Yeah, slow to load today. Full Metal Jacket was SO good in the start, and it did get a bit mundane after that, but not bad. Not like an M Knight Shalamama movie, where it starts out all spooky and mysterious and then ! SURPRISE! Samuel L Jackson is a supervillain! Bleh.

    Gary,
Cool episode. Will have to check out the Larmande. Just goes to show you you don’t always have to pay top dollar for great vino. My son concurs that Jumpman is Mario’s name. But he and I pose a challenge question, which should be worth a free WL tote.

What was Mario (Jumpman) named after????

QOTD: Favorite Snack 1. Cheese 2. Pistachio nuts 3. Gardetto’s Original Snack mix. If you haven’t had # 3, with the pumpernickle crisps soaked with salt and worcestshire sauce, you are missing heaven in a snack food.

I’ll answer your question too. =)

Mario (Jumpman) was named after Mario Segale, landlord of a warehouse owned by Nintendo America.

Thanks for the tips G-Man on the lesser known Saint Emilions, always good info to have. Have you ever tried Havens Bourriquot? I had the 2000 recently, and it is full on Saint Emilion style.

Thanks for another Bordeaux ep and thanks for teaching me more about this region. As a wine newbie it is one of the most intimidating because of all the big french words. You also don’t know what is in the bottle unless you know what is grown in St Emilion, St Georges etc.

    G-Man-
first off, nice ep. i really like the st. emilion wines and find that at comparable prices they are ready sooner than the left bank bordeauxs. so i like buying them at wine shops or off lists more than the left bank guys. although their classification is not as reliable as the 1855 one in my opinion.

QOD1: first off tell eric great call on the spot under pressure for full metal jacket. the first half of that movie is the best 45 minutes of any movie i have ever seen. after that, it kind of falls apart. I would add Saving Private Ryan to that list.

QOD2: dried fruit (blackberries, cherries, cranberries, apricots, blueberries, and strawberries) and nuts (almonds, m and ms, walnuts, pistachio). I like making my own blends instead of buying the ones the markets have. that way i don’t need to remove any of the stuff i don’t like.

QOTD: Been eating Jelly Belly jelly beans lately as a cheap way to try to work on my wine palate. It’s a great way to try to pick out odd flavors and train yourself to analyze what your mouth is telling you, especially when you just grab 3 random beans and pop ‘em in your mouth.

Best snack.. Extra sharp cheddar,, the aged crumbly kind, with Stoned Wheat Thins.
how was London? Also lets put things in perspective. At $37 its certainly not expensive for good bordeaux,, but any wine over $30 dollars a bottle should be somethin at least slightly special..
Hey, were not all millionaires, so for us regular joes, this is a pricey bottle.. and should be considered a special occasion wine.

OH SNAPS you done brought it out didn’t you! Favorite snack? Oh shoot. Well let me break it down internationally for all you heads back home. Jyaga riko, that’s right. It’s a little potato stick, chippy, mixed salad flavored, crunchy, addicting snacks over here in Japan. Also, Triscuits (Original, what’s up with low sodium and thin and wedgey crap…no sir, only the big ol’ fat, cut your mouth up with the hard edges, dehydrate your whole body with one cracker style). Triscuits and Sauternes. How about that for a pairing? You know you all love it!
OK so who wants some jyaga riko, triscuits and sauternes?

  82. February 28, 2007

    Great episode Gary.

QODT: raw ramen noodles, especially the oriental flavor.

  83. February 28, 2007

    Jessi

Thanks for the ep, Gary! As a Bordeaux newbie, anything you can tell us to demystify this region is much appreciated! Will definitely seek out the Chateau Larmande!

QOTD: Cheese & fruit (good, sharp cheddar w/ apples, blue cheese w/ pears, etc) – or, if I’m spending an evening watching junky TV & really want to go all out, tortilla chips w/ Tostito’s salsa con queso (gotta love that fake orange cheese color – YUM!)

