You guys really need to take a course in video production. If you have a bright area in the background, it causes the auto iris to close down, and the rest of the scene, especially Gary, is in the dark. Either get a light or put the iris on manual and adjust it so you can see the “talent.”

I chatted with a girl at a party. A friend mentioned it and bet me $5 I couldn’t get a date with her. Almost 30 years later I still have the girl, and the $5! Worked out to be a pretty good risk.

    GV, fantastic episode!
Hey, if you like Époisses, you should definitely check the only other cheese I have ever encountered that has a similar level of stinky-dirtiness…. Langres, from the Champagne region… Mind blowing stuff too! Give it a try! I had 2004 Angelus last weekend at a tasting, very nice bottle, but not as nice as what you seem to get out of the 05 vintage! Rated it 92. I much prefered La Mondotte 2004, which was bringing the T. Rated it 94+.

QOTD: Not the bargain of a lifetime, but still…Let me just mention that WL usually sells Franch and Spanish wines for even less that you can find them in France or Spain… When I find a bottle here in Europe that Gary sells for the same price, I know I’m getting a good price… but last month, I bought a bottle Priorat Cellers Fuentes Gran Clos 2000 for 17 euros, same bottle goes for almost 50$ even at WL!

Let it be known today that episode 223 has been the most gratuitously gluttonous and self gratifying episode Gary has ever filmed.

The guitars have been running at about 9 or 10 as of late, but most certainly today the knob was kicked up to eleven.

Sure beats writing a paper like I am right now… We won’t tell your wife (or is it your sister?) that you ate enough cheese today for the entire month of April (this will be the only time I tease you about this I promise).

    Definitley an entertaining episode.

Gary, lay off the coffee before you tape the show, bro!

Another amazing episode, naturally. I don’t see myself running out to buy $250 bottles of Bordeaux. I already have tons of expensive wine that I can’t find the occasion to drink.

Sadly, I’m also not a big cheese guy. I like my stuff relatively mild (my stink quotient ends with swiss, and don’t even get me started with blue cheese! Can’t get it past my nose!)

Funny story, The Boss bought a few ounces of this truly rank cheese at Ledson Winery’s gourmet shop during the recent Barrel Tasting weekend (St. Paddy’s Day weekend). It was some locally made guerrilla cheese that reminded me of something seriously unwashed and unclean. So, she waits like two more weeks, then she ate it. I swear to you I couldn’t be in the same room with her for something like two days. THAT’s how much I can’t stand nasty cheese.

I can get behind the goat cheese, and with the imminent arrival of two goats to our farm, The Boss is looking to get cracking on starting a micro goat dairy. Sick! I’ll keep you posted.

QOD: Best bargain. Hmm, I don’t have that killer instinct that you do with flea markets and garage sales. Generally speaking, I am the poor schmuck SELLING the stuff that you turn around on eBay for a fortune. Poor me. Anyhow, I’d have to say that buying a sweet Coteaux du Languedoc for $11 that tastes better than some of the $50 bottles I leave laying down in hopes that they will suck less in another 5 years. Bittersweet, but a good deal is a good deal.

That’s what I’m talking about, a sick Bordeaux from the 2005 vintage, uh very niiiiice (Borat). When are we going to see more footage of your Bordeaux trip? I’m very anxious.

Great episode. Inspiring. I immediately left the house to buy the stinkiest, most foul smelling, paint-peeling cheese I could find! That style is my fav, too.
Would kill for a taste of the Angelus.
QOTD: Bought a old guide book, circa ‘46, on the rebuilding of Hiroshima for $20. Bookseller didn’t notice it had been signed by Lefty O’Doul and Joe DiMaggio.

Great Episode Gary! I really mean that. You brought the thunder today and were in especially good spirits. I guess that Chi-Town gig has carried over for you.

I don’t like cheeses as stinky as you, maybe do another one with moderately stinky cheese.

QOTD: I like to shop at Nordstrom for my clothes, but one day I was with my wife at Kohl’s, I found a cool dress shirt that was on sale for $8. I have worn it like 20 times.

TGIF, if I don’t go into work tomorrow will it be an acceptable excuse that Gary was on the couch so it must really be Saturday?

QOTD-Ebay!!! Many people can’t spell or don’t proof thier listings so I search for every typo I can think of before I bid. I have taken things from sellers so cheap I have felt guilty about it. I have bought 1960’s era matchbox cars that should go for hundreds for two or three bones.

