Very topical. . .I realized today as I was digging out my car that I left bottles of St Urbans-hof and Little Penguin in there over the last couple of sub-20 degree F nights. The concensus around the office is that you must be insane to do anything without a coat during a nor’easter.

QOTD, DUH, YES, YES, YES! I’d love to buy some 2004 Chateau Le Gay and Casa Emma and not pay for shipping. Yum.

  31. February 15, 2007

Kahuna, how about a picture of me in Berns with a Vayniac T-shirt eating the steak.

  32. February 15, 2007

    ol_fezziweg

I was intrigued with the Le Gay until you compared it with Justin Timberlake.

Chat Lynch smells like salad in a jockstrap. . . . classic. I won’t be buying it, but classic.

  33. February 15, 2007

    HomerJ

It’s bad news that wines are all heading toward one direction, but it will get better. The pendulum will eventually swing toward the other end. As consumers become more expereinced, they will want more exposure to it and whoever is still around providing it, will make a killing.

  34. February 15, 2007

    waibeans

The concept is good, but :P on the free shipping or come up with an alternative for us locals. I am tempted with the Le Gay if it just wasn’t for that name!!! I like the fact that there are these old Chats reinventing themselves tho… how does it compare to Lascombe?

Great follow up to yesterday, glad you came through and gave us some control tastings! How many hits did you guys get yesterday, more than #148?

    GottaGoDrink

Gary- I agree with #33 because I think there is at least some Old World in everyone. I understand your concern, however, as it seems there are fruit bombs in every price range. I’ve had the Mollydooker Boxer, Tunnel of Love and Two Left Feet and all our over-the-top bombs and fun to drink.

    ComQOTD- Yes

  41. February 15, 2007

    Wil Neverspit

Thanks GV – I hope your “nards” have thawed.

You’ve done “vertical tastings”, but this summer, you must complete the “thermal tasting”…
try the same three wines while standing on an hot-asphalt roof in Phoenix in mid-July.

enjoy London… the fish and chips suck there, by the way.

I love the Community Question of the Day idea, just don’t let TampaCheapskate get in first again!

QOTD: Enough with the free shipping! That’s always the prize. How ’bout something for us locals instead!

Athletic Challenge: Gary — you won’t get a game off me in tennis. (Although you probably can kill me on the b-ball court).

How about a WLTV Softball team? There’s got to be a local league we can get in this summer?

  43. February 15, 2007

    Gatorfan

Enjoyable show as always. I don’t think that all wine will eventually taste the same since different people tend to exhibit different preferences. For example, when you rate a wine you address people that like “old world” or “new world” characteristics. As long as people exhibit a distribution of preferences, wines should remain heterogeneous.

    CQOTD: free shipping would rule.

  44. February 15, 2007

    Neil

    QOTD: Free shipping, yes!

New World vs. Old World – the golden rule applies here: silver & gold.

    5+5-5-5= 0

Regarding the 91 rating for Ch Lynch Bages: how can a nose of used jockstrap with salad garner a 91 rating? Perhaps this effort is better off in a blizzard tasting like yesterday.

    Enjoy the show!

  45. February 15, 2007

  46. February 15, 2007

Yes on the free shipping. Though now I have to ship to my parents house 5 hours away…which sucks. I wish we could change the wine world to allow for shipping to Georgia.

    Still sad in the ATL.

Community QOTD: Yes on the free shipping. Locals should get no tax?

Does WineLibrary have a “Fruit bomb” label. If I search WineLibrary, will it match. I really like fruit bombs at this point in my wine drinking life and would like to find them easily (guess I’m lazy, too.)

    aktormedic

I am saddened by this episode. Having not tasted the WOTY…ever…since I don’t spend 200 dollars to point chase wines, I was hoping that this would be a typical Brunello, exposing the world to an interesting and traditional region, and expanding the minds of the robotic sheep-like American drinking public. I apparently am wrong. How sad that everything that scores well tastes like alcoholic fruit juice. How very sad. I see the change, even in France, every time I go. The wines are loosing their typicity, their “terroir”, their character. But the thing is, its not just the wine. Its the buildings, the restaurants, the food, the people, the popular culture. The world is becoming more and more bland and uninteresting. Why pay 1000 dollars for a plane ticket to experience something different, a different culture, when you get there to discover basically what you left 5000 miles away. Just a horrible thought, but inevitable in my opinion.

