    mikeyrad

maybe I’m missing something here, but it seems more useful to tag aspects of the wine rather than the label. The ultimate usage would be to be able to search, “old world”, “pepper”, and “strawberry jam” and get a list of wines that have all three tags in common.

  47. January 9, 2007

    AnthonyS

I think the idea is excellent. A lot of people may have an easier time remembering the pictures or some aspect of the label of a wine they enjoyed, rather than the actual name. This provides a great opportunity for a person to possibly fine a wine they thougth they’d never see again.

  48. January 9, 2007

    Riezin

I guess the sav blanc is an exception to the rule – generally speaking, there is an inverse ratio between the presence of cartoon animals and the quality of the juice. My favorite similar exception is Flying Goat – they make an awesome cali pinot. Goats du Roam is also apparently respectable so maybe there’s a goat exception out there somewhere….

This is an interesting episode for me because my bias is usually that if it has a funny or creative wine label, then the wine must suck and they’re trying to compensate the terrible junk in the bottle i.e. yellowtail (cute label) versus ridge (the wine speaks for itself).

  51. January 9, 2007

Gary, I was so happy to see you back to being yourself today. I just did a marathon session of watching the last 7 WLTV episodes (have been so busy didn’t have time to watch).

Love that Ian picked today’s wines. I met Ian in person yesterday, really terrific guy! I’m looking forward to his Burgundy picks for me.

One very, very rare negative comment I have to make Gary . . . can’t believe you gave into peer pressure and are not tasting from the tasting glass you wanted to do “all future tastings with”. One of the things I love about you and WLTV is that you don’t care what other say or think, and you march to your own drum. I was saddened to see you let the haters out there dictate your glass choice.

Really loved having you “back” today!!!

Taggy Vaynerchuk, Great show but I’m afraid of technology. Its like La Befana, if you don’t tag enough you get coal in your stocking. I’m not down with tagging, I’ve tagged before but I didn’t inhale. And one time I had a pregnancy scare because I tagged without protection. But still you guys have fun and tag at will, yah know its your life to live. and some day when your in your eighties and you have grand kids you can tell’em about the good old days when you used to tag cat piss all over New Zealand.

    Welcome back Cotter!

PS: Catchy wine label of the century -Meeker Handprint Merlot-you know what I’m talkin’ about ladies

    glenn

glad you’re back! Go Chargers was subtle.

you can’t keep referring to it as “the label”. i do this around my Napa wine professional g-friend and she and her friends always correct me – it is “the package”: bottle, cork and label they consider en masse.

i’ll try to get her to send you a book she reps called “Icon” – lots of cool label stories.

I Knew you would bounce back. Good wine improves every mood.

About tags – they could be very useful. I’ll start checking some out.

But I’ve got a question about labels. You mentioned that some people collect them. I don’t exactly collect them, but I like to get them off and write notes about nose, taste, price, etc. This is usually easy to do with “most” European labels. However, the glue on US and some Aussie labels defies easy extraction. I’ve tried acid, ammonia, steam, scotch tape and a knife blade and I usually end up with a soggy, sticky mess. I suppose I could take a picture and then print out a facsimile, but I certainly would like to find an easy way to remove and save them. Any suggestions?

  71. January 10, 2007

    hinrgman

    Gary

Your Simpsons cup is up to $2575

You can buy lots of wine for that price

  72. January 10, 2007

    Nico

I like the labels idea… this is cool and smart!

we should suggest tag conventions, maybe funny ones: “overrated”, “underrated”, “steal”, “VaynerPAZZZZ”

    GREAT GREAT episode, Gary!
    -Nico

  73. January 10, 2007

    damnitgigi

Damnit I love you Gary! I’d like to hear more about the screw tops! I’m a huge fan of them, and I’m awaiting the revolution.

  74. January 10, 2007

    Michael

I like the idea of labels. You should allow people to browse through labels randomly or in categories (cab, shiraz, merlot, etc).

