sniff, no QOTD…. and Nick, forget the jets, sport is merely a diversion from the accumulation of wine knowledge and a big time waster. And just look at how opposing team supporters treat each other ! Very nice

Thanks for letting us see behind the camera Gary. In my job, I work with an agency that support people with disabiliities and I can tell you that if Nick is anything like the people that we support, you have done something very special for him by sharing the email and talking with him. You are a good soul.

Gary…you have a great heart! That was a touching commentary about who and where you are in your life. It shows that running a huge operation like Wine Library has not changed the underlying character. Hats off to your parents for raising a humble, grounded guy!
It’s episodes like this that truly make us all feel like we’re party of a family.
Cheers!

Sensei,
Your tribute to Nick was very touching. Had you planned on us seeing the photo that was attached to the email? I would have loved to have seen it.
You are an amazing guy and we are all lucky to have you to help teach us about wine and the important things in life, which are freinds, family, health and doing something nice for other human beings.
Thanks for ALL that you do….

Gary,
You are an incredible person with your heart in the right place. My 9 year old daughter is also a huge fan. She watches your episodes as well and sleeps in her Vayniac T-shirt. I am proud she is a fan of such a good hearted person, as opposed to some Hollywood tabloid celeb.
Thanks for being you!!

Good show! Greene Grape in Fort Greene is a really nice shop…small, but well-edited. I was there last year for an afternoon tasting with producers from South Africa. For a couple of them, it was their first visit to the States. The store also has an “outpost” (as far as Brooklynites are concerned) in the Wall St. area.

Gary,
Thanks for sharing the email about Nick. I’m sure you have touched Nick’s family as much as you have him. Parents like Nick’s are my hero.

Cheers GV! You just made Nick’s day\week\month. He must feel great as I’m sure you are too. At the end of the day wine means squat. Its the people we surround ourselves with.

P.S. This gravatar thing is annoying. I “updated” mine and now I have nothing!
It’s an amazing feeling knowing that you can have such positive impact on someone when others will take it for granted. It’s definitely special when those people share it with you. Like you said, it can totally make you forget about all the other stuff. Thank you for doing what you do.
Nice to have you here Nick.

Awesome tribute Gary….and way to go NICK!!!
I added a little tribute to Nick at the very top of the SS (in the “Abbreviation Key” section).

Another great episode. I can say without any doubt you will never be type cast. You give us headpicking and jockstrap salad the do a complete 180 and hit us with this. WOW. On top of the stellar performance I received my T-shirt today.
I tend to bet Nick knows more about enjoying life than most of us. Biggups G-Man, way to rip a tear jerker.

Shout out to Nick. I liked the glasses blowing off the table, too! Sooo funny. But we’re running out of winter here in NJ for Gary to encore the episode.

Well, Gary clearly has something special here. I’m just sorry that there’s a whole year that I’ve missed. Gary, no matter what you chose to do with this very cool thing you’ve built, I suspect your fans will stick around, cheering you on. Class-A episode. It pulled me out of lurker status. Now I’m a real invisible fan, drinking my invisible wine.

Yeah, big lump in my throat too, Gary. Last Friday my wife and I had three beautiful kids in our store, all under 17 years old, from Ranken Jordan Pediatric Specialty Hospital to show them and have them experience what a florist is all about.
I took more away from them, than they could ever in a lifetime take from me. It humbled me to my core. They were not only a joy to be with, but their courage and strength to live the best they can each day affected my wife and I, hopefully forever. Not to mention their affect on how I deal with my petty day-to-day issues compared to those they have to struggle with. Their presence in my store blessed me, in ways they will never know.
Mike
PS: Nick my Man! You’re one of us! I knuckle you, buddy. Go Jets!

It’s occurred to me before, but this episode confirms it: Gary is actually around 70 years old. Not sure what the deal is with all the black hair (Grecian formula?) and why he pretends to still have ups when it comes to hoops, but he’s too sensitive for a 30-something Jersey guy. His outlook on life reminds me of my grandfather (who’s a good guy too).
Given that today’s email will apparently help keep GV’s WLTV episodes going strong, we all owe Nick, don’t we?!
Nice ep, you goofy septegenarian.

