Wines tasted in this episode:

Petite Sirah is it the same as Syrah? Is Petite Sirah bigger or smaller then Syrah? Is Petite Sirah the same as Durif? All these questions and more will be answered by a sad Gary Vaynerchuk.

Gary: I lived in Baltimore in 1969. I was 8 years old and Johnny Unitas was (still is) my hero. It was bad enough when the Mets beat the O’s in the World Series, but I nearly died when the Jets won the Superbowl.

QOTD: In ‘69 I drowned my sorrows in a tall glass of Dr. Pepper – mostly red fruit carried by light bubbles up front, then a hint of pepper, with by a black cherry finish. Good drinking. Today I’d take two bottles of a young, massive red. Find some juice that will really blow your bolt. Remember the Torbreck, The Factor? Pull the scab off of one bottle, tuck into some lamb chops and the world will be a better place. Then put away the other bottle and don’t drink it until the Jets win the AFC (or beat the Pat’s, if you’re into revenge). Like the Jets, The Factor will only get better – so tonight you should think about how sweet that victory will taste.

    Cheers.

    THE WHITEBOARD HAS BEEN ERASED!

    Nobody mentioned the whiteboard!
See, I knew had something to do with the Jets “season”.

Hey Big Kahuna: You got chutzpah – great post

QOTD: I like Rick Q’s comment – It’s more about QUANTITY.

    Take care Gary.
Remeber: We ARE changing the wine world!

    Gary:

I am so surprized you did an episode at all today, what with the travel and the depression of the trip. I was shocked to see an episode….and a GREAT episode featuring Petit Sirah!!! I was waiting for this.

I disagree with Brandon on the Petrus. When you are down, you cannot get up for a great wine and it would be wasted. Remember what a downer it was to see Miles drink his ‘61 Cheval Blanc being totally down – - when he should have drank it happily with Maya? What a waste of ‘61 Cheval. Never drink a profound wine when you are in the pits. In fact, you should re-review the Quixote when you are skying and see if it is even better.

I go with something simple and comforting when I am down, something that does not require much burdon of thought. Same with the evening. Cuddle on the couch with Lizzy, with a Barbera, Crozes- Hermitage, Cotes du Rhone, Zin, or Morgon/Fluerie/Moulin-a-Vent and watch Westside Story.

    Better luck in the draft,
    Joe

Gary, I watched a pro football game only because its your team….I haven’t watched many since the Browns left Cleveland for Baltimore….things will get better each day….Qotd….A good martini is nice when you are happy or sad….Thanks for the show on Petit Sirah….How did you rate the Bogle that you mentioned?

1 minute into the episode and I can see you need a hug Gary. Sorry about the loss. The Jets did great this year, superbowl or not. Now for the love of grapes, become the Vayner-Freak we love so much again. Mopey GV just wont cut it. Hell, the WineTasteTV lady is more interesting.

I am heading back to finish the episode now. Hoefully you will get your act together before its over. ;)

    Uncle Josh

BTW, you are a splitting image of my grand father Lou. It’s like looking right into the past at my favorite person ever.

Finally! An episode with some class and respect for the wine culture.

NOT! Put on a DVD of Broadway Joe and his boys. At least you were in the playoffs and have won a Super Bowl. The Mighty Vikes…no playoffs and 0-4 in the SB. Buck up, my friend.

QOTD: Cheap Port and a lot of it.

I thought wile you were spitting the Marietta you were going to start sobbing with your head in the bucket. At least you aren’t a Rams fan like me. The Jets played some great football this year unlike my team.

Wow – that was like watching some GV wannabe. You can’t honestly be that sad. I bet you busted up right after the camera cut. Come on! The mourning is over, time to come back in full force next episode! You have an opportunity to show the world that you can rise above the disappointment and get back to wine – with a big “VAY…….NER…………….CHUK!!!”

No, don’t listen to Anne. Don’t use that tasting glass, please!

    :)

Hey Gary i watched the game and was going for your jets. I am sorry that they lost however next year is another year. I hope sooner than later we get the other Gary back. Cheer up my friend it will get better lol.

    QOTD:
-It really depends how sad you are. Usually I will go for one of the nice bottles in the collection to cheer me up.

Anne….you not going to the Forum for that reason is also childish.

  14. January 8, 2007

    Anne

I just can not believe that you are not using your tasting glass. I also can not believe the outrageous attitudes about it. This is the reason that I will not go to the forums. Its just childish. It is just a glass people! Use the glass that you want!

I can’t remember the last time I was TRULY sad. If I was TRULY sad I would go grab a bottle of Petrus and devour it!

Hey that was a particularly good Wine Spectator video blog….huh?….It was WLTV?…Really?

Ah, If you didn’t feel so crappy after they lost, you wouldn’t feel so damn good when they won. Don’t the Jets have like $28 million in cap room and three very high draft picks? No tears for Gang Green from me! Get ready for a 10-6 team’s schedule next year!
And even with all of that morosity (moroseness?), you started coming alive when you tasted the wines.

  17. January 8, 2007

    Victoria

    Oh Gary………we feel your pain!!!!!
Drink whatever you like most……and spend time with those you love.
    It sucks to be sad…………….

    Funniest thing I ever saw.

Congratulations on a great Jets season. The future is bright.

    Robert F

Man, that was rough. Now I’m sad. QOTD – when I’m sad I reach for a late bottled vintage port – Taylor Fladgate or Fonseca. If I’m REALLY sad, I get some gorgonzola to go with it.

  20. January 8, 2007

    organicguy

Buck up my good man…fill your glass with champagne and toast to a winning season, hope for good draft picks and a healthy year!!!

  21. January 8, 2007

    Celia

    lol!!
    Poor baby!
When I’m sad – well, at 5 foot nothing and 110 lbs, just about anything will do the trick.

(((Can we have the ‘ole gary back??)))

Thanks for showing up, I know you must be pretty down. I liked the episode, as a contrast to your normal self it was actually enjoyable if not a little funny.

QOD: Maybe you should crack a Cueva Del Contador or something else with a special place in your heart, or just grab anything wet and down the bottle.

  23. January 8, 2007

    KAHUNA

HAHAHAHAHAHAH – Glad your down in the dumps- If I could I would hit you on the head with a bottle of Ridge Lytton Springs just to keep you down in the dumps. If you were a real Jets fan you would stay in mourning all week. No smiles No happiness – time to put the framed photo of Eric Mangiboobs back in the night stand drawer.

Its over men Belicheck dropped the big one- Was it over when Brady threw dart after dart – you bet it was- Was it over when Chad lobbed incomplete after incomplete you bet it was-

Now go grab your Strawberry Shortcake doll, your little Nintendo Wii controller and go sulk in the corner of the room. Oh yeah and Santa Clause is fake so there now I hope all your childish fantasies are put in a little coffin and burried- And I ate the Easter Bunny in a nice ragu over rigatoni.

And thanks for the Petite episode you know they are my favorites!

Hey, Dude, it’s not the end of the world. The fans of 31 NFL teams are disappointed every season. When I’m feeling down, I like to drink 1999 Grant Burge Holy Trinity. Always makes me feel better. Since I drank my last bottle, I feel sad about that. Gotta find something else to replace it. I think I’ll start today.

  25. January 8, 2007

    Sean

sorry about the jets man… I’ve grown up with the Vancouver Canucks and the Seattle Seahawks – I’m used to teams getting knocked out, so I feel for ya’.

when I’m sad? the best wine I can lay my hands on… one that reminds me there are good things in life.

… and like Justin said, maybe a Champagne – it the Disneyland of booze: the happiest drink on earth. :)