  75. January 10, 2007

    ThomasS

Clever move Gary (but, where the heck is Hulk? Did not survive your sorrow on the Jets’ loss?)!
Anyway, the tags, good idea as brand marketing is not even just a new world thing. In Europe most labels are boring and made without any imagination. All these supposed ‘chateaux’ on these labels … I even do not look at them anymore, except for Lagrange St. Julien of course, but I think it’s just because this is my favourite Bordeaux. Yet, maybe … there is something intriguing with the label: the diagonal created because of the sole tower of chateau Lagrange grasps your attention right away. It is one of the only Bordeaux bottles that begs for attention when lined up on a shelf with some others (and Haut-Brion also of course, but that’s because of the bottle). Everything is the difference … .
Anyway, the wines I already tagged (I will tag some more, if I have the time): Kanonkop Estate Pinotage and Longo’s Cacc’E Mmite di Lucera. Why? Because I think both wines are really undervalued, mainly because of their underestimated core varietal. Why not doing an episode on Nero di Troia (Longo’s Cacc’E Mmite and Le Cruste, Torre Quarto’s Bottacio, Santa Lucia’s Le More Castel del Monte Riserva)? Or some pinotages to get rid of those stupid prejudices about bitterness (poor wine making) or Brett (something wrong with that?)?

  76. January 10, 2007

    dobs

Totally agree with Riezin (Comment 48) about how cute animals on the label typically mean mediocre wine. “Critter wines” should largely be avoided as the marketing ploy they are.

Speaking of critters, not sure what to make of Gary saying, “I like sheep,” on the same episode where he discusses his dating rating. Scary.

  77. January 10, 2007

    Lars

    Hold on a second, der.

Is the oak monster a bird? I wore a headset while listening to this episode and I swear that I could hear a bird in the background. Do you have a parakeet in the office? A green one I suppose.

Good to see ya back–all da way back.

    Lars

  78. January 10, 2007

    Justin

Are you sure that Chardonnay didn’t taste like a sweaty, naked Mario Lopez covered in butter in an oak room on a hot day? Yr tasting notes are insane buddy!!!!!

Glad yr back to full form. Now do a vertical tasting episode from one winery that compares mature vs. young wine. I’d super interested in how wine develops, but I haven’t been buying wine long enough to have a stocked cellar of old wine.

  79. January 10, 2007

    AlisonD

The only bottle of wine I can think that I tagged “handprint wine” is Meeker Handprint Merlot. The tag is already stated in the name but I had to actually go find the empty bottle I saved to find the name Meeker on it!. The wine wasn’t memorable to me but the bottle was….so I kept it. The big blob of different color paint/handprint made you think of finger painting as a kid..kind of fun!

  80. January 10, 2007

    Golf12235

Gary, good to see you back in top form, but why root for the Chargers? Do I detect a hint of anymosity towards my PATRIOTS? And a little advice: I wouldn’t talk so much about the sheep; people may start to wonder…

I tagged and commented on the Panarroz Red 2004 & Lagier Meredith Syrah Mount Veeder 2002. Both remind me of very tranquill moments and I really like the labels. I also tagged the Barmes Buecher Pinot Blanc Rosenberg 2001, only because it looked like a Schill. And I almost tagged one of the Siduri labels, but resisted; I figured that you probably wanted to keep this rated PG…but oh, the possibilities!

Glad to see you’re back in the saddle…GO PATS!

  81. January 10, 2007

    Tim Tamblin

I agree with comment #41 by Mikeyrad i.e., the notion of taggging by palate memory, as specific flavors we like are easy to remember and can be reiterated at a later date to those purveyors of like wines who can otherwise point us in an agreeable direction- think worm heads…

  82. January 10, 2007

So it’s a footbal show that just happens to be hosted by a wine genius? …got it. Nice to see the energy back, Gary. Remember, several very good teams didn’t even make the playoffs, i.e. the Bengals and the Broncos, so be proud of your Jets! And thanks for the Charger love.

Glad to have the ol’Gary V. back.