    Antonio Touriño

You know, I think everything goes in cycles… Maybe now, the wine world is moving to one fruit bomb flavor as a lot of people are finding out about wines and lets face it. New drinkers tend to like the fruity flavors. However, I think that once there is homogenous flavor the wines that offer something different will begin to stand out and the big sellers will be precisely wines that are different and the wine world will move to different flavors once again. Those are my 2 cents…

Oh common, all you locals quit whining. You get “free” shipping every day. Plus you can browse the entire WL stock by just walking down the aisle. Those two are bennies enough for y’all. YES YES YES on free shipping for the WLTV anniversary! Wooo hooo!

    QOTD: HELLS YEAH!
WS is part of a conspiricy to push California and the cal style on the rest of the world, consequently I really don’t pay attention to their ratings. Gary V. on the other hand tells it like he sees it and is not in bed with any wine industry people. (at least I don’t think so.)

  64. February 15, 2007

    TagWorld Brian

Yes I agree, free shipping is a good anniversary gift! As for the arithmetic question, I’m not sure it’s zero. It could be 5+5-5-5. That would equal 0. But the way Gary pronounced it, I thought he said 5+5-(5-5) which equals 10. So I’m covered both ways. Hey Gary, howzabout that Vayniac shirt! Show a brother some love.

  65. February 15, 2007

    Dom

QOTD: By all means. Yes, he should give free shipping for one year! I’m all for that.

Answer: Zero (what am I, #52?)

On to better things. A basketball or tennis challenge? I’ve been planning on making the trip up the turnpike to your wine shrine (hmm, I wonder if anyone has that url?) and now I have even more incentive. Getting to meet GV and then spank him like a baby in tennis AND basketball! Now how much fun would that be? Especially since I’m probably twice his age.

Wager: A bottle of Dominus at each sport. 2 out of three sets in tennis (trust me, it will only be two) and a game of one-on-one to 20 by 2s and then a game of H-O-R-S-E. Hey, I’m an old man. I need a break.

Great show Gary. I’ll get you a movie clip by Wednesday. I guess a clip of me looking like Peyton with a monkey on his back that he throws at the camera is out of the question?

    Cheers!

  66. February 15, 2007

However, since I can’t use free shipping, the equivalent value in wine will be acceptable, Gary.

Hey, aktormedic. You need to join us for a local tasting. I know you’re nearby, so try to get here. You never know what will show up on the table – especially when TampaSteve drops in.

  77. February 15, 2007

    TampaSteve

Antonio…I am with your comment “everything goes in cycles”. That comment made me think of a statement I just recently read about desert wines from France…..”Although some of the wines are now among the most sought after and expensive in the world, this wasn’t always the case. Sweet wines went out of vogue in the 1960s and ’70s, leaving producers without the funds to properly maintain their vineyards. A fall in wine quality resulted. It wasn’t until the outstanding vintage of 1983 garnered critical praise and consumer attention that sales increased dramatically. Top producers haven’t looked back since and are again investing in their vineyards and making luscious sweet wines vintage after vintage.”

    GV – great episode…

Come ON guys, we all know we’re going to buy more wine, free shipping or not.

Granted, twenty bucks less spent on shipping means twenty bucks more spent on wine – and I’m all for that.

