Another great job! Maybe diet Coke is the way to go at some of these national chains.

No one told me about Wine Library. I stumbled across it while using winezap.com to search for the lowest price of a particular cabernet I was looking for. After clicking on the TV tab and viewing several episodes, I was hooked.

I have told anyone who will listen about Wine Library TV. I bought Vayniac T-shirts for my wine drinking buddies. Heck, Gary, I’m 55 years old and am acting like a kid again waiting for the next episode of the Lone Ranger and Roy Rogers.

    “It’s all about the wine!”

Here in the Netherlands, South African wines are hot! Maybe for historical reasons (colonisation), but most def also for quality reasons. Many of them are real steals! (and even cheaper here than in the USA)

Great episode, Gary! I totally agree on the BV. Haven’t had the others though.

QOTD part 1 – Wandering aimlessly on the internet looking for info about a wine I was interested in (I don’t remember which one, maybe 2004 etude pinot noir?) I stumbled upon WLTV through a google search and never looked back.

part 2 – Besides my girlfriend, who is a recent convert to the beauty of wine, I haven’t told anyone else. Being a college student at a large Sorority/Fraternity dominated university, cheap beer reigns supreme for pretty much all of my friends :(

IMHO, in general, Cali cabs and chards simply aren’t great everyday wines. When I think of everyday wines I mean wines that compliment food. In many, if not most cases, the Cali cabs and chards overpower food because of their unbalanced alcohol and/or oak. At the price point discussed today ($8 – $13) I’d much rather go with something like a Nero d’Avola, but I’m pretty old world.

    Gary,
Now for the answer to your question…I found Wine Library TV by doing a search on how to do a proper wine Tasting…yes I found you through Google. I watched 1, then 2, then about an hour later I was emailing my friends and telling them to check out the site. Heck, my daughters and I watch you while we are making dinner. We are pretty good at doing “Hi I am Gary Vay-Ner-Chuck”. My daughters obviously don’t join in on the tasting, but they do enjoy trying to guess the bouquets. We all loved the “How to train your palate” episode.

If you ever come to South Central PA we have a growing group of Vayniacs who would love to taste wine with you!

1)on the WL email list for over a year and followed sales email to WLTV

2)my wife, best bud Lonny L, dad George A, best neighbors Pookie and Tootie, 15 friends gathered at an annual car convention at a wine tasting i put together, and about 100 other wine fans i have come accross in the last 6 months (basically anyone who likes wine, i tell them about WLTV)

    3)not applicable.

Just for fun, everyone, go to Zachy’s and follow their link to their wine video blog and click on the lady tasting. I am sure she knows tons more than me and i am not demeaning her, but compare the fun we get with Gary to this lady’s demeanor (talk about the boring, stuffy wine image we are all trying to get past).

Gary, for fun, please put a link to this lady’s blog next to your head on the next episode, so all the other viewers will watch her for 20 seconds and come to appreciate you more – YOU DESERVE THE CREDIT!

This was a great episode GV. I assume the Wolf Trap is a large production wine??

QOD: I discoverd WLTV through the WL web site. I have referred my dad and a few co-workers. Most of my friends think I’m ridiculous with my addiction to WLTV.

    QOD #1
I think I stumbled upon WLTV from an ad or hyperlink on another site.

    QOD #2
I’ve referred WLTV to at least 10 people; my wife, in-laws, friends and co-workers. Anyone I know who enjoys wines and/or the Jets.

I can’t stand epsiodes like this from a tasting stand point. Not only are these marginal (at best) wines, but if Gary scored them an 86, there’s so many cases made your probably not gonna get even CLOSE to the same bottle. The one you buy may be an 83, or and 88. The Wolf Trap is different becasue it’s out of the way and not found everywhere, but Rosemount, Mondavi, BV, and Columbia Crest…PAZZZZZZZZ

    QOTD:

    Part 1: Google

Part 2: All family a friends, but I’m the one that brings them news and shows them episodes so they really don’t come on contribute. WLTV is just that thing that Brandon is into, with a roll of the eyes.

Part 3: If the site is good enough, then I tell everyone.

    Gary’s REAL Opinion:

“Don’t drink ANY of these wines.”

    Gary,
First off thank for actually doing a show for us
$5 – $15 cheapskate wine drinkers. This is VERY
    appreciated!

Now, where do you get off telling us not to drink
any of these wines? There is a reason why we drink
these wines. We want to have a glass or two of wine
everyday AND UNLIKE YOU we can’t afford breaking open
a $30-$50 bottle of wine every night.

Sure, we know that $30 – $50 wine is pretty much better
than $5 – $15 wine (remember my graph of Chris’
    spreadsheet?). Doh.

