Introspective VaynerChuk can’t forget the words of Sam Zen while he’s tasting the Bonny Doon.

slip that audio track back into place.. although it was pretty hilarious having it play over yourself.

Nice ep — vast majority of my Chenin Blanc experience is with Vouvray Demi Sec, so interesting to see the variety of wines made with it — obviously quite a versatile grape. The color on that Joly was unbelievable!

LOL – Sam Zen made you regurgitate your words. Gary when I drink a nice bottle of wine it makes me.. feel guilty that I didn’t use a glass.

QOD – makes me feel great and anxious because I want it to last and last and last…..:)

As far as the Sam Zen comment – jury might still be out, it is hard to see the shirt itself and the design on the website, you should allow the picture to be blown up…..also, a couple colors other than black would be nice….but I am getting picky!

    Thanks,

I am a very very long time lurker. I have lurked when you didn’t have the TV show or a maybe even a website site. I used to go to the GREASE MONKEY and walk over to the old store buy and lurk. Its kinda funny but no matter how thing change ( your technology ), I’m still doing the same thing. I get a kick and sometimes a chuckle from your whacky descriptions of the nose and taste of the wines on WLTV.

Sorry, I forgot, got caught up in the QOTD.

Gary, excellent show. I love it when you bring out a varietal that isn’t known as well as it should be by enough people.

  51. December 13, 2006

    good old ludwig van

Gary, when you say the wine has been open X hours, do you just pop the cork and let them breathe in the bottle? Or, do you decant and then pour them back in the bottle before the show? I am always looking for breathing/decanting advice, so knowing this would help me.

Also, even the champagne was open that long? You seemed surprised it didn’t have many bubbles, but I would have thought that would be expected if it had been open a couple hours.

Maybe you could answer in a future episode for your buddy good old ludwig van. Thanks.

As a long time Fin fan, I can’t back the Jets but you’re ok anyway Gary. Not much of a white wine fan yet but your mention of sushi with Raats caught my attention. I may have to bypass the saki next time. And hey! My second post in a week! I’m on a roll (or maki).

When I drink a nice bottle of wine it makes me feel… hmm. Well it makes me feel old school and closer to earth. That may sound strange I guess but it gives me more of a reaching back feeling. Can’t really explain it but a good bottle of wine makes me feel closer to understanding the grower and the soil. It’ a lot different than beers or spirits which can be made anywhere. So I feel more a part of a community.

Had many very enjoyable Loire Valley Chenin ….all styles from dry to sweet to petillante. One I enjoy from California is the Pine Ridge Viognier / Chenin Blanc … Have had several vintages and this one I consider a real value choice .. very consistent… a crowd pleaser

When I drink a nice bottle of wine … it makes me … think of some of the best times in my life!

I’ve always thought of Chenin Blanc as “the little wine that could” (specifically, Chappellet Chenin Blanc).

Two contest questions: 1) Can you enter more than once?!, and 2) Is the trip for one or two people?!

    QOD: …share it with someone…

Thanks, Gary, for another terrific episode. (See you CA, baby!!)

    Ken

    Gary,
Good Old Ludwig Van has a point. Who in their right mind leaves a bubbly open for so long? And when you decant (well, whites are of less consequence) do you then pour them back into the bottle? The ‘Old World’, so called ( by D. Rumsfeld?), takes a hit when you don’t open finer examples, as in this episode, of Chenin Blanc. Methinks the ‘New World’, the tide of Parkeresque dispeptic fantasy wines where even a deceased squirrel after being resurrected from hot gravel and soaked in oak chips could garner a 96, perhaps he, Mr. Parker, may have made as yet unsuspected inroads into your preferred flavor profile. Just as with the Hotlanta TV interview, wherein French wines, read ‘Old World’, were loaded with ‘dirt and worms’, your choice of Chenins was unfocused. Take more time and care. We want to learn, not just take sides.

  61. December 13, 2006

    chayut

    Great episode Gary.

