I’ve got the 2003 and 2004 Arnot Roberts Syrahs in my collection right now. Impressive stuff, although it’s slightly bittersweet seeing them here. Kind of liked having a boutique producer (relatively) all to myself.

Thanks for showing some up and coming wines. I’ll add them to my “future wines” spreadsheet and keep an eye out for them. Intrigued by all the wines.

I had a grandpa (Pepé) on my mom’s side who was great. He was Italian and fed me whenever we visited (too much sometimes!) He would peel apples in a long, continuous string and then we’d share the apple. I think of him when I peel apples.

QOTD: I don’t know who’s intuition to trust (in wine anyway.) I am not experienced enough. You mentioned “for 5 years all I drank were Cabs.” I have not got 1 year experience. I’m sure that when I have, I’ll be able to authoritatively state that a certain GV has great intuition.

    TheDumbPhase

I have to disagree about the Neal. I thought it was all over the place w/o much fruit & way too much oak. Then again, I haven’t liked too many ‘03 cabs. Gonna go for the Arnot though.
QOTD- Not you Jets lover. Maybe that other Gary that owns some wine stores…

I’m a new Vayniac (discovered the site through Cork’d a couple of weeks ago). I’ve gone through the old episodes and watched probably 50 or more of them, so I’m finally current.

Intuition? It used to be the people at the wine store I frequent, but more and more I trust my own.

I love the blog, Gary, entertaining and informative.

Oh, and did you see the NE Patriots have picked up some good players for next year? If not, check it out ;)

QOTD: I trust my intuition more than anyone else. Nothing pisses me off more then when I go against my intuition and I would have been right. I say follow your own intuition unless 1) it has proven not reliable in the past or 2) you lack intuition (obvi).

  31. March 12, 2007

    John Blue Label

    Gary,
Okay, now that I have gotten over your diss of SU (I lived in Syracuse for 20 year before moving to NC) I have to say this was a great episode. Very intringuing wines. I also love the vanilla extract flavor, so the Neal Cab is a definite buy. The Syrah also sounded very interesting.

QOTD: My wife had the best intuition of anyone I have every met. She can tell what kind of person you are after a 5 minute conversation. Picked out a couple of people that had me fooled, and later found out they were less than honorable. Want to go up against her????

Hey, you have to admit, Syracuse got the shaft this year. They should have been in.

so happy to see you taste and like the Neal Cab. One of my favorites. In fact, I was just out to a group dinner in NYC last night with Mark Neal, his wife and Gove, the winemaker. Great, great people, making excellent, fairly priced wines wines. In fact Mark has not raised the price on his Cab in like 7 years!

I hope you start carrying their Zinfandel, its one of the best I’ve had.

    Jason R.

That’s right! Don’t go Grapplin’ with a Gopher! Big Ten Champs and soon to be NCAA champs (March 15-17)!

  50. March 12, 2007

    Corrado

Someone already pointed this out, but Gary made a rare mistake on the price of the Neal; it’s about $28, not $45.

I was somewhat pleased to see the Pinot review from Rosella. I’ve got a PB I’ve been looking at from that area and was hoping to get a sense of what comes outta there. Not sure this really helped, but it gives me a little food for thought.

QOTD: I’m selfish, so above all, I trust my own intuition. If I find someone with better instincts, I’ll change that assessment, but so far, I’m it! :)

Top 101? Geez Gary, you have to reach back to that Richmond-Orangemen game to suggest that you have Final Four ‘intuition”? My god man, you weren’t even potty trained then (I know, I know, I’m assuming you are by now). You became a legend not because of the pick, but that somehow you knew that that Richmond wasn’t on Staten Island. Oh, I did enjoy the episode, as usual.

QOTD – anybody but mine (my stock market results will to prove that).

  54. March 12, 2007

    YoungDave

Top 55? Weak- gotta get back on top like last Friday.
Thank you again, Big G. for showing a few under-the-radar wines.
Also- great Grandfather reference and, almost as important, GREAT BIG WHEEL reference for the younger crowd- I have many a fond memory of cruising the neighborhood on my prized big wheel and “peeling out” until I wore a whole in that plastic wheel!
ANYWAY- I remember my Grandfather (Pop-Pop) who used to say that he “swallowed a basketball” when rubbing his pot belly…it took me a while, but I finally realized that it was a joke. Also, he enjoyed his “happy hour” when he’d enjoy a glass of wine in the evening which deffinitely kept him young. Ahh- content old Grandfathers- may all of us guys be fortunate enough to get to that point some day.

