Hmmm I was thinking about splurging for a bottle of Beaucastel because I’ve never had it, but for $70? Still not sure. Have you tasted Tablas Creek? Did a search on WLTV and didn’t find anything…

We carry the ‘99 Beaucastel Chateauneuf Du Pape on the reserve list at the Italian restaraunt where I serve. It’s the only French wine we carry. I haven’t been able to sell a bottle yet, but sounds like when I do my guests will be pleased.

    Gary,
Very nice EP. Appreciate your comments on the Gaja (i.e., that it may not be a QPR, but is extraordinary and should be sought out). Am a little surprised that you were not more “wow’d” by the Beaucastel. Have to agree with GeneV and Dumbphase that they may not be showing nearly as well as they are, even with some decant time. Then again it certainly is possible WS went a little overboard with their rating too, and the reality is somewhere in between.

Just received the Pecorino Grand Cru cheese today, made possible by the fine folks at WL. MAN, IS THAT GOOD!!!. Cheese and wine are two of the most wonderful creations in the world, and this Pecorino is absolutely wonderful. Cudos GV and the staff. Thanks for sending some my way. You should have more “cheese offerings” to go with all the wine I’ve bought!!!!

I got a chance to taste the 2004 Beaucastel Du Pape Red a few weeks ago, I had no idea it was rated so high. That being said, I love the description and I love Rhone wines. We need an all Rhone special.

Gary, nice oak monster your kids must love it. How about a t-shirt with an animated oak tree pumping a wooden butter churn. Perhaps kinda lookin like he’s pumping something else and of course the old red circle with a slash thru it.

I have noticed that gary talks about an explosion in his mouth a lot, and now he mentioned having something sprayed on his face….I am starting to wonder

QOD: Maybe you can offer something similar to “Amazon Prime”. Pay an annual fee and get free or discounted shipping for the entire year. Hope that helps. Great episode!!!

My name is Doug, and I’m a lurker.

GV: How about an episode where you review one of the earliest episodes, sort of Mystery Science Theatre 3000 style, and make fun of how low-energy and awkward the show was when it first started out. Maybe one of your tech guys could edit it picture-in-picture so we can see/hear exactly what you’re making fun of in the original episode. Finally, you could even re-taste the wines from the original episode and compare your tasting notes/ratings. Better yet, do it blind!

QOD – I agree with some earlier comments pertaining to 1/2 price shipping for purchasing a certain quantity of wine (perhaps an incremental scale). Free is best, but any discount is always appreciated!

I’ve been spreading the word to all fellow wine enthusiasts I know to try and tune-in (hopefully I’ll see a post from someone I know)!

Criticism – New video player has a problem with streaming / buffering. Sometimes it works well (when there is a good connection or the time is right), sometimes it works poorly. The advantage of the old player was that it was possible to pause and the video would continue to download… the video could then be played without interuption. The new video player can be paused however it breaks the connection which then needs to be rebuffered…. if the connection happens to be slow (my end or your end) and the player does a poor job of regulating the stream… the video is stuttered and needs to rebuffer every few seconds. I do agree that it looks good.

A positive note, the show is entertaining as always, (thanks again), it has encouraged me to try other wines and varieties… Cheers. Christopher

GV: I loved the Beaucastel review! I saw a website for the Wine Century Club, for those who have tasted over 100 varietals. http://www.winecentury.com/ I made my list, and while I’m NOWHERE near 100, it’s fun to shoot for. Beaucastel can give me 13 varietals, are there any other wines you’d suggest that are blends of lesser-known grapes?

Is intimated the new slang for “hooking up?’

“Yeah, me and Suzy had a bottle of Barbaresco last night and got mad intimated, yo! It was ribs!”

This is my first time to visit the site, I clicked over from Corkd.com. Great site, great job, keep it up! Let me know if you plan an event in Atlanta.

    Gary,

I’ve been meaning to comment on the new video feed, I really like it. I like the tags that allow you to go back and look at specific segments.

I like Barbaresco alot but I haven’t had anything in the $125 price range. However, I will be in Vegas on business in two weeks, so maybe I’ll find it on a wine list there.

    Have fun in France!

Don’t see a link for the cheese and it did sound like a great buy. The wines didn’t today. 03 is not going to cut it for me on the Gaja. The vintage just isn’t good enough to spring for the cost. I’m always puzzled why Beringer gets such high ratings. They have had so many problems over the years with the horrible Bret contamination one year and wines I have always found over-priced and under-impressive. If I want to chew oak I’ll eat the furniture not drink wine. Beaucastle somtimes is great some times so so but always expensive. They seem to have had the biggest rise in price but not quality as of late.

    Question of the day….

Gary, How about you have a contest. Open it to the top 100 people that refer the most people to the site that leaves coments with their name (the person that refered them) at the bottom. It offers free shipping to the people that bring out the lurkers. It also doesn’t reward the people that do not participate. If you are going to swallow the cost of shipping…people who put in little or no effort should not reap the rewards.

    Lurker no more.
    Big fan of parmiggiano reggiano.
I pretty much put in on everything.

Heart info: a study recently concluded that garlic (key compound: allinin/allicin) really is not effective against high HDL. So who knows. As for Niacin, don’t take high levels without seeing a doctor. Seriously. It causes hot flashes and it can really mess you up, unless a doctor is watching out for you. And a daily glass or two of red wine supposedly can help your heart health, but the antioxidants (e.g., flavonoids) supposedly are also present in dark, non-alcoholic grape juice, so the AHA says that unless you already drink, there’s no good reason to start. So there’s lots of cardiovascular info floating around on the ‘net, but consumer beware.

By the way, this has nothing to do with the fact that I love the vino. Love it, and love the show. Just saying, everyone out there should take this heart stuff seriously, and just be careful with the info.