    So, we have a choice:

    1. Drink great wine once a week.

    2. Drink cheapskate wine every day.

So, in general, we chose #2 and occasionally
    splurge for the fancy stuff.

  26. January 4, 2007

    Brandon M

    Tangaroa
You are sorely mistaken about this…I would say go read the forum and decide DIFFERENT wines other than these. Gary is not saying don’t drink $10 wines, he saying there are MUCH better wines at these price points.

He truly wants you to buy good wine at ALL price points. This is a reason I can’t stand when he tastes Rosemount, he never likes it and niether do a lot of us.

    Gary,
First a compliment: The playoff beard is sick. If the Jets do lose, do NOT shave it all off. Go for a fumanchu and never look back.

Next, this episode is such a let-down after last week’s discoveries. I guess it may have been useful to those of us who have brand loyalty. Being 24 years old, I have no such thing.

QOD 1: surfing the internet for a local wine shop.

Love the idea of a show on every day wines . . . maybe you could try again with better QPR selections (i.e., keep the price point but do your best to get the BEST wine you can buy for the money).

  30. January 4, 2007

    upstater

I agree with Brandon. Good of you to tackle the wines found at chain restaurants, VAY NER CHUCK. They are generic and taste like…a wine…thats about it. I agree that you can find great wines at the 10 and under price point. Of course its limiting because barely anyone in the US produces at that price! Go to France pick up a vin de pays…and enjoy the $3 bottle…its better than Rosemount. Or make your own…atleast you have the satisfaction of production. Great show…keep it up!!!! First; Google, Second: Everyone I see, Third; just found it. Gotta try the wolf trap!

With respect to the Boekenhoutskloof, I had their Porcupine Ridge (lower end Syrah) with some friends while I was in Cape Town a few months ago and it was terrible. Truly disappointing since those guys make one of the best Syrahs in SA every year.

For the best food in Providence go to Al Forno on Federal Hill!! Make a reservation!! Had been ordering online then saw episode 1 the day after its debut and since then have told every wine drinking friend about WLTV(they are probably lurkers). Isn’t it great to be excited by a $7 wine!!! GO JETS!!!

I oddly enough stubbled onto WL while searching for BV Private Reserve. A few days later in checking back caught Ep 1 and have watched ever since. (I’ll admit that I still buy much more from Wine Exchange), but I am slowly converting to WL. Both are the best damn prices in the country by far, and wrangle for the $1 up or $1 down on almost every wine. I would say that Winex is a little more traditional and WL brings more to the table.

Told my father. He was a little bummed on the 2001 Pio Cesare Barolo & 2001 Guigal CDP, but hey thas another story. I plan on poppin the 2003 CLIO and getting him hooked. Anothet story again.

I’ve been road warior’n it for past 3-4 weeks so I havnt commented like normal, but would like to give a “HEY” to Que Syrah Sera for the help on the 2004 Schild (BTW I missed when I was out of town) anyays – I read all the comments on the Wine Spectator forum – I love your style!!!!!

BTW – I got a pile the next time free shipping hits – Anyone else holding back???? – I ll move to Forums now TYVM

I agree with Brandon too. Enough tasting these artifical wines. Big Producers of Bad-resteraunt wines suck. Why would anyone drink them? It is better to drink water and save your $$ to buy an L’Adventure Zin for $22 and have a real wine experience. If you want a buzz, go with Bud. Then again, why are we eating in these chain resteraunts? Like what Gary teaches in the wine world, we should be seeking out the small, independent, inexpensive resteraunts where the chef loves what he does and loves his clientle, prepares real food and bring your own Vino Nobile di Montalchino.

Gary, I have been on the WL.com e-mail list for 7 years – I got on board with episode one based on your initial e-mail. I have refered all of my family, many friends, and numberous co-workers. When ever the subject of wine comes up – - I talk about this cool video blog, WLTV!

Gary, When you are tasting lower priced wines like these- do you score based on wine per price or do you score regardless of the price. I have read other wine critics explain there system. So a wine you scored a 9o that was $10 would be equal to a Insignia that you scored 90-Just Curious

Tangaroa- There is a ton of good under $10, and certainly under $15, wine out there. It’s just that very little of it is from the U.S. Gary has recommended a whole bunch of under $15 wines that he really likes and I think all he is saying is that you should try some because they are so much better than BV, etc…I am a dedicated buyer of under $15 wines. Try Spain (Artazuri, Las Rocas, Mas Que Vinos Ercavio Roble, Olivares Altos de la Hoya, Castano Hecula, Castano Solanera, Capcanes Mas Donis Barrica, Juan Gil); Italy (Farnese Casale Vecchio, Di Majo Norante Sangiovese, Masciarelli Montepulciano, Lucarelli Primitivo, Cantele Primitivo Salerno); Australia (Pillar Box Red, Trevor Jones Virgin Chardonnay, Milton Park Shiraz, Penfolds Koonunga Hill, Water Wheel, Kangarilla Road);also, Chile, Argentina, New Zealand, S. Africa, Languedoc Roussillon, France. I mean, if you like BV, Rosemount and Columbia Crest, drink and enjoy, but if you don’t, try some others at the same price. It’s fun!

