Yanking the foil off is the only thing I ever learned on WLTV. That came early on — I’m thinking the first 10 episodes or so when Gary used to open the wines on camera.

    Hey Gary!
Fun episode. Ok, so what am I doing this weekend….well my family is looking to change up the face of our wine shop, so i’m looking into the costs of new wooden racks, the costs of re-tiling the bathroom, the costs of making a mini wine cellar for vintage wines (VERY Small), creating a new layout for the shop, and designing a new layout for our displays….yea…sounds like fun. I’m also working Saturday Night and Sunday. However, I’m going to dinner with my parents tonight and I’m going to find time to read the new Wine Enthusiast and catch up on my sleep.

    Gary:

thanks for tasting a 1995 Classed Bordeaux. Wine Spectator has suggested that ’95s are drinking well now (while ’96s are “drink now” – peaked). In your opinion how much life is left in the Ferriere? Is it at peak yet?

I would like to believe that Classed growth Bordeaux’s still have cellaring potential (in an age where few wines do).

    thanks
    Joe

GV – WTF???? You asked us to give you 350 comments for episode 203. The Vayniacs rocked it and delivered 547 to date. Not a word about it from you? WTF???

QOTD: To graduate law school I have to write a 35-50 page research paper. The topic: The Battle between James Madison and Alexander Hamilton in establishing the first bank of the United States. In case you’re curious or didn’t know – Hamilton wins the battle and President Washington signed the bank bill creating the first national bank of the US in 1791. I’m on page 11…24 to go.

You know what Gary, you should start a list of pretentious, hoity-toity wine myths, and then categorically start to debunk them and write the conclusions down. You know, just go Martin Luther style and write a “95 Theses” for the wine reformation. And I’m not just talking about things like “cork” vs. “screw top”, or “cut a circle in the foil” vs “yank the whole thing off”. Your comments yesterday about start of VdT Tuscans was really interesting. I’d love to hear more about that sort of stuff.

Comment #29 STEVO— I’m hearn’ buddy!… What did you win GV??? We haven’t heard D – - K about it and over 500 comments should have nearly doubled your winnings.
Like the new AVATAR???? huh? do ya?

  42. March 30, 2007

    Dave-from-Katonah

    Hey stevo – you’re right!

Hey Gary – why no shout out to all of us devoted ones who gave you exactly what you asked for?? A huge outpouring of Vayniac comments, well in excess of the 350 you asked for, deserves a little reciprocal love, don’t you think? G – you know we all love you, man. stevo is right, but I wouldn’t say WTF…

For those of us who watch the vlogs regularly, it’s almost like a soap opera. We tune in to see what happens next. Each episode feeds on the previous ones. So stevo is right, in a way… 547 comments should not go unrecognized.

I gotta go open a Bordeaux. Try to pull off the foil… Have a nice weekend everybody!

QOD, going to Morimoto tonight. Can you say UNI? Sure you can. Tomorrow thru Monday preparing for passover seder. Sue cooks, I’ll clean. BTW, passover is the only holiday that I know of where drinking at least four glasses of wine is part of the religious text (haggadah). :)

A bullfrog’s beating heart? You got me thinking of two scenes in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

    1) “Ah, dessert! Chilled monkey brains.”
    2) The “heart-ripping” ceremony.

    Great friday!
    Happy birthday Susan!
QOTD:I´m going to Maracanã Stadium (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) to see the great Botafogo against the dirty Vasco (soccer, does any one like soccer? I know it´s not a favourite sport in US). Probably Romario, the great brazilian player, will make his 1000 goal. Let´s see.

QTOD – remaking some vacation plans. Was going to Indianapolis for big car show in June where you can drive your car on the big track. Shivers down the spine time. But work intervenes -must go to Lake Como Italy(not so bad). Now planning hot rod car show for Syracuse NY mid July which coincides With Watkins Glen Finger Lakes Wine Fest. 80 wineries. etc. However I loathe sweet wines. Can we prevail upon the grand Vaynerchuk to identify which wineries produce “decent” not sweet juice?

  54. March 30, 2007

    Michael Goldberg

Why to cut the foil: Because if you don’t cut it and rip the cork out forcibly, then a piece of tin might find its way into your wine. When you pour the wine, the piece finds itself in your glass! And then drink the wine, you taste it and chew it. Have you ever chewed on tin foil? It’s awful. Ruins the wine. And that’s just no good.

QofD: I am in the Law School Library finishing my Paper and NJ Bar Application. All weekend long.

