    It’s a LOAD of laundry.

Where can I find cassis berries? What do they taste/smell like?

I’ve already emailed several friends about a wine tasting. I think we’ll start with $20 PN’s.
Great idea, wineman. I have to figure out how not to have people bring the same pinot’s, tho. Do I make a list and have each choose from the list?

    Gary,
Never had a NZ Pinot, but… isn’t the new world where we’re supposed to find the value buys??? What’s up with the 30 bone pinot? I can actually find a tasty burgundy for that much! Are there any value pinots from New Zealand? Maybe something surprisingly delightful for 10-12 bucks? jp

QOTD: I’ve never tried NZ Pinot Noir. It’s good to see the recommendations here.

No laundry, Gary? Hopefully you have some other dreadful chore instead, like changing the cat litter…

    Celia,

Cassis is made from black currants. Cassis is the French name for currents. It is usually found as “Creme de Cassis”, a liquor. It is wonderful stuff. Most famously, it is used in making Kir Royale. Put about an oz of Creme de Cassis in a Champagne flute, top with Champagne (or your favorite sparkler) and you have one of the best cocktails ever. An ordinary Kir is Cassis mixed with a white wine – usually chardonney.

As to where to find the berries – I don’t know but get a good Creme de Cassis (the ones from Burgundy are the best) and you will have the taste that Gary talks about.

    Gary,

QOTD: I had an Amisfield 2003 last summer. It was pretty good, but I thought the Santa Rita PN’s out shown all the others except French Burgundy. I 2nd the notion of a tasting comparaing NZ, CA (Santa Barbra, Sonoma, etc.), Oregon, and France (and any other PN regions of note).

QOD: Well, I’ve had a Kim Crawford Pinot Noir, but quite frankly that didn’t impress me. However, this show has me intrigued and I will have to try some others that are apparently more interesting. Thanks again, Gary!

The only New Zealand pinot I’ve had was a B-Bque at the
end of summer, by Sherwood. I didn”t enjoy it, but who am I.
    Thundercats, oh yea, GO RAVENS!

100pt. tasting dinner, GV you @#$%in’ name-dropper. Hope you choked on your DRC, what about the children in Ethiopia? Sally Strothers would ashamed of you. Quite envious for sure.

QOTD: Tamar Ridge, a Robert Wale selection. Decent not great, a little awkward acidity. kind of like a low class Burgundy with a dash of vinegar and salt. What about the underipe thing for NZ pinots? Also Te Kairanga- would love to have your thoughts on it, the reserve or the regular?

QOD: Several years ago I had a spy vallet pinot-I think a full bottle at that time was only about 16 bucks. I remember I wasn’t very impressed-hot and one-dimensionable. WILL HAVE TO TRY AGAIN.

Gary, Gary, Garyâ?¦a die-hard Jets fan drinking Mouton Rothschild, Pichon Lalande, Sassicaia and La Tache all in one night?!? Canâ??t imagine Lars and other Norsemen types feeling it hereâ??maybe youâ??re actually a (post George Mikan) Lakers fan? Still, kudos to you for getting into this 100-pt event even if I’m damn jealous as I stare into my glass of Yellow Tail….

QOTD: I bought three bottles of Three Miners Central Otago Earnscleugh back in mid-Sept (Episode 58) but have not yet opened the first one. I’ll remedy that. Just pulled one out for tomorrow.

Good show but what’s up with never doing a load of laundry?

QOTD: 03 Three Miners it was awsome. After we had it we got a bottle for my parents. It’s a blast to share great wines with other wine lovers.

Had a Te Kairanga last summer (not much NZL pinot to be had ’round here) … not bad, a little gamier than I was expecting but different and pleasant, and loved the funky checkerboard label too.

    Great Show, yet again.

QOTD: 2005 Sileni Estate Pinot Noir, Hawke’s Bay, NZ.

Bought in Denmark for 12-13 US$. Great value for a PN with fruit balanced with some “old world” earthy tones and a certain dryness.

  • Good! Your wrestling puppet is back!

QOTD: A few months ago I went to a small fair organised for the personel of the university of Leuven to taste some wines and buy the selcted ones with our wine tasting group (Orbis “Fratres Organoleptici”). Huge disappointment: half of the merchants did not know anything about what they were selling. Just imagine: I tasted an Amours toujours of Allée Bleu (you definitely have to seek that one out, it’s outrageous) and asked what the blend was. The guy took the bottle and looked at the back label. There was nothing of that information on it. So he turned at his wife and said: “Honey do we actually have a booklet of this wine”. Gruesome. It makes me mad. They could as well have sold bottled horse pee and not knowing it. Is it so difficult to know just the basics about a wine when you have only 20 bottles on your table?
Anyway, QOTD: one of the merchants that really knew his stuff was the one of Ad Bibendum, a huge importer of Aussie and NZ wines in Belgium. I tasted some and bought a few bottles of Seresin’s Sauvignon Blanc and some of Pikes’ Shiraz (great). Just when I was going to leave the fair, that same guy came to me and said: “You know what, I have something more for you to taste”, and he opened a bottle of Seresin Estate Pinot Noir. I must say you that I am so sorry I tasted it: pure strawberry, damp leaves, rainwater, some cassis, a movingly silky mouthfeel and superb balance. It’s one of those wines you’d almost cry for. But I am sorry I tasted it: â?¬ 32 /bottle. A bit to much for my student budget. It’s high on my wish list however!

I’ve never had any wine from New Zealand and not a big Pinot fan (never purchased a bottle)

Regarding forming a WINE TASTING event: the Bay Area (Nor.Cal.) is [ironically] so lackluster for wine enthusiasts, I would dare not try. –>>There’s an online activity group here with 100’s of active members and someone posted a Wine Tasting event (at the house of a nice-looking female, no less) and only 2 people signed up for it (and one of them was me) so the event was cancelled. -that’s sad

Besides the ghetto-heads here, it’s predominantly polyannas. I miss the East Coast and the Big D.

I bought a Pinot Noir (New Zealand) limited edition wine kit (2004). I bottled it in 2005. Young it shows great promise. I was skeptical buying it because I had always drunk Ore or Cal Noirs. It was highly touted at the time so I took the plunge. I think it shows promise of being an incredible Pinot.
