977 everyone drank beer. Thank God I looked 19 (remember a long time ago) and could buy wine. Fell in love with Mondavi, Stag’s Leap and BV with steak in Tucson before I knew why I liked them.

  60. December 2, 2006

    Voltron

i stoped caring somewhere between 4th and 7th grade.
    and it was cool.

  61. December 2, 2006

    Tom L

Gary – I never stopped caring what other people think of me. Of course there is a difference now. When I was a child, I just wanted people to like me. Now I just want them to respect me. I guess the change over occurred when I went into the Marine Corps.

Your review of the Pillar Red today had me drooling. I immediately tried to order some, but it was out of stock. I know you don’t review wines to increase sales, but you are still the boss. So kick some ass and get more of that 89+ great value wine in stock.

  62. December 2, 2006

    Lynne

    That was so stinkin’ funny!!

QOD: I stopped having so many problems when I actually BEGAN caring about people; what they thought and how they felt, not necessarily about me, but in general. For me, caring = results.
BTW, I took my stick out a long time ago. That’s why I think WLTV is da bomb!!

  63. December 2, 2006

    Vinacull

    Gary,
Thanks so much for reviewing the Pillar Box Red, and I think all of your comments were exactly spot on (except for perhaps the chocolate covered strawberries??). For unadulterated hedonism, it is one of my favorites under nine bones, but not so much for those who like old world style. When you pulled the stick out I horked my morning coffee out my nose. Freakin hillarious! It is wonderful to see your own example of not taking things so seriously. I also can’t believe I SAW the actual program you were describing —- when Hulk Hogan broke the dreaded “camel clutch” of the Iron Sheik and came to rule the WWF for nigh on ten years. Jeez that seems so long ago…

  64. December 2, 2006

    jason carey

i stopped caring in 8th or 9th grade, and although tough when younger, it pays off when you mature
and learn to live true to yourself and not for other’s

  65. December 2, 2006

    RayLay

    Longtime lurker. Ravens/skins fan.

QOTD: 11th. The insecurities left when I realized that everyone’s poop smells too! Long story short: had some diarrea one day and let’s just say school was pretty eventful. :@

I currently am the manager for my father’s liquor/beer/wine store. The most hardest and ridiculous part about running this store is that everyone sticks to the brands that they know best. Whenever you do WLTV you always show wines that no one knows about. It’s so hard to get people away from KJ/Yellow Tail/Beringer W/Z etc. Everyone in the neighborhood that we cater too is in that “fruit bomb” phrase. That Henry’s Drive Pillar box red is an excellent choice and I have been carrying that for the past 3 months.

My question to you is, have you done any benefit tastings?

  66. December 2, 2006

    Rebecca

WLTV just keeps getting better and better and the favorite episodes list just keeps getting longer and longer!! Your definately giving Jason loads of material for his next video.

I’d of loved to have been able to have heard the Martha show. I like Martha Stewart and she doesn’t know me but, my family and hers were neighbors where she and I both grew up in the Nutley, NJ – I’d bet she ice skated at the “Mudhole” in the winter – I wonder if she fell in on the thin ice like every other kid from Nutley! Anyway, we’ve been fans of hers for 20 years. One thing I respect about Martha is that she definately doesn’t seem to concerned about what people think of her!
QOD: I think I stopped caring about “what the Jones’ thought” by junior year of high school. I can still hear my Dad saying “stop worring about what the Jones’ think” or something like “if he/she (one of your peers) told you to jump off a bridge would you do it?” Good little life lessons that you learn from your parents during those great, yet awkward teenage years…..

Looking forward to my trip to Wine Library this afternoon to pick up a few Christmas gifts for some fellow wine lovers and a few everyday gifts for myself!
    See you later…

  67. December 2, 2006

    KAHUNA

Rebecca – Nutley is a great town- they used to have some great pizza places on Franlin and a good sub place that I dont know if it is still their – I believe it was calle Hole in the wall- had some friends and families from Nutley

I have to say after reading ALL of the comments I think that the forum has done the comment section a world of good. I love the ebb and flow of commenting on the show….maybe I’ll move back over here and flood it!!!! JK

Great comments everyone, great to see a few lurkers as well.

Great episode, you crack me up. It is not fair that you have so much fun at work :-) Keep up the wonderful “work”.

QOD I was an oddball I never really cared what others thought of me, that was just they way I was raised I guess. The only one that mattered was the person in the mirror.

Just found WLTV, watched 10 episodes in a row and counting.

I haven’t completely stopped caring, and I probably never will.

I simply try to continually improve my response(s) to both positive and negative opinions.

  74. December 3, 2006

During college (second year) I gave up. I gave the world the finger! I then went into my own computer business.. The rest is history.

It is funny that this is the QOD, because I was just talking tonight to a friend about this very topic! Right after my divorce, I immediately quit caring what others thought or had to say to me about who I should hook up with. I had dutifully tried it my family’s way, and had failed miserably. Right out of college I married someone with had the requisite college degree, who was of my same racial background, who was supposedly “going places,” yada, yada, yada….my family joyfully thought we were a good “match” and encouraged me to follow the matrimonial track and, being young and dumb, I am sad to say that I was stupid enough to fall for the hype.
By following the expectations of others instead of my own mind, however, I ended up with just what I deserved: An absolute cad who I ended up wasting 6 years of my life with! Stupid me! On a happier note, though, 10 years later I am sooooo happy now, living a full and rich life, surrounded by plenty of positive people who I can cut from my acquaintance if they ever end up getting crazy on me. Yeah, the family does still try to lay that guilt trip on from time to time, but now when they get on my last nerve and won’t shut the * up about what I should be doing with my life, I just go on the counter-attack about THEIR lives, and the skirmish ends easily. If that doesn’t work, well, there’s always wine to help me to forget! :-)

  76. December 3, 2006

    Brian K

HAHAha.. this was a great episode! I think I’ve seen that stick somewhere before…

When did I stop caring.. honestly not too long ago now! I’m 30 years old… and I think I just stopped a year or two ago.
I used to think way too much about it.. now I am enjoying life!
    F everybody :)
    (in a nice way..)

