The Smartest Girl in San Francisco

The first wine looks like a tequila bottle.

It’s a hip hop kid in the house today! Love the jacket. This, I feel, is the true Gary style. After last week’s crazy hairdos, I feel like we’re getting the real thing here.

I like how you lined up the bottles today – like a little fortress of wine.

QOTD: It’s springtime: do a Rosé episode!

QOTD: How about an episode on Tawny Port? Ports have really been neglected a bit, if you ask me, and tawny ports are much more interesting to impatient consumers like myself.

Chateau Reynella Old Cave Tawny Port (16194)
Hardy’s Whiskers Blake Tawny Port (60210)
    Warre’s 10 Year Tawny Port Optima (30539)
Taylor Fladgate 10 Year Tawny Port (59840)

Ver Good episode. Four more wines on my ‘Wines to Buy’ list.
    Your doing a terrific job.

QOTD: How about doing an episode on one of your ‘Six Mix’ value packs.

Had to watch the back episodes before posting — that took a while!.

First off, thanks. Lots of great info in a very enjoyable format that beats any other source I’ve come across hands-down. Please keep it up.

QOD — I agree that Georgian wines would be a great topic. Personal wish-list would be to see you review some stuff from my hometown region, southeast Pennsylvania, (Chaddsford Winery, for example) and from where I’m at now, Monterey County in California.

Again, I’m extremely glad I found this vlog.

Gary, another great epsiode today. This price category is always a challenge because a the number of bad wines in it. Anybody can find a good wine that costs $20 to $40 but to find one that is good AND under, or around $10 can be challenging. When you were talking about the Viticcio, you said that most Italian reds at around $8 suck. I would tend to agree but here’s another one for you to try: Capestrano Montepulciano d’Abruzzo. This is also around $8 and IMO is a winner.

QOTD: How about another blind tasting tomorrow? My choices for a blind tasting show are as follows:

1.Budget Spanish wines. Have someone pick about 4 wines that were recently scored well (88 or higher) by Jay Miller, a new reviewer for the Wine Advocate. Let’s see how your palate matches up with Jay’s.

2.Have someone pick 3 or 4 wines from your 3 or 4 largest suppliers.

3.This one is not a blind tasting. Pick about 4 Ports from different price points. Dessert wines seem like they always score well regardless of how good they are. Let’s see what you think about some.

4.Not wine this time, but vodka!! I’m not sure if you are a drinker of spirits but try about 3 or 4 vodkas, Are the premium vodkas (Grey Goose, Ketel One, etc.) really worth a premium compared to “good old” Stolichinya, Pinnacle – which is supposedly made by Grey Goose, or Svedka?

Gary, how about a show on box wines? From lowest end up to the newfangly, supposedly OK box wines. You did 2BuckChuckeroo, so I think this would be interesting too. And I’ve seen the videotour of your store. Looks like you stock some boxes.

Or how about some fine Pinots. Penner-Ash, Costa de Oro, La Tache. :)

My wife loves RED wine!!!!!! But last week she got into that part of the Eurocave where “we” are trying to age some French whites. I came home and she was knee deep into these bottles of 2004 Pouilley-Fume Silex and Pursang and LOVING them….How about doing a show that includes NEVER talked about French whites?? Thanks for taking MY answer to your QOTD….Just a little piece of you is needed to put this on your show for tomorrow.
    Thanks

I’m still having problems watching the episodes….frustrating.

Anyway….how about an episode on Pinot Blancs or Gewurztraminers?

You were on fire today. Love the bad labels. Without a rating or recommendation, I’d never buy them based on those labels. How sad is that? I guess I’m a slave to marketing.

    QOD:

How about “This Just In?” Pick a few wines that just arrived. Tell us why you bought allocations, whether or not you tasted them or if someone on staff tasted them before hand and give us your insight.

    Gary -

I’d also love to have a run-down of your 2005 Bordeaux Futures recommendations – both for those of us who are looking for under $20 but *also* to make recommendations on which Futures are a steal for the money — before our retailers are all sold out! :) Love the show!

qotd: something obscure, like the german reds someone mentioned, or any little known grape varietals, even obscure american wines would work, from regions not known for wine. Mexican wines, hey, ever done Okanogan wines?? they are hard for us to get here in the U.S., unless you bring them directly back from there…

I also loved that dentist comment. Maybe I will throw that out at cocktail parties and tell people that the wine smells like my office.
I had some trouble with that player too, it kept having to buffer every minute or so. Quick Time worked much better.

Cat Pee, Clam Shell, and Cut Grass. Boy that makes my mouth water, how much of that Sauv. Blanc can I get my hands on!

QOTD: I’ve heard a few people say that wine making may have started in the middle east. So how about doing a show on the best wines from that region. I heard Lebanon has some nice ones.

Or you could do Oregon Pinot Noir vs. California Pinot Noir. They always taste really different to me, but I would love to know why.

Good ep, GV. Lot of energy today, a Monday person, wow. For the QOD… another BLIND TASTING EPISODE! Not only is it fun to see you be right, but it’s actually better to see you bash wines that are supposed to be good (Not to mention how funny it is when you’re totally wrong). Also, I’d like to see a Cali cabs from 20-40$ episode.

  24. April 16, 2007

    JonnyL

How about, if this hasn’t been done already (haven’t seen ALL episode, only found your awesome site a week ago)…talk about one of these 3 :

    1) What are the characteristics of a wine that you know you can buy to age? what wines do you age/for how long?

    2) What do you need for a home wine cellar? What would make up a good collection? Or what makes up YOUR collection?
    3) Take on some wines from one of the big lists like the wine enthusiast top 100…like some of the wines that should be bought as collectable/ why/ prior vintages/ which are a waste of money?

These topics are probably too lengthy for WLTV format, but you could do a mini-series :-P

Love ya as always, Gary. QOD: How ’bout another blind. Come on, you know you want to…