    Cheers, Dan C.

QOTD – 1. Got the link while surfing wine websites ( I think it was corkd.com, that I never returned to). 2. Showed WLTV to my father, an experienced surfer and amateur wine taster.

On another subject, I pay twice the price for these wines at my liquor store (SAQ in Quebec, Canada – a state monopole on fine alcohols). That’s pretty frustrating. Somehow though European Wines and more expensive ones are closer to the price you would pay anywhere in the US. The Robert Mondavi one was 19$ CAN (ouch! not gonna try that one I think).

How I wish I could buy from WLTV!

  45. January 4, 2007

    ChrisR

    Gary,

Thanks for tasting my request of the Wolf Trap and THANKS for stocking it. I’ve been a huge fan of Boekenhoutskloof (pronounced boo – ken – hoots – kloof by the way)wines for a long time but they are hard to find. Almost everything I’ve tasted from them has been excellent. I think I’ve hounded you or your staff for about a year now to get more than just Chocolate Block so I’m thrilled that you’ve added another from this winery. Add more. They are a great producer.

OK, now I’m off to go buy some quick before your rave review leaves me empty handed.

QOD: I found the site on my own and have turned on about 20 co-workers and 10 friends and family to the site. I even wore my Vayniac shirt on NYE. Is that hard core or what?

    Gary,
Ah yes, the dilemna. As the palate improves, the cost goes up! Since I have been drinking better wine, it is hard to go back to cheaper ones that are not as good. Your restaurant comment is perfect. Unless you have a place with a great wine list, it’s tough to take. It’s like watching sports on regular vs HDTV. You can sit through the regular, but it JUST AIN’T QUITE THERE! Same with the better wines.

I for one am greatful that you introduce us to wines like God’s Hill Shiraz and Tumbling Tractors Zin. These are fabulous wines at reasonable (not cheap, but fair) prices. I also like the fact that you show us the high end stuff, so we can buy one or two, hold them and enjoy for special occassions. WLTV has nice balance, and a long, clean finish!!!

QOD: I saw an article in the WSJ on wine sites, and compared 5 or 6. Your prices and selection was the best. Then I got hooked on WLTV, and now my wife says “You ordered more wine???”

As far as referrals go, I have a group of friends who enjoy fine food and beverages. We regularly get together and share a fine single malt scotch. I think we will be doing some wines next time we gather, and I have passed on the WLTV link to them all. The episode that got me hooked was the Amarone episode, since it is my absolute favorite wine. Case in point: on Christmas eve I delivered a bottle of wine to one of these friends, and we started talking about Champagne. He mentioned he has a connection to get Pol Roget for $30. I came home and checked WL: $24. Immediately sent him the link.

Hey, there’s another show in the future: Amarone redux!!! Pair it with some of that sharp provolone and some Pecorino Romano! Throw in some roasted red peppers on Chiabatta bread, and you have a PARTY!!

    Keep up the good work.

Ok show since I try to avoid those garbage wines since I have tried them years ago. Never again but I thought the SA ringer would do well. Now, let’s do an entire show on SA wines?

QOD: How did I find out about WLTV? The same way Eric finds out about sites. I surf alot, found your site, ordered some wines and they came the next day which is always shocking how you do that and then started watching your reviews.

Who have I referred? All of my wine geeks at work and my foodie group.

And yes, if i see a great site, I tell everyone I know who I think may find it interesting.

Gary, when in Providence, you want to visit the Italian section known as Federal Hill. The main drag is Atwells Avenue. I’m there about once a month. My favorite restaurant is Cassarino’s. Check it out.

    Large Format Fever

Columbia Crest Two Vines, roughly 7ish dollars. It is great for 7 bucks. But please decant…for a long time!!! Definatly not as much oak as Grand Estate and a bit one dimensional, but for 7 dollars is pretty good wine. Consider it for parties!

