   Nice show Gary. I know a lot of us have been looking for an episode on kosher wines. I was pleasantly surprised to learn about the variety of kosher wines available. So often I have identified kosher wines with sweet, soda-like wine packaged in small bottles.

   QOTD: I, honestly, don’t have any real unusual tasting terms.

   QOTD: Someone got there before me, but it’s Asparagus Pee, TOTALLY. Sometimes with Chardonnay or SauvBlanc it dominates completely. I wondered if it was a fault. I’ve never heard anyone experienced mention it, so I’ve shied away from pointing it out in wine tasting classes. I will now.

   QOTD: Any citrus notes ring true to me. The reason is I am in the citrus industry and there is such a thing as a rotten grapefruit smell in wine.

   Okay… QOTD: “Brainerd Mayor George Bedard’s crab apple tree.” I tasted a wine last week that tasted like the crab apples that I “borrowed” from the mayor’s tree.

   Hi Gary,
   Interesting one, this time. QOTD: My favourite “private” tasting note is “asparagus-pee” – it’s that smell you get when you take a pee after you’ve eaten asparagus, which is really intense sometimes. I’ve only had it once so far, but it was really obvious on a 1999 Chardonnay from Langhe, Piedmont: the Bussiador by Poderi Aldo Conterno.

    QOTD: Holy crap, GV, GREAT QUESTION!!! I think the smell that comes up most often is “dingy old cave”, which is predominantly rat piss (but also dirt, liken, and feces). I spent my summers on a large ranch when I was a kid, and one of my favorite places to go when I was near the mountains was a cave that overlooked the whole valley. I also never fail to notice “wet sagebrush” when it’s present. It’s one of my favorite smells in the world. But I feel like neither or those examples are personal enough to answer the question. …an old girlfriend of mine had the best-smelling hair I’ve ever had the pleasure of burying my nose in, but I admit that I’ve never found a wine with the same aroma. Ah, I know! There was an old barn on the ranch, and in this barn was a room filled to the ceiling with salt-licks and mineral supplements for the cattle. I used to climb the stack and sit on top of it. I loved to watch the birds fly in and out of the windows, and listen for the rustling of rats beneath me. The place was FILLED with a pleasant stench that was entirely its own. Recently, I was reminded of those days by the 2003 Cantado Aglionico. That fantastic juice tasted, in the mid-palate, a bit like the smell of that old salt room. Thanks for turning me on to this one, G-man!

    I ordered a bottle of the Baron herzog cabernet jeunesse. I think it’s a great idea to have a wine from that day’s WLTV episode on free.winelibrary.com. Not every day, but every now and then. I know that enticed me to buy it.

    Gary, thanks for the capsule education on kosher wine. Whenever I thought of kosher wine, Manischewitz came to mind. My mother (age 87) likes sweet wines. Ever since I can remember, and I’m pushing 60, we’ve always had a ‘peasant’ Christmas Eve dinner that consisted of pea soup, smoked fish, pierogies with sauteed onions, potato pancakes with sour cream or apple sauce, lima beans, and a bottle of Manischewitz Concord Grape wine. Don’t ask me how this meal originated because I don’t have a clue and as you can surmise, we’re not Jewish. Maybe I’ll put a bottle of Baron Herzog Cabernet Jeunesse on the table this year and see what happens.
    PS: Your episodes are terrific.

    Gary, thanks for today’s show–a real eye-opener. I’ve celebrated passover with jewish friends before, and now I know some wines I can bring with … and perhaps even a few I can drink at home when it’s not passover.

    QOTD: This isn’t that personal, but one that always sticks with me is “violets, like that Sanford Pinot Noir.” It was the first wine I ever tasted that really stuck with me, and made an impression, back in ‘92.

    QOTD: THANK YOU for asking this because all I could think of was you when I first had this tasting note.
    2005 McMannis Cabernet: there is a little manufactured, chemical smell on the nose of this wine that I finally pinned as FINGER PAINTS that I used to play with when I was in pre-school. Wierd, but it’s deffinitely there.

    QOTD: First NZ SB in the 70’s smelled like Horse Piss…then one First Growth at a fancy wine tasting dinner reminded me of the odor of Gelatin Capsules that were/are used by pharmacies/consumers to contain powdered medicines. Being a nurse – a first impression that no one else understood??? could have been a wine clarified with gelatin…and at a Passover Seder, when the Sosnick Kosher Concord wine was opened, poured into miniature glasses, everybody tossed the liquid quickly down and yelled “la Chaim”. My 4 year old daughter stood up with hands on hips and very indignantly stated: “Don’t you know you’re supposed to smell it first?”
    Thanks for the freebie and expanding our wine world.

    The pizza scratch and sniff smelled great, now I need to find a wine that smells like a pizza scratch and sniff. Great show as usual!

    I’m a regular customer for Baron Herzog. I like the Cab Sauvignon, but it’s their Zinfandel what I like the best. Price in Panama is about a buck or two more, but the Zin costs about two bucks less than the Cab. Very respectable bottle of wine. Pleasant and very well balanced, very mature and under control.

    QOTD: Dirty Baby Diapers. This is what I get from most of the wines of Alsace. That’s why I avoid them. I have just the person for that semi-sweet Cab. I have been using A Virginia wine- Rivanna Sunset by Burnley Vinyards to introduce my wine novices to reds with some sweetness. I get a thumbs up every time. Please try it. Jerry the 2THDR

    QOTD: Don’t have one yet…developing…

    GV – do you realize that you use the flavor profile “cherry” in the vast majority of the wines you taste? It most often appears as “sour cherry” but “black cherry” sneaks in there also.