  55. March 30, 2007

    TagWorld Brian

QOTD: Watching my Bruins (hopefully) chomp a gator tomorrow.

Nice mellow ep. today. Waiting to see Ciocco sit in for a session, on the WLTV tasting couch.

  56. March 30, 2007

The wrist bands sliding all over the place…very funny! Maybe you should make golf club covers out of them. They’d be on courses all over the country!

QOD: Lawn work, play some corn hole w/ the fam, listen to rock & roll on the deck, burn some burgers, drink some vino and most definitely, absolutely, positively watch the FINAL FOUR..gO bUCKS!!!!!!!
Just for the heck of it, I was checking out my brackets @ the WL group site…I went to the last page and couldn’t find myself. I kept searching from back to front and finally found me on page 1 and in the top ten. Blew me away. Enjoy the weekend, all.

Great ep as usual, Gary! Can’t wait for the thousands more to come. :)

QOTD: tonight, I’m being lazy. Will probably open a bottle of something, but haven’t decided what yet. The rest of the weekend is going to be busy. Have to help my daughter shop for a prom dress — there goes the wine budget for the next couple of months! Yard work, boring stuff like that. Sunday, put some stuff up for sale on eBay.

    Have a great weekend, Vayniacs!

Uni is the best so smooth and sweet! You should have it at the wine library with the wine tasting oh OK put it downstairs with the cheeses oh just add an addition just for wonderful foods!
Funny I was going to use my wrist band as a drip catcher on the wine bottles but I like your idea better. Please add a bunch more to my shipment
Oh and fro removing the foil I just screw right through them. I always get yelled at for that! BUT I still do it. But find myself pulling it off more often.
Oh as for the wrist band and you on the couch.
You should have taped a bunch to yourself so you didn`t have to so obviously prop them back on your crouch!
They did look like condoms. Can I say that?
As for the weekend is my busy time so I`m working!!!!!!!!

I will be spoiling a sick husband, missing the Passport to Woodinville (darn!), and hoping to find a TV station that is actually playing the final game of the women’s NIT basketball tourney. Maybe I’ll even be able to see shots of my parents when they scan the crowd (mom and dad have been going 3 hours early to secure the best seats in the house). My hometown team, the actual COWGIRLS (see WLTV episode #203) will be playing in front of a sold-out crowd in Laramie, Wyoming. This is amazing for a few reasons, not the least of which is that the tickets sold out in just a few hours. . . in spite of a blizzard that snowed in the entire region.

C’mon, cheer for the underdog — a group of gals playing college ball in the least populated state in the country. Go Wyo!

QOTD: FLying back to SF tomorrow after visiting my family in ct. It was my Dad’s birthday and he was recovering from a pretty major operation to remove cancerous growth inside his mouth. Amazingly they got it all and at the moment he’s all clear thank god! On sunday it’s my girlfriends b-day and I’m gonna do my best to cheer her up as her dog is dying of cancer. It’s been a crazy month. As Gary says it’s all about friends and family.

I loved watching the wristbands slide off the leather couch! And no, that is not what i’ll be doing this weekend. On Saturday, a surprise B-day party at a home where good wine will be found AND on Sunday another surprise B-day Party at a local restaurant. Not sure of the beverage selections there. So this will be a first with back-to-back surprise fiestas!
Gary, i’m leaving for Argentina on April 12 for 2 weeks and was wondering if you have been there, and if so, other than eating the outrageous beef and consuming copious amounts of Malbec, what else should I be doing? Any suggestions from the Vaniac Nation would be appreciated. Muchas Gracias.

I started my weekend right – cut out of work early and went to WL! Bought some decent stuff, too! I hope I don’t drink it all this weekend though.

ps I had a Gary sighting but he looked busy and I got that feeling like that time I saw Julia Roberts in line at a movie theatre and after weighing options a) stalking her or b) letting her buy her popcorn in peace, I chose b.

Enjoyed the episode. QOTD – eating all the junk food in the house, paired with a cheap red, and taking in the final four. With a sushi din on the line, i’ll be pulling for the gators(who I actually loathe)to take it all. Pulling for the hoyas (who I also loathe) in other bracket to pad my point total. Just to keep the record clean, I also loathe the bruins and buckeyes. So, I will enjoy sat and mon sittin, munchin and sippin in front of the screen, loathing 4 teams shootin’ some hoops – good times, good times.