  57. January 4, 2007

    Eric O

I was introduced to WineLibrary TV by the MSNBC special on MSN homepage. I have told everyone I know that drinks wine. However, that is my problem. I know 6 people who also enjoy wine. Maybe that has something to do with being from the midwest (Iowa) and living in Hawai’i (5 months). I love the idea from yesterday though about getting a tasting group together, especially to offset some of the cost of trying some higher end wines. Right now I need to find everyday wines, so I often look to other countries (Australia, Chile, New Zealand, Argentina, South Africa) as they seem to be the best bargains. Can’t wait for tomorrow’s episode!

  58. January 4, 2007

Great episode, Gary. You’ve been on a roll lately. Solid, well-informed, very smart efforts recently. The Ridge episode was excellent. Of today’s work I especially enjoyed the shout out to Cote Rotie and Hermitage.

Great episode….I know that I should put this in the forums but here is an idea for a show. How about tasting some wines from the Finger Lake region. I have travelled through there and found that they have some nice wines.

Gary, best show ever. What a great idea for a show, heh heh.

I agree, for this price range, I’d rather have a Tres Picos, Castano Solanero, or a Woot Monkey Prize, but I don’t always have those on hand. I usually have a couple of bottles of the Columbia Crest around. I agree it’s a little heavy on the oak, but it’s pretty decent as a daily dinner wine.

Dan C, thanks for the suggestions. I’ve tried some of them (I really didn’t like the Di Majo), but I’ll definitely look for some of the others. I guess I’m hesitant to try random $10 wines, but maybe I’m better off risking getting some losers than defaulting to a mediocre fallback.

QOTD: I was referred here by Woot Wine. I referred one friend that I know is into wine, but I don’t know that many other people who are really “into” wine. I have some other friends who drink wine, but they’re happy with Kendall Jackson chard.

I’m just sorry I wasn’t here from the very beginning. I’m going to a wine tasting at the end of the month locally here on Long Island, and I’m hyped. :)

QOTD #1: Read about Wine Library in the recent WSJ article on ordering via the Web. Joined mailing list and saw link to WLTV.
QOTD #2: My brother and I watched a few episodes together over the holidays. Note to Gary: he is a “Stone Cold” Steve Austin fan! He’s probably lurking out there.

IMHO, the best QPR wines in the $10 and under category are coming out of Spain. Two that I have tried that I can highly recommend are the Altos de Luzon, Jumillia and the 2004 Senorio de Barahonda Monastrell Tinto, Yecla.

QOTD…1. Found WLTV searching for Bob Egelhoff wines. That was about 90 episodes ago. 2. I tell everyone.

Hey Gary, the wines you tasted today, excluding the Wolf Trap, did you get those from my mother-in-law’s pantry? They were right next to the Rice Krispies, Creme Soda and apricot preserves. I thought she was saving them for a special occasion. Oh well, that’s ok, I think she has some Bartles and James as a back up.

….Diversity is a good thing. Keep it up.

Very useful episode. First, these wines are easy to find. Also, these are wines I have tasted so now I know where my nose and palate is compare to you.

QOTD part 1: I saw the add the day I got the Wine Spectator Top 100 issue in the mail. Thought it looked like a great idea. When I got to the site I couldn’t believe it was FREE to watch all the tasting and info.

QOTD part 2: I’ve told my two wine buddies about it and emailed links to some of my fav episodes. And my wife knows I’m way into it.

A great time for me to discover WLTV since I recently bought a 500 bottle cellar that MUST BE FILLED

    1) found a link from wine.woot. Havent been back to wine.woot since. JK. Wine.woot is ok beside the fact that all the college kids who frequent the site complain they arent selling Franzia.
    2) told my bro about the blog. He is begining to take wine seriously (also a college student).
    3) Third part of the question I forgot what you asked…and/or was confused.

First post. Amazing site. Favorite Episode (So Far): Building your Pallet (phenomenal!!!)

QOD #1- Found WL googling info about primitivo after picking a bottle up in a bargain bin and enjoying it way more than the $8 price would suggest. Saw the link to TV around episode 17, been watching since. #2 – local wine geeks and a few wine drinkers around the country via e-mail. My wife is well aware and doesn’t care for the vlog. I was a WL customer before there was a WLTV. Since it started, I have referred anyone I have come across that has an interest in wine. WLTV has shown me that there is NEVER any need to drink boring wine regardless of the price point. The community that has developed around it is a bonus. I even sort of started liking the Jets…a little. They’ve got a great coach. And the G-men suck so why not?

Hmmm — I have tasted most of these myself, and I don’t agree with your call. Perhaps this is a good thing, because it is helping me understand my palate vis a vis yours. I agree with RP that Columbia Crest is one of the most consistently-good producers of value-priced wine in the US and havce seen high 80s from him for their Grand Estates Merlot and Cabernet. I cannot stand the Mondavi PR or the BV, however.

