My goodness, WL’s price for the ‘99 Penley Cab is 20-30$ CHEAPER than what I am finding at west coast — and other — sources. Too good to pass up? My wife is going to kill me. Hope the wine gets here first.

No one referred me to WLTV…I was already a WL customer.

And about Gary’s late night emails….he just emailed me at 2:09am last week…he was just responding to a simple question in the comments section…I honestly wasn’t even looking for a response.

    Go Gary.

Gary, thanks for answering my wine website question with an abundance of suggestions (nice music to accompany them too). You’ll always be #1 by far, but thought I’d get a feel for what else is out there too.

QOD: I had signed up for the WL mailing list (don’t know how I heard of it, I live in Cali and don’t order much online, but anyways) and I got the email blast about the first episode. As a young wine drinker (22), this embrace of modern technology really appealed to me, as it seemed no one was doing it at the time. No one is really doing it worth a damn besides you even now. I checked out that first episode, and have watched every single one since. Hopefully your example prompts some other folks to step into the 21st century!

My boss recommended this site. I bit figuring I could score some brownie points and found a gold mine instead. My wine IQ has gone up, my wallet is lighter (but not as light as it would have been buying somewhere else where I have seen consistently higher prices) and my palette is happy. Thank you and hope it’s Cowboys – Jets in the Superbowl. Anyway Justin ‘03 Cab is out of this world.

Just 45 minutes…referral came from a Google search I did to learn about cabernet sauvignon, which I had been focusing my wine making efforts upon. WL came up and in reading about one of the wines, I caught the video link when reading about the Twenty Rows Cabernet Sauvignon. So, i guess I referred myself.

Trust your own palate. Great advice. The best advice.
But how to nudge that along with a more general wine education for the consumer? Perhaps you could explore specific appelations, from Finger Lakes Rieslings to New Mexico Cabs; From Idaho whatever’s to Washington St. Syrahs; From Michigan Sylvaners, if such exist, on to Arizona bubbly. Perhaps go on location. Might be strange, even awful at times, but you belong on a national stage. It’s only a matter of time.

WOW! This was as good a show as you’ve done. Nice job. Maybe you could think of just drinking on Fridays instead of spitting. For me, it just sorta goes w/ the day.
QOD: I got the tip from a guy on another wine forum. A good regular kinda guy. I forget who though. It was somewhere in the middle of July.

QOTD: I was ordering from WL before there was a WLTV. I loved the selection and price, although always wondered why I should care that “our director of operations rates this a screaming value”. Who cares? Of course, that was before I knew ye, GV.

And I just looked at My Account, and saw my first order was in April of ‘05. And more importantly, that was exactly 15 orders ago. Oh well, I guess all the kids don’t need to go to college.

The huge billboard on 78 referred me. I have passed it I don’t know how many times coming back from EWR. I finally Goggled WineLibrary.

I have missed a few episodes. It’s good to see you relaxed again. You look like your batteries are recharged. Nice work.

    Gary,
You rock. . .I’ve been lurking fot a week or so.

    Gary,

Pittsburgh styles steaks rock the friggin house down. Burnt like hell on the outside and still kicking on the inside. By the way, my high school played Curtis Martins high school in the playoffs his senior year. My school won something like 41-0 and Martin was totally shut down. As a big Pitt fan I’m glad he went on to have a great (HOF???) NFL career. I found this place searching for wine through winezap.

    Hi Gary,

I don’t usually take time to leave comments, but you guilted me into it :) Great episode as always. I actually found wine library cause people were talking about it on another forum and saying good things. I found WLTV when someone posted a link to your episode on how a wine glass effects wine not long ago. Great episode BTW! I started watching the other episodes (still not caught up) and appreciate your honest tasting notes. I think you are doing a great job.

    Gary-

love the laid back episodes. They are much-deserved.

Your philosophy reminds me alot of John and Dottie’s from WSJ.

