Great job with the intro on the Grenache grape.

I gotta try the Kaesler. It sounds exactly how I like it.

Nothing fancy, I’ll be drinking N.V. Pierre Moncuit Champagne Cuvée Pierre Moncuit-Delos Blanc de Blancs Brut Grand Cru, which I picked up on your recommendation a while back when you did a Champagne episode. That’s what I’ll be having around midnight, after dinner.

Eugene, thanks for realizing “number posting” is dumb. Now, my friend, take the next step…

Driven by petrol flavors, high alcohol, a lot of acidity- did someone pour some Chevron Super Unleaded in your bottle? Will have to pass on the Domaine Magellan Grenache Blanc.

Regarding the Bonny Doon Clos Gilroy Grenache- floral pudding? Jason Hicks, save this one. My mom never served me that.

I saw the mini VaynerClank with the Kilikanoon. Don’t think I have ever seen Gary score a wine 89 points with a clank of the teeth.

I love the VaynerDribble down the bottle of The Fave.

Thank you for doing the show today. I know we rode you hard in the forum, but you served us the first hit of crack, we are just craving more and more. I agree with other posters- bank a few so when needed, you can take the “day” off.

QOD: haven’t thought that far in advance.

Sorry about the Jets bro. Let’s drown our sorrows in the ATL tonight.

    Gary,

I am drinking a NV Schramsberg North Coast Mirabelle Brut Rose Sparkling Wine. Good stuff…and it was quite affordable too. If you’ve never tasted it…wonderful body, great acidity, nice balance, plenty of yeasty/honey notes, and firmer tannins than most brut roses that I have tried. I have nothing selected for dinner yet. It will be a standing rib roast as an entree. Any suggestions of what I should drink in the $15-$30 range? Thanks Gary

No garlic in the Clos du Gilroy? I’m disappointed as that is the classic note in this wine. I haven’t had this vintage, but it usually screams “GARLIC!!!!” out of the glass I might have to pass on this one.

I’ve been lurking for a little over a week now – didn’t come out this weekend, but thought I’d get into it today! Cheers on the site, nice design and I love the tasting videos. Not sure what I’m drinking for New Year’s – I’ll probably pull out one of the decent bottles in the collection, since I’m not a fan of sparklers. Thanks for the grenache review, my girlfriend will love it!

QOD: Haven’t figured out New Years Eve vino yet. Needless to say it will be bubbly…

NYJ: I think this week we see what kind of coach Eric Mangini is — can he get this team up and prepared to win this “must-win” game against a very beatable Minny team? Win out and they’ve still got a reasonable chance, given the schedules of the other contenders. A big test for the Jets and this rookie coach. GO JETS!

Kevin Mitchell: Surprisingly a quick google and youtube search did not turn up the Kevin Mitchell catch (which I remember VERY well!). If anyone finds it, post a link — a GREAT catch. BTW, David Wright made a similar catch last year I believe…

Hmm… I’m not sure what I’m going to drink for New Years yet. I’ve not had much champagne in my life, but those that I’ve had were usually mixed with a hint of raspberry with a sugar-rimmed glass. Perhaps I’ll prepare some of these for my friends and family.

I’d really like to get my hands on a very special bottle of wine too. I’m not exactly sure what, but I’m sure my local wine store will have something neat for me. Perhaps something white as I’ve had a lot of red lately.

Speaking of red: I had some Gato Negro Merlot last weekend. Horrible! It was like biting into the vine itself. It’s a very cheap bottle of wine ($9.05 CAD), but I was hoping for something a little better than the juice of a vine dyed red.

I haven’t decided what to buy for New Year’s Eve, but I’m a *huge* fan of German wines. Do sparkling German wines exist, and are they worthwhile? A positive answer here could possibly change my world.

Hi Gary — I watched today’s episode with lots of interest since I have really enjoyed Australian Grenache in the past. In fact, I think I will open one up tonight! I am delighted that you chose to do an episode after all!