QOTD: Well, let’s keep this tribute to Grandfathers going: I trust(ed) “Pop-Pop’s” (my Mom’s dad) intuition the most. No matter how old he got, he always read the news and kept up with current events so that he was always in touch with the world- never out-of-touch. He stayed sharp as a tack in his elderly years, and stayed young at heart regardless of the effects of time. Here’s to Pop-Pop, and to the wise old man in the lives of all of the WLTV family members.

  55. March 13, 2007

    cyrock1

QOTD: Mine. I’ve got one wine rep who I trust, only because he dogs wines that he brings in to sample. “It tastes like red raspberry, lightly oaked …. but I don’t really like it.” I love his honesty ad he is usually on. I’m starting to trust GV too.

    KKKKKKUUUUUUUUU!!!

Kansas all the way! I’m opening that Vielle Julienne Châteauneuf-du-Pape for their first round game on Friday and the nicest bottle I can find for when they get to the championship game. And a huge Syrah for the 15th via suggestion from Gary.

Unfortunately, I can’t see anybody beating Georgetown this year unless there’s a miracle if I think logically. Eh. Go Hawks.

  57. March 13, 2007

    dealbhadair

Thanks for telling me about four up-and-coming wines I can’t afford right now, Gary! By the time I can buy them, they’ll all be ‘old hat’. But, at least I can say, “I saw a guy taste that one! He says it’s great!”

QOTD: Not really sure I could point to anyone in particular… I know that I keep finding out that I should trust my own intuition more!

  58. March 13, 2007

    Panoca

    Nice episode like usual. Invaluable.
    QOTD: Mine.
    Thanks Gary.

Gary, As a matter of interest is the Arnot blend co-fermented or blended and is the viognier the same vintage as the shiraz?

QOTD: Intuition is what enables a women to contradict her husband before he says anything.

  60. March 13, 2007

    Shotgun

Good selection of wines. The Cali Syrahs are really coming on strong. I love them.

The UF Gators will rule the roost again at the NCAA– too much talent. I have to say though that Georgetown is playing some pretty good ball right now, so watch out for them. Ohio St will be like their football team… destined for a serious meltdown in round two or three.

QOD– I don’t trust intuition. Only good judgment based on long experience and hard work.

  61. March 13, 2007

    Sebaf74

    Hi Gary,

I have been posting in the forum for a few days now, but this is the first time that I post a comment for an episode. Just wanted to confirm that I will destroy you in the NCAA challenge :) and that I have Georgetown going all the way.

QOD – Is this a trick question? :) Of course that I trust MY intuition. Oh well, and when it comes to wine I trust yours a little too.

  62. March 13, 2007

    luckybecky

    Great episode Gary!

Loved hearing about your grandpa. Funny how certain flavors can trigger specific memories for us. For me, watermelon always brings good memories of my Granddad. We used to sit out on the back porch with huge slices of watermelon, and he never cared how messy or sticky I got. He was the world’s best watermelon picker and had the thumping technique down to a fine art.

QOTD: I only trust my own intuition, and it has almost never steered me wrong.

Thank you for sharing about your Grandad. Isn’t it strange how a scent can dredge up such long ago memories? Happens to me all the time.
NCAA Brackets: My FAVORITE time of the year. We’ll be at Rounds 1 & 2 in Lexington and the St. Louis regional. I can’t wait!! Go Bucks!!

QOD: My late Grandmother was very intuitive. Also, our dog and horses seem to know that something is about to happen before we do; especially when trail riding and a snake is near.

  65. March 13, 2007

    boyd

    Entered the NCAA tourney baby!

I trust my wife’s intuition the most. She’s right pretty damn often.

And just as an aside, you damn well better be doing WLTV this time next year. Now that I can’t buy from you guys, this is all I have!

  66. March 13, 2007

Kansas is going to DESTROY this year. We got screwed in the first round the last couple of years, but this year, we’re #1 in our division, we just won the big 12, and we’re ready to BRING IT!!! Unfortunately i’ll still be in France for the victory celebration

QOTD, I’d trust the exact opposite of my own intuition (Seinfeld, anyone?)

Amen ’bout the cali Cab and Chardonnay too. Having grown up in the 80’s with a dad who was a total foodie I had waaaay too many overoaked, one dimensional cabs and chards in NY restaurants. Also I guess even though they can be great I just need new experiences and those are the wines of my youth (pre 21) that I’m just kinda bored of.