I’ve seen some ice wines from New Zealand are made from Chenin Blanc. Maybe you should have an episode on NZ ice wine sometimes. Also, can you do an episode on Valpolicella? I have had an Allegrini Valpolicella 2003 and I think it’s pretty good.

Another fabulous episode, topped off by quite a toss (the cork that is).

I enjoyed learning about Chenin Blanc. I will pick up a bottle the next time I order. You have done this for me for several other wines (sparkling wines, Sancerre, etc)- get me out of my comfort zone and make me try new things that expand my horizon and add to the enjoyment of wine.

QOTD- … satisfied. The hunt for excellent wine is part of the fun. The suspense of the first pour, swirl, sniff, and then the taste is part of the enjoyment. And when you hit one out of the park and really enjoy a bottle, I feel like I won the game that day.

What’s that I hear, rumbling in the distance?

    I think it’s the long-awaited Cheninathon!

Extra bonus points for something I ain’t never seen before (Savennieres), talkin’ smack and tossin’ corks and thoroughly brightening the day.

QOD: it makes me want to remember it. Forever. Because I’m probably going to go and try something else I haven’t had yet.

    Lurker – no more!

Great show at least for the cork toss!! Way to stick the landing, Gary!
I’m not a huge Chenin Blanc fan, though. I’d rather have a sharp New Zealand sauvignon blanc.

QOTD-”sad” that I finished the bottle again if my wife doesn’t care to partake,
or “glad” that I shared a terrific wine with friends and/or spouse,
or like a “Vayniac” if I start to describe the nose or taste of chocolate, cream de cassis,
    raspberry pie and burnt cedar!!

Nice Vaynergag on the too big sip!!

Since I’m not a lurker anymore, now will you answer my e-mails?

Question of the day…. what else but horny….

BTW nice episode I love Vouvrays. Disappointed in the Foreau since I had some profound and excellent demi-sec and moulleaux. It would be interesting to see a couple of Foreau against Huet. I was in Chapel Hill this weekend and saw the Foreau in a College coffee shop which surprised me. Its great that you are getting into some tastings other than the usual suspects.

  76. December 13, 2006

    Gary,

Another great episode. I can’t believe that you mentioned Hong Kong for the first time on your show. Thanks.

I love Chenin Blancs. Unfortunately, the pickings are verrrrrrrrrrrry slim in Hong Kong. We get Foreau and Joly but not much else.

Since you mentioned Loire Valley, any chance you can do an episode on Didier Dagueneau’s(sp ??)Silex, Pur Sang etc….

Still watching everyday from Hong Kong.

  77. December 13, 2006

    Dan C.

Gary- Almost a shout out for me. Thanks. I bugged you to throw left-handed at the camera for awhile in my comments and today you said “that’s what you want” when you very accurately hit the camera left-handed. You’ve got it workin’.

QOD- I feel…”like having more” hey as you, and Parker, say, wine is primarily a form of enjoyment

I still have many wines to try, but I have been drinking some Chenin Blanc and it is a huge variety of flavors. I’m not sure what grape to compare it to in terms of versatility…anyway, great show and you’re gonna win in Minnesota Sunday.

    Regards, Dan C.

Okay….Yo…I get the point! As for today’s episode, not bad. Chenin-Blanc can be a “mystey grab bag” in the tastings I do with it, however always there to surprise me. I have to agree with the vayniacs!!…blow up the T-Shirt dude!! From the distance I see it from, it looks like some sort of cover for “High Times” or better yet a canned vegtable advertisement. Now I know the shirt is way better than that, but eh?? Can we can an EXTREME CLOSE-UP here? Anyways…when I open a bottle of wine that I love it makes me want to parlay on the JETS!!..lol. Now but really…makes me want to not be so damn quick to drink it and enjoy the bottle, and if I am with somebody, I’m switching them onto something like Yellowtail, and I’m running for the hills with that bottle!! Go YANKS!!!!!…I know it’s early…buy I’m already prepping for the trash talk’n!!

