As the week gets hectic and I find it harder to get stuff done I just wanted to take a minute and reflect.

What a great time you have given me (us) this year Gary. After 150 episodes and the Vaynernation growing it is fun to remember that first Amon Ra Decanter episode (#18) that hooked me into being the crazy Vayniac that I am.

I felt like such a wine newbie only 9 months ago and I have learned so much in such a brief time. I owe it all to you and the rest of the Vayniacs.

So Gary…to you and your family…Thanks for going so hard at it for 9 months.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you, the crew, and your family!

    And Vayniacs (original and new)…
Thanks for all of your input into my questions and my comments. I hope I have given back to you half as much as you have given me!
Merry Christmas, I hope all of you have a HAPPY day and a marvelous 2007!

Gary – Here’s a link to some tips for getting Beyonce’s “Irreplaceable” out of your head. The hints are really for an annoying song, but you can probably apply the same principles to a song you love, or any song that’s stuck in your head.

The only beard you’ll be wearing is the fake Santa Claus white rag in your dreams!
That stinky smell of sardines that the fins will bring into town on St. Nick’s birthday is just about as fishy as your playoff predictions. Just because they wear green doesn’t mean the you’ll be picking out any four leaf clovers under a rainbow my friend!

    Gary,

For getting a song out of your head, I recommend nobody more highly than Lily Allen. I won’t say that she’s the greatest musician alive or anything like that, but her music is seriously catchy and a lot of fun. Her new album is called Alright, Still, and it’s not released in the U.S. yet, but you can listen to her on her myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/lilymusic Of the songs she currently has posted, I think “Everything’s Just Wonderful” would probably be the most effective for chasing other stuff out of your head. Enjoy!

Great episode Gary, QOTD: I download the episode so I can watch it again and again without putting a strain on your bandwidth.

Wish I could have popped open a couple of sparkling wines myself, but I got the good old wisdom teeth out today, the Tylenol 3 is doing wonders. Gives me a good while to catch up on back episodes.

Gary my question for you is: What do you do with those open bottles of sparkling wine (or any bottles) after the show?

qod: I watch download WLTV through iTunes so that it automatically loads on my iPod and so most episodes are stored in the same place. Whenever there’s a problem w/ iTunes I download directly from the site instead, but I don’t like to because iTunes refuses to store the episodes with the rest of my podcasts when I download them that way.

    Gary,
Yeah I agree that Cliquot is a bit over rated. I’ll take the Soligo over it anyday.
It was funny you mentioned WLTV users at 499 cuz I saw that stat earlier today and thought you’d mention it. QOTD – just d/l it from the web site. Thanks again for all the hard work.

QOD: I used to watch WLTV in itunes but found that it was updating about a day behind.. it wasn’t FAST enough! Around 4:30pm or so I start refreshing the webpage to get the new episode. You threw me off today GV, had to wait till after dinner.

I can understand why tho.. great episode! It was good to hear you describe how you view “real” champanges. Bubbles in the Hizzie for EVAH!

QOTD-I watch WLTV on my Mac laptop – after dinner – while sipping a glass of red wine (tonight it’s a pinot noir, but often a shiraz or cab or zin) via my wireless cable modem. Usually my wife is next to me wondering why I am such a Vayniac, watching all these episodes about wine!
Thanks for doing all this Gary. You are hugely popular in this household, and the word is getting out…

    GregK

I watch WLTV on the web site using QuickTime viewer.

  48. December 20, 2006

    SS Chris

I usually watch them at night on my wireless laptop. Sometimes, I read the comments first (like I just did) to see what up. This is the worst part of doing the SS…I can’t just really watch the episode, I need to transcribe…..and 9 wines….this will take an hour. Your killing me Gary.

Just kidding (not about the hour)….I happily do this….love WLTV and VaynerNATION….ROCK ON, GaryV!!!!!

  49. December 20, 2006

    James H

    Hey guys.

I’m notified of new episodes via my RSS reader, and then watch on the site itself. Right now I’m sipping some 2004 Elderton Shiraz, and munching on a tuna sandwich. AWESOME COMBO!

Gary, thanks for doing this episode. I have wanted to try more champagne since you recommended the Drappier Signature, and I concurred that it was very good. I am looking forward to trying a few more and will place an order as soon as I hear back from you on my private e-mail to you.

As to the QOD, I usually like to download the episodes to I-Tunes. This way I can watch them at my leisure, and even take them with me. Unfortunately, for some reason episode 147 and now, episode 151 never downloaded to I-Tunes. My other podcasts downloaded both days, so it seems to be limited to WLTV podcasts only. Perhaps one of your IT people can look into this?

