hmm… greatest head to head battle was a blind tasting two nights ago for cabs… first place and last place were the exact same bottle of wine…. (one had been decanted for an hour, the other not) The rest of the wines that scored in the middle had not been decanted either.

Nice H2H battle. I’m in the camp of Pine Ridge lovers though I have yet to try the ‘02 or ‘03. I usually drink my CA cabs (high-end i.e. Dom, Pine Ridge, Dunn, Insignia) when they are a little older.

QOTD: Greatest battle? It has to be Borg vs McEnroe. Though I’m a huge Connors fan, the matches with Borg/McEnroe were classics.

Enjoy the game. I go tomorrow to watch my beloved Nationals get spanked.

    Play ball!

    Eric S.

wow, that was scary. When you asked the QOD, the first thing that popped in my mind was Wrestlemania and the Andre/Hogan bout. That was frickin’ awesome! AND, I had moss man and all of the he-man action figures. If I still had him, I’d send it.

Oh, and by the way…..TIES SUCK!! Thanks…

Love P.R. wines – I am a member of the wine club and get the Howell Mtn as well – the shipping is killing me though.

QOTD: Not exactly head to head, but the ‘97 Gators vs. Seminoles game was the best college football game ever. As for pure head to head competition, Tiger Woods vs. Steve Scott in the U.S. Amateur.

  42. April 2, 2007

    RandyB

BobW called it, the Thrilla in Manilla. Not counting the 1988 Olympics, how about Ben Johnson vs. Carl Lewis? Borg vs. McEnroe…yeah. Who can forget Bird vs. Johnson from their epic college meeting throughout their pro careers, that was always pure Magic.

    Ciao

  43. April 2, 2007

Pine Ridge is a great winery. I love Stag’s Leap wines – generally more Cherries, black fruit, currant, chocolate with silky tannins and a smooth finish. Could be the 2002 SLD needs more time to integrate the tannins. A tie? It could be one of those mood things: Opening day, feeling good and loving life. No matter, Oakville wines are great as well. Both solid wines.

QOTD: Steven Stills vs Neil Young guitar solos.

    Go Giants! (SF)

    Corrado

Greatest head-to-head? Any of the Gatti/Ward fights (heck, just about ANY Gatti fight).

Can’t deny the 2000 Jets/Dolphins MNF game a ‘tie’ for first place in the ‘greatest head-to-head’ category though. Touchdown to Jumbo Elliot? You can’t make that stuff up!

  47. April 2, 2007

    JimVarney01

Greatest head to head battle I’ve ever seen was OH Sang Eun of Korea defeated his fellow countryman LEE Jung Woo in the 2005 US Open of Table Tennis….

Seriously… best match by far was Wrestlemania III when Hulkamania body slammed Andre the Giant. It was AWESOME sittin 18th row for this event at the Pontiac Silverdome. Great, Great, Great match. I know you know what I’m talkin about Gary!!! Hulkster was in the ring for like 20 minutes flexing after the pin! Can I repeat AWESOME!!!!

    See ya in Chicago!!!

  48. April 2, 2007

    cgf

QOD: I was at Gatti/Ward III where Gatti broke his hand and still won. Great call Corrado! That fight was sick.

Cool episode today Gary. It was fresh and a little outside of the box. I know you were short on time, but it would have been a great opportunity to talk about how stags leap and oakville are different, and how that was reflected in the wines. Or how 2002 and 2003 are different. I guess you kind of let the wines speak for themselves, though, which was cool. Have fun at opening day! Go yanks.

Am I commenting a day in advance? Friday I cited the 1995 Sampras v. Agassi US Open Final.

Too bad I was born in 1979 and couldn’t appreciate the 1980 Borg v. McEnroe. I’ll have to check ESPN Classic.

QOTD: Without a doubt the best head to head I’ve ever been a part of was a 2001 Hanzell Chardonnay and a 2003 Domaine Serene Cote Sud Chardonnay. In a group of 8 it was a complete split and a close call for many of us. Amazing wines…I’m still thinking the Domaine Serene won simply for QPR though….and Oregon wines just plain rock.

  58. April 2, 2007

    GV,
Never had a Pine Ridge. There are so many good wines out there, hard to taste them all. Unless you own an wine store and get to do it for TV!!! QOTD: Ali: Frazier 1 in the Garden. An absolute classic. # 2 would be the Ali Foreman Rope a dope stunner.