I love good labels. In fact I love all sorts of good graphic design. I have to admit that I am a bit of a sucker for a good label and would probably buy the better looking bottle and label if faced with a decision between a few different wines with which not familiar. A good website with lots of funny and/or strange labels if not entirely artistic ones can be found at

    http://www.winelabels.org/labels.htm.

    Hey Gary,

My favorite wine label is “Katrina ‘recovery’ merlot” Toad Hollow Vinyards.
Not only a nifty little label but the proceeds go to Gulf Coast survivor relief.

Thank God, Gary. I couldn’t take another damn episode like yesterday’s. Well, I tried to take one that I haven’t tried yet, but is close and dear to my heart. Aida Hurricane Cuvee Red. Welcome back with some energy!!!!

I love wines with great labels and names. I once bought Fat Bastard Shiraz because of the title. Also bought in a restaurant Big Yellow Cab (guess what kind that is) and then found out the label had a big yellow cab on it. Anything to grab our attention and hopefully our money.

  90. January 10, 2007

    Mitch

When you say the wine is tough to judge and that you want to come back to the Rafael Cambra Dos 2004 in a few years, does that mean you plan on doing periodic episodes in the years to come where you revisit such enigmas?

Will the Wine Library set aside some cases of such wines you label as wines that need to be revisited and sell them at the later date?

If the wine improves significantly and/or the producer gets hot, will you point out in the future what the then current price point is versus the price point from the original episode?

  91. January 10, 2007

    Tony S.

Hey Gary…good to see you’re back to normal. I have a bottle of the 2002 Red Car “Sugardaddy” Syrah, so I hope that’s as yummy as this latest one. Maybe I should pop that open soon.

I looked at your label thingy, and it seems neat. I’m not much of a computer guy, so I wasn’t really sure what it means to tag something. So I just looked at a couple labels. Mostly Mouton, since you were doing an art themed show today.

BUT, I gotta get back to work now. I’ll see you later man.

That reminds me of that Madiran again … loved the Ralph Steadman label, even though the wine itself was Oakland (with apologies to the good people of the East Bay).

Tagged: Marquis d’Alesme Becker and added a SCREWCAP tag (hey, there wasn’t much left to say about the Wolf Trap label).

I tried to comment but the boxes were way to the left of the screen and I could not type in them. I do not know if that is a screen res problem or not. I did add a few tags though!

I think this is a GREAT idea :)

The label site is great. I use “personal wine curator” tracking program which now lets you paste the label image into the program — so this may make it easier to track down some of the labels.

As far as fun labels, I purchased a zinfandel called “Poizin” that had a label of a blood-red skull and crossbones. Sure, it was a gimic, but the wine was actually pretty good.

Gary, keep up the great work! GO BEARS.

Gary said he’ll come to Biloxi if the Saints win Super Bowl.
I’m gonna hold him to it!

    GV,
Pumped about this — great job! To me this is another groundbreaking effort with the Wine Labels site on WL. I did a few quick searches on the site and looked at some things, but that’s all I have time for right now. It’s actually a rather scary because I have been collecting wine labels from memorable bottles (or not-so-great but just fun, distinctive bottles) for over fifteen years, and probably have several hundred — I’ve never counted. It’s turned out to be a great resource for going back and recovering thoughts on different things we’ve had for special occasions and for tastings. Cheers, CK

Thanks for this video, I have always loved to collect labels glad to hear I’m not the only one who enjoys to do this. It’s a great hobby, thanks for the video!

Is anyone having trouble playing this? It stops loading 1/4 of the way through–after the sauvignon blanc.

I like the label for “2005 Alexander Valley Vineyards Zinfandel Temptation”. You can see it at “www.liquorama.net/ProductImages/avvtemptation.jpg”.

People who understands bonsai knows that practices of wiring is used not to bind the tree and restrict growth, as is sometimes imagined, but to redirect growth.

Gary, how about getting a wine on the show that says chateau-chalon on the label?
