You know GV that I have to keep you inline. Can’t wait to see what you secured on Bordeaux’s….please do tell what’s coming in as I am busting BORDEAUX.

QUTD…was one of your recommendations that I bough and never tried yet, 2003 Rainmakers Shiraz Grenache….TN’s coming soon to the What are you Drinking Forum.

QOTD: I don’t yet know what I will drink this evening. I had a 2000 Massolino Barolo recently, which was a pleasant surprise after a string of badly over ripe, out of balance, high wine spectator score 2000 barolos.

Hi Gary, did you realize that when you use that great big wine glass, it makes you seems like a little kid, stealing into the parents’ wine cabinet? Just wondering if it seemed like that to you…

These four Bordeaux — if you average the prices — come out at an attainable $77 a bottle. Not bad.

Tonight, I am drinking a Domaine Schoffit 2004 Alsatian Riesling, a very straightforward wine. I really appreciate getting this for $16 at Wine Library, and then seeing it elsewhere for up the $24. I hope you’re making a profit so you can stay in business.

Haven’t watched the episode yet,, but getting the idea that you’ll be asking what I’m drinking tonight?? Just received my allocation of Alban today,, but the little babies probably need some quite time after their long trip here, so maybe some of that Spainish juice I got from WL a few weeks ago?? update later……

I’m going to try the G-vine gin in a martini. I had a little sip of it on Sunday night and it was interesting. A little Asian spice heavy and a touch sweet. I’m interested to see how it works with vermouth. I’m also going to try the Brooklyn Brewery’s Local One. Perfect for a night like tonight.

Had the bellevue mondotte at executive wine seminars ‘03 Bordeaux tasting w/ Bob Parker…WOW. Astonishing example of primal fruit, dense aromatics and depth of the palate that still maintains a grounded Bordeaux sensibility…at 14.5 alcohol it’s gotta be packin’ more than any other young Bordeaux I’ve tasted (next to the ‘03 vieille cure).
Drinkin’ a verticle of Il Pareto back to 1990 to check in on the evolution of a somewhat unhearalded super tuscan.

Cool hearing a little more about your Bordeaux trip. Can’t wait to see more video!

QOTD: In honor of you being back from your trip, I’m going to open a 2002 Château Valrose red blend. It will not be any where near as nice as anything you drank today, but it’s a Bordeaux!

(I hope the Jets defeat Dallas. That will be a great way to celebrate Thanksgiving.
Only 31 more days until the draft!)

Thank you for educating this California native on the world of Bordeaux.

The sign behind Gary threw me a bit today. You see, my beloved Cowgirls are currently rocking through the NIT finals, and I couldn’t imagine why Gary was picking on my hometown college team (Cowgirls = U of Wyoming women’s teams). Once I figured it out, though, my anger dissipated. :)

QOTD, my hubby is up in Canada (where he’s picking up some Okanagan wines to bring home), so I’m on my own and treating myself to a super-huge fruit bomb from California: XYZin 50. I first tried this in a wine flight, with 3 wines from XYZin — they make a 10, 50, and 100 (all indicating age of the vines), and its a great learning experience to compare all three. Anyway, the one I liked most was the 50, with a huge vanilla bouquet and a long, fruity finish. Decanting it for a long while to burn off the heat.

QOTD: 2004 David Bruce Central Coast Petite Sirah. All this noise from Kahuna on the forums has provoked me to seek out and try as many PS as possible. I have no clue if any one is hearing the South African Syrah trumpet I have been playing.

Question for G: Will you do more SA Syrah….the good ones on WLTV? Please?

Well well well, I got your shoutout e-mail Gary, so what the hell, you know I can’t resist the charismatic pull of 50-point font. Love today’s episode – I’m trying to absorb as much info about Bordeaux as possible so I can actually start helping store customers with their French wine purchases – so many thanks!

QOTD: No wine for me tonight, but I did pop open a Gordon Brother’s cab the other day….whew, now that’s a fun wine for 20 bones!

69. March 27, 2007

loved the bordeaux episode today. i don’t usually plunk down $100+ for a bottle so i’ll have to vicariously taste through the g-man. i was in withdrawal so bad last week, i’d have taken a bonus video on the offerings from charles shaw.

