QOTD- Once we had a drinking contest for the Indy 500 everyone had to pick a lap that the first crash would occur and the winner got to call drinks for the rest of the day- I picked the first lap and a guy crashed in the warm up lap right before the green flag fell and I won!

    Gary,

Great show and a fraction of the 200th episode, but still enjoyable.

Top ten is a first for me.

    Ken B.

P.S. So far in the NCAA we are 100% on the pridictions. Should be interesting.

    Gary,

Glad to see #201. I’m seriously thinking you need to scale back from a daily show though. Either that, or find a partner at Wine Library to hand the show off to on your “days off”.

    Seriously.

QOD: Greatest prediction ever was that I would be living in the Sonoma wine country by Summer ‘06. Nailed it exactly, and predicted it in April ‘05.

    * I predicted that NC St (Jim Valvano) would win the ‘83 NCAA tourney – taking my pool!
    * I predicted the winning numbers on the only week I ever entered the NJ lottery

    but my best prediction:
    * the first time I ever laid eyes on my wife (to be) (in a fitness center) I turned to my friend next to me and declared I would marry her.

    Gary..
Tasting together!!! Could you possibly send an e-mail blast or post in the forum..the wines you plan on tasting on your next episode of WLTV. It really would help. I really enjoy comparing my tasting notes with yours…and if I knew what you planned on tasting..I would have stocked up on the wine before each episode. I t would be fun to really taste it live with you..and it might be ogod for business for you! ;-)

  29. March 15, 2007

    Dom

Unfortunately, I did not “taste along” since Dominus was not included in the lineup but nevertheless a good show. Do more of them.

QOTD: The most recent prediction has to be when we beat the Chiefs, Ravens, spanked the Pats and then Da Bears! I knew it. Got the monkey off my back!

Cheers and have a great trip,

    Peyton

P.S. To Belichick: Keep signing the likes of Donte Stallworth. It won’t help.

QOTD– When I first moved to Chapel Hill in 1981 I went to a basketball game and watched a kid from Willmington, NC. I turned to my husband and said “He’s got the shine” From the first game I saw him play I knew he was a special player– Even I didn’t realize just how special it was to watch Micheal Jordan his freshman year. Every March I remember that special 1981-82 season.

  37. March 15, 2007

    Rita Ladany

My greatest prediction is that my DD would marry My DSI. And that was 7 years before
the question was popped! Like a Great bottle of Champagne!
It did happen and I was the matron of honor.
Now I see the other predictions are sports related and so is mine! :) ;)

    QOTD-Prediction #1 – Raptors win 2007 NBA championship

QOTD: I had two – 1) Sox would run off 4 in a row on the Yanks 2) Clinton was probably doing something other than smoking that cigar …

To be honest, I predicted #1 many times and it finally happened … #2 was genuine, got it right the first time!

    Hey, Gary, was unable to get the wines, but the show was fab as always. Took some great notes. QOD: Greatest predidiction? Don’t make them. I’m more entertained by others’ predictions…:}

You almost lost Dirtbag rights with this episode Gary!!! – I mean a pink shirt? cmon man!!!

  44. March 15, 2007

    KenP

Hey folks! GV asked for a high number of responses from now to Sunday so that he might secure ‘05 Bordeaux futures. Let’s go! We need one hundred and fifty plus in short order. Lurkers, get with the program: a note, a simple message. We needs to convince, by sheer numbers, that we are seriously interested in the ’05’s.
(GV, what about Burgandy? Same story. Under the radar.)

  45. March 15, 2007

    John

    Hey Gary
WEll if I had watched earlier I wouldn’t have had a greatest prediction ever comment, but now, since my Alma Mater VCU, just knocked Duke out of the Tourney which I predicted, that would have to be my greatest prediction so far. I am 89.3% correct so far on my picks….

Also, a while ago you mentioned to watch out for the Snake River Valley in Idaho as a big up and comer, I read today, that the SRV just will recieve AVA status as of APril 9th. WORD

    QOTD-
Greatest Prediction#1: Ice Bowl December 31, 1967 Packers defeat Cowboys in closing drive and last 4.5 minutes of the game in 13 degree below weather at Lambeau. I was 8 yrs old at the time and already a die-hard Packer fan. Best block by Jerry Kramer on Jethro Pugh. My Aunt Tillie could have scored on that play.
GP#2: Bucky Dent’s game winning 3 run homer against the Boston BloSox in Boston for the American League Pennant in the playoff game on 10/2/1978. Awesome!!