Question for you (or for any other commenters): I have a 2000 St Emilion Grand Cru (Prier des Jacobins) that I got as a gift. When should I open it? If I open it now, how long to decant?

    Thanks!

Or queso: a can of Rotel tomatoes melted with a pound of Velveeta, served with tortilla chips. I don’t know how widely available Rotel is, but it is a staple food here in south Texas.

CHOCHOLATE CHIP COOKIES AND LBV PORT ROCK!!!!

  94. February 28, 2007

    Ken

I love St. Emilion wines. Monbousquet is one of my favorites because it offers great value year-after-year. Your comments about the sand at Larmande reminded me of Sam Kinison’s bit on sand.

QOD: Favorite snack is probably Ritz crackers with Jif Crunchy peanut butter and a big glass of milk. I’ll go thorough a whole sleeve of crackers and several glasses of milk in the same sitting. Another favorite, and this sounds a bit odd, is Triscuit crackers with peanut butter on them and sharp cheddar cheese melted on top of the peanut butter. Try it sometime and I bet you’ll like it!! Oreo cookies or my wife’s homemade chocolate chip cookies dunked in milk is another great one.

Gary, dropped you a vote on Valleywag. But don’t get the wrong idea about me. :) Our former PR person was in a contest on that site. Great stuff there.

Wow, Veoh muffed your name spelling twice – once on the video, once on the site. Oh well. Still a very cool video. I’d love to see you do an episode or two inside the main part of your store. Maybe on the main floor, and let a customer walk up and try one of the wines with you, to compare notes. Or maybe shoot upstairs in one of those cool winery-looking rooms. Might be a fun change-up.

By the way, Jumpman. Does comment 101 win? Or just comment 1?

  102. February 28, 2007

    Lawrence Leichtman

The very first bottle of wine I dropped in front of the wine store in Austin, TX in 1968 was a 1966 St. Emilion. When the shopkeeper saw that he gave me another bottle of the same thing so that started a long warm fuzzy with St. Emilion. Still my preference over most other wines from the Bordeaux region and usually a better price break. Thanks for the heads up on the Lamande. Favorite snack is anything with cheese and I found my youngest son’s old Nintendo game and it was labeled Jumpman. Oh well way too late.

Wow, Gary, that’s a damn good picture of you on the VLOGHOT site!

You know, I remember seeing at least one episode (back in the 40-60 range) in which your name was printed on the screen w/ a big fat “C” before the “K”… tsk, tsk.

QOD: I guess I have a pretty severe oral fixation because I’m CONSTANTLY snacking. I eat chips, I suck on hard candy, I smoke a pipe, and sometimes when I’ve got nothing else that does the trick I sip on Worchestershire sauce or hot sauce or even wasabi. So, picking a single favorite snack is difficult for me, but there are a few that I return to again and again:

Candy: sassafras hard candy, Jujubes (not too sweet to eat in quantity), chocolate-covered pretzels
    Snackfood: pretzel sticks, pistachios
Healthy: fresh spinach leaves dipped in homemade dressing, celery w/ peanut butter

over you have no idea what the hell happened.
Drink heavily before pressing play if you want to enjoy that one!

Nice job Kahuna! Jumpman, yes, of course.

Sorry I got to this late. My favorite snack is whole unroasted cashews. What I eat are pretzels, particularly with sesame seeds. Or most any cheese. Or Snickers.

QOTD: This is disgusting, but I’ve always loved Snyders Cheese Curls or the softer Cheetos.

Good, dunk the Parkerized bas****s ;-) ! Last St.Emil I had was again a Clos Fourtet, mmm, that one was nice. Another movie that started great but really came to nothing in the end: Kingdom of heaven. Beginning just tremendous, the end … well, it sucks.
Anyway, QOTD: Snickers, definitely, but I want to try the new tastes. Didn’t hae one yet.

Are you freaking kidding me? Full Metal Jacket, while the ending was not as explosive as the start, did not fall off at all, the summation of the story was profound, just not as exciting as the start.
