Thanks for the long awaited Cahors ep. Gary. I hated my first tannat experience though. Seems like these wines need 15+ yrs before the tannins yield to the fruit.

Also thanks for the rec.s today. I can’t wait to surprise my gf with dinner and pop the bottle in Times Square…shhhh.

DONE- Case ordered- Awesome job on the intro- Oh well first Tampa Steve blew my vow not to order any wine between 12noon and 2pm and now Gary gets me to break my vow not to buy any wines until the episode is done being played.

Don’t worry GV the little weiner comment is gone but not forgotten!

QOD. I was pretty intoxicated all weekend so the details are pretty fuzzy. Went to restaurants on both Christmas Eve and Christmas and to my surprise both meals were comped by the owner or manager. It was a great weekend to be me. Anyhow, since both meals were Italian, we had bottles of Nero d’Avola, Chianti and Silver Oak Cab. OK, the Silver Oak isn’t Italian, and maybe it didn’t even pair well with some of the food, but it’s the restaurant owner’s fave and it was free.

Those Jets really made you wait til the end. Are they as big into being drama queens as the Redskins? …keeping you on the edge of your seat until the very end? Thanks for focusing on a specific area. You can’t find that kind of info anywhere! And the phrase “it’s kind of boring” is why you rock! jp

    Greetings from a long-time lurker.

Great episode Gary. You brought back nice memories of my Grandma, who made the best pigs-in-the-blanket. If you do come to Indy, my husband and I will absolutely be interested in any tasting you arrange.

    As for wine:

Congrats on the JETS victory. Chad may get comeback player of the year. What do you think?

Never heard of Cohors until tonight. Thanks for introducing another region (to me at least). I like it when you do a little bit of history on the grape or region. It figures that the wine I want to buy is out of stock (KAHUNA must have bought it all).

Damn…. I was happy just to pop open a 2001 Masi Compofiorin (nothing to write home about) since none of my in-laws drink wine. Drinking fine wine is difficult with my wife expecting in the next couple weeks. Not quit sure how some of you guys were able to even tap open 12 bottles. Must have been some serious family gatherings. Good for you guys.

Hello Gary! I appreciate your passion and frankness in wine education. It’s helpful for ignorant beginners like me to be less afraid in approaching and trying different wines. Though that may be my downfall if I ever become an alcoholic (just kidding). Also like how you can laugh at yourself (eg, the Leon Washington mixup).

Another great episode. Just started tuning in two weeks ago and already driving my wife nuts as I have almost watched all 153 episodes. Had a bottle of Yalumba Museum Muscat, ‘05 Monkey Bay Marlbrough Sauvignon Blanc, and ‘03 Eberle Steinbeck Zinfandel. The Yalumba was by far the best. Any chance you will be coming to see your boy Justin Miller in Hawai’i at the Pro Bowl? Maybe do a tasting party? Send some love to Hawai’i!

    Gary,

On Christmas Eve we opened the 2004 Gravity Hills Tumbling Tractor Zin nthat arived two days too late for Thanksgiving. It was nice. I am a big fan of a tiny little winery in Sand Point Idaho. Pend d’Oreille (pronounced pon der ray) They use Central Washington grapes and are really coming on strong. I had thier 2003 cabernet franc is really nice and a $10 red blend, Bistro Rouge, that is amazing. Thier web site is http://www.powine.com

    Acacia Chardonnay ‘05
    Tapestry
And a Rioja. Cannot remember the years on the last two. Bottles too far down in the recycle bin.

Yeah, I spit my beverage all over the computer screen when Gary made his hors d’eurve comment. I’m sure I wasn’t the only one.

On a serious note, I thought this was a great episode that introduced me to a new region that grows a grape I like.

    Happy Holidays Gary!!!

This past weekend was a little light on the vino side but New Years Eve will make up for that. This past weekend, we enjoyed:

-NV Martini & Rossi Prosecco (nice and crisp sparkler to start)
-2002 JanKris Reserve Chardonnay (nicely balanced fruit and not too much oak)
-2001 La Maglia Brunello di Montalcino (phenomenal for an under $30 brunello)

Gary – Great show on Cahors. We all need to know more on these virtually undiscovered wines regions that are producing some great stuff.

    QOTD wines this weekend:

Friday 12/22: 2004 Chateau Jean Faure Saint Emilion. Paired w/Rack of Lamb and decanted for 2 hours. This young Saint Emilion was full of fruit w/ a big nose of cherry. I have 5 bottles left and can’t wait to see how this one evolves over time.

Saturday 12/23: 2004 Chiarello Family Wines Zinfandel Giana Vineyard Napa. Paired w/Grilled Spareribs and proved a great compliment w/ it’s spicy notes. This is Michael Chiarello of Food Network and Fine Living Napa Style. Try this if you can find it.

Sunday 12/24 XMAS EVE: 2001 Havens Vineyard Syrah Napa Valley, 2004 Mitolo Shiraz Jester Tarlton McLaren Vale (a big, up front, in your face Shiraz), 2005 Louis Jadot Beaujolais Villages. No specific pairing at this family buffet nosh.

