Gary, my first rated R movie was “The Godfather”, I was 12 when it came out. It did have a profound effect on my life and listening to Sinatra has never been the same.

Speaking of Biodynamic – can you do an episode where you taste Sinskey? I love Sinskey – the whole range,: Merlot, Cab Franc, and Pinot,

Wow, may be top 10. Was in the store today buying Pinino BDM and caught a glimpse of GV I believe right after they finished taping. This episode doesn’t do anything for me – bring back Ciera and Brunellos! Of course, walked out with way more than just 2 bt. of Pinino BDM, including some great cheese.

    Keep it coming!

  20. January 17, 2007

OK, top 20 – how lame! My first R-like movie was Goldfinger! Ratings didn’t exist as they do now back then. I’m giving away my age – and nowadays it would be PG-13!

QOD: Trading Places. I saw it in 1983 in the theaters when it came out. My aunt took my sisters and I. I think she had no idea. I have been in love with Jamie Lee Curtis since.

Isn’t bio-dynamic a form of Wikka? Actually I think its part of the Illuminati, and perhaps having something to do with Dan Brown and The Da Vinci Code and the big guy upstairs. Better call the Pope, something big is going on. Actually in all honesty the side trip of Indiana Jones after the Holy Grail was totally going to be exuming Rudolf Steiner, and grinding his fossilized liver- to increase domestic Merlot production (Spielberg loves his Merlot). No lie. Big ups for the Zind Humbrecht, loved it before the WS scores.

QOTD:I’ve never really gone above PG-13. I really am pure as the driven snow. Good luck sinners.

QOTD: Kentucky Fried Movie. Absolutely hilarious. Fistful of Yen, Catholic High school girls in trouble, Big Jim Slade. Some of the funniest spoofs ever. Senior Year in High School at the drive in. Didn’t drink wine back then. It was Lowenbrau Ponies! Remember those 8 ounce bottles! And yes, I was legal. The age was 18 in NY back then.

Such much to comment on this great episode!

Thanks for featuring such a diversity of wines. Alsace region; malbec and carmenere grapes. Though 3 out of 4 of the wines didn’t get the nod, you constantly show this wine newby new things about wine. Thanks Gary.

That little girl yesterday was such a crack up. She had Gary down!

    QOTD: I don’t remember.

Al Davis would be proud! Commitment to excellance is appreciated any where. Patiots must go down!

Live WLTV should be cool, for those with solid broadband connections. Time frame maybe tough but I will try and be involved. I heard a rumor that Mark Gastineau may be a guest!

QOTD: We snuck into a theater in an attempt to see Jaws but picked the wrong door and got into the middle of Coming Home. Ugh! Not what we little punks had in mind so we were nice enough to ruin it for all of those serious minded folks around us.

Live WLTV – have to see it, in action. Here are issues and suggestions:
    * Many times I am in meetings at 1:30 (PST), so may not be able to catch it live. I assume it will posted “unlive” after taping.
    * I like you focused on the wine at hand – so it may be distracting to see you split your focus (half on the wine you are drinking and half on the comments you are getting).
    * I think the real power of the live show would be to send out, 3 weeks ahead of time, the wines you are tasting for the live show. Then the east coasters, can leave work early, and can taste live with you – and compare notes live and live debate and chatter. Now that would be the huge benefit of live WLTV and worth leaving a meeting for!!!!!

Live Wine TV!!! I will be there. That’s 1:30 on the Left Coast. See you Friday.

Don’t they still grind horns and animal bones into wine and pour it on the ground during a full moon to be Diodynamic?

    GO BEARS!!!!

I can’t believe how many times I’ve heard that name in the last week… Zind-Humbrecht. This will definetly be the last hint that is required. I’m half expecting a bottle to drop out of the sky anytime now. If one does, I’ll let you know were I was standing.

Can’t wait for Friday. 4:30…. It’ll be a close one.

QOTD: I was far too young to see the movie and it ruined my childhood… things like clowns, fourune cookies, and bathtub drains. Thank you very much Mr. King for the warning. The movie was “It”

First R-rated movie? Man I don’t remember what I ate for dinner last night :)

QUOT: Probably “Porky’s” (the 80’s version of “American Pie,” but thinner plot) with Kim Catrall playing the deliciously named, “Miss Honeywell.” Yummmmmmmmmm.