Gary, you are the opposite of the Tin Man in the Wizard of Oz, in place of cold tin, you have a big warm heart of gold, and you ARE right, you SHOULD thank your folks for giving you lots of love tempered with discipline (best thing of all is when a kid has someone raising them who truly loves them and takes an interest in their interests). Karen–great job, you sound like just the kind of mom, the IDEAL MOM, that I’ve just described…could you please post here and let us know what kind of reaction Nick had when he found out that he was featured?

Nick was beyond thrilled to see his special episode yesterday. The sheer delight on his face said it all. Nick will put episode #191 on his iPOD and keep it forever. Funny, Nick started watching WLTV (over my shoulder) because he said that he liked the sound of Gary’s voice…and it took off from there. Personally, I am extremely touched that Gary would extend his time and effort for a little boy he has never even met. All that Gary has done, has meant a great deal to Nick and he felt very special. Nick thinks you are the greatest Gary, and more importantly, now he knows that you are his friend. For all that, I can’t thank you enough.
PS…Nick asked to read the comments and was absolutely giddy with all of your well wishes, thank you so much!! -Caren

LI Wine Rocks…My Favorate was the Pindar 1998 Mythology I still have 1 left in the fridge. Another one of my goto Reds from Pindar is the Pythagoras blend, however the last bottle I had wasn’t up to Par, but a wine that clearly delivers almost all the time. When I lived on LI I used to love going to the harvest events on the noth fork and love tasting all the wine good and bad. Its a great time and should be experience by ALL of you who are in Driving Distance of the vineyards.
Other LI wine to look for and ones I enjoyed are LENZ, Bedell, Osprey’s Dominion, Wolffer and of course Duck Walk are all making good juice. I sure do miss it. I have family binging LI Wine to us from NY to FL when they visit.
Enjoy

What heart! What humanity! Thanks for being a great guy. Thanks for making wine about people and not pretensions. Thanks for loving your fans, for building community, for expanding the wine universe by making it so much smaller. Good show. Glad to have found you. Now, we’ve got to get you on wine of our times. this must be rectified.

Gary, it seems that any comment one could offer regarding that episode would be trite in comparison to that email you read. Even though you often state up front in episodes, “what we do on WLTV is taste wine,” it’s also true that you and WLTV do so much more than that. Hopefully, you can keep it going for some time yet.

GV,
This was a touching episode. Thanks for putting things in perspective. Your wine knowledge is tremendous but your compassion for life and the human spirit reigns supreme.
Your mom did a good job with you, your other siblings may be a horror show, but you are a good egg. Thanks for speaking directly to Nick; I’m sure it was his moment in the sun.
I’m off to do a good deed today.

Gary I was expecting an email from Robert Parker or someone but this is so much better. I’ve just qualified as a doctor and I’ve done lots of charity work with autistic children in the past and its impossible to overestimate how important something like your show could be to someone who finds life a hellava lot harder than you or I. Keep up the work Gary – you’re a legend.
Peter.
P.S. have you managed to source any Russian Caravan tea yet? If not i’ll send you some from Fortnums and Masons.

Great stuff Gary. My mom loved the wine for her birthday. Shocking that South Carolina has smarter wine laws than the morons in charge in Georgia.
Very cool Gary. I was telling one of my Clients about winelibrary because although he lives in Atlanta also, he was ordering wine from some other NY wine shop online. I told him to stop what he was working on and go to winelibrary.com and check out what you’ve got goin on. Really, beyond being able to learn from the show, and have a little fun in the process, it’s the idea of community that makes Winelibrary TV so great.
Other than lurkers and haters of course.
Nick, you’re the man. Careen, thanks for sharing an awesome story.
Awesome Gary. Just you sharing this with everybody out here. So again, what you already know: great job.
And eh, Nick should be proud of himself. You owe him a true WLTV-shirt!
Gary, I was in Long Island a week ago (today is April 30) and I stopped at Macari. I do agree that the Chardonnay is ok, a bit generic I would say. BUT, the Merlot Reserve is excellent. I dont’love mMerlots, but this one made me think twice! The people at the vineyard are very nice and are ready to answer any question you may have. It’s an excellent place to spent an afternoon at, just sipping some wine. I really like their approach at keeping wine making as natural as possible…Also, I am excited about going back and tasting the Malbec they just came out with. I hope Long Island can come up with some good Malbecs.
PS this was a very special episode indeed. Really liked it, especially at the end.