QOD: I saw the huge billboard on 78. I checked out the website, and was amazed by the prices and selection. i clicked onto the tv tab and there were 25 episodes of WLTV up. The first vlog i watched was GV panning the Frog’s Leap zinfandel and i have been hooked since.

Gary- WOW nice Friday episode. Funny, I am having an ‘02 Aussie Cab- Kangarilla Road. Really good, off the market now, but I have a few more in the cellar. I agree about the aussie cabs, a great variety of styles at good prices.

QOD- I was already a WL customer and started watching. Best wine blog by far.

    Have a great weekend!

    Darlene O.

Great Friday episode. QOD – Reading the forums on WS in late July, early August, one of the forumites mentioned your site and I had to check it out. Been a daily staple for me ever since. Don’t miss a one. Thank you, Gary.

  40. December 8, 2006

    Russ J

Thanks for the continued hard work, GV. You do answer e-mails. Don’t know if I ever got any “after hours”. I was a WL customer before WLTV. A business associate from the Philly area heard about the store (don’t remember how) and told me to check it out for him since I was close by. The rest is history as they say. And yes, the NY Jets play in New Jersey. That’s your second slip up recently. Come on! No more third person references and no more saying the Jets play in NY. (insert smiley emoticon here….)

Good episode. Will try to pick up some Penley. On the Leeuwin, why did you not mention Parkers 89 score (which both you and Tanzer disagree with)? Just curious.

I have received emails from Gary penned in the middle of the night. Thank you for answering every email I have ever sent. Props. Note the time I am commenting to you!

QOD: I have been receiving weekly emails from WL for a couple of years, and when WLTV launched, I didn’t think I would enjoy it, so I never watched it. In the 60’s, I watched an episode that I was interested in, became addicted, and have been loyal ever since. I have watched nearly every episode now, and continue to enjoy them every night.

Thanks for all you continue to do- you make drinking wine fun and enjoyable.

    Hey Gary!

I found your site through SimpleBits.com. It’s a site normally about web design, but he mentioned you on Nov. 30, 06, comparing you to Ze Frank — another favorite of mine on the WWW.

To any one interested, you can find me on Cork’d as ‘biocsnerd’. I’m new to the wine world, so don’t expect anything too interesting :D

QOD: I got the chance to meet, document and make wine with the Coturri’s in Glen Ellen for a few days this harvest, and when I got back from the fabulous time, did a little more research to find your AWESOME interview/tasting with Tony (#35)! That’s how I found out about you, and now, I just enjoy the show and learn a lot about wine. It’s truly entertaining, because you are so good at what you do… You captivate your audience in a positive and up-beat manner, while really knowing wine back to front.

I am hooked! Thank you for the HARD WORK!

Funny, it’s always been my belief that one should trust and develop their own personal palette. And this goes for everything from bread to chocolate! Just this evening at the City Beer Store in SF I was telling a guy who recently got introduced to Belgian beers, not to worry, taste taste and taste some more. It’s the best way to learn….. Same goes for wine of course!

    Hey Gary,
Great episode and very surprised by the description of the Penley. But a ‘99 and a ‘2000 “readily available around the country” ?? Hmmm…. QOTD: Yeah, that billboard on 78 is like a hypnotizing beacon calling my name. My seven year old exclaims “Daddy are we going to that place AGAIN?!” However the original source for me was searching on the WL site. Cheers, C

    Trish da' Dish

I found out about WLTV from, of all things, a very popular bargain-hunter’s website: http://www.fatwallet.com. Someone had posted a “free shipping” code there. Since this was the 1st time I’d ever seen a wine store offering free shipping with no bottle limits (i.e., 1 bottle to infinity, and beyond!), I hurried on over and checked out their prices…unbelievably low! So I stocked myself up with a quickness! THEN I noticed this unobtrusive little tab on the homepage that said, “TV.” I clicked on it—Gary V. totally blew me away—and I got addicted to him just like I got addicted to “24″ and Jack Bauer—the rest is history!