    Gary,
Nice job, and good choice as the Chenin Blanc is a little less well know then the usual Pinot Gris or the ubiquitous chardonnay. Its quite comparable to a Riesling. I recently picked up the Bonny Doon CB and have it in the refrigerator waiting to try.
As for the Question of the day: ….makes me smile and then reflective the life, especially the little things, can be “good” at times.

Ahhh, it’s late out here. OK, firstly, the comment where you say the ‘Wicked Witch of the West stuck a bunch of bitter, disgusting flavors in there…” with “wild lush apple” is just the BEST! THAT’s why we love you, Gary. How better to educate than using examples everyone understands!?! Second, QOD. “When I drink a nice bottle of wine, it makes me”…SO VERY THANKFUL that I love wine. It’s the nectar of the gods. Whether we like it or not, it’s elegant and sophisticated…it is what it is.

QOTD: It makes me grin and show the world my purple teeth. Actually, I like a good white too, but the effect on the dentition isn’t quite so dramatic.

Good show. I’m surprised you didn’t include a late-harvest dessert-style Chenin Blanc, such as a Delesvaux or something. Those are my favorites, but I have had several versions of Chenins that I like. Definitely an underappreciated grape.

  96. December 14, 2006

What’s with the number, the 249 countdown thing? Need to ask, as I’m feeling like I’m missing something ;-)

My only regret about this episode is that the 89pts/25$ might scare people away from trying out Savennieres. These wines are truly unique, and Nicholas Joly is THE wine grower of the appellation. Bear in mind that this is not one of his finest cuvées. Bear in mind also that Savennieres often need 5-10 years of aging before showing their full potential (2003 IS different and can be enjoyed younger becasue of the extraordinary hot summer of 03). I agree with Gary V that Savennieres are strictly food-wines – a great alternative to a bone dry, petroleum nosed alsacian Riesling. Apple and Chenin Blanc are a great pairing.

Whats up Gary I have been a Lurker and I didnt want to get banned today LOL. I have been loving this and learning quite a lot about wine. It makes me want to give some of the white wines a try. After todays episode I will go buy some white.

I’m not a big fan of Chenin Blanc, but I’m interested to try the Joly Savennieres.

QOTD: When I drink a nice bottle of wine it makes me feel the same way I do when my Raiders win a football game: satisfied, happy, content. Fortunately, I’ve had many bottles of good wine this seasons, because I’m not going to get that feeling from my 2-11 Raiders! Gary, your Jets can look forward to a win on New Years eve.

    Nice on CNBC!

By the way, I have a question. What do the numbers mean? Yesterday, you said 2 5 0 and said, “You know what I mean.” I don’t. Somebody enlighten me. Based on today’s episode, I’m guessing it’s how long the wines have been open. True?

When I drink a nice bottle of wine it makes me feel friendly and smart and thoughtful and poetic and dreamy and romantic and emotional and pensive and elegiac and philosophical and expressive and quixotic and lyrical and deep and profound and meditative and occasionally, given the right set of circumstances, horny. ;)

Gary, you profess your like of Bonny Doon but never seem to rate their wines highly. Which one of their wines do you actually like? Chenins for me are go to wines especially Saviennes and Vouvrays. I haven’t been that impressed with CA efforts but will have to rtry South Africa. Decided to get a t-shirt before I leave for X-mas/Channukah break to aloha-land. May have to do a video from Hawaii with my Vyniac t-shirt.

Great show Gary…it’s nice when you throw a bone to the lesser known wines, like the Vouvrey sparkling wine…I had no idea. I’ll seek one out, regardless of the 85 point pass, I’m curious.

QOD: When I drink a nice bottle of wine it makes me feel…

Relaxed and warm. When it’s a kick-butt bottle of something that I have high expectations for AND it delivers, and I have it in the right setting with it being decanted for the right amount of time, I just slowly enjoy it. I can smell it forever, and each taste just lingers and lingers. That’s the best quality of a good wine. Your whole body enjoys it.