  47. March 15, 2007

    JonE

Greece, the final frontier. Gary sometimes you push even those of us who have worked in the business for awhile. Good effort.

QOTD: Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Carrie Underwood, and I never even watch the show. That A-Rod would suck completely last year. That Roy Jones Jr. would never make it as a heavy weight, and afterwards look completely pitiful. That those Phat Farm coats are made of dog hair. I mean come on.

  48. March 15, 2007

    stevo

Nice EP GV. As a wine newbie, I really enjoyed the more detailed explanations of how to taste and what to evaluate. I didn’t taste along, but would be interested in the future.

My greatest prediction: (to my wife) That I would never wear a pink shirt. Still holding strong!

  49. March 16, 2007

    Portland Guy

QOTD – George W. Shrub will be 1)the dumbest pres we have ever had, and 2) the worst! Two for two, most will agree.

SoSo episode, GV — but you have earned that trip. Find us a free shipping bordeaux, please.

  50. March 16, 2007

    SoCal

QOTD: While in the stands watching USC’s 1st season under Pete Carroll I predicted they would win at least one National Championship.

Have a great time in Bordeaux!

  51. March 16, 2007

    vinnyd

    QOTD:
    1. That Duke would suck it up last night and be the only major first round upset :)
Go VCU! (I’m with ya John W)

    2. Peyton Manning would throw over 3 picks in the playoffs.

    3. That I would become addicted to trying new wines long before I had the financial resources to do so!

    4. And of course, that my alma mater Rutgers would defeat Louisville this past season.
    – While we’re at it, here’s a new prediction – RU wins the big east in the 2007 season.

  52. March 16, 2007

    lifestooshort

Wait, so, us (say, 90%) and a little bit of you (say, 10%) makes this “Change the Wine World” vino a blend?? :D

    Sebaf74

    Gary,

Nice episode! Too bad you are not doing as good as you thought with the NCAA picks :)

QOTD: One of my greatest predictions happened in the last season of the NFL. We had a confidence pool going on in the office and I picked the Titans to beat the Colts and gave it 10 points, while most others were giving 12-14 points to Indy. I pointed my pick out to other people before the game too, telling them I was sure that the upset was going to come.

  55. March 16, 2007

    Fingerlaker

QOTD: being the rare upstate ny syracuse univ hater.. i predicted them losing to the Richmond Spiders (i think it was late 80s early 90s) in the first rd of the tourny. need less to say living less than 20 miles from SU i didnt have many friends at the time.

Take a break Gary. This is a great show and we want you to be
here for awhile. My wallet is getting thin but my cellar is
filling up and I love to come to the store on the way to the “city”.

QOTD: Gary will be on national TV doing a Wine “short” weekly.
    I have been right before!!

  58. March 16, 2007

    Rick McQ

    My two best Predictions:

Maddona will never make it! Said in the Early 80’s after “Borderline” came out

The group Asia will be the next Beatles! Early 80’s

  59. March 16, 2007

    Lawrence Leichtman

In 1966 I predicted Al Gore would invent the Internet. Since that time I have made billions on that prediction alone. Hah, I can’t even pick brackets in the NCAA or stocks. My only accurate predictions are medical and that is, for better or wrose, my job. These three wines for me were puzzling. I could not appreciate the structure in the Chardonnay that you could. I really can’t get a feel that the tannins will resolve in the Greek wine before the fruit disappears and the Syrah should develop but the price is too high to put away any of this wine when I can buy less expensive Syrahs I can drink over 5-7 years. I do put away a lot of wine but I’m getting older and buying a lot of wines that need to be held for 10-15 years at my age may not be good investments. I already have a stock of Dunn Howell Mountain that I may never really get to drink because the darn things age so slowly and putting away new Bordeaux wines in not even feasible. I’m looking for intemmediate agers 5-10 years is OK.

  60. March 16, 2007

    dougiefresh

Dude, weak! Three fairly expensive wines only one of which we enjoyed. Tasting the hammond the day before threw off our blind tasting, plus, that Greek wine smelled exactly like cow manure. whew!!!

The syrah did come through at the end in a big way to save the night.

Episode 200 was outstanding and yes, you are still the man, but in the WLTV spirit of “keeping it real”, I gotta rate the taste along episode a 79. And at $150 bones!? I give it a major PAAASSSZZZZ. ; )

  61. March 16, 2007

    TimInFL

    HELP….

    MY BRACKETS ARE BLOWING UP!