I love French food and wine. In fact, I often go to a local French restaurant called Le Burger King. Their croissant’s and French fries pairs especially well with a jug-O-Chablis.

QOTD: Tonight I’m drinking 2000 Leeuwin Artist Cabernet Sauvignon and comparing it with a $9 Concha y Toro Cab.

Bottega del Vino hand blown optical crystal. You had the BV7 wine glass and the ‘Americano’ decanter in your episode. For anybody who has never heard of Bottega del Vino….look it up, check it out, buy a glass…do something….these crystal glasses are simply AMAZING!
Hey Gary-
Good picks on the wine today, but there is no way the Jets beat the cowgirls on thanksgiving…just pray that “2006 comeback player of the year”’s should will hold up until then cause Tui”Oops!”isoto is simply not a gamer. sorry buddy.

Gary,
Nice, fun episode. I appreciate the education on French wine. My QOTD for you, and I’m serious: if you wanted to buy a case of a Bordeaux wine right now, as an investment, and not to drink, what would it be??? You know I will do it!
Answer to your QOTD: Ugo Lequio Barbaresco Gallina 1998, to go with the Pecorino Grand Cru cheese that you recommended. Molta Bene!
Here’s another question for you: Which do you prefer: Italian or French ?

PS We need more cheese recommendations!!!!!

Kahuna, I think I threw up a little in my mouth on that watersports night comment. Thanks.

As for me, I had a long @ss day at work, it’s 80 degrees here in Jersey, and I cracked a Budweiser as soon as I walked in the door. I wasn’t really in the mood for the Bonny Doon chenin blanc in the fridge.

Oh Gary you’re such a tease…6-8 weeks! Abated breath…
QOTD: I usually play chance and spin eyes closed 3x in front of my wine fridge then grab at random. I just ran down to do this….and the result a Chateau de Valcombe Prestige. I have not had it yet. Maybe later in the “introduce yourself” forum I’ll give TN.

Kahuna – I have to give you some recognition on that comment. Rarely do I literally “LOL” but that had me laughing….

QOTD: 2002 Murphy Goode Wild Card (Claret) Wish I could get it at WL! Gary, I think you were thinking of a fruit compote when describing the flavor profile of the Chateau Bellevue Mondotte. Let’s send Gary 350 comments today!!!!!

Great episode-I know you’re like “what ever” but once again you rinsed out your glass with a $183 bottle of wine-what was that about $15 worth of rinse? So cool…
QOTD I finally grabbed a chilled white-hey its in the 80’s here in Ohio! and the first thing I grabbed was a 2005 Chateau Ste Michelle Riesling-was ok..a bit one dimensional but what do you expect from a bottle I bought at Kroger! It cooled me off at least.

101. March 27, 2007

elbowroom

Glad to see you back on the job. In one of my senior moments, I opened the WOTM #4 wine a week early, so tonight I will be finishing off a bottle of ‘99 La Palazzola Merlot from Umbria. Wine Liability gets credit for introducing the great wine to me through the 2000 vintage, at half what my local source was selling it for. Then I found the ‘99 being closed-out at a good price and bought several of them.

102. March 27, 2007

TonyT

Nice episode, I love seeing you taste the cult wines of our era (when they are available for sale to collectors). QOTD: I think I’ll have a 2002 Silver Oak Alexander Valley Cab, which is one of my all time favorites. What do you think of the Silver Oak wines?

103. March 27, 2007

Jennifer

Congratulations, SteveK!
QOTD: ‘05 Bluefish Riesling. Peculiar- forget Wine Enthusiast- nicer on the nose than on the palate. Garbage (I think). I’ll probably dump it. Not nearly as nice as the OJAI ‘04 Syrah Stolpman I had the other night that Gary recommended (thank you, by the way… it was nice).
Are we getting closer to the goal?

104. March 27, 2007

2005 Bordeaux is getting really pricey. From what I have tasted, 2003 second growths are pretty good drinking wines although not necessarily consistent.

I think Gary was fumbling for COMPOTE but I am not sure.