Hey GV: Won’t be able to get to see your live show Friday thanks to the wife making other plans (I tried to cancel but got “the look”). As such, I’ll ask a question now that’s inspired by the biodynamic tasting. As director of operations, don’t you try a good fraction of the wines that WL carries? As such, why aren’t almost all bottles up to your standards (other than the white zins, something that needs no explanation)? You guys carry lots of great stuff but what goes through your head when you pan a serious wine (you stock) during WLTV? If you’ve answered this before, my bad. I’m still working back through the early episodes–often while drinking late at night when my recall isn’t the best.

Last thought: not to make excuses for the Clos Roche Blanche Touraine, but 2004 was awfully challenging for that part of the world. I’d bet anything that the ‘05 willl be loads better.

Gary, When I was 18 I worked briefly on a biodynamic farm in NJ of all places! It was called Genesis farm and was near Blairstown. One thing I think should be said about biodynamics is that most of the soil and plant treatments are really more similar to homeopathic remedies in that there is only a tiny amount of cow horn or whatev that is stirred many times into huge amount of water. It’s basically homepathic medicine that treats the whole system of the plants with the soil being most important. For anyone who believes in importance of terrior (uniqueness of place) biodynamics makes complete sense. Healthy soil and surrounding ecosystem helps wine to express itself and it’s terrior more clearly. I find it really exciting tha this movement is taking off as it is a remedy to wines becoming homogenous and “Michele Rolandized. “

Go Colts! Anything to see the Pats go down. And no team in the NFC can do anything about it. The Colts are my last hope. Gary, I voted for you for wine blog of the year. Good luck. You need more New York wine in the store! One day I will make top ten. Maybe.

Love the shows, but not sure what “live” brings to the table. Can a 30sec. delay really be considered live anyway? I mean, 30s gives you a really big oh s#%t window in case you blast out some obscenely offensive material and have to hit the dump button. I want to see the real GV that usually gets left on the cutting room floor (although the filter is set pretty low on Fridays). Maybe we can get Eric to put together a 2006 blooper reel? Anyway, definitely curious to see how the “live” show works out.

QOTD: Naked Gun, don’t remember which one though.

I love the idea of biodynamics so thanks for the show. I think its great because all those pesticides, chemical fertilizers, etc arent going into the grapes and then into me. Also I have tremendous respect because without those treatments they are so much more vulnerable. If you are someone who thinks wine is made in the vineyard more than the winery, you gotta appreciate those folks. QOTD – dunno, maybe original Texas Chainsaw?

Ok, newbie here. Do you guys sit around and wait to see who can post first after the show? I don’t mean to step on any toes but, get a life!

First R rated movie, Porky’s 1982, saw it in ‘84, 4 years old. Awesome then, awesome now!

    Dave-from-Katonah

Live WLTV would be good, but I’ll be working until about 8pm, bummer! Hope to see the usual vlog after the fact…

It could be great, especially if (as Joe’s Comment 32 said) the wines were made public sev wks in advance, then we east coasters could do a simul cam type tasting and comment along with the VaynerchukMeister. It would also be great to do it a bit later, say 9pm EST. That way we all could get the full effect of LIVE WLTV, but I know you also have a wife and a life away from the Vayniac-Nation.

QOTD – who can remember 30+ yrs ago? Maybe Blazing Saddles?

  58. January 17, 2007

    Nicole

Great show. I actually posted a question asking about organic (not the same as biodynamic, I know) grape farming last week and was really glad to hear that a lot of producers are turning away from chemicals. After living near a producer who used an unbelievable amount of chemical sprays, I’ve not only tried to drink (at least) organic, but also wondered what the industry standard is.

QOTD: I’ll preface by saying that I actually had great parents who really thought this was a movie just about dancing. Saturday Night Fever, 1977, I was in 3rd grade. I was the most popular girl in school for a while after that.

Fun show. Shame about the CRB Cot, but the Cabernet still rocks. I’d stand by it, if I had any left.

And, counterargument: the bodacious, beastly Clos Montirius Vacqueyras from Episode 36 is biodynamic, I think.

QOD: Alien, at the tender age of 6.