OK…I think your Jets will beat Minnesota. So, congrats ahead of time.
    See you later,

QOTD. These days it’s a combination of things. Happy that it’s pleasing my palate, and then curious as to what specifically it is about this wine that I am enjoying. As with others, sometimes disappointed that it was my only bottle of the wine. Fun show as always. Gary,

A friend spotted the segment on CNBC and told me about your web-site. He said you guys really had it going on. I love, love, love the TV Series. I am in the process of opening a Wine Boutique and Tasting Room in So. California and will be checking in with you from time to time in order to improve my Wine Knowledge. Hope you don’t mind, I don’t think we’ll be direct competitors.

Been lurking as I had to catch up after the Europe trip. In Spain the wine was great and cheap at every meal, especially nice with the ham they carved at the table. For some reason I ended up drinking cognac my last night in Madrid, so I currently have a distaste for Spanish Disco. In Germany I tried to stay with local wine but they offered such nice South African bottles at great prices that I ended up drinking Jagermeister. And in Amsterdam we drank French at dinner, but closed the night always with Dutch beer.

QON: why is drinking so much more fun in Europe?

When I drink a nice bottle of wine it makes me appreciate how fortunate I am. Cheers.

Gary, once in a while could you remember that some of us are brand new to wines, tasting and wine talk. I know that I am not the only one that sometimes has no idea of what you are talking about. But I sure am learing a lot.

QOTD: Get way too excited, in a couple of different ways. The one I can write about here involves me spending a freakishly long time time on the internet researching the wine, then adding it (along with the varietal, producer, country of origin, price, and my own tasting notes) to an admittedly geeky list I keep of every wine that I’ve ever tasted. The other one—- I’m pretty sure no one wants to hear about.

Great episode, Gary. I haven’t tried very much chenin blanc because of bad memories of Almaden and Paul Masson (sp?) back in the day. I really have liked several Vouvreys and didn’t even know that they were chenin blanc, so that’s a bit of an eye opener.

I’ve been a lurker since ep. # 119, and this is my first post, (found you on YouTube BTW) since then I’ve been bouncing around to various episodes trying to catch up.

I’ll post more latter, but for now, my offierings to the wine gods.

First, clip from a BBC show called Posh Nosh. (Until your show, I just thought it was a joke to use “Gasoline” as way to describe wine.)

winelibrary tv rocks! look forward to watching this show everyday. Now that I’m no longer a “lurker”, I wanted to post a question…although it has nothing to do with chenic blanc. What are some favorite house reds out there? I mean, I love to drink the $50 – $75 wines as much as anyone, but I can’t do that everyday when I get home from work. Right now, I’ve got a few red favorites that I love to drink but don’t have to empty the wallet to buy…they are in order of QPR: (a) McManis Cab (’05 – $7.99/bottle), (b) Waterstone Cab (’03 & ‘04 — $19/bottle), Tablas Creek, Côtes de Tablas (’05 – $18/bottle). Also, I’m curious how my tastes are advancing and wonder what the man, Gary V., thinks about these wines? Keep pouring…

Gary, your energy today was contagious! Could ya’ tell by my answer to your QOD? Too bad I’m a day (or two) late and a dollar (or two) short on my WLTV episodes. Sorry – work has been CRAZY and I haven’t been able to get my daily dose of WLTV. I doing the WLTV mini series today before I head into work. Thanks Gary for covering a varietal that’s under-rated and really off most wine-radars. Chappellet in the Napa Valley does a beautiful chenin blanc, but one has to wonder– they sell it for about $12 a bottle, so how much longer will any CA producers of quality chenin blanc hang on, when they are selling chardonnay at $30-45+ and cabs at $40-75+

First time poster Gary. Great website.

I have to get some of that Raat’s for my wife. She grew chard-fatigued and we were looking for other whites for her (and myself) to drink. Viognier has fit that bill for her, but that Chenin Blanc fits the flavor profile that I think she would like.

    Keep up the great work!

Gary nice episode, chenin is definitely one of the classic varietal’s you seem to hear about the least.
Another wine you never hear about is vin jaune. That would be a fun episode to see. Or one where you taste a bunch of the few charbono’s out there.
