QOTD – I’d probably start with some foie gras since hopefully you’re bringing a sauterne, followed by a fresh pasta course before moving on to a standing rib roast, bone in of course with some potatoes and veggies as sides. For dessert individual molten chocolate cakes. I love cooking and this would be a great excuse to go all out.

Looking forward to meeting you and the other Vayniacs tonight.

So funny you mentioned the Veoh contest. Just stumbled across that yesterday. So far, only saw 4 videos up there, and 3 of them were … ahem…. eh.

Could I do better? Eh, probably not. :) But I’m mulling it.

I always thought it was rude to ask what was being served if one was invited over for a meal? That said….it most certainly wouldn’t be puppy poop and cat piss.

  26. April 5, 2007

    thkorent

Wow, that was a surprise to me: Di Majo @ 83 points? I have not had the 05, but the 04 that received the same Parker score was one of my all time favourite Sangioveses (that’s right, Chianti, Brunello, Montepulciano and all) and it was a crazy steal because I bought it directly from the producer in Campomarino (I think it was 3$ per bottle…). Well, I guess this is where palate variation comes into play – but now I have to buy the 05 as well to find out if it’s really that bad from my standpoint as well. Great show, Gary!
Btw: the Aglianico from Di Majo, that you scored 89 on a previous show, I found it to be a rather superficial effort in previous years – I’ve got to go out and figure what happened this year…

  27. April 5, 2007

WLTV, meet Muscadet. Muscadet, meet WLTV.

I had the same thought about the Di Majo Norante this weekend at our massive wine fundraiser … I’d had and loved it earlier, but this time it was dirty and uninspiring. Granted, this was the 04 and not the 05, but either there’s some hellacious bottle variation or this stuff doesn’t have a long lifespan?

Speaking of DMN, had the ‘02 Aglianico this past week and was surprised how tame it was. A little vegetal, not like other Aglianicos, but still almost elegant. I think I liked the Ramitello more, spoofulation and all.

QOTD: but you can’t, the house is a mess! There’s wine boxes all over the place!

  31. April 5, 2007

    organicguy

I there something wrong with East Coast oysters? I’ll take a half dozen Wellfleets with a nice crisp French Chablis anyday!!!! QOTD…we’ll have some prime beef from the grill and whatever we want to pick from the garden for sides….

  32. April 5, 2007

    aktormedic

Thanks for the Madeira. I really like these wines, especially the Broadbent Madeiras. The best thing is that you can keep them open for years and they never spoil! Should have mentioned that at the end maybe.

Also, Muscadet is a wine that for 5-8 bucks more you can get an OUTSTANDING bottle. Maybe we will see more of them on here soon? GOOOOOO Muscadet Sevre et Maine!!

  33. April 5, 2007

you should invite josh reynolds to come on the show! are you gonna do a madiera show sometime? i’d love that.

  34. April 5, 2007

    John Blue Label

QOTD:EASY; FESTA ITALIANO: for appetizer, sausage roll (hot sausage, sweet red peppers, grated parmesan and mozzarella) with 2001 Zenato Amarone. For insalata, Cesar. For Main course, my world famous eggplant parmigianno with the Galina Barbaresco. For dessert, flourless chocolate cake with BUSSOLA RECIOTO. And if you don’t think this is freakin awesome, you don’t know food or wine!!! hey Gary, forget about the contest, I’ll just make the dinner if you want to come down to NC to visit!!!

  35. April 5, 2007

    stevo

Really shocked at GV’s reaction to the Di Majo Sang! I had it two weeks ago and thought it was very good and a no brainer buy for the money (even if you didn’t have a brain, you would know to buy it). I think it’s right up there with the ‘03 Anglianico.

  36. April 5, 2007

    Formally Known as Big man

Gary im thinkin some wild Alaskan cedar plank salmon with a sun dried tomato cream sauce. Maybe spice it up a little. Then as a side some pasta and steamed asparagus. A simple avocado salad. For starters seared aahi tuna with a ponzu sauce. Ya sounds good huh. Maybe you should just give me the contest.

    First!

Okay, first time I’ve watched an episode on the day it was put out. That counts for something, right?