I am going to have some Waltzing Vine Shiraz from the old box.

Great show today Gary–I found your comments on the last wine tasted especially informative and also amusing.

Did you ever consider seriously practicing juggling wine corks? classic.

QOTD: Ognissole Primitivo di Manduria 2005 (Feudi–from Campagnia of all places). This wine is sick. Good sick. Tasted right out of the bottle, and then decanted and tasted again and again over the course of about 2 hours. Really rich, love the fruit which is present but not bomb-y, nice smooth finish, with the high alcohol not really obtrusive–well covered. Very drinkable now, but could also probably benefit from at least 2 years in the cellar. And, incidentally, great bottle/label design. A good price at $15.99, but wouldn’t go much higher.

Can’t wait to hear more about Bordeaux Gary – and I’ll be stopping by the WL on Thurs. morning for the first time – looking forward to it.

Gary,
A question about the cantenac and yesterday’s Sauvignon Blanc… Why do they smell the way they do?
Is the leather boot/feces/mousy smell terroir or yeast? What causes the tire/fuel smell on the sauvignon blanc? I have smelled a fuel smell on a sauvignon blanc before, but tried to convince myself it was on the glass, because I never heard it mentioned before.

QOTD: What am I drinking tonight? – Nothing, I’m still drying out from the fabulous wine tasting last saturday at Chambers Street Wines in the City.

We are changing the wine world!!
We started with Raventos i Blanc Cava poured over with fresh pureed strawberries and Grand Marnier. Yes we had this with of all things slow cooked baby back ribs!

As of right now we are enjoying Altos De Luzon Jumilla 2004.
Home goods in Woodbridge, NJ is were we purchased it.The glass very close to your glass I`ll see if I can get the picture to post! my DH is drinking out off the glass!
A little hint for heavy red wine drinkers like myself mix a bit of baking soda and peroxide to make a paste; brush with it and you will have a white smile. It`s a little gross but ohhh so worth it.
As for the fruit in liquid you were trying to come up with is
compote is the word you were looking for. You know dried fruit cooked in sugar syrup. It is also often used as a drink, in which case only the liquid is drunk and is usually less sweet.
Hey gary what about : Intellivision or are you too young?
Oh this one counts as 2 lurkers! Wait I`m not a lurkers but my DH is so I`m writing for him as well.

I’m looking forward to tasting a few wines with you in the future. You’ve got a great thing going here. I like your style.

The first episode I tuned into was #201 and then you were gone. I’ve already passed on the word about your vincast so I’m glad your back – it helps with the credibility factor.

Let’s help Gary win his bet. Start your own QOTD like this one:

What is you favorite reference made by Gary?

i.e. Today’s reference to “Back to the Future”.

143. March 27, 2007

Les

I’d like to know precisely what you mean by “silky”? In my experience the wines that send me seriously over the moon have what I describe as powdery, melt in your mouth (think cocoa powder on chocolate truffles) feel. I’m wondering if your “silky” is a similar word? Usually this “melted powder” feel is associated with what I, as a neophyte oenophile, consider to be mellow or balanced wine with softened tannins. Can you expand?

144. March 27, 2007

JonE

What about the 03′ Vielle Cure which also scored a 90? Would love a comparison. Good luck on the 350.

145. March 27, 2007

BUMP!!

Definitely need some more enlightenment about Burgundy GV. Get out the Maps, plot the regions. Tell us the histoire.. THEN taste the wine! From what I’ve read so far, the area is a lot more confusing than the neatly classified Bordeaux.

Nice ep., I enjoyed watching the last wine – 2003 Chat Bellevue Mondotte. Sweet decanter that was used to pour it. Did Gary say that it was fun to pour from that decanter? I wasn’t sure if he did…

What am I drinking tonight? You picked a night that we decided to do a budget wine. I picked up, at my local Kroger store, “Gum Bear” Unoaked Chardonnay by the Watson Wine Group from Australia for $5.99. I must say that I really was not expecting much but was pleasantly surprised. It had a nice acidity and a lot of fruit. I made a spicy Indian meal tonight, mustard seed chicken, and the wine complimented the meal nicely. I would like to add that I am a bit tired of the Australian wineries, or any winery for that matter, putting cute little animals on their wine.