  39. April 24, 2007

    Capt M

Nice to see you so pumped up, Gary. It does not bother me one bit. It contageous; it pumps everybody up. You see so much tragedy on the news this days, ie Virginia Tech, similar things right here in our own backyard, that what can be more pleasing and happy than to see Gary V doing Friday on a Tuesday. THANKS for opening and tasting such an expensive (and delicious) bottle for us. QOTD: I won’t answer it because it is the second time you ask this question, but I can tell you this: every single bottle that I have bought from WL (except for maybe one) represents a bargain in my mind and heart. For one, because they are all prime quality, and for two, because of WLTV. WLTV makes WL wine come attached with love. Kudos to you, GV.

  40. April 24, 2007

Angelus…..nice…..did u try its second wine, Carrillon d’Angelus?…..that’s more my budget!!

Best ASS-STINKY episode EVER! I may go run 20 miles tonight and then put the socks in my mouth just so I can step inside the Dodger’s ballpark of what this ep may have tasted like. Thanks, GV! QOTD: I usually get ripped off. No good bargains here.

    Gary,
Great episode. I have a glass of wine and a piece of cheese every night when I get home from work. It truly is on of life’s great pleasures. And the good stuff in the wine cancels the bad stuff in the cheese, so don’t get all torked up about your cholesterol when you eat some cheese.

Also, you are a hell of a salesman. I am seriously considering ordering some $250/bottle wine. Never thought I’d do that.
Will have to try the cheese. Looks good.

    GREAT episode, Gary.
Oh, man, those bargains. A man after my own heart with that playbill story. I keep hoping I’ll pick up some crappy painting at a garage sale and it’ll be worth a million bucks…but I’m more likely to be one of those people trembling with excitement on the antiques roadshow, all smug with my treasure, only to find out that my hand-carved Peruvian maracas are worth $50.00 and I have to pretend like I’m delighted about it, but my quivering lips give me away.
..anyway. QOTD: Lovely, flawless floral china serving plate- FREE from some drunk putting his stuff away early at a flea market asked it I wanted it. Don’t mind if I do.

Last year I had seats to US Open for Friday night and Saturday day session. The Friday night tickets were Arthur Ashe (the big stadium) seats. The Saturday tickets were courtside in Armstrong (small stadium). Total value was about $150 give or take. Friday was cancelled due to rain. This affected me in a very serendipitous way on Saturday. First, I ended up getting to see Agassi’s last match on Arthur Ashe. This match was rescheduled and I would not have had the chance to see this match otherwise. It wasn’t the best match but it was part of history and I was glad I was there. Second, a lot of matches were shuffled around due to the weather and some top seeded players ended up playing on Armstrong. This usually never happens. The top seeds almost always play in Ashe. So that afternoon I saw Men’s #2 Rafael Nadal and Women’s #1 Amelie Mauresmo play good matches. Finally, because of the weather, they added a special night session on Armstrong that was all general admission. I was able to trade my previous night’s ticket for that special evening session in Armstrong. And because I was already in the stadium from the day session, I got to keep my seat for the night session, which included none other than Men’s #1 Roger Federer. Even though he utterly dismantled his opponent (big surprise right?), being able to see the maestro up close like that was also a once in a lifetime opportunity. So for $150 I saw (among other matches) Agassi’s last match, Nadal, Mauresmo, and Federer up close and personal. As Gary would say, “that’s an out and out steal at that price.” Oh yeah, then I snuck back into Ashe to see the James Blake/Tommy Haas match.

If my memory serves correctly, there is a modern take on the Gingerbread Man story (circa 1992?) called the “Stinky Cheese Man.”

I had a cheese in Rome that I was really into, but my friends all said it just “tasted like mold.”

  59. April 24, 2007

Cheese!! Gary, you know I work in a cheese (and wine) shop, right?! I love Epoisses!
Oh, and I just wanted to share my best wine sales moment today, when I customer saw a display of Pinot Noir we had on sale, and said “Tht’s white, right?”

Epoisse!! Used to own a cheese shop…….I know that shit Gary and you are a beast….it was banned on French public transportation at one point because of the delicious stench. Just a little trivia there for ya.