Since someone beat me to the pickles comment, I’d say Smokra the pickled smoked Okra simply because I like saying Smokra, but I probably can’t cause of some stupid employees can’t particpate thingy. So you keep you $1000 worth of wine I’m taking my ball and going home!!!!!

  41. April 5, 2007

    Jonathon M Chicago

QOTD: Steak au Poivre, Australian lobster tails, garlic mashed and baby veggies.

    And YOUR WINE! :_)

  42. April 5, 2007

    PattyO

Really good show today Gary! Thanks for the Madiera and the Muscadet. Two GREAT “secret value zones” in my opinion. Last summer, we bought a bunch of several different Muscadets, all in that $10 range, and took a bottle on every picnic we had (and we do LOTS of summer picnics!). I just think of it as “picnic wine” – and it’s getting to be that time of year again!
Interesting with the 2005 Di Majo Norante Sangiovese – we just recently drank a bottle we accidentally got from WL and we had the same opinion of it that you did, and we thought it was curious that our opinion was SO below the critic’s rating.
Finally – where’s my sherry episode?? You’re getting closer – sneaking in the Madiera – but come on. WL has a pretty nice offering in the category and I’d love to see you taste some of the UNRATED ones that WL sells.
Wish I were there so we could join the gathering tonight! Have fun and don’t fight over Gary’s white zin – I’m sure he’ll bring PLENTY for everyone, not just 1 bottle….
    Happy weekend everyone!

  43. April 5, 2007

    sfgiants55

These aren’t much of a value I guess. The Madeira could be fun though.

  44. April 5, 2007

    Dom

Madeira, a really, really nice varietal. One of TJ’s (Thomas Jefferson) favorites. I’ve actually had a glass of 1870 Blandy’s Madeira that was quite the treat.

QOTD: Good question though I would definitely start off with stuffed zucchini blossoms fried to a golden crisp (of course stuffed with cheese) and then something on the grille provided the weather cooperates. Since I’m a huge fan of Pinot Noir, I believe marinated salmon on the grille, a la Bobby Flay would do quite well.

    Cheers!

  45. April 5, 2007

Great episode! always apreciate a NZ sauvignon blanc in the line up. I really enjoyed the 05′ matua paretai, but lately been drinking the 06′ Drylands – marlborough… classic “cat piss”, tropical fruit, and even a hint of jalepeno pepper. mmmh! good stuff… I’ve also been wanting to try some madeira. With the Rainwater at 10$, now theres no excuse.

  46. April 5, 2007

    kingfunk

we’re going to start off with cat piss and poop, I hear it is a delicassy in some third world countries. Especially the poop from little puppies, its almost like veal. I love how you describe some tastes it is very entertaining.
If you want a better wine from Di majo Norante that wont break the bank try the Ramitello, its not sangiovese, it is prognolo and aglianico, and you can probably pay under 15 bones for it.

  47. April 5, 2007

    Jen

This Ultimate Vayniac Contest scares me to no end…. I think I have to try it. :) QOTD: WHEN I win, I will serve you and my eight buds: Double Double meals from In-N-Out Burger… so bring lots of big Cab’s!!

  48. April 5, 2007

    Jeremy

QTOD: Easy Gary, prepare for pan seared halibut with a shallot pesto sauce with white asparagus on a bed of arugala.

  49. April 5, 2007

QOTD: Grilled Maine Lobster – and anything out of my cellar that you want. The least I can do if you are going to come all this way …

  50. April 5, 2007

    Harley Stan

Interesting episode, I am always hoping to find a great cheap wine, lately I have been striking out so now I don’t feel to bad.
QOTD-Prime Rib! with mushrooms and onions, homemade horseraddish. For dessert, Tres Leches

  51. April 5, 2007

    CindyW

In addition to TJ, madeira was also a favorite of Jane Austin’s.

Loooooooove madeira, such a nice smooth treat. I’ll have to give this one a try.

(ahem, make that Jane AustEn — bad spelling fingers today)

  53. April 5, 2007

    Matt B DC

QOTD – If I won, I’d probably make pizza. Everything from scratch except milling the flour, milking the cow, and bringing the water from the well.