I went to work after that weekend and referred everyone in my wine tasting mail list to it. I also went to my fav local wine store, and told one of the “cool” employees about it. He knows a lot, and teaches a lot of their wine tasting classes. He pulled it up while I was there, and now he admits that he’s addicted to you/your concept, and is living for the next free shipping code, too.

Gary: Viral advertising. Word of mouth recommendation. This is why network marketing is all about and I’m sure a lot of us on here do this for you already because we love you, so one day you probably will grow so much that you will be rich enough to buy the Jets. That said- if you write your plans/dreams down somewhere, and if you post them where you’ll always be confronted with them, experts claim that this prompts you to work every day towards your goal, and that people who do this are far more likely to be successful than people who merely speak their goals.

You might also want to designate a percentage of each of your WLTV paychecks towards buying the Jets. Funny story: This one radio guy wanted a plasma TV really bad. So he opened a PayPal account and he told the folks on the radio and everyone he knew about his dream and about his Paypal account he’d established for this purpose, and he let them know that if they wanted to donate a dollar or so, they could. Some people of course thought he was selfish and crass and crude, but to be fair he was very upfront about what he was going to do with the money–he wasn’t lying and pretending to be a charity promising to save the world or anything–if people wanted to help him, what was wrong with that? He actually made a respectable amount of money! Who whudda thunk? Maybe someone rich here will hit the Powerball or remember you in their will, or something, and you’ll be unexpectedly much closer to your goal. Anyway, I hope that you DO achieve your goal of owning the Jets one day… :-)

For the record, I don’t remember getting anything later than 0030 EST. But is he crankin’ out email at 8:30 on a Saturday morning, that’s what I wanna know.

Count your blessings: it isn’t the Bills at home in December. That would be truly frightening.

Big leather couches and Pittsburgh steak are both beautiful things, as are mixed cases and http://www.thewinedoctor.net – a lot like wineanorak, but maybe a little more Bdx-focused.

I ran across a winery going through Kansas this week. It smelled of elderberries! Had any positive experiences drinking from unorthodox parts of the USA, ie Kansas, Missouri, Texas and so on?

QOD: long before there was a WLTV, was looking for some Aglianico and used The Google! (Found some, too. I should see how that last bottle’s doing …)

    Gary,
I discovered WL when a free shipping code appeared on the Wine Spectator website. I tried it and have been hooked ever since. The addition of WLTV has made this site even better. Keep up the good work.

    Gary VAY NER CHUK,

I’ll admit it dude, I have been a lurker. I have been watching WLTV for about a month now. Since then I have watched everyday, and even went back to Episode # 1 and watched every single episode to catch up (by the way the wine room looks awesome ). Anyway, I love what your doing and appreciate your candidness. Sorry I haven’t commented before, I just get home late and there are already, 50-70 comments up so I feel like you’ll never see mine. So, hopefully you’ll see this one, give me a shout out and I’ll be sure not to lurk ever again. And by the way thanks for the Charles Creek Merlot on “free”, going to open it tonight paired with a leg of lamb. And in reference to 05 Bordeaux, any one imparticular you can reccommend in the $20-30 range, I’d love to lay one down.

    Thanks Gary
KEEP UP TO GREAT WORK, I THINK I CAN SPEAK FOR ALL OF US WHEN I SAY THAT WE APPRECIATE IT.

I’m loving the Laid-back Friday episodes. I say you should keep with them.
QOTD – Did a google search back in February and stumbled upon the WLTV. The rest is history.

QOD – I heard about Wine Library TV from WineLoversPage.com. They show a picture of an episode at the top of their page and provide a link.

Thanks for the 2005 Bordeaux advice. Now I have homework: Find a nice 2005 Bordeaux and find out how to store a bottle of wine for 5 years.