Boy, do I even have enough time to grow some stubble? Oh, and good to finally understand what Jason Kidd and ‘where the US Champagne market will be in 10 years’ have in common!

Gary, GREAT, GREAT episode….I WILL be trying the 2 vintage sparklers!! thanks!!

How’s your new phone…did it survive?

Prestige cuvees: Salon, Vilmart, Gratien, Jean Milan, the finest Cattier, Pierre Peters, Bonnaire, J. Selosse, Pol Roger (cuvee Sir Winston Churchill), Comte Audoin De Dampierre, Ruinart, the list is so obscenley long its funny. Four thousand Champagne producers and what do we get: Tattinger, Pommery, Henriot, Roederer, Veuve Cliquoit, Moet, their low end swill. Such pretty bottles. Time for importers to step up their game. If winexpo.com can do it (personal relation) , if hi-timewines can do it (same) , if dandm.com can do it (ditto), then so can winelibrary. Praise for the Spanish Cavas. Spot on. Curse the Sophia: ( Coppola will not let his daughter fail even if it requires low-tech string and tape, as long bare minimum of pleasure, like her, is assured.) Gary, with all due respect, let the Vaynernation know of Champagne beyond winelibrary’s scope. Your enthusiasm has been duly noted. Your fine palate, envied. What is missing is a stirring tale of the riches to be found far beyond where your store has gone. What’s more important, Champagne or local markets?

  61. December 21, 2006

    mjen

QOD I watch the show on your website, usually in the morning with coffee

  62. December 21, 2006

    wey

Gary, you rock! I was hoping for another Champagne episode. I watched the other sparkling episodes the day before yesterday and got myself a very nice cava & champagne yesterday (in my new rocking cool champagne glasses) :)

Anyway… what about champagne color? Can you tell something about a champagne by watching the bubbles? The legs on the glass? etc… you ‘just’ taste them, au contraire you do all the above things on reds/whites.

    Champagne baby!

  63. December 21, 2006

I agree with your notes on Veuve Clicquot-I had it couple of days ago.
My notes – not much of anything.

QOTD: On the web site, usually before dinner. Although this one (being posted late and a long episode) watched the first half before dinner, and the second half with my coffee at breakfast.

As a fellow J-E-T-S fan, hopefully you’ll look like Billy Gibbons and Dusty Hill (if you don’t know it — look it up!) in late January!

    Gary,

I have no doubt that our dear friend Paris is an expert in Champagne vintages ;=) You should invite her to the show. Really.

One of the first and last things I watch during the workweek is WLTV. It’s a breath of fresh air (or sip of ridonculously colored juice) in an oitherwise hectic environment. Thanks! BTW, G, I have my Bears undefeated scruff going on for some time now… in comparison, your face looks like a baby’s ass ;-)

  68. December 21, 2006

I’ve been watching for a while in iTunes. I started watching podcasts just to hear English speakers and because I live in France and French TV sucks. Anyway, got hooked! I drink a lot of wine, never really knew too much about it, but became more interested living here, how could you not! I saw the most recent episode about Champagne and sparkling wines and was wondering. What you think about? How available and popular in the US? etc…. are the sparkling wines from Saumur, from the Loire Valley in France. I find them a really good value, and much better than some of the other sparklers like the Crémant, which are sometime more expensive. Just wanted some opinions about that. Thanks

Thanks for another great, excuse me, AWESOME show. Timely, too. I know just the right relative to get the Coppola Sofia Blanc De Blancs for. Thanks for solving my Christmas gift dilemma!

The following statements are NOT based in fact:

Gary, your Jets have a one week reprieve before they get annialated by the Raiders. The Autumn Wind is going to blow into your town and pillage your end zone. Your Jets may be awesome in comparison to the Raiders right now, but come New Years day, they will wish they were playing anyone else!

(Though this smack talk has no base in reality, maybe it will give you some amunition for getting up for what otherwise would be a non-threatening game. I’ve been a part of the Raider Nation for a long time. It is AWESOME to become part of the Vaynernation!)

QOD: I usually watch from my home office….My wife usually hears your voice and says something like “oh, you are watching that weird wine guy again??” HA! I usually catch her catching a peek at the episode over my shoulder though… :)

I just saw that Mike Ditka (Da Coach) has is own labels of wine now (Mendocino Wine Co). Gary, you should give this a swirl/smell/taste as a huge NFL fan that you are. When I saw that his premier red is called “Kick Ass Red”, I immediately thought of you…..although, would you be able to give it a subjective review as a Jets fan??

  74. December 21, 2006

Great show! I’ve been thinking over the last few days about what to buy for New Years. My wife and I will be in NYC for the holiday weekend. Hopefully we will have a chance to make it out to the store while we’re in town.