$185 is a value huh? I gotta move to your ‘hood man. Too bad the old Reisling was a dud, but I bet it was cool to even get a shot at it. You know, corks are corks whether they’re real cork or synthetic cork. You’re never going to get a perfect seal. Air will always leak in (seein’ as how that’s what air does for a job) and over a long period of time will do some damage. Has any winemaker ever considered just flame sealing the neck of the bottle so that the bottle is perfectly airtight? Might be worth doing for some of those **s-kicking 2005’s you were talking about. If they have the chance to mature for 50 or 75 years, why not give them every advantage. Now, opening a flame sealed bottle could be a bit of a challenge, but if it was sealed right and maybe pre-scored, you could just snap off the top cleanly and there you’d have it, 80 year old wine with no influence from air.

Got a bottle of 2005 Winner’s Tank Shiraz open on the counter.

The 2005 bordeaux pricing is completely out of whack, at least among the top producers, they are effectively priced me out of the market. Enough lamenting, I’m drinking 2001 Tilenus Pagos De Posada from Bierzo region in spain, it was discounted to $25 from $42, tremendous wine with balance, complexity, not a typical spanish fruit bomb. A top notch effort.

Hey Gary
Well my wife is out of town on business so usually when that happens I tend to open more of the value wines from the collection. Tonight I had an XS RED 2005 Cab Sauv. An excellent $10 bottle of wine that is actually bottled by HESS. Really nice, fruit forward but balanced with great herbal and mushroom notes, although that was probably also amp’d by the sauteed shrooms I put on my veggie burger.

Bordeaux is amazing is it not? QOD– Drinking, or rather sadly past-tense have drunk, a wonderful Syrah from Nickel and Nickel (yeah they do a couple of wines other than their single vineyard Cabs) the Hudson Vineyard 2004– too young but ravishing. Started out with the remains of a bottle of Stags Leap Arcadia Chardonnay 2005 that was started last night– as Un-California a Chard as you might want- lean, mean, subtle subtle oak and probably little or no malolactic. Rombauer fans would hate it, which is fine by me, more for me to drink.

Because me, and a little bit of you, will get you to win your bet on the nuimber of comments tonight!!!

Drinking tonight? Opened a bottle of the 2005 Mollydooker Boxer, 95 pts Robert Parker. When I first had this when it came available in Sept/Oct. 2005 I thought it was just too hot. The alcohol (16%!)overpowered the juice. Very new world but I thought Parker was just off…maybe a 90-91….but no 95…just 5-6 months later the alcohol has tempered amazingly. The Boxer is silky smooth on the tongue with a robust and full mid palate…still quite strong on the finish but I was very impressed for a $20 wine…played well above its price tag. For those that panned the Boxer on release as just too much over the top I think they will be pleasantly surprised…I am already looking forward to what another 6 months will do….this could be awesome in 2-3 years….

Keep up WLTV…!!!

Comments for the sake of comments are silly (1 word? come on people). Say something useful! The bet should have been 350 UNIQUE comments, not counting the 26 comments from Susan (yes, I counted)

Mmmmm Bordeaux. So far I’ve purchased 3 cases of 2005 futures, and will probably get some more in the coming months (trying to do one case a month, but this month I had to get the 2001 Caprili Brunello di Montalcino ($29.80/bottle for a 93 point Tanzer wine? SIGN ME UP! And yes, I had a bottle first, and it’s awesome; just too young)). I’m trying to stick more in that $30/bottle range. Definitely seems to be some good stuff there… the highest I’m going is the Branaire (Duluc-Ducru) at $60/bottle… lots of people scoring that one above 95! Too bad you guys are out of it, so I have to get it elsewhere. :-(

QOTD: 2003 Zenato Ripassa. Mmmm delicious!

QOTD: Finishing off a bottle I opened yesterday. 2004 Banfi Chianti Classico (Lars’ review: 86 pts. won’t rock your world, but is a nice chianti with food. Wet pebbles, earthy nose. Soft tannin with a hint of red cherry coming through.)