That being said, I respect your opinion and learn just as much from when I disagree as when I agree with you!

Providence — I agree with the writers above — think Italian, think Federal Hill

QOD: I placed my first order October 10, 2004.
WLTV hadn’t even been invented yet!
I have told so many about the site and the great prices. Most of my family live in states that are on the “Unshippables” list.
I’ve tasted most of today’s wines and drank them in my early “wine years” and I did enjoy them. My taste has changed so much now, that I pass these wines by on the store shelves. Haven’t tried Foxglove or Wolf Trap. I was interested in the Wolf Trap, but WL is already sold out.C’est la vie!

QOTD #1 – researching wine fridges on the wine spectator forums, somebody mentioned the “wine guy” at wltv… I was curious, and followed the link. I, since, have not returned to the spectator forums (I prefer WLTV and WLTV forums… much better, friendlier, and more helpful people).

QOTD #2 – Everyone that gives any sort of care for my personal interests… all friends, family, and even my friends that don’t drink alcohol at all, I’ve got them watching shows!!!

Hey Gary – Great show. Tangaroa needs to go back and watch the Aussie Shiraz eps. Thanks for turning me onto 2 Up and Thorn Clark Shotfire – both spectacular QPR and under 12-15 bones!! That’s my everday juice.
QOTD1-I was driving home from Philly to Nothern Westchester after taking my daughter from one bat mitzvah in NJ to the second one in Philly, when I saw a huge WL billboard on the NJTpke. I started watching…and I’m hooked. My first order arrived in about a day – 3 cases of great stuff – I had to get another bin to double my storage to 250 bottles. Now I’m thinking about a third rack.
QOTD2-I told my wife, my across the street neighbor who is in a few wine clubs I think, my good golfing friend who is a true Northern Californian educated oenophile, and my nurse friend who also loves to taste and collect great QPR wines, among others…
    QOTD3-I tell everybody who’ll listen!!!
Way to go – you’re on a roll! How about doing the best wines WL under$10, or under $20? How about a blind tasting/Gift pack for under $100 or under $150 or under $200?? I think we all love a little simulcam tasting action! A great way to extend our palates!!

Well, so much for the Wolf Trap. I was wondering how that one would turn out.

I had a run-in with a cheap South African red myself last night, oddly enough … no bacon, but nice for the price. If I can find notes, maybe I’ll post ‘em.

This episode was great — as far as it went. But how could you possibly talk about Everyday Drinking Wines without featuring Lancer’s Sparkling Rose??!! Surely you remember: “Lancer’s Sparkling Rose and a baggie of Velveeta cubes – that’s lip-smackin’ snackin’!” Ahh, how soon they forget….
Well, there’s nothing to do now but move on to the QOD’s.

QOD # 1 – Lars is a friend, and in his Current Schedule Information, about a week before he first appeared, I read the announcement of his upcoming intro to Episode # 148 – the now-famous “paper, cork, wet rock, jalapeno pepper, Jersey dirt-tasting” show!

QOD # 2 – I’ve told family and co-workers, and several Disney clients. Most recently I told the Wine Guy at Costco! He was very knowledgeable, and had been choppered in to the wine department to boost holiday sales, which he apparently did. He knew a lot about wine, but didn’t know about WineLibrary TV. Now he does!

Footnote: I tell ‘em all that it helps to have an interest in wine or the Jets — but that it takes neither to become an Official Vayniac!

Wow…I made the top 90! hurray! just kidding…seriously…don’t take the top 10 spots to just say “oooh, look at me, I’m dedicated but have nothing interested to say”…sheesh…

Loved the comments on all the wines…my wife used to work in events and their call brands for wine were the BV Century and Mondavi CK…she laughed when she saw you tasting those, because they are pretty much crap. Those first couple of wines remind me of eating at Chili’s! Everytime we decide to grab some tasty Chili’s cause the budget needs some massaging…I look at their “drinks” list and laugh my face off at the so called advertising for their beverages….the pictures look disgusting…let alone the knowlege of what you’re actually spending $7 a glass on…COME ON…you can get a bottle of that hooch for $7.

    Anyway…QOTD:

Rhode Island eats: Al Forno by far-IT Invented the grilled pizza! yeah thats big time

Lets be honest all the people out there with good wine palates bought plenty of cheap duds to get to where they are now. I am sure no one came out of the womb with a taste for first growths.