Just hanging out with my kids playing some ping pong (son 11, daughter 9). Also some yard work. Watching some hockey, and of course drinking some good wine. I am dying to try a 1993 Erbacher Schlossberg Riesling Auslese by Schloss Reinhartshausen (Rheingau) on Saturday night. Cooking up some salmon on the BBQ (both my kids love salmon, even more then a great steak). Sunday, we will take out a lunch and hike the trails behind my house to see where they go. Its always a good weekend when I have the kids.

    Gary,
Great Friday episode, Friday being the day I can enjoy WLTV with a glass of wine( a 2004 Malbec)
QOTD- Taxes! and then the monthly dinner. Each month we get together with two other couples for a dinner. We take turns hosting and entree while the two visting couples bring appetizer and dessert. We are dessert this month. My wife is making Tres Leches and I have picked out an Australian Shiraz to bring along. It is always alot of fun and we kill about 4 bottles of wine in the process.

QOTD: Well. I started off my friday with a couple glasses of the Segal Cab which was delivered today. Man oh Manischewitz, a really nice wine.

Tomorrow, a few errands like Starbucks in the morning, shopping at Harris-Teeter and then the wife and my mother-in-law will be celebrating our Seder dinner at a nice restaurant overlooking Sugarloaf Mtn. (It’s hard to get the family together on a Monday)

I, too, will also be drafting two espn fantasy ML teams and, of course, watching some B-ball whenever I can.

    Have a great weekend.

    Cheers!

P.S. Good call on the Segal Cab.

Question for you (or anyone): what color is tempranillo when it’s made into a varietal wine? I bought a bottle because I’ve never had just Tempranillo before, and it looks like a spritzer it’s so light! The label says to ’serve chiled.’ Is this some sort of fufu drink masquerading as wine? I didn’t spend that much $ on it, so perhaps I deserve it. . .

Gary, you are amazing for going back through Ask WLTV and answering some lingering questions. I’m sure you have tons of email and WLTV comments to read through, so kudos to you for your efforts. And in the process, you’ve given us new catch phrases! By the way, I agree with you about over-oak flavors even in my very limited wine experience.

QOTD: basketball, church, catching up on sleep

oh yeah about the foil….I have found that there is a practical use for leaving the foil on. when you grip it while screwing in the cork screw it makes it easier cuz the foil is loose and spins around the bottle while your grip stays in place. It’s easier than having to regrip the neck as you go. Just a thought.

Gary…I always appreciate you taking questions. This time, though, I couldn’t decide whether you were clowning me or not. I started my question because of the issue you addressed in Episode 162 about wine labels. You said, in that episode or another one, that you wanted to debunk the myth that a great label indicates good wine. I was just following along with that. Secondly, were you serious about Lebanese wine labels or were you just yanking my chain?

Thanks for the reinforcements for those of use who pull the foil off the bottle.

Thanks for reviewing the 1995 Chat Ferriere. I’ve been looking to purchase a bottle of 1995. My son was born in ‘95, and I want to buy a good bottle to reserve for his 21st birthday. Would the Chat Ferriere hold up? (He’s 12 this year.) Any other suggestions for a 1995 vintage? — maybe a Champagne/sparkling?

QOTD: Friday night I hung out with a buddy of mine that just moved to the city and got a phat job at a pharmaceutical company new Summitt Hills. I recommended he come by and see you. The rest of the weekend is going to be fulled with yard work and NCAA tourament viewing. My wife is out of town for a couple of weeks, so I want to surprise her with some nice spring curb appeal when she gets back.

Very good EP. Happy birthday to Vayniac Susan (two days late). Love your alternate use of the Vayniac wristband Gary – it also works for catching the runs down the bottle so the label stays intact for us label junkies! Loved your comments on the foil. The foil cutter is one of those devices that has sat eternally un-used in my kitchen drawer. Foil “rippers” UNITE! QOTD: Looking in my schedule for the opportunity to pick up my order from WL! Hmmm… Question for you, G… Were you in a fraternity in college? Watching this episode, I just had an epiphany. I had always thought that fraternities were a big, idiotic waste of time, and an excuse for stupid jocks to get wasted as often as possible. But I just realized something! The hazing rituals do serve one very important, educational purpose… They prepare people for some of the freakish, absolutely disgusting, ‘delicacies’ that society has to offer out in the ‘big boy’ world! Some examples: Caviar (fish eggs), Escargot (snails), Uni (sea urchin), and what??? A bullfrog’s beating heart with chopsticks??? Crimeny!!! That’s a new one on me!!! *shudder* What the heck is wrong with you people???