As for the QOD, I had purchased the Drappier BdB on your recommendation from the “Grower Champagnes” episode and tried it on Thanksgiving. It was the first champagne I have ever really enjoyed (it must be said I haven’t had much champagne). As a result I bought more and will be sharing that with my neighbors on New Years. Hope you have a great time in Atlanta!

  32. December 11, 2006

    E

Never had Grenache Blanc, sounds like fun.

QOD: well, not the Drappier since it’s GONE! So let’s make it the Moncuit instead.

Oh, and here’s Kevin Mitchell, in annoying GIF format:

    Great episode.
I had been thinking along the champagne route for New Year’s until yesterday afternoon, when a quick stop in a local San Diego wine store for a Christmas party cheapo turned into a cool opportunity. Apparently, a wine collector up the coast had expereicned a pallette shift from New World to Old World, and was in the process of unloading his entire California / Oregon world-class holdings, most going back to the early 90s, all perfectly cellared. I had missed the big last-minute sale, but one of the employees mentioned a few boxes of great stuff were left, and let me dig through the unclaimed stuff in the kitchen. Among other bottles, including a 2001 Ken Wright Guadalupe Vineyard Pinot, I found a 1994 Chateau Montelena Estate Napa Valley Cab. My wife is a little mad about the price, but it’s what we’ll be popping open Dec. 31. (She should just be relieved I didn’t scoop up the two dozen or so older Cayuse bottles going for $200+….)

  34. December 11, 2006

    David Canada

I’ll be having some Deutz and some 2001 Mitolo GAM. Love the show.

Gary, loved the grenache episode. Recently, I bought theYalumba bush vine 2004 grenache-excellent and about 15 bones
For new years, will start with gewurztraminers with chinese food, then 2 champagnes 1)Duval-Leroy NV brut and 2)Taittinger Comtes De Champagne 1996 Blanc De Blanc

  36. December 11, 2006

    Hi Gary,
Nice to see you do a set of Grenache. Nice change of pace.
Also, Great to see a Bonny Doon wine. They make some nice wines at great prices. Their wines are always interesting.
As for the New Year, likely go with a Moscato d’Asti, a light sparking wine with a great taste.

  37. December 11, 2006

    QOTD:

I was reorganizing my cellar this weekend and ran across three 1999 Alain Michelot Nuits St. Georges Les Chaignots 1er Crus that I hadn’t logged into CellarTracker (and therefore had forgotten I owned). No one else on CT has any bottles, so I have no guidance as to whether it’s in its drinking window. Is anyone out there familiar with this wine and able to offer some advice? I figured I’d give one a try on New Years.

I had a 1981 or 1982 Le Roy Nuit St. Georges at La Tour d’Argent in 2001 and it was the wine that got me into this hobby. I’m still trying to re-create that experience!

  38. December 11, 2006

    Eric

Nice episode. I have yet to try a Grenache. Something to add to my ever growing list.

QOD: For New Years, I’ll be drinking Fort, which is a really big beer from Dogfish Head, then maybe some Taylor Fladgate 20 year old tawny, only because I haven’t been able to find any 30 or 40 year old to splurge on.

Have you ever tried a Jacob’s Creek sparkling wine? It’s 20% Pinot Noir 80% Chardonnay, which I guess is opposite of what people usually do. We’re thinking of having it for our wedding toast, since it’s the best we’ve tried so far in the $10 and under range. It’s really only the 4th sparkling wine/Champagne I’ve ever had… sorta new to it.

I was dissapointed to hear that Neyers no longer makes their Hudson Vineyard Grenache. It was one of my favorite G’s. Dec. 31 is looking like ‘88 Salon and ‘97 Far Niente Cab friends have been wanting to try. Will also have something spur of the moment.

Gary, that was an awesome catch by the left fielder. I went to see him play many times back in the day when Dusty Baker was the 3rd base coach and Roger Craig was the manager for the Giants and not a running back for the 49ers. I was a huge fan of that team. Once, I even saw a fan barehand catch a ball off his bat while holding a baby in his other hand. Amazing!