  77. March 13, 2007

    PattyO

Man! My mouth was watering even before you tasted the Arnot Roberts – just the blend was so my cup of tea! AND YOU’RE SOLD OUT ON IT?! I am sad, sad, and sad again.

  78. March 13, 2007

    cobbpa

I’m pretty new to all of wine, but I’ve watched most of the videos over the past couple of weeks & am really enjoying learning from you Gary! A couple of times I’ve picked up wines I see good ratings or reviews for but then I just don’t enjoy them. Lately it was a 2005 Terrazas Malbec. Should I be avoiding wines so young, or is it just my untrained tongue not appreciating it? I’d like if you could review this one (although I see WL only has the 2004, which was rated slightly higher) because I was hoping for more enjoyment.
Whether you do or don’t review it, keep the episodes coming!

  79. March 13, 2007

    Elliot Essman

Good theme for a tasting, and I am really excited to see how you will commemorate the upcoming episode 200. As to intuition, I trust my own, often from a negative point of view. Having a bad feeling about getting on a plane means you probably shouldn’t get on the plane, and I assume having a bad feeling about drinking a wine has similar meaning, although of course you can nose the wine first.

  80. March 13, 2007

    Greg

Gary, do you know of a Chard similar to the Bjornstad, but maybe a little less expensive?

    Thanks!

  84. March 13, 2007

The price of the Neal cabernet is as GV said… check the website.

  85. March 13, 2007

    Neurodoc

Great episode!! (I’ve met Ed Kurtzman, Mark Neal and Gove.) The problem with Cali Pinots these days is that the good stuff now costs over $40. Give us a taste of good pinots for less than $30, now that would be nice. I agree with the Neal cab assessment. Nicely balanced wines, and great to find a Napa cab in that price range that is that good. But in my opinion, something keeps these cabs from being really excellent and I’m not sure what it is. Somehow they don’t have the depth, breadth or intensity of the big boys (of course the price is more reasonable, so that counts for a lot)

In going with your theme, my grandfather’s intuition was trustworthy when I was growing up. However, he only turned me on to Scotch, not wine.

  86. March 13, 2007

    Wino

First of all, another really great episode.

Second of all, you lost me today telling me you picked Richmond over my Syracuse Orangemen so many years ago. Painful memory. Then they get hosed out of this years dance………

QOTD- I trust my fathers intuition more than any other. My wife is a close second with a women’s intuition that has been very dead on. Gary’s nose is getting there, but I trust my mouth more.

  87. March 13, 2007

    eatapc

Hmmm … socks, mud pie, concrete, cheap leather or “pleather” … for $43 bones. Pass. Confirms my opinion of the pinot noir grape. There are too many great wines at reasonable prices from other grape varietals to try before I die.

I don’t trust pinot noir scoring at all. Gary hit the nail on the head: “Tasting notes are more important than scores.” That Neal Cab sounds like a hit to me.

QOTD. Who’s intuition do I trust the most? No one’s, least of all mine. Intuition is another word for lazy irrationality. — Mark B

  88. March 13, 2007

    Karl B

    QOTD: Wine Spectator

  89. March 14, 2007

    Lawrence Leichtman

Great tasting notes. Have had the Neal and the Bjornstad, in fact my wife loves it. Appreciated the notes on the Neal as I also have an Uncle Shaya though he never bought me vanilla ice cream (in fact he is a pain). As to intuition, I know you are married, whose intuition is better, yours or your wife’s?

  90. March 21, 2007

    TSchampaert

Ha, nice. ‘Pleather’, have to keep that in mind next time I go for some Pinots or Pomerols. Hope to find the Neal or especially the Roberts one time over here. Last on ereally sounds great. Blending Vio in Syrah can be great. Have had some SA wines that use the same trick to spice up their Syrah, to have it not to flabby jammy. Last one I had (Fairview) wasn’t a real hit however. Pitty, expected too much maybe. Lacked some depth and poise.
QOTD: intuition, mmm, my own when there is smth bad to expect. My girlfriend’s when there is smth good at hand.
QOTD for you: were organizing a ge together with some Belgian winebloggers. Theme sweet wines from all over the world. Smth that I shouldn’t forget to bring to the table? We already have an Alois Kracher TBA, a Tokaji (Diznoko 5 put 1995), a Coteaux du Layon, a Picolit, a Premières Côtes sweet wine with some additional Gewurz blended into it, what else?
