Something is wrong…Error establishing a database connection
This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can’t contact the database server at dbs.winelibrary.com. This could mean your host’s database server is down.

Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
Are you sure that you have typed the correct hostname?
Are you sure that the database server is running?
If you’re unsure what these terms mean you should probably contact your host. If you still need help you can always visit the WordPress Support Forums.

What? You don’t see the video? It’s amazing, right now GaryV is interviewing Robert Parker about this year’s Bordeaux futures and they’ve got a few barrel samples to taste through. After that, GaryV said he plans on having a quick entertainment piece with the Dave Matthews band live in studio. I think Dave even brought some of his own wines to taste. I’ll keep you updated.

I hope it’s not as big of a bust as the Victoria’s Secret superbowl half time show. No pun intended.

  55. January 19, 2007

    Mark Block

Isn’t this what happened when Victoria’s Secret tried a live fashion show over the Internet? And didn’t the great Steve Jobs have trouble the first time Apple tried a live stream of a Jobs keynote. Now we have a new episode in server meltdowns: a guy spitting out wine in front of a locked off camera with the charisma of Steve Jobs and the sex appeal of models in underwear.

Guess we all hit Gary’s servers a bit too hard today. I’m sure he did everything he could to work the bugs out before today’s debut. I’ll check back again L8R.

  57. January 19, 2007

    Matthew L

I give a brother some love for trying. Given that it’s the first time attempting to go live, let’s cut the WLTV folks some slack. I agree with Lawrence…let’s all uncork a bottle and comment *live* on what we’re drinking. Seems only fair to serve as a wingmen/women at this time.

I was hoping to see how things worked out since I am considering doing live shows on eBob. I see that things aren’t working to well for you. I guess I won’t be trying to implement live TV on eBob any time soon. Work out the kinks and call me when you are going to try again.

  80. January 19, 2007

    Lawrence Leichtman

Well, I had a bottle of Dunn Howell Mountain 1985 Cab uncorked just for this occasion. 21 years this is still a huge wine. Nose of cedar, blackberries, some other dark fruit I can’t identify (probably Gary’s cassis), opened one of these 2 years ago and it hadn’t come together, it has now the tannis are finally calm alcohol at 14.6% but don’t feel it, Ths is a great wine! Worth the wait but I’m too old to buy any more of this.

  81. January 19, 2007

    Wine-o

At what point do you write it off?

  82. January 19, 2007

I’m getting paid either way….Wooo Hooo…I would love to be fly on the wall in Gary’s office right now…He is probably like Trump saying “You’re Fired” Ok time to open something good up…I’m thinking about Oliver Hill Pinot…96 RP rating…I’ll let you guys know…Good luck Gary and team…I’m sure the next posting will explain everything…

  83. January 19, 2007

    Phil B

Good initiative Matthew L… Spending the year in Spain, I was able to find a bottle or Ercavio REserva 2001 (Gary commented on the 2004 regular cuvée lately….)Assemblage is Tempranillo and Merlot (as opposed to Tempranillo only for the bottle GV had…)Opened it tonite… Good nose, blackcurrant, cherries…Good mouthfeel, silky and mature tannins but the finish falls a little short. 87 points, but well worth the 7 euros it cost me!

Tangoroa…surely you jest. I think we can be a bit hard on Gary. If the show is late, people complain. If Gary doesn’t tape a show for a day or two, people need seemingly are typing from a bed in ICU recovering for apoplexia. At the end of the day, I, like many others, miss the show when it’s not on; but, hey…it’s something Gary does for FREE and I am appreciate for what I get (when I get it).

In the tradition of Adam from Mythbusters I give it a 50% chance of giving up & taping a new apology episode of WLTV, a 30% chance of it working hours later after people start giving up on it, and a 20% chance of the server bursting into flames and having absolutely no WLTV for the next few weeks

just had a little blind tasting with the wife (as she walked in the door from work). Decanted a 2004 Pinot from Jipe winery in New Zealand and kept the other bottle unopened (same wine). 10 bucks it cost me… what a difference the decanting made! The nose, taste everything was better! Imagine doing this to say… a nice 50$ Shiraz from Two hands.

    Drewnior24

    I’m so hammered!!!

  133. January 19, 2007

    cgf

I knew this was going to be a hoax. For anyone who doesn’t get Gary’s sense of humor and fondness for elaborate drawn-out jokes go watch episode # 69.

Laughing on the inside. Enjoy your vacation. I will let my fiancee know to look out for a really short and loud Jersey guy in Naples, FL.

    see you in a week.

