My first favorite vintage wine was a 1982 Rodney Strong Pinot Noir. It was probably â€™85 or â€™86 when I had it. It was an oak monster but oak was a new flavor for me at the time and I loved it. I still appreciate a little oak.

A combination of Eau de armpit and mushroom soup makes for an intriguing EP Gary. However in my mind, the mystique surrounding the LONG-awaited heat episode continues (Tony?!?!). QOTD: The year of heavy concert-going for me. Ted Nugent’s Scream Dream tour, Ozzy Ozbourne’s Blizzard of Oz (and a little known band called Def Leppard opened up for them), and favorite moment was the ASIA concert where Carl Palmer did a 20 minute solo on a revolving drum set that had every last person in the place on their feet - amazing virtuosity even if people did think Heat of the Moment was trite. Unfortunately I have no great wine drinking memory from that year because I was just a junior in high school.

I was surprised that the wine wasn’t lighter in color? I’ve read that reds get lighter with age, and you would think that twenty years would be plenty of time to lighten it up a bit?

82? Its all a blur.

I dragged my Mac out to the kitchen, am sitting around getting some work done and eating dinner while watching episode #166 and you go and drop an A.J. Duhe bomb on me. There goes my appetite. I hope that Bordeaux was stored in an oven. ha. (kidding of course)

Lance Mehl? Of course I remember Lance Mehl. There were alot of great players on that ‘82 vintage Jets team: the NY Sack Exchange (Gastineau, Klecko, Lyons & Salaam), Freeman McNeil, Wesley Walker, Greg Buttle, Lam Jones, Pat Leahy… Unfortunately they were led by Richard Todd. Oh well.

But my favorite moment of ‘82 though was when the New York Islanders beat those Canucks for their 3rd straight Stanley Cup.

Actually, I don’t think this wine was heated enough to ruin the wine because if the wine was heated, the cork should pop out a little bit.

It wasn’t exactly 1982 but the show today sparked a similar memory. I opened a non-cellared ‘87 Lytton Springs Zinfandel last September for my wife’s B-day patry with a small group of wine friends and though drinkable, it was clearly on it’s way out. The fruit had that old barnyard jammy-ness with a hint of Port and what could almost have been described as TCA-ish(corked), but it wasn’t. There was a ton of sediment as it clearly wasn’t heavily fined or filtered, if at all. The brave souls who stepped up to the plate for a try found it a unique experience and did their best to sustain my fragile ego by complimenting what was redeemable about this otherwise terrific wine(I had this old vine beauty back in ‘89 when it was in it’s prime).

When all was said and done,(the bottle was consumed by 3 diehards)the consensus was that “it was what it was”. Clearly they were stoked to have been a part of tasting a piece of Sonoma County history as Ridge purchased Lytton Springs in ‘91. When I bought the wine, it came directly from their old barn style tasting room which was the way it used to be here. Having lived in this area since ‘75 I desperately miss the old tasting rooms(which were also the same buildings where the wines were made)as they were so delightful compared to the new, so called improved versions. I still have the ‘88 and ‘89 to quaff so we’ll see what waits in store…

Fun episode but I have had the opposite experience several times including several dried out ‘66 Ducru, 70 and 79 Pinchon Longueville. So it can go either way. Earlier writer asked about Cheval Blanc. Went to a vertical tasting of ‘59-94. The ‘70 was fabulous but the best was ‘76, the ‘82 was still a baby and definite infanticide there.

Best thing about ‘82 was my youngest son being born and going to work for a new medical practice.

Started the Family Business with my Dad, and my first daughter was born~! A great year. Dad’s retired and still puts an ice cube in his red wine but my daughter’ now a CPA and starting to appreciate good Pinot Noir even if it’s sometimes not from Oregon (rhymes with “Shotgun” not “bygone” so say I rode shotgun on the Oregon Trail.)

Great episode and I am sure someone above may have said the same thing, but to truly test how this wine held up after not being stored “correctly” is to taste it side by side with a 1982 that had. Even though the bottle you tasted had not gone bad or to vinegar does not mean it still is delivering the way it should or could.

I also think you should have opened and paused the tape and come back two hours later and given the wine a real chance to show itself. I bet you guys drank it later in the day…how was it??

Great episode. I’ve been priviledged to drink a lot of aged wines. They’re great! They can be a crap shoot, but if you stick to the bigger reputable auctions houses, they’re a pretty safe buy. Also reputable secondary retailors. I will not mention who I work for, but I do work in the secondary market. They have specialists that carefully inspect the wines and check their provenence. I know we turn down consignments where I work all of the time due to passive storage etc.

You’re right Gary. Wine is a lot tougher than people give it credit for.

QOTD: My wife and I got married. Like that ‘82 Bordeaux, we’re only getting better with age!

I’m glad the Raiders won’t be losing to the Jets next year! They may have beaten the Raiders in ‘82, but at least we won two super bowls that decade. (The Patriots must go down.)