  62. March 16, 2007

    TagWorld Brian

Wines sounded interesting. Kinda sorry I didn’t play the WLTV Home Version along with you, but wasn’t prepared. (And wife would’ve skinned me for dropping $150 samolians on an experiment.)

But… I like the Greece inclusion. I’m not Greek. But I just like learning about niche stuff. Nice article recently in WS about Greece. Wonder if it’s a gestalt thing. Or if you read WS and then the thought rattles around in your mind for awhile.. Hmmm.. let’s do a Greek wine. If that’s how it works, then here’s another one: sake. Big sake article in the new WS, and my friends and I are doing a big sake tasting in a few weeks. Because of your job, I suspect you’ve tried A LOT more sake than I ever have, but it’s probably not an expertise. So I’m interested to see how you’d deal with those wines.

QOTD: I don’t know what my BEST prediction has been. But I’ll tell you one thing. When I watch “24″, I can predict every line with almost 85% certainty.

  63. March 16, 2007

    Stéphane

QOTD: I predicted Zidane would score a penalty kick in the final of the 2006 World Cup a week before the tournament even started. (Most people thought France wouldn’t even make it out of the group stage…) Didn’t predict how it would end though!

  64. March 16, 2007

    TagWorld Brian

QOTD on predictions. From this month’s WIRED: “…It was while he was in his PhD program that [Palm Pilot & Treo inventor/entrepreneur Jeff] Hawkins stumbled upon the central premise of [his book] ‘On Intelligence’: that prediction is the fundamental component of intelligence. In a flash of insight he had while wondering how he would react if a blue coffee cup suddenly appeared on his desk, he realized that the brain is not only constantly absorbing and storing information about its surroundings – the objects in a room, its sounds, brightness, temperatature – but also making predictions about what it will encounter next.” [Maybe this quote belongs on Terroir Blog instead...I think Tom would enjoy it.]

So I guess the smarter we are, the better we can predict what a wine will smell/taste like. But half the fun of this is getting thrown for a loop with surprises. So maybe it’s better to be dumb and taste great wines, than be smart and taste average wines. Dunno..

  65. March 16, 2007

    Denman Dave

    Good show Gary…. as always.
QOTD – every night I predict I’ll wake up the next morning…. never been wrong!
I predict Sanjaya is toast next week. OMMMMM

  66. March 16, 2007

    damon

aw, man. I felt left out. Hope you do this again.

  67. March 16, 2007

    Atreyu

QOTD: It’s not the greatest prediction but it’s funny. I was on campus and there was a guy skating with naked torso so that all the girls could see him. He was pretty good but I hated him because he was acting cool (and getting the attention from my girlfriend). Then I said: “wouldn’t it be funny if he fel down?”. And after a few seconds he was on the floor, and many people laughed at him (me too).

    Have fun in Bordeaux!
Hope you relax and get some energy. We’ll miss you!

If anyone reading this comment is a fan of LOST, please do not follow the link below. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

QOTD: One of my greatest predictions was this. I didn’t document my prediction anywhere, but I had told a ton of friends last season.

  69. March 16, 2007

    yowens44

Syracuse National Hoops Champs 1 game (1GAME!) into the season in 2002. I was laughed at.

Scary how nerdy yet weird people are:

They have to be 1st to post a meaningless message.

QOD – about 10 years ago my cousin bill was 12 years old, and I predicted to my brother and parents that he would grow up to be 100% gay…he came out of the closet at age 20.

dont knock guys in pink shirts…I am rocking purple today

  76. March 17, 2007

    GeneV

    Gary,

Sorry I did not get the wines to taste along. I find Greek wines very interesting. Xynomavro is one of the most interesting–like ancient pinot noir. The tannic Greek wines work well with Gyros or a nice lamb chop.

I hope you fly first class to France and get some good sleep on the plane.

  77. March 18, 2007

    YoungDave

QOTD: The best prediction I’ve ever made was probably when I said “What kind of wine is this?…hmmm sounds interesting…I think I’m going to start getting into this stuff…”

  78. March 18, 2007

    Trish da' Dish

I can’t recall any truly great predictions that I’ve made–mostly, I’ve simply taken wild guesses and any wins that I’ve experienced have been sheer luck, usually based on loyalty to the STL Rams/Cards, or on my hopes (that some arrogant team that I absolutely HATE didn’t win the championship game).