  134. January 19, 2007

    acousticdoc

Looks like he’ll be doing another Petit Syrah episode.

    Wayne530,

    Good job!
But when I go there, I still get a server name error.

  136. January 19, 2007

    Joe P.

Or… this could be Gary’s effort to weed out the disloyal fans!

  137. January 19, 2007

    Wil H

What’s happening now ChadB? Sting, Madonna and Prince in studio with Gary and a case of Barollo with Laverneous Coles holding the spit bucket?

  138. January 19, 2007

    Brandon M

At least we got to see him live yesterday

  139. January 19, 2007

    Andre

  141. January 19, 2007

    Folks,
    Wayne530’s link (above) is correct.
    However, I get this error:

Windows Media Player cannot connect to the server. The server name might not be correct, the server might not be available, or your proxy settings might not be correct.

  144. January 19, 2007

    wayne530

yes i know. i didn’t say that it worked =) the page source for this page actually has an html error which prevents the text “Here’s the link” from actually being a link.

I think Gary started his vacation early. Have fun Gary!

  148. January 19, 2007

    Paul

grape_ape and I saw what there was of the show. It was a scream. Sorry you folks missed it.

  149. January 19, 2007

    UnliveAndUnwired

Ah, I got it working! To all you complainers out there, the trick is to call up the page, then hit the Alt-F4 key!

  150. January 19, 2007

    wayne530

there is a chat interface at the /live/live link for a bit. “grape-ape” was the only person there that was typing stuff. everyone else was signing in and timing out. that interface is gone now and there’s a link to the live video feed that isn’t working.

  151. January 19, 2007

    AlanV

Tough audience – but I am glad I didn’t miss anything!

By the way people are acting, you would think they were missing an episode of ‘24′ or something…

  152. January 19, 2007

    brandon m,
did you really see him live yesterday? i figured you were in on the joke, and that made gary all that much cooler/annoying because he went through the trouble of getting fellow vayniacs in on the joke to get people pumped up on the forums.

I just ordered a mixed case of riesling yesterday after the episode. Is there any way you guys can hook up a loyal vayniac with the free shipping based on today’s mishap?

    Thanks!

Oh no on the Oak Monster! I hope that would fade with time. If I wanted heavy oak, I’d have a scotch.

when my server was crashing, i was drinking snapple. actually, i spilled the snapple on the motherboard while the system was on and that caused it to crash. so my recommendation is not to drink any wine while doing server work =)

Here’s my story about wine drinking and computers. My laptop’s DVD burner stopped burning a few years ago at a terrible time. I’m a film editor and at 1:30 in the morning with a director standing over my shoulder I couldn’t burn the DVD he needed. A very grim night for me, but eventually I found another computer to burn the cut. A few weeeks later, after much trouble-shooting, I brought the laptop to the Apple store (it was still covered under warranty). Yep, DVD burner was dead, but to fix it I had to hand the computer over for shipping off to Apple. I needed the computer for business and couldn’t afford to be without it, so I bought an external burner and went home sad. I opened a NZ Sauvignon Blanc, don’t remember which one, and put it down next to the laptop. Reaching for it, I spilled the WHOLE GLASS into the open laptop. Keyboard was totally drenched. I shut it down and took it apart to dry it with towels, Dust Off and a haridryer. Then my wife and I finished off the Sauvignon Blanc and went upstairs feeling no pain. Fade out. The next morning I put the laptop back together and found that it worked perfectly. On a hunch, I tried burning a DVD. No problems.

Three years later and I’m typing on the same PowerBook right now while burning a DVD. So … NZ Sauvignon Blanc is always what I drink when I have computer trouble.

Welcome to the wonderful world of IT roll outs! You’ve joined a long and distinguished line of people who’ve initial product introductions didn’t go entirely as planned. VOIP telephony, wireless infrastructure, streaming video. Everyone has been through this sort of thing at one time or another. Don’t get down on the technology. Learn and improve. Think of the chat as part of an ongoing, incremental feature roll out of your live video feature.

Good work and have a great vacation.

Togni may be the best California Cab out there. Been drinking it since the mid 90’s when it was really a steal for $50.00. QPR outstanding. If you can wait 10-15 years to drink them it will only get better.

I got a chance to check in a little while after the show finally went off. I could basically get a pretty accurate timeline from reading the comments. Just watched the “traditional” version now. Yeah, Lance Mehl was great but Joe Klecko had a better name for a Jets player.

Enjoy the vacation, GV. Florida is an OK place for one.

I’m kidding… enjoy your vacation, but seriously… no episodes???