It’s not shocking to me that you’re athletic, but you appear to be a bit vertically challenged. Unless you can channel the talent of Steve Nash, I’m afraid your palate might get damaged with all the leather you be tastin’….you’ll be picking up brett in every sip, homestyle…bring it…peace out.

interesting variety of wines today gary…….so glad to hear your take on the mollydooker….i totally agree that such a wine should have a warning on it about it being a beverage other than wine…in fact, when i tasted it, my first thought was that they should have called it a port. i hate that much sugar and alc…..esp. when there’s nothing else going on but BIG. the le gay sounds more like my kind of wine. also interesting to point out the italian brunello attempt at mollydookerizing……and in addition, to show at least one reason why mollydookerizing is happening: lynch-bages sour grapes effort. nice complex show. i am all for wine makers to use the mininum amount of technology to make a tasty wine with varietal typicity. wines with character over wines that intentionally act like wines made from other grapes.

Alright..first off GV…gotta apologize…I have Procrastinated and do not have a shirt yet to take a pic…Your Jedi has let you down.

Secondly: Kahuna and Locals….Free shipping yes….and not to start a Blog war…but dougdell said it…you get to see the WL everyday you want….you get to see and smell the real GVs jock strap or whatever it is you locals do

Good show gary….about the athletics…I wrestled in school, but once you get older…something just doesn’t sound right about challenging another man to wrestle around on a mat in a tight suit:) How about some good old fashion rugby!

Got some bordeaux’s in the shopping cart, but wondered about the weather and shipping!

Being the true entrepenuer that you are I figured you would hand out free T’s for the 1 year…it works as free advertisement for you and keeps the vayniacs happy..but free shipping is a bonus!

Thanks for keeping it real GV!

Gary, follow the money trail. The wine world will follow the money trail the same way everything else does. Old world wines will gravitate to what the general population is drinking. Case in point the mass of fruit bombs from nowhere else but the country with the largest surplus of juice.. Australia. Not all bad, but a little disheartening to traditional wine lovers like us. Great for the uneducated public. That is why a lot of you, with a little bit of us need to keep changing the wine world. PLEASE keep up the GREAT work!!!

QOTD: Yes, particularly if that includes the EU!!

    T-Shirt question. 0

Though not the first, maybe the first answer from a European location? Does that count?

Way to go on the Pomerol! I’m dying to get my hands on some…

CQOD: I would NEVER say no to free shipping for any reason!
I’m a little disappointed to hear about the WOTY. I probably would never have tried it anyway, just because of the cost. But I do hope the wine world isn’t headed south. (No offense TampaSteve ;) )
I like the idea of a wine that doesn’t try to mask its own identity.
I’m proud of my roots; so should a wine be.

    Chris From NY

I would put Gary V. on a chain and place that chain around my neck and make fun of him because i would own him on the court. ha ha…seriously i would school ya. We have a game mon-wed-fri 12:30-2pm in westchester county ny if you dare. Two ways i know you have no game, the justin timberlake reference and that weak ass shot you took at the end of the video. Good episode though. Stick with what you know….wine.

    The Raging Platypus

The Platypus is always down for a game or five of basketball. I’m 5′6 of pure undilated fury on the hardtop, so don’t ya’all be dissin’ us undersized point guards! I am the poorest of the poor man’s version of Marc Jackson. Really poor. Oh yeah. I can hear the league quacking in their boots already.

Nice job on the jock strap analogy – I was eating a salad while I was watching this, and I had to look down, a deep sigh escaping my lips as I pushed my plate away in disgust. =P Keep up the great work!

    QOTD: HELLS YEAH

Gary, terrific and controversial ending. I too am afraid of the “Parker-ization” of the world’s wines. I want Bordeaux to taste like Bordeaux and Brunello to taste like Brunello. If I ever taste a Barolo tasting like a cab – I’ll quit drinking wine and go back to beer. Outside of Civil War in Iraq nothing scares me more than every wine in world becoming “Fake 92-94 Parker Shiraz”

Global warming scares me too….maybe not as much as “Fake 92-94 Parker” Shiraz.

    Like 'em Rounded and Aged

No knock on your athletic prowess, but anyone that was inpressed with your ability to intercept a slow moving wine glass has said more about their athletic ability than yours.

Thanks for the heads up on the Le Gay. Will give it a try.