Monday 12/25 CHRISTMAS DAY: A little tasting while waiting for the main event at #1 son’s house – The 2004 Jester again, 2005 Marquis Philips Shiraz South Eastern Australia, 2005 Marqis Philips Sarah’s Blend Red Wine South Eastern Australia. The main event: 2001 E. Guigal Chateauneuf du Pape (decanted for 5 hours. My 5th time with this wine and it keeps evolving) paired w/ Prime Rib and a 1996 Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin La Grande Dame (what can one say about this one?) w/ Bread Pudding w/Bourbon Sauce.

Have you heard of the cahors raised in terra cotta pots instead of oak? Supposed to be mind blowingly stong and the “old” style…

    Wines of the weekend:

    Nicolas Feuillatte Rose NV
    Chateau de Fargues 2001 Sauterne
    Daniel Rion Clos Vougeot 2002
Jean-Marc Bouley Pommard “Les Fremiers” 2002
    Dr Frank Semi-Dry Riesling 2005
    Casa Lapostolle Sauvignon Blanc 2005
Domaine de Closel Savennieres Clos Papillon 2004

The Savennieres was outstanding as well as the Bouley Pommard which in my opinion is one of the best 2002 Burgundies I have had. Among the top 5, and I probably tried about 100 different 2002 Burgundies in the last two years. It keeps getting better.

Great Cahors feature. I will definitely try some given the price point.

Lt me by preface by saying my family is not a big wine family. They have some things in their wet bar, but they were not all that impressive….(Yellowtail) I had to bite my lip pretty hard. They did have a bottle of ‘97 Alexander Valley Merlot that was badly corked, well, thats what I thought… the cork was tainted the first pour smelled of raisins then I decanted it and tried to salvage what could have been a nice bottle…it was OK. Heavy on Pepper taste, lots of sediment… I stopped drinking it. I opened another bottle..a 1999 BV Coastal….corked..and bad. Then I had some Jacob’s Creek another day… oh who am I kidding, I’m drinking it right now. I was attracted by the new Wine Spec report and whatever…. they are out of the Reserve but have the 6 dollar bottle, and so I get it and a Louis M. Martini Cab and a Bing Cherries and a some sushi and for some reason crescent rolls and little smokies and Brie…oh yeah b/c Vaynerchuk recommended pigs in a blanket!. Anyway… my check cark is at home or some reason, and I end up putting back the bing cherries, the Louis Martini, the sushi, and get things under 50. So I’m eating little smokies with cheap brie and Jacob’s Creek Shiraz fruit Bomb that’s not all that great, but not terrible, but what do I know… I just am glad that I had SOME cash and armed with the knowledge that, in a pinch, you can afford pigs in a blanket. Thanks Gary, I’ll stop lurking. Here it is my coming out. A long-ass rant! Happy almost New Year. It’s Krug this year!

Well…what did I drink over Christmas…a Rosemount Estate Grenache and Syrah blend 2003 I think. I decanted it for 6 hours. It was nice…Probably not a great “Vayniac” type wine, but I am learning…even drank it in my new speigalau red wine balloon glasses (from Target none the less)…

Thanks for exposing us to a new (for most of us) region!

Christmas wines: Louis Roederer Brut NV, 2003 Eroica Riesling (yum), 2005 Girard Chardonnay, 2003 Dogwood Cellars Meritage (partner’s cousin is the winemaker), and Raymond Burr’s 2001 Port (okay, it is a CA Port-style wine).

Had Uruguayan Tannat at an Uruguayan restaurant a few weeks ago — nothing life-changing, but a great food wine and a lot of fun to see the owner of the restaurant light up when we asked for something from his home country!

Hi Gary, I’ll spare you the details of my Christmas drinking, but thanks for tasting Triguedina’s Probus 2003 for us.
    Bubble Brothers
    – we’re Triguedina’s Irish agents for the Prince Probus wines – brought in a few cases of the 03 just before Christmas along with the much more affordable Château de Flore from the same supplier, and I’m sending my customers to you via the Bubble Brothers blog so that anyone who wants to trade up from the Flore can see just what they’re going to get.

Tried Cahors tonight for the first time during the Superbowl with a big steak. It was the 2002 Clos La Coutale. I tasted it right away and it was pretty tight, but after decanting for 5 or 6 hours I love the leather, smoke, and dark fruit. Great stuff!

qotd went cheap this weekend. got a domaine de la Chanade ‘les Rials’ blanc from cote du tarn (southwest France.) Got it because it was made with this rare oddball varietal I hadn’t tried yet called loin de l’oeil. Means ‘look for the eye’ in french or something like that. For $7 I had no expectations. Pretty good for the money actually, light crisp acidic, tasted like limes. Went well with the fish I had in a lemon butter sauce.
Gary, you gotta do a vin jaune episode buddy.