Best bargain was a 2 dollar bj from an ex con. not really……..feeling inappropriate tonight

  67. April 25, 2007

    Les

FYI-I haven’t received the wristbands yet. Likely they are vacationing in customs, if they were sent north of the border.

I have yet to try an extreme, sock-rotting-in-a-ditch-for-a-year-with-something-random “stinky ass” cheese or, for that matter, any cheese with a cover of mold like shag carpet but I am always willing to push the boundaries.

QOTD – My best bargain ever was a hard cover box set of the complete poems of e.e. cummings in mint condition from a used book store in my university years for 50$(CAD)- I have never come across another set like it. I consider it priceless. It’s no longer in mint condition but it is dog-eared and well-loved.

LOL leatherpalate! Tuition my senior year at K.U. in 1981: around 320 bones. Ah, back in the days of a flat rate if you were a fulltime student… now I pay more than that *per credit hour* at UW. At least this is my last quarter! don’t wait to get that graduate degree kiddies!

LOVE giving cheeses a rating. LOVE the enthusiasm over drinking a $250 bordeaux. (shit I’d be happy as a tornado in a trailer park) But wait! I need to send a pic, and there’s a new contest? for a napa trip?? Hoodee!

    Hey Gary,

Best bargain must have been my magimix, that I bought 3 years ago, which I still havn’t payed for, even though the store insists that I have – Not on my Visa they havn’t!

  73. April 25, 2007

    Adam from Denmark

    Oh yeah,

The best bargain of them all, is that medical school in Denmark is free, and the government pays you 800 bones a month for doing it – hows that for a bargain!
I suppose its easier to manage a small country?!…

  74. April 25, 2007

    TSchampaert

Great cheese ep. Should do more like that. I can also go totally berserk for some cheese. Last week we had some Stilton washed in Port and a bottle of 1981 Barros Colheita, … oh, good for an organoleptic orgasm, sent me to heaven like a rocket on speed. Just OBNOXIOUSLY stupid ;-) .
QOTD: didn’t you ask that before? I remeber me telling you I bought a ring for my girlfriend, it cost 10000 or smth and the bank only got 1000 from my account … so, one hell of a bargain. Another bargain: I’m playing the French horn, bought a hand made Hans Hoyer of 30 years old from my teacher, I could just have it for a thousand. It’s for 4000-6000 on the market!
    C ya.

  75. April 25, 2007

    geespot

Give ‘em the high, hard, stinky cheese! That’s over the plate, steeeeeeerike!

Yeah, well. Good ep. Love it, love it all. The Angelus seems to be killing it, now to sell a kidney or something.

QOD: Bought a 4400$ limited edition Movado diamond ring, set in platinum, for 1200$. She gets comments on it where ever she goes. That’s enough to say ’steal’.

I had this at a wine tasting last weekend (along with 98-05 Le Gay). Problem was that, as is common at wine tastings, they did a pop and pour. This wine was so tannic and so dry that it was like dust. I wish I could have had a chance to taste this after a few hours. I’ll probably now never get a chance to taste this wine due to it’s price.

    Thanks Gary

  79. April 25, 2007

Winelibrary.com is my best bargain. Entertainment, great wine tips, ability to purchase desired wines immediately at a very fair price, opportunity to refine my palate and compare my perceptions with Gary, at any time of the day at my convenience, for no charge. How cool is that?

It’s felt like Friday as of Monday, so your couch-time seems appropriate! Nice!

As for the previous and now infamous sibling comment, that’s what makes “Live TV” all the livelier. No apologies needed – you probably had some folks in West Virginia on your side (joking here – please no angry posts from any kind people from WV…).

I’m from WI, so gotta love the cheese theme here.

  87. April 25, 2007

It’s about time you enjoyed your wine like a man and didn’t spit!! Plus, the finish is always better if you don’t spit. $250 on futures, eh? I guess I’ll have to wait until we have one at a tasting here.

So, QOD: I went to a thrift store in a small town called Cresco, Iowa and got a 100% Camel Hair winter jacket–with absolutely no problems and was the perfect size to wear with my suit for a grand total of $4.00. Yes…FOUR dollars. Freakin’ rad.

    OK, see you later,

Other great bargains: Anything you can purchase from a big-city barber. Don’t know where they find these deals, but don’t care to ask or want to really know. Jewelery, watches, cameras and season tickets and while you’re at it take a little off the top of the ears.