Can’t you just get rid of all the losers who just pos: “hey I’m number 2″, “wow Top 10″ etc….
Out of 111 comments, we must have 10 comments on wine, 20 on people happy because they made it to the top 20 (what a miserable life you guys must have) and the rest is like reading a teenager magazine (yes right you can dunk, beat federer at tennis bla bla bla bla).
Can we have a filter and at least just keep REAL comments??

  114. February 16, 2007

    Slick Nick

Gary, Would love to join you for BB but knees are shot. How about a WL golf outing instead/in addition to at Baltusrol, that is if you have the connections. Golf in the morning and wine tasting in the afternoon… now that beats a day at the office!!!

QOTD: NO free shipping!!… would rather have repeat of Black Friday coupons!!

  115. February 16, 2007

    michael J Vino

How about free shipping on wine orders over $100. You rock HomerJ. Try some Long Island wines, they are getting better. But stick with Merlot and cab franc as opposed to my fav, pinot noir.

    “She’s into pinot…”
    “Perfect”

    GARY,
DrEdwardo is correct in comment #62…you never rated the Casanove on this episode.

You rated a 93+ in the SnowBowl EP….whaddya got?

    Need it for the SS.

Perhaps you can have an alternative contest for the CA trip…whomever ever creates, submits and maintains the best WLTV SS. :-D

Glad you said that about the Neri. The Tenuta Nuova wines did never weigh up to my expectations. They even come close to Banfi for what they are. Comp. with Syrah nails it. I am not to fond of these new tendencies in Tuscany. I think a lot of growers throw the true capacity of their terroir, but also the characteristics of the varietals (like I said about Chianti) overboard. Shame.
    C ya.

    Grasshopper

    Sensei,

You kind went off track on the Casanova di Neri and did not give it your rating? I am sure your not going to agree with WS if you do not think it tastes like a true Brunello, but still curious what score you would give it? My Sweetheart bought me three bottles of the 2001 Casanova for Valentines Day. (god I love that women!)I am pretty excited about owning them and putting them into my collection. You sounded like it was a very good wine with great flavors and silky?? Can you also give me your opinion on how long I should wait before popping one of these?

Sign me up for hoops!!!!!! I can play point guard or shooting guard and can be a shut down defender on whoever is the hot hand on the Total Wine team. Is it just a wine store leagu or will we play the 7-11 guys as well? I will be there with bells on. Let me know about tryouts.

Yo, I’m in Japan so how about a WLTV Ninja league? After a “match” who’s ever left living will get a case of wine or “something”. Shoot, that’s a “fantastic” idea. I feel ya on the all wines moving to the same taste tip. But homie, oh don’t you dismay cuz there are tons of heads like all us Vay to the Niacs that are down for trying different tastes. We’re the new generation (well at least the coolest part of the new generation) of wine drinker that will change the market. Right now everyone has a woody for oakyfruityvanillyfruityfruitfruity in a bottle so all the winemakers hop on the band wagon. So, you get a bunch of homogeneous wines that please the masses for a while but in the meantime the “cooler generation” starts drinking wine from India, China, Texas, my mom’s bathtub and all these interesting places and we can put those places on the map. Two hopes I have for the wine world: more organic/biodynamic/ecofriendly wines and fewer people insisting to drink wine with food that really is made for beer. Wine and french fries…nope! Wine and fried chicken, c’mon.

i’ll kick joey’s ass at bowling…hehe. I’m with you gary, I hate that wines from all regions are starting to taste the same. I’m a huge lover of wines such as brunello and it pisses me off when i drop $75 on one and it tastes like a freaking shiraz fruit bomb. When a wine is made well it can retain its terroir and still have profound jammy fruit. Keep up the great work.

Just got a 96 lynch bages, gonna taste it along with the 04! This is gonna be interesting! It’s nice when Gary’s reviewed a wine I’m about to taste!

    John J.

I agree Gary, and I hope that wines stay true to their roots, and not all start tasting the same.

a wine that tastes really unique you havent had on yet would be a vin jaune