  407. January 19, 2007

Hey Gary – missed the live part (some of us have to work!), but great idea. Hope it gets up for next time. Enjoy your break and thanks for the free shipping. I say “thanks” but JESUS CHRIST – I have to stop buying wine: it is going to sent me into debtor’s prison!!

GV-Even with all the technical difficulties, still a great effort and yes…an instant classic. I saw the taped version, but at least the Togni was worth it!

Thanks for the free shipping!! Now I just need to add a few more bottles…Maybe even a Togni or two. I’m gonna have get more storage!

I had that Ercavio tempranillo tonight..mmm mmm good. That Tait Ballbuster is truly good juice, too.

So what was Erik’s big announcement, habitat for humanity? What about the countdown? Any hint of what it’s all about?

I agree w/ KAHUNA…I just don’t get the labels thing.

Can you recommend something as good as the Togni for under $50??? Scion? Amizetta?

  412. January 20, 2007

    Bill Ross

Sorry the episode didn’t go off as smoothly as planned, but I’m sure it’ll be a good learning experience. I was logged on and spent maybe 45 minutes waiting, and apparently gave up about 20 minutes too early. I’m home now from my Friday night poker game and watching the replay. Get ‘em next time and have a fabulous vacation. The free shipping is either a blessing or a curse, as I was doing pretty good on my effort to drink more wine than I bought until I reduced my surplus by about ten cases. This will probably set me back somewhat.

    Gary,
Nice try. I caught the end of the show after being shut out initially. I was somewhat skepitcal that your server could actually deliver live streaming video, but was impressed that it actually happened after all; congrats to your crew for scrambling to put it all together. Better luck next time. Thanks for the free shipping, and have a great vacataion!

Hats off to the effort, and better luck next try. As comment 418, have we broken some kind of record? Looks like I missed a real party with people waiting for the EP while the server crashed. Ah well, the ‘04 JL Chave Cotes du Rhone was drinking very nicely after 4 hours decant. HAVE A WONDERFUL VACATION GARY. Much deserved. Cheers, CK

Safe travels and thanks. Since I opened my bottle of Dunn (amazing wine) and started drinking too early didn’t get this live but even the taped show was great. For a borken server I would recommend a bottle or 2 of MD 20/20 maybe a Friday vintage. Didn’t know you were a Mac person, now I like you even better. Hope it wasn’t a Mac server that crashed. Maybe consult with Steve Jobs before the next live taping. With your popularity you are probably close to his level by now :(

I could not be here b/c I had to go to work exactly at 4 pm. But I love this episode. What a show! what a bargain! what a friendship! Man, am I slow. No. 427.

BTW please don’t leave the impression that Bordeaux’s big names are in imited supply. Mouton 320,000 bottles/year, Lynch Bages – 480,000 btls/year, same for Lafite, Latour 350,000. Figures from Stephen Brrok’s latest book.
These wines will always be available. Someone just auctioned off 50 (fifty) cases of 1982 Mouton. Prices will go up, but as they are high on release, they won’t go up that much for a while.

Love the Togni, better than most Bordeaux, and now it cost less.

Good news – WLTV doesn’t need a live session to succeed. We are getting very timely stuff on a daily release 5 days a week. Thanks.

Ack looks like I missed all nicer QPR wines on the free shipping. Went ahead and picked out a case to compare tasting notes for fun. Thank you. Enjoy your vacation.

Hey Gary I am upset that I had to miss the live episode. I was in monterey CA drinking some wine and relaxing. I drank some Ventana from Monterey. It was a 2003 CAB and it was pretty good. I poured a glass and looked at my fiance and said this one is for Gary since I cant see him live LOL :) I will be there for the next live episode though. I hope you have a good time on vacation. I will not know what to do without the episodes for that long lol. Well catch you later.