Still watching everyday from Hong Kong.

Gary! Sauternes with the House?! Need I remind you, you also offered Champagne (albiet a “Grower”) as the perfect “first date” wine? I thought you break rules! I thought you lived on the edge! You’ve become predictable, man. I’m beginning to read you like a cheap novel! Work with me, man, work with me. Just kidding…you crack me up as always. Thanks for answering another one of my questions on the air! (For the record…Denise’s questions answered = 2, HLS’s questions answered = 1. I’m winning, chump.)

    I love this show.

    Gary,
What a surprise! I had a busy weekend and didn’t get to view Friday’s WLTV episode until a little while ago. I was very pleasantly surprised to see that you tasted my request! I’m glad I got my order in early, since it sold out. I can’t wait to give it a try! Thanks again.

in a superficial way, I quit caring in college when I was around more people with similar interests, etc….

But really, do we every really quit caring what people think? That’s how we all are able to live together…..

One example of being able to think for myself inrespect to wine is how I bought wine. I used to try to get as many things off the WS top 100 that I could afford, which at the time was maybe a half dozen or so. (I bought one this year and was underwhelmed to say the least) Now I rely on my own pallate and people who I know. Its more fun to find a wine that is twice as fun for half the price that flies under the press radar.

Hey GV, how about another episode of great wines we’ve never heard of, or at least not very much about.

    Excellent episode once again, GV.

QOD: Sadly, throughout my ELHI school days, I usually cared what other people thought. Annoyingly to most of my peers, I was an “honors” student and geeks weren’t exactly the most popular students around to many people. That all changed in college. It was about that time that I read a book by the brillian physicist Richard Feynman entitled, “What Do You Care What Other People Think?” (I know, ridiculously geeky reference!) A great book. It has nothing to do with science. It is about living your life to the fullest.

Great episode Gary, been a long time since I wrote the last time but here are again.
QOD I have never really cared for what other people think of me, what they see is what they get, if they don’t like it, that is too bad.

Gary, sorry for the late response. I’ll tell you, you certainly make wine fun for the rest of us. Your episode reminded me of the words my father said to me when I told him I would like to play football for a living because it was “fun”. He said,” It’s no longer a game when you start getting paid for it”. That was followed by ” it’s a lucky man who gets paid for a job he loves to do”. All along, being a Vascular Surgeon, I thought I had the best job in the world, now I think that anything better would be absolutely Vay-Ner-Chuck!!

    Gary,
Martha may be a bit too austere for you, but I do think she knows fun when it is near. And you, dude, are fun! I am a little astonished that here in California, on the Central Coast, I look to you, out in NJ, for a sober yet playful take on wine. I work in a quality winery and yet I am gleefully ‘borrowing’ from your efforts, the marketing tips and general philosophy that I think punctuates a disabling seriousness that interfers with the enjoyment of wine. Go toe to toe with Parker: there is nothing but an upside.
Broadway Joe, byb, was a childhood hero of mine.
    Great work

Gary, I have attended Steven Tanzer led tasting, Michael Broadbent and Robert Parker. You’re more fun to watch and I learn just as much as listening to them. Keep it up. Glad you tasted the Pillar Box. It has been a favorite since the first time we opened it here and my friends keep asking for more and it’s cheap!!!

    Gary,

I thought your “Wine Is Fun” (episode 138) was, well FUN! Honestly, I saw that if I viewed a video and commented on it (LA TIMES) that I would receive a free wine tote bag; therefore, I am commenting. I may even return and view some other episodes. You accomplished your goal through your LA TIMES ad, well done! I like your approach to wine, as well as your “no rules” attitude towards pairing. People have different tastes, of course some things always mesh together, but sometimes people have their own flavors. Well done. By the way, I love German Riesling. Schmitt and Sonne make excellent Rieslings! Goes great with fish and probably many other “dishes” as well, including most seafoods! Keep up the good work. Oh, and hopefully your advertisement was true and NOT FALSE, and I will be receiving a free tote! Thanks!

9th grade. Love the Pillar Box as a hedonistic fruit bomb, but I have never been able to get it under $10 (at which it is still a steal). Would probably drink a pale ale with the gingerbread house, followed by a nice red and pretend it was paired with something. If I’m eating poop, I could probably afford a Burgundy to go with it.

I’ll admit some guilt in the ‘too serious’ department. Nice to get a little slap to get back to what excites you about things in life. I believe there’s a fantastic quote in the out-takes of Mondovino that talks about this…

    I wanted to thank you.
I just started to get into wine last year (2007)
As you know it is very difficult to dive in. but you have helped.
my father worked for the PA liquor stores for 40 years. before he retiered 10 years ago, he was one of the most knowledgable people for wine working for the PLCB. he has been very excited to be able to share wine with me finally. but i am so new to it that there is an enormous gap in language and ability to share.
i began watching you show in october of 2007. beyond your being so entertaining, your effort to make wine accessible has made the relationship between my father and i better. i thank you sincerely and humbly for this.
i will do what i can to support you and your brilliant show from now on!
    have a great new year!