As free shipping goes and those wristbands, I just can’t take things for free. That, and I’m awful with a videocamera and making that pizza takes a LOT of time, man!!!!!

Thanks for another great episode. I love the value wines.

Like the Incredible Hulk taking a dump in a sandstorm,

  54. April 5, 2007

QOTD: A turkey sandwich. Give me a break, I’m a 23 year old bachelor; I can’t cook. Or maybe all this matza is just making me think of anything with bread right now.

  55. April 5, 2007

This grill master would be serving 8 oz lobster tails with 10 oz filet mignons, grilled asparagus marinated lightly with olive oil and herbs, and my wife’s famous grilled in foil red potatoes again lightly done in olive oil and vidalia onions… you may want to stop by even if I don’t enter a video, just bring a bottle to pop.

  58. April 5, 2007

    RPS

I concur with the numerous remarks above, this was another great episode. An excellent selection of different wines at affordable prices for those of us that are just getting our feet wet in the world of wine.

QOTD: Roasted rack of lamb with Malagueta pepper and Farofa crust.

  59. April 5, 2007

    JonE

QOTD: Porcini and Taleggio Pizzetta (ala ‘OTTO’, I hope you know what I mean G-Man.), caponata with grilled bread and extra capers, grilled NY strip au poivre with haricot verts and roasted mushrooms. And dessert: Rosemary Park’s Chocolate cheesecake. God bless, and happy coronary. Wasn’t it Goerge Peppard who said-”I love it when a plan comes together”.

  60. April 5, 2007

    GeneV

Gotta hugely disagree with you on the Norante Sangiovese. How the #$%^ can you like the Vitae Colli Senesi and not this one? My bottle of this had no chalk, no poop and lots of cherry fruit. Is this another one of those Italian wines where every bottle is a different experience?

  61. April 5, 2007

    elbowroom

I for one was elated at your scoring of DMN Sangiovese. There is a marathon thread on it on the forum, and I am distinctly in the minority in saying that it sucks. Can’t believe the Parker raves. I haven’t found anything from this producer that I would ever buy again.

  62. April 5, 2007

    TimF

QOTD: Chilled King Crab Legs and Prime Rib.

  63. April 5, 2007

    kingfunk

oh yeah the contado isnt bad either, you could get that at wl for like 12 bucks. Anyway how can a 7 dollar wine be good anyway, the glass bottle is the most expensive part, you might as well get wine in a box, like the silly drunk girls in college do.

  64. April 5, 2007

    glenn

i pray you rolled into S&W tonight with a case of white Zin under your pythons.

  65. April 5, 2007

    Les

This may sound ridiculous but I haven’t tried a Sauvignon Blanc since I turned 19 and truly discovered reds. Grassy cat pee notes with hints of poo may just be the ticket to reevaluating my earlier (childish) assumption that whites were dull. As for a hypothetical menu of what I would serve were you and a number of friends to come to dinner. There really is nothing comparable to oysters followed by a deadly mushroom pate en croute. As for the rest of the meal…

  66. April 5, 2007

    VINAIO

I like the Madeira better than the other….

Does DEMaJo Norante sangiovese own a Winery….?????LOL

  67. April 6, 2007

    Wendy Elam

all those wines kinda sucked. but thanks for the effort. i really like that you seem to be tasting some of these for the first time on the show. makes me feel better for when i buy a bottle, open it up, taste it, go “bleccch!” and pour it down the kitchen sink!
QOTD:winning the contest means i would have to get in front of a camera. not likely. (i’m shy, not ugly) but, if i did…(most of you guys are so uninspired — grill, grill, grill!) artichoke pesto bruscetta, osso buco, roasted green beans, garlic mashed (potatoes), blackberry torte ala mode, chocolate truffles.

  68. April 6, 2007

    Justin S

Muscadet sounds like an interesting wine, not really into the Madeira but I might give that one a try

QOTD: BBQ, lots and lots of BBQ

  69. April 6, 2007

    Rafa from Mexico

Nice episode, I have not been able to post but here I am again.
I will try the Madeira very soon.

  70. April 6, 2007

    YoungDave

YES! VALUE EP!! And a great one at that. Thanks for thinkin’ of the lower budget Vayniacs today, BIG G.!