Gary, so bad I couldn’t join in for the live ep. Pitty, all that boring distraction from the real thing … :D .
Anyway, I have to tell you something: you know, you started with that remark on the Bordeaux 2005’s. Well, I wouldn’t say I don’t agree with you, but I’ve always tried not to forget to bring some home made criticism in the game here. I know all that jazz about the supply demand, market values, new commercial territory etc., it’s all true. Really, no question about that! Yet, what most people tend to forget (and often willingly tend to forget) is that our market has some kind of high level organisation in the stock market system, compared to the low level ‘everyday’ idea of the market. Both systems are interlinked by their fundamental way in dealing with the commercial AND the symbolical value of a given product. In the one system there’s more emphasis on the commercial, in the other more on the symbolical value. At least, that’s what it is actually designed for. And here is the problem with i.e. the Bordeaux market: symbolical value and commercial value are mixed, there’s no difference between both of them anymore (that’s right, I’m talking about difference, not about the essence of both values, because they don’t exist without differing from each other), they are egalized and equalized, which prevents them in an inevitable way to balance each other (follow me?). This balance in the commercial system (for the stock market, that’s something else, not being that important in the wine business, that is: the production part of the wine business, in this particular case), is embodied by the QPR, also a factor that’s determined by differences, available in the ranges of quality and commercial value. Yet, when commercial value equals symbolical value … the commercial value and the quality of this or that wine are discursively equalized (discursively! That is NOT virtually) which, to my opinion, is really something most people (in wine business or just as wine lovers) easily like to forget, when it comes to price changes in the wine market. And yes, to put it in a very simplistic way: when quality equals commercial value equals symbolical value, there is no ‘difference’ anymore, … the sole prerequisite for QPR. Now, of course it’s not that bad, we are not as far as that, but it’s an element that’s very active in for instance the wine consumers mind. Think about Southern France: wines are seen as of low quality, why? Partly because the prices are low, causing the producers to become part of a downward spiral … Of course, WE now that there are terrific wines produced in that area … but how small a bunch of players are we on the market? How small is the group of wine lovers that really seek out what’s in the bottle and not on the price tag? Think about that! It’s a very small group, literally of no IMPORTance.
There is of course the fact that there is a limited production, that there are more consumers playing on the market, … but this discursive jinx is something that’s never taken into account (because it’s to difficult to put into numbers, I am aware of that, BUT, is THAT a reason???! Think about it, and think i.e. about what happened 80 years ago! Read about the forebodes …). Why not? Obviously because it questions the whole system and is a fairly complex thing (hey, no, I’m not a complot theory believer, I’m just serious about the way the market, the market discourse works). That’s what’s going on with Bordeaux recently, has always been going on with Burgundy and Champagne, and that’s what causes the prices not to drop according to the relative outcome of the vintage in se (compare 2001 to 2000, i.e.).
This is one of the reasons why I am positively appalled by the price raisings in Bordeaux: they have nothing to do anymore with scarceness, inherent quality, … it’s all about this cancereous outgrowth of marketing discourse (don’t worry I’m a marketing guy to, so it’s not the marketing business I’m aiming at), having inevitable consequences for marketing in se, but also for the wine business. So, I really don’t believe there is a (market-)CORRECTION going on here, whatever you mean with that. What will be the eventual outcome of this … I don’t know. The only thing I know is that I have been much more restrained in buying my cases 2005’s (Lagrange, Léoville Barton, Haut-Brion and some others). Not because they are not ok, or not because they are all overpriced, or all that crap … No, just because there is something about this valuation egalisation I really want to stand up against: I just try to prevent my own palate from being influenced by this very aggressive wine marketing discourse.
Just consider this: what about the QPR of for instance 2004/2005 Ausone and 2004/2005 Léoville Barton (just make abstraction of the cru-system, because that’s a parameter of symbolical value here, and in it’s overpowering the QPR, is the problem here)? Huh? I don’t think so, if you follow me … . Something more? What about the competition with other wines (i.e. Cali Cabs, SA Cab/merl/pv/…)? Huh? Why isn’t there anything visible of that in here? I know why, if you follow me in what I said, I am sure you’ll think the same … . So, changing the wine world is for me in the first place being aware of wine discourse and being able to distinguish the difference covered up by that particular discourse. Pensive guy? Yes I am! And when I’m not I really enjoy my coke ;-) .
Go on man! You make people question, that’s the only way to go …
QOTD: server down? An almost 100% carignan, Aux Temps d’Histoire from Domaine du Grand d’Arc. Orangette with chocolate, dark, dark, melancholy wine, bittersweet fruits, jasmine and all that. Indescribable.
    C ya.

    Gary,

I’m happy for you in that the live WLTV broadcast finally worked out after crashing.

Thanks for the gift of free shipping. I bought a few cellar defenders but I was bummed out that the Von Hovel Riesling you reviewed the other day was sold out by the time I ordered. It sounds fantastic and I’ll be looking for it.

Enjoy you vacation & thanks again.

MAcGeek, love my new Intel Powerbook. Runs my Mac software like crazy and runs Vista (last beta copy) in parallel even better than my Dell (that is now for sale!). This is going to be hard going cold turkey on wine comments for 10 days. Hope the forums heat up somewhat.

It’s like watching the Microsoft crash only less embarrasing! Still pretty darn funny, and Gary always keeps his cool – but was he throwing bottles around afterwards?
