    Gary,

Another great episode. I totally agree with your scoring on Chateau Sansonnet. I have had this wine on several ocassions with consistent notes.

In the words of tonights Scrubs episode..Who are you and what have you done with SS Chris?

Smiling Pelican, I think some of the boys were a little hard on you…I think it fair to ask questions, particularly if you are new to Gary & WLTV. As you watch episodes, your worries will quickly fade away. I also suggest that you watch Ep. #99, where he tackles this issue HEAD ON (you may want to read the comments section of the Ep #96 where a little comment skirmish erupted between two Viewers, Derek and some guy Chris Stanisci, regarding Gary’s integrity and his rating of one of the wines).

I would also suggest watching Episodes 57 & 58, this is when Gary came back after a long break and kind of re-lauched WLTV. He talks about being wooed by television networks, etc., but decided not to go that route because of the fact that he couldn’t be brutally honest. If you go back and watch these 3 episodes, please leave me a message on the Forum (you can PM me or my email is available). Or you can start a new thread…”Smiling Pelican is reformed…now a True VaynIAC!!”.

    Gary,

I love your show. I’m really interested in wine and love tasting new things. As a super-poor college guy, do you have any recommendations to develop a palette and taste a wide variety of wines on a budget? Thanks!

PS – just checked out the “other wine TV website”….I use quotes because it was like watching the teacher in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off call role…BORING! seriously..speaking of the folks w/ sticks up their butts..sheesh.

Love the show. As a guy just getting into wine, it’s great to see someone approach wines with personality and fun.

    Genghis,
Don’t rush her into it. Let her find out what she likes in whites, if thats her style then go for the reds. Don’t think red is the only worthwile type.

But, if you insist, get some good pinot down her throat and maybe some nice merlot, not the “cheap” stuff. (”cheap” not synonymous with inexpensive) Lambrusco tastes like riesling too…wierd.

Cornell University School of Hotel Administration offered Wine Tasting 101 for the rest of the Univ, not going into Hotel. It was great! Every Wed at 4:30 tasting 4 wines, then heading into Collegetown to really get hammered. I remember this one young, pretty Asian woman remarking that a white wine from the Loire reminded her of fresh leechees! And I’ve enjoyed wine ever since. Now even more w/ GV & WLTV.

QOTD – What wine reminds you of your college days?

    Kahuna,

I remember my 1st Mad Dog 20/20 like it was yesterday. It’s the next 100 or so that i’m fuzzy on! AAHHH…. College.. Good Times!!!!!!!

    Genghis-
Wine and Dinner man you kids have it made today! but if your over 21 I guess your not a kid anymore-I never felt like I was an adult in college dont know why- but I am glad we have some young blood tuning in. Its the speed of drinking the Boonesfarm that makes up for the alcohol-

anyway good luck -when i first started drinking wine that I had to buy I would only drink Chianti- I hated Cabs – I thought they tasted like eating a piece of bark- now some 10+ years later Cabs are what I mostly drink

  14. December 14, 2006

    Genghis

Kahuna: Thanks! I’ll give that wine a look.

And oh, we booze. But it’s sort of hard to be like “have this whiskey sour” with dinner. Now that we can legally drink in public, it seems like the right time to start moving on to Adult alcohol.

Also, if you’re looking to get her smashed, Boonesfarm is like, 5% ABV, so it wouldn’t be worth it. Especially knowing you’re drinking “apple wine byproduct” as the label says.

    What. The. Hell.

Good episode. I did check out that Wine Taste TV thing, and while I agree it doesn’t cut it for us Vayniacs, there is something to be said for the paucity of feminine input in the wine world. I think in one of the episodes she descibed a “very sexy wine” as smelling like a man who just ran a mile (not four miles). These type of gender-specific comparisons are good, I think – how would a man describe a “sexy” wine? Or a “masculine” wine? Would a male taster even use the term “masculine”? Ultimately, wine is all about the senses, and senses are, oh gee, “sensual”. And men are often pretty lousy at explaining and describing the sensual. In other words – the Wine Taste TV lady may be dull, but at least she’s a woman, and a little bit of feminine perspective is what the wine world could use right about now. Right message, wrong messenger? (May I nominate my wife, a woman whose gift at wine beats mine by a country mile?)

    KAHUNA

    Genghis,
I would start her with some late harvest reds like the Tensley that WL has now- this way it will still be on the sweet side but she will be able to identify with the Syrah grape and it will still be a traditional wine unlike a port- http://winelibrary.com/reviewwine.asp?item=29181

Dude what the hell, when I was in college(best 8 years of my life) I was dumping Vodka City in Hi-C down my girls throat- your girlfriend is getting spoiled way to young in life- Get her some Mad Dog, Boonesfarm and Ripple-

    Genghis

Hey, great show. I’m trying to get my dorm hooked, we’ll see how it goes.

I have a question though: I’m trying to get my girlfriend into wine, but so far it’s taken Tawny Ports and Rieslings / Gewürztraminers to get her to actively drink it instead of just tolerate what I offer. Is there anything in the red category that you’d suggest as a starting point? Any good reds with some complexity that you’d nominate for white-lovers?

    Thanks.

I love this site Gary!…I have in less than a week become an official Vayniac. I really appreciate the fact that you remind people to explore what they like and not worry about what others think! In my opinion Gary you are truly Brillant! Smile…

I am looking forward to watching this episode again with some friends and the 4-pak I picked up in the store yesterday . . . especially after watching today’s episode!

In regards to all the comments on the CNBC piece; I am in sales. I believe any salesperson can sell anything to anybody at least once. But, to have a loyal fan-base like Gary has takes a person who truly believes in what he or she does. Gary works ridiculous amounts of hours, even reading and answering e-mails in the wee hours of the morning. That doesn’t happen with someone just wanting to be the top salesperson in the world — that comes from having a passion about something. Also, with all these unrehearsed and uncut episodes of WLTV for everyone to see — it would be nearly impossible to hide a false agenda. People, we are indeed fortunate to have found someone like Gary Vaynerchuck, and that he decided to follow his passions. Gary – your mom and dad should be amazingly proud!

Pelican was just bringing up a point- thats all- Gary just gave me a Pazz on a $100+ dollar of wine today in person I know where he stands- If you cut and sliced all the times Gary didnt agree with Robert Parker you would think he thought Robert Parker was a dope- As followers of WL and WLTV we know he says he loves Robert Parker and respects him but if you dont see that part then why not ask the question-

We know he does it out of love but when you see clips on a financial show-and that is what MSNBC is and the host asks a question like that well thats the way it goes.

Brandon defends Gary like no other which is great because he speaks for all of us Vayniacs- but as this blog grows and Gary’s show grows – so will the questions

I too make a living selling something I love but yes I could sell anything also.

Ok, pretty confident I made no point at all- but anyway Gary loves wine and the business of wine and we love that little funky bast_rd for it!