    Nice Episode Gary.
QOTD – Well this has got to a two pronger…..best head to head match I have seen has got to be Jordan vs. Bird in that horse game that was on TV about 10 years ago. Those guys are crazey. Best head to head ever is us playing a little one on one…but I know it will never happen cause you fear me Gary! YOu fear my outside three, my tear drop, my hook, my Kevin McHale up and under. To be honest, I don’t blame you.

2006 NCAA Football Championship Game. I go to Florida, so for me that was the single best football game I have ever seen. For us to show all the doubters how good of a team we are, and how crappy and overrated the “unbeatable” OSU team was; that was awesome. And, come to think of it, there is a certain basketball game on tonight…featuring the same two teams…and I believe we are going to show who dominates in all sports.

    Go Gators!!!!

  69. April 2, 2007

    Lars

Tie??? There are not ties in baseball!!!

QOTD: 1980 Olympics, Hockey Semi-Final. USA vs. USSR. “Do you believe in miracles? Yes!”

Is it just me, or did the demise of the Soviet Union and US pro athletics destroy the Olympics? I’m sure our Belorussian Wine Guy is personally happy with the communist’s demise, but it really made the Olympics less dramatic. Ah yes…yearning for the return of the cold war and riviting Olympic Games…

  70. April 2, 2007

Yet another classic, Gary. :) I’ll never look at a juice box the same again.

    More on the QOTD:
I think Tennis probably has some of the most compelling H2H matches.
Australian Open: 2003 Qtr’s Roddick v El Aynaoui (Roddick won: 4-6, 7-6, 4-6, 6-4, 21-19 and I was VERY tired going to work on 3h sleep)
    Australian Open: 2006 Semi’s Baghdatis v Nalbandian (Baghdatis won: 3-6, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4)

You reminded me of my uncle. He always compared football to ballet – the choreography of the plays, the graceful moves of the players. I’d never heard that before or since – until today when you mentioned both in the same sentence.

    QOTD –
Most recent/famous: Paul McCartney vs. Heather Mills — you know, the dancer?

Most expensive settlement: Rupert & Anna Murdoch — $1.7 billion. Lucky Anna!

Even though I can’t afford today’s competitors, at least I could enjoy the commentary. Thank you for a quality, if brief, EP, BIG G.

QOTD: Andre-Hogan is deffinitely tough to beat, so I won’t try to. BUT another good H2H was Inigo Montoya vs. The Man in Black in The Princess Bride (1987).

GV, Since tonight was the NCAA final I have to say 1985 Georgetown vs Villanova was as good as it gets when Villanova shot 22 for 26 and won 66-64 beating a team they lost to twice in conference. The first 10 minutes of the game was unbelievable and Georgetown’s poor sportsmanship at the end made me dislike them to this day. Also the 1984 McEnroe-Lendl French Open final was an incredible display of serve and volley tennis on a surface that no one save McEnroe would have attempted, unfortunatly after playing flawlessly for two sets he fell apart and lost three straight, even he has said this was his biggest dissapointment.

  95. April 3, 2007

QOTD: Anatoly Karpov vs Garry Kasparov. “The Brisbane Bombshell”
    World Championship Match 1985.

  96. April 3, 2007

Pine ridge is always a nice glass. Just at $50 (bones) it is a bit too pricey. Should be in the under $30 range with their regular bottling coming in at $19 (bones).
But then, we live in a world where Caymus regular is $70 bones. Nice wine if you can find it for $25-$30.
    but then I ramble.

  97. April 3, 2007

See you later man…gotta get back to work.
    GO BEARS!!!

Like the Pine Ridge Chardonnay quite a bit for its underoaked under malolactic tastes. Have only had the Stag’s Leap Cab and felt that while good, it was overpriced but that is the way of Napa Valley.

Best head to head was both Ali/Frazier fights though Sugar Ray Leonard and the no mas guy was great for me as well.

Magic vs Bird, Hands down the best matchup.