QOTD: A true Italian Sunday dinner for my Belarusian guest of honor: homemade sauce with fresh basil, crushed tomatoes, and a few other of my mother’s family secrets, a little sweet italian sausage mixed in with homemade meatballs, and maybe some chicken vina rosso all over pasta. Probably the best I could do in my limited kitchen for ya.

  71. April 6, 2007

    JOEinLA

Short ribs marinated for a day in Cabernet and vegetables, then braised and slowwww cooked for 6 hours until the meat disolves in your mouth…ladled with a little of the brown gravy over a plop of garlic mashed potatos and small pearl onions with a light reduction drizzled around and over…creamed spinach on the side…that’s after the ceaser salad and before the choc mousse torte.

I’m thinking old world bordeaux or aged new world cab or the petite syrah I had with it tonight!

    cheers

  72. April 6, 2007

    Malarkey

Well, like Wendy above, winning would mean getting in front of a camera and I ain’t gonna do that. Even if I had the time to do it, I probably wouldn’t.

Now cooking on the other hand… IS my thing. And if you are bringing 1000 bones worth of wine, I’ll pull out ALL the stops:

    osetra caviar, totten virginica oysters
mussels with garlic, fennel pollen and chile vinegar
    butter poached lobster
grilled yukon river salmon with preserved lemon
    foie gras with huckleberry sauce
pan roasted veal chop with white truffle mashers
    coconut sorbet
    bananas foster (so old school!)

I could add more courses if that’s not enough!

  73. April 6, 2007

    Malarkey

In fact, I’ll offer my catering services to whoever wins ;-)

  74. April 6, 2007

    JOEinLA

I DO like Wendy’s dinner plans…Hell, I’ll bring $500 worth of wine and say we go for it…

Malarkey..I like the choices. What wine would you pair with those courses? Seems like many whites..?

  75. April 6, 2007

    SP

Gotta go: Filet, baked potatoe, asparagus, salad…

  76. April 6, 2007

    Justmarsh

QOD: Gary you’ll be eating cereal on top of a pile of dirty clothes if you come over my house.

BTW, You should sweeten the contest a bit. Make it so you bring 1K of wine and HAVE to wear the winner’s fav team jersey (ie. No Jets).

  77. April 6, 2007

    Deano

Gary nice episode these are some wines i can actually buy :) I will try to get a video going so that i can submit it but i cant promise anything.

QOTD: A nice steak cooked on the webber grill. Yummmmm

  78. April 6, 2007

    Lars

QOTD: Lutefisk, wild rice, and a some green jello with pear inside on a slice of iceberg lettuce. Hotdish would also do.

  79. April 6, 2007

    Fred

Another great show… I get real VALUE from these and pass you on to my west coast friends.

QOTD OK If I win this contest, I bring in one of our local chefs in Cannon Beach from the cooking school…EVOO …( htpp//:www.EVOO.biz/ ) to show you how Lamb lolipops and duck is done to perfection. On a scale of 1 to Gary, Bob comes close to Gary in showmanship and fun.

Of course if you were to come all the way over to the “other coast” we would have to make sure you stayed in luxury at The Ocean Lodge. (I provided a link … hope this wont sway you in any way).

GO Seahawks and Northwest wines … by the way, it seems all your wines have bones? Is that like having a worm in that mexican wine?

  80. April 6, 2007

    Jay

Maybe a steak and chicken combo. Bone-in Ribeye and Beer Can chicken!

  81. April 6, 2007

    Coupe 60

Wow, first off great show as always GV. But, as many others have said, I am very surprised by your thoughts on the Di majo. Granted the 2004 was better than the 2005 (but I think in an earlier episode, you did not like the 2004 either). But I found the Di Majo Norante to be one of my favorite Sango’s out there. It is my go to pizza and pasta wine, tasting more like a $15-20 bottle than a $7.

I wonder if there is some serious bottle variation going on there…

  82. April 6, 2007

    ecola

    I fear cat pee!!!

  83. April 6, 2007

    boz151

    GV,
I am in complete agreement on the Di Majo. Bought a few bottles from WL based on the Parker score, and was completely underwhelmed as well. Nice episode, keep up the good work.