Hey, Gary, again, and as always, great episode. Thank you for educating me on byodynamic farming. Knew nothing about it when I logged on, now know more than I did. Thanks. QOD: ‘M.A.S.H.’ I was under-age and with some friends at a little local theater in Riverside, California. I felt ’so adult’, yet didn’t get most of the adult innuendos. Thinking about it now, I’ve gotta laugh!

Nice episode….sad to hear about the Dianna Madeliene as I purchased some at the winery. Might have to crack it and see if I agree with you. If not, I’ll let you know.

oops forgot QOTD…. Well as my parents were very liberal I was never prevented from seeing anything they did which in terms of R ratings was mainly sex (Saturday Night Fever, All That Jazz, Officer And Gentleman, Urban Cowboy, etc…. ) First R film I remember seeing that I really should not have was Friday the 13th in theater for my brothers birthday, I was only 8! Needless to say, It totally freaked me out and still can’t see horror films, fortunately I have no problem with well made porn ;)

I’m not sure what the first R rated movie I saw was but
For some reason I think it was Fast Times AT Ridgemont High.
I had a Zind Humbrecht Riesling; I don’t know what vintage but
it reminded me of a slightly overdone pineapple upside down cake,
it was awsome. I’m taking lunch late on Friday, hope to see you live!

Thanks, Gary, for this episode. I have long been a “back to nature” kind of person and opt for the organic route whenever I can. I’m not willing to make that jump as eagerly into the organic wine world. I will definitely try the reisling.

QOD: I can’t remember which I saw first, but it was one of these three:
Summer of ‘42 (originally an “R”)
    The Exorcist
    The Godfather

    Really looking forward to Friday!

    QOD.. the excorcist.

When I was 5 or 6. I didn’t even remember the name of it until I saw it years later and discovered that it was the film that freaked me out so much when I was younger!! The head spinning and the demonic voices had me cringing. Yikes!

Great topic.. I love seeing all the different cultures in Winemaking. Can’t wait for “Wine Live TV”!!

Hey Gary great episode I learned a lot I didnt know about the biodynamics. The wonderful thought of cow head is great LOL. I wont be able to join you live so i am upset but i am sure it will be a great episode.

To Drewnoir 24: That’s the sulfur dioxide they use to sterilize er, preserve the wine. It’s sometimes rotten eggy, but if you smell sulfur it’s used to stop mold from growing on (no doubt) purchased fruit. Gunpowder, matches, etc. Gary, part of bio-dynamicysm involves burying a chicken bone on the eve of a full moon…don’t know what it does, but you should see my tomatoes in the summer! QOTD: Phantasm at Blue Star in Watchung with my brother and his friend, they didn’t want to take me, but I was a very persuasive 11 yr old. (Actually had the dirt on him and his girlfriend he-he)

    Gary:

Interesting topic – adds some context to the usual swirl and spit. It would be interesting if you continued to explore various aspects of winemaking and viticulture. For example, an episode comparing Napa cabs from various terroirs – is it possible to taste the difference between mountainsideand valley grapes? A little more detail re the varietals used in red blends would also be interesting. Assuming you’re still at this during the ‘07 crush, I’d like to see an episode where you taste the fresh grapes side-by-side with the wines that use those grapes. For many of us who haven’t spent time in vineyards and wineries, this would illuminate much of the creativity that inpsires winemaking.

Live WLTV seems to contradict a basic principle of a video blog – it’s uncoupled from real time. Nevertheless, I’m looking forward to seeing how you manage the frenzy of messages on Friday.

    QOTD: Cuckoo’s Nest. Nicholson’s best.

Nice episode. There are really few producers from Alsace that command as much respect (or as much money) as Z-H….and for good reason. Never had a bad bottle from them. Olivier is a interesting person, the only MW that has a Grand Cru Vinyard, and even the first Frenchman to get a MW(I believe) and he is really helping the wine world and it’s natural proponents.

Interesting show Gary. I used to lobby for the biotechnology industry and learned a LOT about biodynamic and organic farming. I, too, like the idea of wineries attempting to be green.

QOTD: If memory serves, I saw my first R-rated in 1978 at the ripe age of 12. It was Blue Collar with Richard Pryor.

    Fast Times at Ridgmont High.
I was 12 and my Brother and his friends were 16. He had to ask someone to buy tickets for us at the theater.