Friday: Changed the wine world a little bit by hosting Wine Night with friends and serving the four Rieslings you featured a month or two ago. Paired with good Chinese. Great stuff.

Saturday: Worked out, attended U of Texas spring football game, went to friend’s three year old’s birthday party which was mostly watching basketball and playing washers, saw The Bottle Rockets (great Missouri rock band).

Sunday: Slept in, shopped for lawnmower, watched this episode.

As a half-Japanese American living in Japan I was psyched to hear Gary mention his love for the uni. Uni (sea urchin) rocks the house. If seafood/sushi ain’t your thing cool, but if you’re a sushi fiend and you haven’t had uni then you’re missing out. It’s not for all, but that leaves more for the rest of us. Just the word is funky awesome… uni uni uni.

    Gary
Uni is great, beating hearts hmmm but am willing to try it. I’m Hawaiian – so if its slower than me, I’ll usually eat it! My local sushi chef treated me to sea slug and eel. I paired that with a nice guvertz. What a match, but I wonder if a pinot blanc would have been more stupendous. I always rip the foil off and not ashamed to do it.

Working saturday and playing golf Sunday and yardwork. Nothing exciting. The oak monster lives at my house and I keep trying to kick him out but my wife drags him in by the heels and perches him at the dinner table. Can this thing be killed?

Gary, have you seen the show on the travel channel where the guy goes all around the world eating wierd stuff? What wine would you drink with grubs? suspect a Sancerre but that would just be my preference. Actually am not a fan of Uni, tastes like slimy coffee to me.

One thing that would be interesting would be to film you doing tastings for the store when you decide what wines to carry. Talk about thousands of wine! And in that vein, when are you going to show your Bordeaux footage?

  141. April 2, 2007

Whenever possible now I pull the foil right off the bottle.

QOTD: This weekend I consumed far too much wine with my wife and neighbors on Friday night, Saturday the same neighbor and I traded off helping one another with some house jobs, then Sunday had a family dinner (where I brought the wine) with my wife’s family for Passover. Next weekend its my family for Easter and I supply with the wine for that one too :)

GV, Thank you for offering and reviewing the 95 Ferriere. I have read about good things about this wine but it has very limited availablity in the USA. I beleive the greedy ‘Roast Beefs’ drink them all. As usual you also have a great price so I’m looking forward to my order.
My female dog likes to steal the corks of the bottles I’m drinking and chomp them down. You should see one of those once they’re uncork’d at the other end. Not to worry I won’t send you any pictures.
I’m a Bartender and I always pull the foil sleeves off wine bottles except the heavy foil ones you can cut your hand up pretty bad trying to force one of them off. How can I request some wristbands with my wine orders? Cheers.

Great show. Just saw it. What if the wine starts out smelling bad but tastes ok? And you are right..there are thousands of shows left to do so get busy!!! This weekend I spent delivering the paintings I sold last weekend. I sold out the show…38 originals in all. The proceeds go towards my parents memorial fund which provides scholarships to kids at my old parish school. Poor neighborhood but a good Catholic school. I paint to relax from doing surgery during the day. Keep up the great work.

QOTD: long time watcher, first post with a late answer: I go skiing on the weekends, I’m swiss and live near the snow capped alps, great sport, good to be outdoors, and the snow conditions this spring are way better than at the beginning of the winter. one more week of snow skiing and the winter season ends.
thank you for all your shows and episodes. fun to watch and very educating. not only in wine knowledge, but also you are a great english professors for us foreigners to learn an even better english.
i like a lot of your episodes. i want to mention one: the german rieslings. what i liked so much is the low alcohol content. less than 10%! low alcoholic wines is the future(or is it: low alcoholic wines are the future?) the germans should promote it a lot more, especially among the women.

QOTD: what did I do that weekend? Went on a weekend stay with my fanfare band (rehearsal weekend) and played two concerts on Sunday. Not really a fanfare/brassband lke you might know. It’s something typical of Netherlands and Flanders, resembles a British Brass Band, but were twice as large and have different instruments (only brass and saxophones). Were not marching, but more of an orchestra. Just have look at our site: http://www.kfwerkmanszonen.be/ .

    I still want a wristband (or 2)1!!!

Gary you should do an episode about bad wines!! I can give you a few names. Little Penguin White Shiraz (tastes like over fermented grape fanta and a really bad vodka cramberry!); Jepson Chardonnay from CA (tastes like day old popcorn, green ale, beer, brandy and apple cider together, truly awful and it smells like rancid butter!) Yuck!