I collect Chateauneuf du Pape, I sell Chateauneuf du Pape to less than 1% percent of the customers that come to the shops I supply. I love it when someone walks into my stores and has a great palate and buys really great stuff, but I sell a lot more Beringer White Zinfandel to happy smiling people who enjoy what they’re buying just as much.

Don’t be haters, don’t pick on young palates.

QOTD: Found the store on line, and was harassed by a wine rep. who said- “I don’t know how the hell those @#$%^er’s in New Jersey do it! My cost is more than their @#$%^ing retail!

Tangaroa, what website are you on? Why did you visit it? Will you return to seek more advise on wine? Answer; It’s Gary’s website!!!! You came looking for his expertise and you sure as hell will return to seek more advise…FOR FREE!!!! That’a where he gets off telling us what we need to know.
Gary, sorry to get on a rant but the rest of us appreciate the work that you do.
QOD. I, like GeneV have been a winelibrary customer long before WineLibraryTV. It was a natural progression. I have told everyone who will listen about it. As a Vascular Surgeon, I can also push the health benefits along with a plug for YOUR site. My motto long ago became, “LIfe is too short to drink bad wine”. My wife,Carmen and my kids finally engraved it on a wine glass and gave it to me as a gift. I know you know it, I hope people like Tangaroa will too.
Good luck to you and your Jets.

Gary, when mondavi jr. was on your show awhile back he said his family was bought out but on today’s show it you made it seem like the mondavi’s still make the juice. Are they still the winemakers? Also a great low budget wine…2000 Apollonio….great stuff.

Gary, the new glass sucks…bring back the playoff glass! You can’t swirl properly in the new glass and it looks silly.

Thanks for the shout out to CANADA!

I came across the site from a link on another wine site…don’t remember which one.

To all those who didn’t appreciate this tasting let me remind you that not everyone is a wealthy sommelier who has access to WLTV and all the expensive boutique wines that are reviewed. For everybody else this type of tasting is very useful. I appreciated hearing tasting notes on wines I could access and relate to even if most of them are wines I wouldn’t drink either. The Wolf Trap was a nice surprise and sure enough for the first time I found a wine that was reviewed, that I wanted to get, and is actually available at my local wine distributor. Yeah!,,,can’t wait to pick it up after work.

I’ve told over a dozen people about the site but I’m still working on getting some of them to become members. Since I’ve started watching Wine Library TV I have come off as such as wine geek to some people that I have had 3 people tell me in the last 2 weeks that I should get into the wine business. I had to explain that the reason I know so much about wine/wine tasting is WLTV.

    Cheers!

You definitely got my attention with your reference to artificial flavors. Are big producers actually adding artificial flavors, colors, extracts, aromas to their wines without including that fact on the label? If not, how do you account for those notes? As a beerhead turned wine enthusiast, ingredients are a pretty fundamental concern. Thanks.

    Gary,
Please accept my sympathy for having endured this torture to your palate.

Great episode for the beginners. Most of us wouldn’t go close to these wines save for Columbia Crest.

    QOTD:

I saw ad for WL on NJ Turnpike and decided to look further. I am watching WLTV since episode 1.

I keep telling about WL to all my friends and relatives, although most of my relatives not into wine, which brings me to my question:

My father was never a wine drinker. He never liked alcohol in any form.
Now he likes kosher wines based on concord grape-sugary syrup basically.

I tried several times to introduce him to real wines but he didn’t like them.
Please suggest a transition wine that will help to turn him towards nice reds and whites.

GV I’m disappointed in your reaction to the Columbia Crest & even concerned with the condition of your palate. We were forced to endure 2 bottles of that for New Years Eve & it was torture. You should really take some time off. Perhaps you should drink water over the weekend while in Mass/RI.

    Gary,
How about restocking that Wolf Trap??
You should do an episode about unusual tasting wines (read: soy sauce, gym clothes, bacon, etc). They might not be something id bring to a party with non-wine drinkers, but its fun to enjoy them with those who have had enough of the mundane and want a change.

    QOD:

    1. I shopped at your old store every time I was visiting the Short Hills Mall. Placed my first online order in April 2004 when you offered free shipping.

QOTD – saw your ad in Wine Spectator, figured I would give it a whirl. I have only told my girlfriend, who watches it every once-in-a-while and to mu assistant at the store I run. Welcome to Providence! Best dining experience? My house, baby! I’ll unscrew the finest bottle from my cellar for you and the family.

If that scares you a bit too much, then:

Mill’s Tavern – great dining experience
Hemenway’s – if you want seafood
Capital Grille – people seem to like it, but my experience has been so-so

Ideally, you should probably head to Federal Hill for the overall experience. Great Italian food followed by a desert place for some gelato. If you’re not looking to walk around and soak in the neighborhood, I would suggest Mill’s Tavern.