I do have some comments about today’s comments, though:

#43-Pink makes many guys look really hot! I love seeing guys in colors–sometimes I’ve noticed them from way across a room based on how their shirts have brought their faces out. I usually tell guys that I like their cute shirts, too, so that they know that they’ve made the right fashion move. My girlfriends agree with me about how are really liking this new color thing going on with men’s clothes. Think peacocks: The most successful guy peacocks are the most colorful ones, so that they can attract the girls! :-)

#57-I agree with your prediction that Gary V. is discontinuing WLTV in order to have his own new show on national TV. However, I think that his new show will be airing several times a week, not just 1 time a week.

#64-I disagree strongly about an individual’s ability to evaluate wines being linked to having a high IQ. I’m in Mensa, and when folks get their drink on, believe me, it’s an average experience. No super-tasters present! Anyhow, although I have no data to support this, I DO believe that people who are “sensualists” may be more likely to have, or to be able to develop, superior tasting skills. Who do I consider to be “sensualists?” I would consider Gary V. to definitely be one. Also, people who naturally gravitate to fields of employ where their skills of observation are routinely called upon (writers, artists, chefs, great vets), and also people who lose a sense (ie., become blind) and develop enhancements of their other senses as adaptive tools. Basically, I think it very likely that all of us are physically capable of doing the same thing, but mentally most of us lack the descriptive tools and the ability to make ourselves “sit back, relax, and smell the wine” so that we may recall our mental tools from our toolboxes!

  79. March 18, 2007

    Bobinnati

Gary – I love these shows where you get more instructional. Helps a newbie like me to understand wine tasting a bit more.

I have three questions for you.

#1 – With these very young wines, could you store them warm (80 – 85 F) for a year and consequently have them act as if they were aged naturally for 4 or 5 years? That is, can you accelerate the aging a bit without destroying them. Obviously, too much heat will be detrimental, but I wonder about prodding them a little.

#2 – When you taste wines, you go from one right to the next with very little time in between, probably because you’ve been doing this forever. I would think intuitively, that the residual flavors in your mouth from the first wine might influence how you perceive the next wine. Would it help an inexperience wine taster to perhaps eat a couple of saltines and drink a bit of water between wines in order not to confound the flavors or is that unnecessary?

#3 – Could you consider doing an episode where you taste some wines that HAVE been properly aged, especially if you had tasted them when they were young and can describe the changes that took place with aging.

Thanks and I really enjoy WLTV, but I’m going into the poorhouse buying all of your recos!! By the way, I have enjoyed everything that I’ve tried on your reco. Keep it up. As somebody else mentioned though, even though we all love the shows, you ought to slow down a little so you don’t burn out.

  80. March 18, 2007

With the theme of this taste-a-long, have you considered a WLTV wine club where you pick out the wines each month and ship them out and then have an episode on a consistent basis (like the first of every month) where everyone in the club could taste-a-long with you???

I apologize in advance if you get this suggestion 17 times a day.

Gary, I like you. I really like you. :)
My best prediction happen a couple of weeks ago. I go running around my neighborhood about every two weeks or so (yeah, avid exerciser… not.) I record my time using a kitchen timer that I leave just inside my apartment door. Two weeks ago, I jokingly predicted I would complete my run in 23 minutes and 47 seconds – because I was trying to beat my previous time of 24:36. So I went for my run and came trhough the door after, pressing the stop on my timer, and it was EXACTLY 23:47!!! I know, it’s kind of lame, but I was really amazed with myself, and now I’m glad I got to tell the story thanks to your prompt.
    Gary, you’re the best.

The Terroir Blog (March 5 article, “Do You Smell What I Smell?”) has a great photo of people smelling armpits! and it contains a great discussion between blog readers about why some people seem to be able to smell/taste more in a given wine than others. The contributing roles of genetics, education, and experience are all discussed. If this sounds interesting to you, you can easily check it out by clicking through the link Gary always has on the upper right hand side of this page.

Have a great time in Bordeaux, Gary. And I agree with the people that are saying they’d rather have you a couple times a week than not at all.

GV you said the Syrah was $68 but they put up $37 on the screen when you presented the wine. I prefer $37. Whaddya say?

Wearing a pink shirt is like singing in falsetto, ie it takes a real man to do it cuz you gotta have cajones. This is why it’s sexy, It’s like a guy is so comfortable with his masculinity that he doesn’t give a shizzle.

QOTD: Last year’s World Cup; I put $20 on both France and Italy to win and by the time the final came around I was assured of a very enjoyable game no matter what the outcome.

The new format stinks. New does not always mean better. The old format never stopped and started as much as this one does.

I’m having withdrawals though without the Vay-ner-chuk to enlighten me on new wines. :(

I’ve had the opposite experience. The new format rules. Old format was choppy for me on 3 different computers.