  84. April 6, 2007

    Cliff

OK Gary, with this comment I am officially no longer a lurker! I have been watching these episodes for about two months now and I must totally admit that you have definitely guided me to better wines than … well … let’s say better than those I have been guided to locally. Your enthisiasm is infectious, I mean, I don’t follow sports, don’t even have a TV, but you make me feel like I’m really missing something … how the hell do you do that? Thanks for what you do. I’m a fan. Merde, I’m even starting to order wines from the Wine Library, and I must honestly say that it’s worth the shipping charges to have the crappy wines weeded-out for me. My palate is improving, but I gotta say that I don’t always smell or taste all that you perceive … damned fun trying to, though. Describing what I smell and taste is still tough for me … guess I’ll have to keep smelling and drinking … jeez, I may even watch a football game this weekend!

  85. April 6, 2007

    Acousticdoc

It’s amazing how I actually get excited about cat pee and puppy poo in my wine. I love this guy!!!
QOTD: Surf and Turf!! Lobster and Filet.

Starters; Pan fried Asiago Cheese chunks – excellent with any wine try it.
Appetizer: Steamed dumplings with a smooth white
    Salad: Garden Greens
    Main courses:
Ginger Tomato Shrimp with a smooth pinot or zinfandel
    Stir fried spinach followed by
Barbecue Grilled Angus Porterhouse with a solid full bodied Cab
    Roasted asparagus
Multi-grain fettucine with fresh parmesan (the real stuff)and butter
    Dessert:

JoeinLA: champers with the oysters, whites with the mussels & lobster, sauternes with the foie, reds with the salmon and the veal, think pinot with the salmon and something bigger with the veal. Hey, my menu is adjustable. Want all big reds? I’ll change the food ;-)

  91. April 6, 2007

    Tony S.

    Top 100?

Sadly, I don’t have a video camera, so I won’t be submitting a video. Nor will I be winning the contest. But if I DID win, I would ask my wife what the best thing she can easily make, and then I’d tell you.

Trust me…you don’t want me anywhere near the kitchen. Have a good weekend!

Cat Pee, Puppy Poop? Do you want us to buy these wines?

Got any more Leacocks (hee hee) Rainwater Madiera left?

Probably what I’m making tonight as it is one of my favorites. Cassoulet with a 1995 Hermitage.
Appetizer for me is usually caprese wtih a New Zealand Sauvingon Blanc or Sancerre depending on what is handy. So do we submit the same video we did for the other contest again?

OK poopsy. We loyal Vayniacs do love you and all you do for us for free (although I have personally bought a Brinks armored car load of wine in the past 3 months). Great show. Sorry my comment is sooooo late.

BTW – Are you going to have another NY WLTV party anytime soon? I’d love to meet the Creator and all the local Vayniacs…

Sorry I am late in commenting!

QOTD: What I make depends on what you are bringing to drink! But this is purely hypothetical since I am positive I cannot top Lars & TimF’s videos.

    Well,

Its unlikely that I’ll win the Vayniac contest, as my camcorder is in the shop getting a faulty zoom button replaced. However, since I love to cook and talk about food, I’ll tell you what I would serve.

Amuse Bouche – Portobello Bruschetta with seared pork tenderloin, basalmic onion, and rosemary aioli

1st Course – Escargot Domes with Duxelles, Foie Gras, and Creamy Garlic-Thyme Sauce

2nd Course – Crispy Seared Foie Gras over Louisiana Redfish filet with Rasberry Sage Gastrique

2nd Course – Roasted Three Pepper and Fennel Bisque with Lump Crabmeat, Lobster and a hint of Pernod

3rd Course – Grilled Paprika-Dill Shrimp with Spicy Garlic Butter Over Jicama and toasted almonds

Palate Cleanser – Pomegranite Kir Royale Sorbet with Black Pepper-Strawberry drizzle

4th Course – Lump Crabmeat Raviolos w/ Asparagus,Smoked Mushrooms & Tasso Roasted Pepper cream.

The Smartest Girl in San Francisco

WHAT IS GOING ON HERE!? It must be the lilac shirt. Poop, pee, and not one, but two strip teases? All in one episode?! It’s like some kind of John Waters wine vlog all of a sudden. All I can say is wow.