I just had to :D :D :D because I say “Help a brotha out” all the time.

QOTD: I usually watch the show at home either directly at your website or through iTunes.

    Hey Gary,
    Loved the episode.
I have a bottle of Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin Vintage Reserve 1996 and a bottle of Don P. Vintage 1995 are they good to drink now?
I’ve been watching for a while on wine library.com

What were you tasting before coming on the air, Gary? Sugarfied? Batter cake? Wild hair? But these things only contribute to the wonderful, wacky atmosphere of WLTV. Thanks for your efforts.

QOTD: I usually watch the show on iTunes on the bus ride home from law school, late at night. Nothing makes one forget the horrors of the tax code like seeing a grown man eat dirt and get mad at a domestic bubbly.

    Lawrence Leichtman

This will be my last viewing for 2006 so thanks Gary for a great year. Way to finish with champagnes. I too am disappointed with the selection that we can get into the US. In Europe the selection is huge. New champanes I haven’t had are always good to see. I watch WLTV from the web site or iTunes. Definitely bed head to go with the beard. To get Beyonce out of your head think of Scott Ian from Anthrax while listening to scandanavian death metal. Works every time for me. What’s with the 80’s music references (except for Beyonce)? Are you stuck in the 80’s Gary?

  80. December 21, 2006

    Rebecca

    Gary,
If the JETS go all the way AND win the Super Bowl, when will you shave?
I watch WLTV on my PC. I want one of those cool phones (like yours) where I can watch it anywhere and I can share it with other people right away. This way I can keep up with Yankee games every night as well during the season.

Brandon M. – Lovely comment and I Completely, Totally Agree! Thanks Gary for everything in the past year. Congrats on episode 150 (sorry I’m a day or two late). 150 WOW!! Happy Holidays to you, your family and the Vanernation!

I’ll join the forums on my next day off (after Christmas)- PROMISE – when I have a few hours to tool around out there. Been hectic..gotta run now as I am running late for work already! Woops! Do I get to tell everyone that WLTV made me late – I’m thinking there not buying it!

  81. December 21, 2006

Gary…..what’s with the hair? You look like you just got off that comfy leather coach in the office, after a late afternoon nap? I LIKE IT, let loose. And I believe that’s the first time we’ve seen you sip before you sniffed! It’s nice to see you a little tipsy. That beard coming up will give you a definite air of sophistication? We’ll have to wait and see. Great episode, as usual….
QOD: Online, wltv.com, from work……..best part of my day.

Thanks for all you do, Gary. I watch literally EVERY day at work through the website, and many times I’ll rewatch my favorite episodes when the new one hasn’t been posted yet. It’s a great way to spend some work time. Also, just thanks for the knowledge. I’ve learned a ton from you.

Awesome episode. Hey Gary you’re a pretty good guy, we really appreciate you taking an hour or two out of your day to do winelibrary TV. QOTD: I usually watch immediately after i receive the emails. ~Cheers~

The song that gets any other song out of your head, almost without fail, is ‘Electric Avenue,’ you know, “Walk down to Electric Avenue, and then you take it higher.” Sing it and the other song will be erased, or at least muted.

No Iron Horse? As you probably know, they make the best bubbly in the U.S. (they are at least in the running) … You should do a show on wines of the Green Valley …

Long time lurker, first time poster. Absolutely LOVE the show, and your unique, over-the-top commentary that makes wine tasting exciting and FUN! Just a note, though…”blanc de blanc” simply means “white from white” and although in France it typically means from Chardonnay, in the U.S. it does not. In fact, Sofia quite often doesn’t contain any Chardonnay at all (82% Pinot Blanc, 9% Sauvignon Blanc, 9% Muscat).

    QOD answer:
I usually watch it on the website so I can click over to the wines while you’re talking about and tasting them. I watched one with my iPod on the subway, which was fun, except I didn’t like not being able to click around to read more about the wines and some dude was staring over my shoulder.
    Cheers.

151? Aptly named. Make sure no one smokes around this episode.

I had a nice run-in with a Cava the other night actually … Cristalino Brut Rose, bubbles, strawberries, rocks and it’s five freakin’ bucks! Good times.

QOD: off the site, on the laptop, in the front room, along with a few extra cases that won’t fit in the fridge or the closet. Good company, I suppose.

    Gary,
Rediculous…Beyonce? once you go black bottle? Beep load? Histerical. Ditto on the Korbel; no yeasty/brioche, just seltzer to me. Nice ep. I’d say a 94, greath length and complexity.