Any chance some southern New England Vayniacs can meet up with you for a toast?

    Gary,
I was a budding customer of the old store with the 2 foot aisles that you had to wait for other shoppers to vacate before you could enter each aisle!!! Think I found that by searching for an online place to get wine from the fingerlakes NY state region and Yahoo searched out Winelibrary.com. Realized it was in Springfield, where I worked for 15 years at the amazing Autoland!!(UGH!!) Had a prefered customer card on my keychain, but never realized what it was for? Joined the mailing list at some time, but didn’t see Winelibrary TV until about episode 60.
I have referred Winelibrary TV to anyone at my job who I know loves wine, and anyone who I know can appreciate good entertainment.

Nice ep! Fortunately you let us know about some of these cheaper wines cause not everyone can afford to drink 96+ point wines every night :)

    QOTD:

2 – Been referring a bunch of people (most likely lurkers).

Gary, I have to agree with Michael P (post 108), I am worried about your palate that you could find columbia Crest and the this other swill even close to the RIdge Lynton Springs (87 points) which is “REAL” wine. Maybe it is the new small glass hiding the flaws of these wines. Maybe that is the trick. If any of us are forced to drink swill like this we should to so the smallest orange Juice glass we have – - perhaps the oak monster can be subdued.

Gary, you mayu have to go back to the BIG glass so we can compare 2007 ratings to 2006.

Hey Gary…great episode, sorta. I agree with some of the folks’ posts I’ve been reading: There’s much more interesting 5-15$ wines to try besides these wines that are made in the 100 of thousand’s of cases. And somebody mentioned in a post that out of soooo many bottles produced, there are going to be a lot of variations from bottle to bottle. I’m not a snob, but I’m just not interested in chain grocery store or chain restaruant wine.

Secondly: That glass. I thought the purpose of the stem is to keep the warmth of your hand away from the tempurature of the wine (assuming you’re tasting wine at ideal temps). And when you’re down to the last taste, you can’t really get a good swirl and really experience the nose. I’ll try out one of those glasses if I get a chance though, but I’m not going to go buy one.

QOD: 1) My friend Danny showed me your show when I was over there for dinner. I think it was around episode 40 or 50. I’ve been hooked ever sense. But, I’m not a huge fan of computer’s, so I just watch while I’m on my lunch break at work, and that means I always catch the previous day’s episode. Part 2) I’ve referred a few people. My friends Dale and Lars always watch and I’ve told other folks, but I don’t know if I bothered. Part 3) Not applicable. But, I’m not one of those people (like you) who shouts it out to the world. I just tell people who I think would really get it. I like your sense of humor and the fact that you looove wine, but you’re not a wine snob.

OK…again, I’m gonna root for your Jets against the Patriots (c’mon, they’ve got 3 Super Bowl championships after losing to both the Bears and the Packers in previous SB’s…eww, did I just give props to the Packers?!?!?!?) So ya, I have no urge to see the Patriots in the Super Bowl. Every other team would be a nice mix though. Bears/Jets would be great.

OK…see you later, take care man. GO BEARS!!!!

Looks like I can buy a featured wine. Stopping by later to pick up my very own 2005 Boekenhoutskloof Wolf Trap. Awesome.

QOTD: I heard about Wine Library (the physical store) from my dad. He knows your father (my dad got your dad interested in chickens. I know. I’m sorry for that). He convinced me to purchase my wines at Wine Library instead of an unnamed store in Madison. From there I discovered the web site and Wine Library TV.

Found WLTV via Digg.com/Podcasts when i searched for “wine” you are the number 1 wine podcast!

Enjoy the energy of the show and the sheer volume of episodes! Also as a techie im drawn to your cool website. Comments on episodes, forums, and ask section are all features that are a great way for a new viewer to check out what established viewers think of a show and have helped me become a regular viewer to WLTV. Im kind of suprised that there are so few diggs for WLTV. Searching this page i found no one mentioned Digg!

You should get everyone to Digg your podcast! (You can digg a podcast or individual episodes.)
A direct link to the show’s main page on digg – http://digg.com/podcasts/Wine_Library_TV

Get this show above a sad 59 diggs…

I would have just watched your show on digg, but then you started waving your arms and pointing to links that digg doesnt show! WTF? Ok, guess i gotta go check out the webpage…. Oh cool layout! Much better, Gary doesnt seem as crazy now!