  64. December 9, 2006

    Sherri

    Gary,
OK…another lurker guilted into joining the party. I heard you on Martha Stewart Radio on Sirus (not the last time but the time before that) and have been checking out every episode since then. Because of YOU (and a little bit of me), my husband and I have broken out of the Yellow Tail doldrums and are trying new wines every weekend! I love your spirit, the way you describe wines and your honesty! Since I started to actually pay attention to what I like.. I have given wines a PASS that I would have typically just kept drinking because it’s there. Very liberating!! I WISH that my state allowed shipping but Massachusetts stinks that way. We are planning an expedition to your Wine Library store in NJ over the holidays while we are down there visiting friends. Keep up the great work!

    GO PATS!

  65. December 9, 2006

    You refered me to WLTV.

  66. December 9, 2006

    Bill

Hi Gary – I am one of those you have emailed in the early hours . . . on more than one occasion, so thanks for that! And no-one referred me to wltv, as I found it on your website basically at the very beginning. Nice job on Aussie cabernets today! It would be great to look at a few others as well from Coonawarra, like Zema and Bowen Estate. Also occasionally some other areas produce some damned fine cabs. I will bet no one in this country has tried a quality cab from Mudgee (Peterson’s “Ian’s Selection”)!!
Keep up the good work – we appreciate it!!

  67. December 9, 2006

    mr.francophile

I first came across Wine Library from wine-searcher.com, you guys had a great price on a wine i was looking for, and i joined the email list. I never bothered with wltv in the emails until i saw Gary with the Hulk Hogan mask on. I had to click the link to see what this was about, and i’ve been a fan ever since. I really like how Gary takes some of the snobbery out of wine tasting/collecting and has a great down to earth approach. Now im hooked, and seem to be making frequent donations to wine library.

  68. December 9, 2006

    Joe P.

    Gary,

I got hooked on WLTV in July. I search on “wine” in Google video and stumbled onto your vlog! The rest is history. I’m spreading the word that your show is Must-See “Online TV.” Keep up the great work. jp

    Hi Gary,

Came across this site on Wine Lovers’ Page, where your mug has been making appearances of late. Very much a fan of what you’re doing here.

Loved your advice about people needing to trust themselves instead of the experts. Have you read Wine Style, by Mary Ewing-Mulligan and Ed McCarthy? It’s all about helping people find what they like in terms of wine styles and tastes. A great line on the back cover says it all: “Who knows more about great wine than you? No one–when it comes to what wines will actually be ‘great’ to your taste. Wine labels and recommendations can help you make choices, but ultimately you are the best judge of the right wines for you.”

Very readable, which shouldn’t be surprising as they authored the Wine for Dummies books.

    Enjoy the weekend.

More imprtantly, how’s your home life? I mean c’mon, surely there’s something better to be doing at 3am than satisfying your fan base… What about the fan that awaits you in bed… Does she cry herself to sleep every night ;-)

    Hi Gary,

I have received a late night e-mail from Gazza. (That’s Australian for Gary, by the way)

I first heard of Wine Library via the Mark Squires’ board. I purchased from wine from them, and was so impressed I kept up with the website, and then one day, boom! there it was – WLTV.

I came over from wine.woot.com. Since you did the monkey wine tasting I have been hooked into your show! I have started to watch the episodes from the 1st one this weekend. I have about 130 more to go! So i am about a week and half into the mix here with your show.

gary have you done any Temecula, CA wines? I live 20 minutes north of the area in Corona, CA. I would like to know if you done any shows on those or matbe you can gear up for a show like that. There is a major growth in the temecula wines and more acceptance. But would like to get any suggestions on these wines. Thanks!

    Gary,
I heard about this site from WOOT, and I’m glad I did. By the way, my Dolphins did their job and kicked the crap out of the Patties, but where were the Jets? They could have been a game off of the division lead, and they got beat by the Bills? I think it’s the curse of Fireman Fred. He is one dirty bastard.

Geez, Gary, did someone say the Jets haven’t been in a Super Bowl since the Ford administration? Another dreamer, not that current. We both know it was the TrickyDicky admin., don’t we? Seems that the Jets and Nixon sort of go together. How lovely.