ML, you must be Canadian eh? Gary, love the sweater! Was that a Fathers Day present? Not a big Grenache fan. QOTD for Gary…. I’ve noticed you like to empty your empty glass into the spit bucket before tasting, Whats that all about??? :-)

I like to consider myself a modified lurker…
G.V., I hope our beloved JETS win next week, I cant take seeing you like this. A low energy, almost depressed sight. I’m so upset. It kills me to see you like this. I should drive down to NJ and slap you a couple of times before your flight. I hope you get a little Vaynitude adjustment before you go on air. I love you anyway. Bummed or not, your still the best.
    QOTD….Why Prosecco of course.

  48. December 11, 2006

Thanks for doing Grenache Gary, even if your selections were towards a style that doesn’t do the grape justice. Next time throw in a Rayas and watch it trash all the other wines.

I’ve been lurking since Thanksgiving. Can’t get enough so I started watching old episodes.

Been Lurkin for a while now… actually a long time! Hahaha…

What I’m drinking for New Years? Since I’ll be out partying up, it probably won’t be sparkly. It’ll probably some kind of liquor.

Btw, great job with the Grenache. I love grenache and I’m very happy you did an episode on it.

    hey Gary, cool episode!

QOTD: for New Year’s, I have a Frank Family Blanc de Noirs sparkling that I’ve had tucked way… I am way more of a red fan than sparkling so I’m hoping to have something new and nice to welcome in the new year.

QOTD: Buying a case of Mumm Napa Blanc de Noirs. Yes, it pales in comparison to the wonderful choices I see here, but I will have a houseful of drunk friends, so I had to show some restraint. I gotta admit though, I love the stuff…

    Gary,

You are a rock. I was not expecting to see you tonight.

QOD: I will be popping whatever Champagne wins the CHAMPAGNE SHOW-DOWN (or sounds the best to my taste), when you pit grower champagnes vs. big-name brands in a blind tasting (hint hint).

Have a good trip in Atlanta!

nice, i love your videos man, i’ve been checking out this and WL every single day since i discovered them about a week ago. Just bummed that the “tuesday tasting” video will not be up until thursday. I just got my 6 wines today and was hoping to do this wed. but guess it will have to wait till january (the next time i’ll have enough time to do it.). Also i wont be drinking anything this new years. I’ll be at work watching wine library tv, pissed off wishing i was off work drinking.

    Love the shows Gary!

The wife and I are going big this New Years, we will be opening one of the following: ‘96 Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame or ‘88 Pol Roger Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill. Mmmmmmmmmm…..

GV- nice surprise to see the episode when I got home from work, after you posted yesterday no show- thx

New Years? I’ll be drinking the Dogfish Fort, like Eric above, and the Nino Franco Prosecco di Valdobbiadene Rustico; then it depends on what we eat, probably rib eye, so maybe ‘02 Torbreck The Steading or Francis Tannahill Mason Dixon Syrah

I knew that Grenache was the most planted red grape in Spain (Airen being the most planted, red or white), but when did Grenache overtake Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon as the most planted grape worldwide?

  62. December 12, 2006

    eugene

Great episode. I love Grenache and have it often. Mostly from Spain and Southern Rhone.

QOTD: I already have a bottle of Perrier Juet Grand Brut, which I got on sale and it has very nice packaging (metal tube) and a half bottle of Veuve Clicot as a backup.

I am still hoping to buy a grower champagne (real recoltant stuff) or a sparkler from Loire or Alsace-those I find quite nice too.

If I do get the real stuff on time, the Juet and Clicot will end up as gifts.

    Gary,
    great job in Atalanta today!

You hit your stride about midway through, and really came across well. Good to hear WLTV is going global. What is the viewership up to now?

I thought the woman was going to have a heart attack when you said that some wine smells like urinals at a carnival.

  73. December 12, 2006

    Matthew L

Nice episode Gary. I’ve always had Grenache…and some other grape. I’ve never had it as a stand alone, so I’m very interested to give them a try.