To weigh in on the Pillar Box – I think it is overrated. Bought a bottle this weekend – had a half of a glass and poured the rest out. Totally over it. I may not have had the best frame of mind…I was dehydrated and tired from snowboarding all day. Still, my judgement was not that far off.

Been a long time since I posted. Great episode to re-enter the field. I will be stopping into WL this week to pick up some Bordeaux – you really piqued my interest again. Don’t know if I’ll go for the Mondotte, but i will definitely be treating myself.
QOTD: 2000 Ch. Tour de Segur (from WL) – totally coincidental. Not a great bordeaux, but OK.

Vayniacs will definitely break 400 tonight!

QoD: 2005 Jekel Vineyards Monterey County Pinot Noir, $17, is what it is. I like it, nice cherry fruit with good balance of acidity with the fruit, spice, and loamy soil & asparagus. In this price range I would totally reccomend Australia’s Hill of Content Pinot Noir which has it all going on and I know most of you out there wouldn’t go near Pinot under $30, but that one brings it. Stop by Wegmans and show us love. Peace! Gary, you eat shellfish? that’s not kosher. Happy Holidays!

QOTD: Tonight I open my next to last bottle of the 2001 Patricia Green Balcombe Block 1B. This wine is clearly in it’s peak. If you have any 2001’s from Paty Green crack one to see what you think.
Nose: Dusty boots in a fresh tilled field. You can almost smell the rocks and greenery that has been churned up for the planting season. A heavy raspberry scent with a light coat of cinnimon leads to the smell of a cracked cherry that makes your cheeks pucker just thinking about it.
Taste: In the mouth this is extreemely seductive and smooth. There is a nice ballance and the acid is ever so slightly dominant as flavors of wild strawberries and carmalized sugar come through. This is a very rustic wine both in the nose and in the mouth….a superb effort.
Finish: is 20-30+ seconds and coats your mouth like a blanket coats your bed in the cold of winter. Drink over the next 18 months for peak quality.
92+ points.

First timer. My son told me about Wine Library, so I checked out the site. Been lurking for a few days now. Watched about a dozen episodes and was really rocked by #148. It’s a classic. Excellent episode today. Looked for the Chat Bernadotte 2003 ($18.99) locally and saw it On Sale for $26.49 !!! Guess I’ll be making a trip to Springfield this weekend . Jets 27, Cowboys 23.

WOW this episode was a veritable cornicopia of information, a plethora of factiods, in other words as my favorite high school english teacher would say “a fuckload” of data about Bordeaux!! (I hope this doesn’t get me censored.) Great great show Gary!!!!!!!!!!!
QOTD:Opened a 1999 Boxler Sommerberg grand Cru Riesling I got recently for $28 bones and I must say it was a dissapointment. I had a waaay better Boxler this Fall in Napa, more recent vintage. Not bringing the thunder for some reason. I gave it an 88.

So glad to have you back, Gary! Great episode!!! Love all the info about Bordeaux, look forward to what’s coming! QOD: Tonight, wanted a Paulliac…instead, settled for a lovely little Zin from a local winery in my neighborhood. Tonight, it’s 2003 Joseph Filippi Cucamonga Valley Zin. Tonight, drank some leftovers from yesterday’s Zaca Mesa Z Cuvee 2004. Nice little cherry bomb. Then a shot of Grand Marnier in my Riedel Vinum Bordeaux glass. Want to talk about legs? Put some GM in your wine glass. Silky heat.

Great one, Gary. You wanted comments, you got comments!

QOTD: No wine for me tonight. Scotch! Tasty tasty Scotch! 19 year Macallan to be exact. Smoke, caramel, a little oak, a little bit of peat (but not much), and something akin to espresso-coated violets. The last one is a little weird I know, but it’s late and that’s what I’m tasting. Good good stuff. Not my Johnny Walker Blue… but I can’t pour that out on a Tuesday night. :-)

Wow! Nice big glass tonight — it’s pretty much as big as your head! I’m impressed.

Wouldn’t it be cool if you could have it make your forehead super big when you smell the wine, like when we were kids in those carnival fun house mirrors? Does Chris know CGI? That would be sooo cool!