    Like 'em Rounded and Aged

I’ve been to Pine Ridge many times and purchased their wines once in a while. The Andrus and Epitome (in the years they do the Epitome) are generally better than their single vineyard wines, but the problem with all Pine Ridge wines (like Schweiger’s wines) is that they simply are not built to last. These wines can give you the false impression that they have the structure to last 10+ years, but I have yet to have one that actually has. Even in strong years like 1995 and 1997, the fruit was falling off in dramatic fashion within 5 to 6 years. If you can find a Pine Ridge that is more than 10 years old and still drinking well, it is the extreme exception and such lack of ageworthiness across the entire winery, in my book, always means a low 90’s point wine is never worth $50 to $100.

Best head to head dual was Brian Goodell and Bobby Hacket in the 1976 Olympics 1500 freestyle when they went gold – silver and shattered the world record.

BV, re comment 84. I remember when Marcus Allen took ballet lessons to improve his grace and balance. I thought a lot of players went through that, at one point. Maybe in the ’80s. It was a coaching fad, or something.

Anna Nicole wasn’t so lucky, I guess. But her spawn yet may be (at least, moneywise).

    Hey Gary,

is that a Boston Red Sox or Brooklyn Dodgers hat?

The Pine Ridge story also has a divorce in it where the husband took his settlement and went to Washington State to start his own winery, so his wife now runs Pine Ridge alone. I like Pine Ridge for their unique varietals. They put out a pure Malbec one year that was insanely good, and even now they have a good Viognier/Chenin Blanc combo – try to find Chenin Blanc in the Napa area!

The difference in flavor seems to be traceable to the hillside slopes of Stag’s Leap versus the valley floor vineyards of Oakville.

QOTD – The South Park Barbara Streisand episode:

As Streisand goes about destroying the town….when Sidney Poitier arrives in the form of a giant turtle much like Gamera. He is no match for Mecha-Streisand, and South Park appears in utter peril until Robert Smith of The Cure comes and morphs into a giant moth, in the form of Mothra. Discovering that Mecha-Streisand’s weak spot is the nose, Smith is able to punch the Diamond of Pantheos out of her – using the Robert Punch, thus rendering her powerless; weakened, Smith is then able to mega-toss Mecha-Streisand into outer space, where she explodes.

Way to show a soccer sensibility Gary, with the tie — not every game has to be decided to be great. That having been said, I was sure, up until the last second, that you personally preferred the Oakville and were going to give it a one-point victory.

QOTD: Two answers (if you can do the tie, I can give two answers, right?):

Baseball: Yankees and Boston in ‘78, of course. The one-game playoff for rulership of the East.

Football: 1982 AFC Division Playoff, of course — Chargers vs. Miami (41-38).

Notice, btw, on opening day who won and who lost. let’s hope that continues.

The greatest head to head battle i ever witnessed was Phil Hellmuth and Johnny Chan heads up no-limit hold’em at the Bicycle Casino in Los Angeles 1989. I was the dealer. Before the flop Chan bet $50,000 (real money not a tournament). Phil thought about it for 20 minutes while i held the sweaty deck in my hand. After 20 minutes Hellmuth folded pocket kings. Chan showed pocket aces. What are the chances? How did he know? You are the best Gary V., don’t ever change!

QOD– Watson v. Nicklaus, Turnberry British Open Championship 1977. The first Open that I can remember seeing on TV, and still the best. Watson beat Jack by shooting 66-65 the final two rounds to Nicklaus’s 66-66, on a damned hard course, playing together for those final two rounds. I forget the 3rd place finisher, but I think he was 7 or 8 strokes back of those two. Notable also in that it inspired one of the best pieces of sports literature ever, the account written by Herbert Warren Wind for the New Yorker magazine.

The question of the day? NO QUESTION! The greatest head to head match up I can remember was Easy Goer vs. Sunday Silence for the 89 Triple Crown. It had it all. East coast vs. west coast, breeding vs. tenacity, style vs. power, and stride for stride, nose to nose, stretch run thrills. I think everyone that has ever competed in any sport can learn the meaning of “heart” watching those two horses duke it out in that series.

QOTD: I just saw the NCAA 2007 hockey final–Michigan State vs. Boston College. Best hockey game I’ve seen in a long time. And since hockey is the best sport there is, that’s my vote for best head-to-head.

Funny you should do this Pine Ridge tasting the same day I did a mini vertical of PR Rutherford ‘95, ‘96, and ‘97. No clear winner there, either, except those of us who were drinking!