QOTD: ? Hmmmm ? I haven’t decided, but I was contemplating ordering a bottle of Brown Estate Zinfandel from WL. I learned about this producer years ago from an article in Wine Spectator, and have always wanted to try the Zin. You reviewed the wine in episode #25, and spoke very highly about the bottle.

    Safe travels to ATL.

  74. December 12, 2006

Yep…it WAS me. I’m the reason the Jets lost. Sorry. I picked the Bills in my football pool, cause I thought they’d win.

My fault…and then the Bears had to go and win. Sorry man…great episode though and have a safe flight. See you later. Oh ya, QOD: I don’t know. I don’t plan that far ahead. I don’t like getting wasted, so I’ll have some wine, maybe Champagne. I’ll probably do what I normally do and that’s hang out at home with my wife, or we’ll go to our friend’s house and just have a relaxing eveing. OK, see you later,

So you come to my home town and I miss the TV show? Guess I’m going to have to start visiting more often. Good show. Don’t think I have tried Grenache’s before. I am a new to wine drinking world and am only now starting to buy wines breaking the $11 barrier. So you’ll understand why the Twenty Row Cab is baiting me. Hey, and this is my first post. So wow. I’m setting records everywhere. Right now for New Years, we have a bottle of Bordeaux a relative brought back from France. It’s 1986 vintage so if it isn’t vinegar, it should be good.

Good stuff. I stumbled upon your blog through the Coturri site, good stuff bro. I alway get pissed off when I hear people popping Champagne corks at midnight, C’mon thats so cliche. I will be starting out w/some Schramsberg Blanc de Noir 2002(about 7 pm), followed by Benton Lane pinot noir, some Ridge and Coturri zins and maybe a late harvest vignioli di santo Stefano. Pair each wine w/tapas and roll in the new year w/ family and friends.

nice episode on grenache!! i am a big old world grenache fan, but i have found that this style needs the most time to open in a decanter (for younger wines) than any other varietal i have had.. i have opened some beautiful old world grenache to find them to be just ok, but later in the night just have blossomed in the glass!! new world grenache is not my thing tho…gets a little too baked, jammy, and reduced for me…

some people have already mentioned, but as of my last check, grenache is the most planted red in the world….but airen (white) is the most planted overall.

  82. December 14, 2006

    Mitch

As much as I love grenache, I can’t say much for Australia’s efforts. Too ripe and one-dimensional. Clarendon Hills was highly hyped stateside for quite a few years, mostly due to huge scores from Mr. Parker, but now it seems most wine enthusiasts have come to the conclusion that the Clarendon Hills wines are overrated and over-priced. Burge Family makes a very good grenache which they call Garnacha, the Spanish name. Noon Eclipse is worth trying.
There are some exciting grenaches coming out of California from the likes of Alban, Unti, Beckmen, SQN, Kenneth-Crawford, Kaena, Shadow Canyon, and more. Alban leads the way. It seems that with California’s warm climate, blending in some syrah is key for structure and complexity.
New Years Eve I will be drinking De Meric Grande Reserve Sous Bois Brut, 2000 Launois Special Club, Launois “Cuvee Reserve” Brut Blanc de Blancs, Marguet Pere & Fils ‘Cuvee Reserve’ Brut and Tarlant Brut Reserve Champagne, and whatever else our friends may bring. I imagine New Years Day I will be drinking water and coffee.

What am I drinking for New Year’s you ask…I am drinking a bottle of Veuve Clicquot. I brought a few bottles with me when I was in Reims this past summer. I actually had some on Christmas day too. I think I could enjoy it weekly…too bad my pocketbook can’t!

New Year’s? Well I drank a nice Kabinett Riesling for July 4th! Great episode. Love Grenache because its an easy drinking wine without the round flabby mouthfeel of a cheap Merlot. Favorites Grenaches are Unti and Tablas Creek!

I just had my first Grenache as I rewatch this episode. It’s a 2005 Las Rocas de San Alejandro Garnacha Calatayud from Spain which I picked up for $13. The cork was covered with a soft black plastic. I never saw that before. I wasn’t big on it. It reminded me of zin. Too much black pepper and too much alcohol.