A friend of mine told me about Wine Library years ago, and I saw the billboard on Rt 78 (I think it was 78), but never stopped in. Then a different friend told me about the Manor Wine Tasting a few months ago, and that is how it all started for me! I went online a few days later, saw Wine Library TV and was hooked! Wish I listened to my other friend years ago.

    WOW!
    What TVWL social terroir!

I want to thank all of you for reading my posting.
    I am truly flattered!

Now, the quote I gave at the top of my posting was word-for-word
what GARY said after sampling the first three of these wines. It’s
not my quote. It was rather strange that right after Gary said this,
I paused the “tape” and composed my comment. Then, I came back
and listened to the final review…

And guess what Gary went and did.

Yup, he sang all sorts of praises on this cheap-but-good bacon
flavored $7 Boekenhoutskloof Wolf Trap! Geeeeez….

Needless to say: I went to THREE wine stores in the Twin Cities
last night and looked for this wine. No dice. And our stupid
Minnesota prude state has effectively threatened TVWL from shipping
here – so that option is out also…

Whatever happened to our Libertarian laws which prevent the
government from opening our mail without a warrant?

    Anyway…

    1. Thank you Brandon for your reply.

    2. Dan C.: Thank you so much for taking the time to recommend
    all those cheap-but-goods.

    3. Katonah Dave… OK

    4. Chito, thanks for the flame.

    5. Matt, get back to work.

    6. And Gary, thank you – you KNOW I’m your bud.

    Many interesting restaurants in Providence:
Al Forno is a ***** … not sure the best value, but very well known
Mill Tavern on South Main I tried about 4 months ago…food was very good and reasonable wine list
Federal Hill has several Italian restaurants if interested .. some have a fairly extensive wine list.
If into French .. try Pot au feu … traditional French food and wine.

I saw some suggestions for Cafe Nuovo and others as well … all of these are either in walking distance or fairly short cab ride from downtown Providence.

Need more suggestions … send me an email … good luck on Sunday! (Although I have to admit ..that free shipping code came in very handy the last time :-)

    (1) Grappa Restaurant in Providence.
    (2) Learned of WLTV via e-mail from your master site.
    (3) Made about 20 recommendations, e.g. my kids, my sister, wine-drinking friends.
    (4) Feedback from these folks is that they would watch more regularly, but recently some of your shows have been a little long. A friendly suggestion is that you keep them about 10 to 12 minutes to hook people as regulars. Otherwise you’ll wear them out and they will go away.

Two things: I like seeing you use the tasting glass and have been considering getting one. You’ve convinced me.

QOD 1 – I’ve been shopping at WL for a long time and buy on-line. Saw the link, watched, got hooked.
QOD 2 – Lots of people, can’t count the number. Some watch and lurk, some don’t. Haven’t seen any I recognize in the comments or forums.

This show needed the Rex Goliath. You can’t beat ‘His Royal Majesty’ for 7 bucks. I’m waiting for their Shiraz to be widely distributed – already good press.

I found out about Wine Library and then Wine Library TV (via the Bertani Amarone ‘watch the video for this product’ link) through ‘WineZap.com’. You had the best price, but the video encouraged me to buy the Allegrini instead (I had tasted a different vintage of the Bertani already) and here ever since, my self-described ‘Dickhead’ friend.

Gary,I have to believe many wines are fake. When I smell or taste obvious vanilla (or is it vanillin) in wine it has become a turnoff. So many low priced wines have this dominant flaw because the actual wine has no character. Hi end wines with this taste(smell)are Silver Oak and Clio to name a couple. Fast food has flavorings to make every restaurant in a chain taste the same, wine seems to be folowing this trend. One thing I used to do to make bad wines drinkable is to blend a low acid, sweet ca. cab. with a high acid, tart Italian wine to sort of end up with a super Tuscan under $8. Thanks for your show Gary, I’m hooked!

Gary — (friended you on FB a few days ago) — I just had the Wolf Trap last night (didn’t get through you guys, but you’re even cheaper!!!), and wow. Just wow. When I first opened it the nose was berries (the type, I couldn’t tell), rolled in white pepper, but on day 2, it softened to bacon. Finish was a little hot at first, but that softened too. Absolutely a great bottle, I also rated 89.5, and then saw your review, and I feel pretty good that you felt about the same. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK

Not sure how I missed that you’d already done this (so go right on ignoring my facebook message; must be I searched on “wolftrap” and not “wolf trap”), but I’m pleased to see that you adored the Wolf Trap as much as I did. I rang it up as a 88 without giving any ‘brownie points’ for QPR. If there was some possibility that this wine would lay down for a few years, I can see upping it a point or two, but as much as I wanted to drop the 89 or 90 on this, I couldn’t go that far.