Vanishing point, 1971. Thanks for scaring the hell out me, G. Never really thought about it before….to think I’m 8 maybe 9 years old watching my first R rated movie. Oh the perks of knowing the theatre owners in a small town. I had to lmao @ Comment 25: By John Blue Label.. holy crap, forgot all about that one.

Okay, here goes. Circa 1960 and I’m with the gang-of-four, Phillip, his younger brother Sammy, Tommy and me. We have just watched some cartoon movie at the Roxie Theater, a one screen theater house in NorCal. Since we had plenty of candy left that we had bought next door at Sears, we decided to stay for the next show. a show that all of the town was abuzz about. This risque movie was called Summer Place. So we sneak up into the Lodges and hide until the movie starts. A Summer Place starring Sandra Dee and who cared about the other actors. Did they really stay out all night together? Wow!

    Ciao,

Stong Show. Appreciate your honesty and dogging some of the wines sold at winelibrary that you don’t appreciate. 1st R rated movie was one of the Police Academies with good old Bobcat.

Olivier Humbrecht is a major force in wine. Love the Zinds–could be my favorite producer. Good job spreading the word.

Pardon me for getting passionate here. The theory behind Biodynamics — like Homeopathy — is utter hogwash. I get mad when I hear this crap. It’s anti-science, anti-reason nonsense invented by a delusional Aryan mystic. I don’t understand why intelligent people don’t get offended by it. I’m offended.

Beyond being merely offended, I feel it’s dangerous to promote Biodynamics. It’s NOT OK to treat irrational beliefs as just one more thing worthy of intelligent debate. This country and our kids need more and better science education; Biodynamics, Homeopathy, Astrology, New-Age Mysticism and Creationism teach the absolute worst lessons.

That’s not to say the the wines can’t be good. Hey, the vines get a lot of TLC. But promoting the nonsense behind it is very uncool.

QOTD. “Bonnie & Clyde” was probably my first R rated movie. As a college student I saw “Last Tango” with my parents. Scarred me for life.

Went to Quntessa to see their biodynamic farming methods and was very impressed. The wines were equally impressive, some of the better cabs I have tasted but somewhat high priced with limited availability. That said I bought a case from 3 vintages at the winery and am going back there in February to see how they have done over the winter. Are there any other biodynamic viinyards in the US that one can tour or do tastings?

QOD: First R rating has to be The Exorcist and I’m an old guy!

Going to buy some Humbrecht tomorrow.

Late comment … too much work :-( . Anyway, nice episode: good idea to talk about that. Still, I don’t know what to think of all this biodynamic talk. So difficult to find some good information about it. Is it really that ‘homeopatic’, what’s the ecological reasoning behind it and what’s the link with commercial discourse? I dunno, … it really seems a bit awkward to me, all that jibberjabber about mooncycles, climate karma and all that. Reminds me in of the similar paths of the Monodvino-winemakers, wineconsultants, … ; so, is it really true that those wines HAVE more TERROIR? Not in my experience (yet that’s a very limited one).
QOTD: what R-movie, never known anything about R’s, or S’s, or T’s, … Just watched everything, nothing so exciting about that … What about your first R-wine? :-D

I think the first R-rated movie I saw was “Porky’s”, unless “Jaws” (the original) was an “R” movie.

Mark Block, I understand your skeptisism and think it’s healthy. However just because modern science doesn’t give it’s seal of approval do you really think that is enough to dismiss something? “Modern science”
is a very young thing and is not infallable. The Tibetans have had words for the parts of atoms for at least a thousand years (probobly longer )and understood that matter is not a fixed “thing” but actually just movement, energy. Quantum physics has only recently figured this out. There are new ideas in science that would seem to support the ideas behind biodynamics mainly that everthing in the environment is interconnected so yes the seasons, moon cycle and even the animals in the vineyard have an effect on neverything else. It’s good not to beleive everything you hear but it is als oimportant to keep an open mind, non?

Wow Gary, you’re a great guy and everything but holy shit i cant believe some guy paid over $2500 for a simpson’s cup you wrote on, my god. when I think of the amount of wines or what kind of wines I could have bought with that kinda dough, or even the bills you could pay, its almost hard to believe. with that said, obviously that guy is looking for people to just give free money to, so buddy feel free to post a comment of how to get in contact w you so you can just throw a couple thousand my way.