QOD: Sneakily, my gf hates it when I watch. Beats me. :)

    E,
I tried the regular Cristalino, again like seltzer but with a bit of strawberry like acidity. Def. not 90pts.

This is a lot more fun when you don’t spit too much.

I don’t spit, either. Wine, that is.

Nice episode. With the build-up, I thought you were about to pan our local Gruet, but then you rated it higher than I do. The Blanc de Noirs is the inexpensive Gruet I rated at 87.

I rated the Korbel at 81. I took the tour. They were good folks, very generous with the tasting, but I’m sorry, the wine just isn’t that good.

I can’t wait to try the Morlet. Thanks for the tips.

Awesome episode! QOD: I download it thru iTunes and onto my iPod. Then, most times, I dock my iPod and watch the episode on tv, most times in my bedroom, and sometimes on my 40″ LCD XBR Bravia in the living room. Sometimes I watch it at work, on my iPod. I watch 100% of all episodes; Concepcion watches the show about 70% of the times. I save every single download in a file named WLTV in an external hard drive.

Great huge episode Gary – I wonder what part you’ll get in the next Copolla film?

Veuve is one of my favourite grand Marques (Pol Roger and Billecart-Salmon are my absolute favs) – definately payed the club price for it several times – though about £60 in the UK!

episode #151 is the first WLTV I’ve seen, i watched it on my MAC desktop at home. It was informative and fun to watch! Great time to rate some bubbly. Would love to see what you think of some the other big names you mentioned (Dom P., P. J. “Flower”, Crystal, Tattinger, etc… I love the value of Cava sparklers myself. Since were on the topic of bubbly… Moscato di Asti is another wonderful fizzy treat. It is well valued at around 10$ to 20$, super fruity aromas, sweet and effervescent. Usually too sweet for the Brut die hards but well recieved by most others, especially the ladies… in fact, even grandma will like it.

    Hello Gary,
No doubt, I thought that this was a GREAT episode! Thank you for your nice comments regarding my family’s Champagne. To answer Kahuna’s question, the Champagne Pierre Morlet Millesime 1999 can easily age for another five years. The wine is mature enough to enjoy now, and should reach its peak within a year.
    Happy and SPARKLING Holidays!

    Gary,

Great review of champagne/sparkling. I have the NV clicquot brut chilling in my cave. I hope it wows me more than it did you–will definitely share it with friends and family! QOD: I watch WLTV daily on my laptop with my 2 1/2 year-old son. We sit on the couch and I kid you not, my boy acts out everything that you do, but instead of a glass of vino, he uses his sippy cup. He even shoves the cup in front of the screen so everyone can see the “color” and later turns it upside down to “dump out” the excess juice. And yes, every time you sip, he sips. It is a pretty cute sight to see. jp

    Gary,

Thanks for another champagne episode! Like you, sparkling wine is my favorite “beverage with alcohol.” Glad to see you liked the ‘02 Gimmonet (even if you didn’t pronounce the last syllable of the name!). When I was in Champagne a year ago, people were saying the ‘02 vintage was going to be a good one; let’s hope so, as we need something to buy after all those ’96s. And to answer Ben N above: yes, the ‘96 Veuve Clicquot is excellent now; I’ve had several bottles and loved everyone of them.

One final note to Gary: I know you think the nonvintages of the big houses, like Clicquot, aren’t worth the money, given the other choices out there (like some of the smaller growers you’ve praised), and I agree with you. But I wouldn’t want folks to think that the more expensive vintage champagnes and prestige cuvees from these same houses aren’t up to snuff, because they are. E.g., the ‘96 Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame is awesome; one of the best champagnes I’ve ever had.

    QOTD: on your web site.

Thanks for this great video blog. Happy New Year to all!

[...] The Sparklers Our first sparkler on list is Castell Roig Brut. This is a sparkling wine from Spain that sells for $10 a bottle. Gary Vaynerchuk, of Wine Library TV fame, likes this wine a lot. In his recent video on sparkling wines, he rates the wine 89 points and states that this sparkling wine will be all the rage in 15 years. I say get some now while it’s cheap. [...]

Great QOTD: But I am biased. I watch WLTV in iTunes, not in a browser. I usually let two or three episodes pile up so that I can watch about an hour worth of WLTV at once. I typically watch it during lunch time during the week.

    Great episode. Keep them coming.

I think I detected a mild intoxication towards the latter part of this episode.

A sparkling wine episode with 9 tastings and no Prosecco?! What about the ~Zardetto Zeta~? I like the touch of sweet the regular Zardetto has and am very curious about the Zeta, but haven’t gotten around to trying it. Also, if you come across the Drusian Prosecco through a distributor, give that a taste and you’ll want it in your stock.