Anyway, since we’re doing visuals here, the shirt looked pink/light blue/purple tonight, although I’m sure it’s white. That’s great for SF, but Jersey?

Wow- Looks like you win the bet with that co-worker at WL, Big G! Congrats- the mass e-mail was clever. Also, geat Ep. as always and I was waiting to hear about Bordeaux.
QUESTION FOR BIG G: (as if you’ll even be able to read this among all the others) What 2005 Bordeaux would you recommend for the under $20 range? (possibly something that I can find around Boston because MA won’t let WL deliver!) I’ve seen a couple at my local wine shop, but I don’t want to be fooled by the 2005 sticker and buy something that just isn’t wrth the money.

QOTD: Opened the Concannon Petite Sirah last night with a pork chop and some polenta…will have the leftovers of that bottle with some lamb sausage tonite. That wine really rollercoastered (in a good way) over the evening. It was best after 2 hrs of being in a glass. I bet its gonna be all cassis flavors at this point and not as exciting.

Late, but probably not last. Good episode Gary. Thanks for, once again, sharing “wish list” wines with us. I lean much more toward New World wine, so I think it would do me some good to really explore some mid-range to straight old world wines to appreciate the breadth of the flavor profiles available.

QOTD: Nino Franco Rustico Prosecco (Library Code: 65860) I made curry chicken with chickpeas and potatoes. It was a great match.

How can you not love an episode about Bordeaux? Glad to see the comments pouring in.

QOTD: Not sure what I will be drinking this evening. It will be a gametime decision.

BTW GV, I don’t think your Jets have a prayer in the Thanksgiving game. I see Demarcus Ware putting a hurting on Pennington and at least two Romo to TO Td’s.

Fast approaching 500… Get there. I haven’t had a chance to watch many WLTV episodes in the last month :( but I plan on catching up. QOTD: Water. I gotta detox from the weekend!

QOTD-I had a couple of backfin ales to take the edge off the unseasonal heat but then broke down and popped a bottle of Clos du Bourg I beleive it is a Fronsac. Strange, it doesn’t really say. It drinks much better than it’s price and tastes like Provencale Bordeaux blend. I may have to open one of my ‘03 Bernadotte’s tonight. I beleive some portion of the vinyard is actually in Pauillac or at least adjacent to ch. Latour. Nes pas?

Will add my $0.02. Whah? What was the sudden mind meld into the Thanksgiving Cowboys Jets game that is 8 months away about? Enjoyer the review of Bordeaux so far. I have Brane-Cantenac back to 1986 cellared and did buy the 1996 but 2001 was my last cellar date for Bordeaux because of the time frame to drink them. I’m still pulling 1982 on the ones I still have and am just starting to try 1994 and 1996. $185 is never a value wine unless you were actually planning to buy it when it reached $400 in two years then I guess it would be a value.
Right now beginning to drink spring whites, Chenin from Loire and some Viognier from US and France. I noticed a question about wines for summer. My favorites are the Tavel Roses from France. Always a good sipper. Chenins too.

dirty sweaty socks. fungus, cellar floor. mustiness. Bordeaux.

I am glad the world is chasing these attributes as I am finding the wines I love easier than ever. (hint; not Bordeaux).

The Pavie family are so against the Bordeaux grain. The guy has California and American consumers on his mind.

QOTD- Last night I drank Braut & Sistra Cab Sonoma 2002.

I am still in the first yers of drinking wine but am turned off just by the description of those Bordeaux wines. I tried the Chateau Cantelys that you raved about and thought it smelled like garbage and dirty feet. Maybe that was what they were going for but I thought it was gross. This might be a region that I need to stay away from which might be better for my wallet in the long run. Any that you could suggest that are a good blend between California and Bordeaux?

Just tried the 2000 Chat La Vieille Cure Fronsac along with a 2003 Châteauneuf du Pape Clos du Mont Olivet “Cuvee des Papet” last night. Both were a little fruity with soft tannins and low acidity. The Chateauneuf of course had a more layered herbal nose, but for almost half the price, the Vieille Cure was pretty good!