I found Wine Library TV from the Pod Tech article about the Vloggies. (http://www.podtech.net/home/technology/1441/and-the-vloggies-winners-are). I am an American expat living in Milan, Italy and really like when you feature Italian wines. I find it hard to come by California, Australian, and to some degree French wines. I guess that makes sense, when you have Brunello, Barolo, Barbaresco, etc. grown in your backyard.

OK. ‘05 Bordeaux. Noted for the next time I cross the border :-)

I’d have to say the first person who turned me on to WLTV was Ian Dorin the fantastic new world buyer for your store. I’d also like to add that not only does Gary answer all of your emails until 3-4am he also anwers his employees emails then too.

QOD: I believe I got to WLTV through the WL emails — had been on the WL email list for well over a year, and came to WLTV through that at the very beginning.

Gary — Painful loss yesterday. I really can’t figure this team out. Truly a Jekyl and Hyde team. Looked GREAT against GB, at NE and looked like a 2-12 team against J’ville and yesterday against the Bills. Pathetic on both sides of the ball. Ugh. Need to win out now to have a shot…

I came across WLTV via YouTube on a search for any info or shows on wine. I was previously listening to goodlibations.com radio show and found it to be…not what I was looking for. I started watching the show at around episode 70ish and have emailed a few times and you always respond. Boy, will I miss that interaction when you get to big to stay in contact with your fans.
I’m so glad I found your show and I have been telling everyone about it. Keep going dude, You Rock!

i spend WAY too much money at WL, so i discovered WLTV during one of my frequent “shopping” trips. It is a lot of fun — and if you need any further reinforcement of Gary’s point that taste is personal, look at his hilarious, and very descriptive, terms he uses for taste and bouquet! I am not sure there is ANY resource that includes “carnival urinal” (used in an earlier episode) as a descriptor for a wine’s mid-palate! i love to watch this show as it reflects my sensibilities – wine is supposed to be fun to drink and prices should reflect the experience not the brand. Thanks, Gary.

    Hey Gary,

I have been coming to your store since it was the little building with the very small cramped parking lot. I always liked the way your guys carried my wine to my car without even asking if I needed help. Great service all around! Since I am a longtime customer, I heard about WLTV through the WL website and have been loving it ever since :)

Been watching since the feature on front page of the Wall Street Journal. I agree with some other posters, you are destined for a much bigger stage. Books, TV shows, movies–the life and times of Gary Vaynerchuk! HUGE! I will miss the email returns, but when you have millions of emails each day–and you will—you will be overwhelmed–in a good way! For those of you who haven’t met Gary in person, he is personable, funny, friendly, a genuinely sweet guy. Just wandering around his store he was easily approachable and really cute! Keep up the good work……..Joyce

    Hey Gary…

It’s noon Monday…so, I’m sure you’re getting ready for today’s episode. But, I just wanted to answer the QOD: My friend Danny showed me your site….I forget when, but it was somewhere around episode 50 or so. I’ve been addicted since.

I like the laid back Friday episodes. I don’t think you should spit on the Friday ones though. But that’s me, I don’t ever spit unless I’m at a tasting with more than 10 wines. I don’t like getting drunk (which is why I’ll spit at a large tasting), but I think spitting ruins the full effect of the finish. Like I said, I’ll spit when there’s a bunch of wine to taste cause I really want to taste them and not feel them and get back to work or home, but c’mon…2-4 tastes?? Especially on a Friday…relax…you work hard enough! Leave the spit bucket for the people who just started getting into wine.

See you later, sorry about your Jets. It’s probably my fault, I picked the Bills in my office pool. Go BEARS!!!

No-one referred me. I discovered it while hunting the internet for a specific wine. I got referred over to the WL site, and the rest is history. I think it was around epsiode 30 or so. Think I’ve seen them all since then. A great break from work every afternoon.