My favorite line for the day: “Little cute puppy, but it still poops…that’s the kind of poop I’m getting here.”

QOTD: What kind of food do you serve to a super taster? Something super tasty.

  112. April 7, 2007

    Pat Mc

QOTD belatedly: no camera but were I to win, then I’d ask which country you’d prefer the food to be friendly with (France, Italy, etc.) then I’d get one of our local chefs cause I’m NOT missing a word of the conversation which would be too cool.

  113. April 7, 2007

    Mike I

QOTD…based on WLTV…smoked salmon to go with the Krug, scallops to go with the Montrachet, beef wellington to go with the Margaux, roquefort to go with the yquem, and finally dark chocolate ganache to go with the port. If I don’t win it’ll be sliders.

    Hey Gary,
thanks for doing Value wines, next time they’ll be better!
I am exploring value wines from Spain, and apart from some Oak Monster appearance, they’re quite good!

Gary – GREAT call on the Di Majo. This has been scored highly for a couple of years in a row now, and it is truly pathetic. Bob might be getting kick-backs to rate this one! Nuf-said.

Had the 2005 Domaine Le Fruitiere Muscadet last night. My first Muscadet ever! Pretty good, but I don’t feel like I got a real sense of the varietal like when I tried Viogner the first time. Viognier tastes like nothing else. There’s no confusing it. I feel like I would have had trouble recognizing muscadet in a blind tasting. Always fun to try something new GV!

Great ep. You just prevented me from splurging 72 EUR for this Majo Norante! First have a bottle and then we’ll see.
QOTD: pitty for you I’m late. What I’m preparing for some “Burgundian” Orbis-friends this evening (grilfriends bd-party). Hold on tight, I’m gonna make your palate water like never before :-p

    Tasters
    1) Of course we’ll start with ‘Zeeuwse Oesters’ (oysters from our coast). Flat oysters are nowhere as good as they can get here (hm, … me chauvinist zealot) – Sauvion, Muscadet de Sevre et Maine sur lie – Cardinal Richard, 2003.
    2) Spinaci di Bologna (kind of a small slice of pie with spinach, mustard and nuts) – Gravner, Anfora Ribolla 2003.

    Hors d
    1) Tomatte crevette (Belgian traditional: tomato stuffed with grey shrimps and mayonnaise) – Domaine Vocoret, Chablis 1er Cru Montmains, 1999.
    2) Ravioli of summer truffle with lime oil – Mastroberardino, Radici, Fiano di Avellino 2000.

    Fish
    1) Cod en papilotte with pastis, pink pepper and basilic – Dr. Bürklin-Wolf, Wachenheimer Gerumpel Riesling 2004.
    2) Grilled slightly smoked swordfish with citronella – Dagenau, Pur Sang, Pouilly Fumé 1999.

Foie gras on roasted gingerbread, Belgian Whitelof, Haspengoud appels en Vrolingse perenstroop (pear syrup). (==> a classic from my hometown) – Lauerburg, Bernkasteler Lay, Riesling Auslese 1999.

    Les volailles
    1) Poulet Vallée d’Auge – Seresin Estate, Pinot Noir 2003.
    2) Pigeon Confit – Yannick Amirault, Grand Clos, Bourgeuil 1996.

    Lime granita

    Les Viandes
    1) Tuscan hare – Pinino Brunello di Montalcino 2001.
    2) Piedmontese stew – Braida, Bricco del’Uccelone, Barbera d’Asti 2003.

    Dessert
    1) Pandoro – Ruggeri, Cartizze, Prosecco delle Valdobbiadene Superiore.

    Pastore

Tried the bottle of Di Majo Sangiovese over the weekend, and at first was also underwhelmed. Smelled a little of feet and tasted it, too. Decided to let it breathe for around 30 minutes, and it really opened up. Nose became more of a dark cherry, reminded me of a reduction sauce I had on a quail dish a few years ago. Really nice after that.

Wow Gary, great to finally see a Madeira on the show.

I wonder if it took 209 episodes to see one of those, how many will it be before a vin jaune pops up on an episode?
