I hope everyone enjoys today’s episode. A lot of hard work went into making this episode work better for everyone here. New play buttons in the show notes allow you to “scrub” around the video to different key points. We hope you enjoy them. Thanks Vayniacs!

Oh come on, Gary– “Ugly” is in the eye of the beholder…and the eyes of the Vayniacs can’t even find a way to put the words “ugly” and “Gary Vaynerchuk” into the same sentence! (even though I just did…)

Still loving new format. Great additions thanks very easy to navigate. top 20 good for me.QOTD Gary will you try an Altos Las Hormigas Malbec 2006 Library code 27807. I’ve had some prior vintages of this wine and enjoyed. exspecially at it’s price point I’m a little worried at the 2006 vintage really young but that seems to be the vintage you have in stock.

Also, though I couldn’t find any in the Library, there are some great young vintners on the Saar south of Trier (still stuck under the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer designation) doing some amazing things with Chardonnay these days. Very light, crisp, not at all oaky Chardonnays that have more in common with a Pinot Gris than most of the Chardonnay I’ve tasted coming out of California. I hope you give them a chance soon. One name that comes to mind where I did some tasting: Agritiushof in the town of Oberemmel.

Great show, I love “off-the-wall” wines and try them often. I think the Sawtooth has a great label. I’d spend $8 just for that. BTW, I hope you are tasting at Cour d’Alene in Idaho. If not, make it a point to go there. They have a golf hole that is an island in the middle of a gorgeous lake. Gorgeous, gorgeous part of the country.

    Gary,
Thanks for branching out and tasting some wines from new regions. In all honesty, I feel that NY and Canada for that matter do have an identity…Riesling. Cave Spring actually makes a very nice semi-dry riesling, not to mention ice wine, which could very well be NY’s and Canada’s claim to fame. The Niagara Peninsula is trying to step up quality with new wineries such as Warm Lake, who have invested heavily in producing a top notch pinot noir. While it has yet to perform in the QPR area, I beleive with time they may be one worth watching. Jackson Triggs is another nice Niagara Peninsula winery. The best part of it all is that with wine, like you always say, to try something new. I beleive the key is for these wineries to find the right balance to producing wines that will sell (for instance, making your standard quaffing Chardonnay that inevitably sells and allows the winery to profit) and making truly unique wines that when you taste them you can undeniably say, now thats a Niagara Peninsula Wine!…and mean it in a good way. Keep up the work, you truly are an invaluable resource to us all!
    Cheers,
    Mike

Awwwwww GV man. Why Cave Springs? You finally choose a Niagara wine …….. and you choose them. We have sooooo many nice wineries. Try Rieslings from Reif Wineries (started and owned by a German whoose family owns winery in Germany), Thirty Bench (actually my fav, and a nice selection of reds and whites —- Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gwertz, Cab Sauv, Cab Franc, and a really nice Pinot Noir), also wineries like Marynissen, Strewn, Peller Esates, Henry of Pelham. Harder to find, but worth the look.

Also, pleeeaaaaassssseeee find me a Chard I can love. Its been soooooooo long.

Probably infanticide to open them but it would be nice to see how these wines from a hot dry vintage are coming along. I’m curious to know why you keep pronouncing it “Kav Springs” when it is “Cave Springs”? Rhymes with Dave, save, and brave. ;-)

I’m not a huge fan of chardonnays, but there are some really good chardonnays from Ontario/Niagara. You should check out Chateau Des Charmes, Malivoire, or the Hillebrand Showcase series. Those should impress and demonstrate that California isn’t the only place in North America that can produce a solid chardonnay.

  181. September 24, 2007

    Helios Gallery

Happy to see Sakonnet Vineyards given a try. Little Compton is one of the best areas to live in RI. It’s cooler in the summer because of the ocean breeze, and warmer on the wintertime because of that same ocean breeze. Lots of small farms in the area.It is the original home of the Rhode Island Red Chicken. Glad to hear the RI Chard did well. Some other varietals have received good reviews before. Unfortunately the only one I’ve tried was their Gewürztraminer. I don’t remember what year it was, but it was was of the few, really bad wines I’ve ever had. It was very thin, and exhibited none of the characteristics of a good Gewürztraminer.

I love the fact that you tried the Sakonnet Vineyards wine! My parents live right down the street from there…the area is lovely and the wine is awesome!

Just now saw this … “Kav” made me laugh!

2004 was a searingly hot summer in the East, and Niagara had a really difficult time. NOT good for most whites, and yields for reds were down but quality was high for many vintners.

However, I am not a big fan of Cave Springs chardonnays. There have been some really good ones, but Cave Springs seems to be less consistent to me than some other Niagara wineries.

Adding to Daniel O’s suggestion, I’d add Peller Estates (sister winery to Hillebrand), Angel’s Gate (2000 old vines chard was THE BEST I’ve ever had) and the Collectors’ Choice offerings from Hillebrand. The Showcase line, while spectacular, are pricey. Worth it, but for everyday, the CC series is normally great value. At $9.99, the ‘97 CC chardonnay was spectacular, edged out only by the 2000 Angel’s Gate.

  184. June 4, 2009

    Phredd

Question related to this episode (as I continue my trek through WLTV history): What are the characteristics of a wine, particularly a white wine, that has been over-aged? We tend to consume wine really young these days, but you mentioned in this episode that you were concerned that one of these wines may have already passed its prime at four years. I just had a seven-year-old, mid-priced chardonnay the other day that I thought tasted great (although the color was perhaps a little bit faded).

So is my palate just untrained, or would it be obvious if the wine were too old? What characteristics would it have if it were too old?

Thanks, and great show. I’m having a great time running through the old episodes.