I saw 2 different shows recently that highlighted a great cheese producer up in Vernon, NJ called “Bobolink Dairy” (also some awesome breads).

Ever heard of them? Does WL ever carry cheeses from them?

Be sure to tell us (on an Episode) what you did with the rest of the wine…did you share? with whom?

I LOVE cheese Gary, so episodes including that creamy goodness is always appreciated. I like stinky cheese, too, but I don’t know if I would go so far as enjoying “ass stinky cheese.” :D

Gary…the weight lifting program must be going pretty well because I see you only had about two buttons fastened on your shirt and were flashing your chest through the whole show. (lol)

QOTD: My wife calls me frugal Fred and I’m always in pursuit of a bargain. One of my more recent bargain finds was a camera package including a Nikon N80 body, three Nikon lenses, a teleconverter, 4 filters, two photography books, 27 rolls of film and 3 sets of batteries for $200. The whole package was worth well over a grand.

QOD. I don’t know about the best deal but I can tell you the worst. This time last year I was living in Texas, having enjoyed the 60 degree winter. I got accepted to grad school at Rutgers with a nice fellowship. Seemed like a great deal at the time but come February I was sitting in snow, sleet, and every other kind of miserable cold in the world.

Great show, G!!! Its good to see you let a few curse words out. We have seen you almost say them plenty of times!

QOTD: I rarely find bargains. :-(

    Gary,

I’ve been meaning to tell you this…try Red Yeast Rice for the cholesterol issue. You can find it at any vitamin shop or even costco.com. It works wonders and is an all natural alternative to the drugs. My doctor put me on it after my thyroid issue and it dropped my levels from 240 to 178 in about 6 weeks. Now I take two a day and I eat all the cheese I want…need to in my line of work.

Give it a try…’cause cheese is sooooo good with wine!!

I’m behind in the episodes, but keep ‘em coming…they are so informative and entertaining!!

    Hi again Gary,

It’s hard to watch you enjoying so much cheese without running to the grocery to supplement my supply!

Great QOTD! As an avid E-Bayer I’m also on the lookout for great steals and deals and have fortunately found my share. Some of the highlights include an original hardcover Boy Scout Manual from 1910 and some boxes of out-of-print classical and garage-band LPs (many of the records signed by the artists or conducters). Let’s hear it for treasure hunting!

QOTD: Best deal ever: I was at a local market and they had Flora Springs 1998 Trilogy in their discount basket for $15.00. At the time, it retailed for about $50 and could stand up to a $100 wine with it’s foil tied behind it’s back.

Has Gary rated a wine 100 points on the show? I know he gave a Spanish wine 100. Help me out. Or I can scroll the spreadsheet. Man I want some Angelus

QOTD: I’ll call it right now…Teachworth Cabernet…I’ve been posting about them off & on for about a year. “Bob” is set to taste their wine for the first time in about 3-4 months….I’m calling them the next “Scarecrow” or other “Cult” wine….producing only 105 cases out of 2 acres in 2002 they are set to become the next “cool hidden find” in Napa

Nice to see some 2005 Bordeaux tasted. I made a moderate purchase at Costco (my best friend when it comes to some costly wines I desire), a 2005 Reginac, and hopefully in 10 years it will round out very nicely. I also call unfair on the cheeses. If I was in your position Id have my colesterol shooting upward from all the cheeses I was eating as well….. PICTURE PAGES!! Ha, I remember those with that musical pen. I wanted one of those so badly when I was younger. Could some of your tasting notes be more bizzare? Old socks in a ditch for a year? I love it! QOTD: I think the best deal I ever got was buy an orignal numbered Beatles White Album on vinal with all the extras and in very good condition (not the MFSL version). Even so, a gem I will always carry close to me.

QOTD: The best bargain I ever found was free Wine Library TV, Gary… :P

    Hi GV!!

I’m reviewing my favorite shows and the #223 is one of my favorites.
It’s the 4th time I’ve watched this show now, and every time I get jealous of you. ;)
One awesome wine and all those cheeses!
And that prediction was solid, 2005 Bordeaux changed completely the price point range.

I think it’s time for another Cheese & Wine Show!

Best wishes, for you, your Dad, Lizzie, Misha and Mr. Mott.

    Mauricio Fernandes.

qotd: A local wine store was carrying a Petrus in a temp controlled room in their store. But either the high rollers didnt know they had it, or they never shopped there. I’d seen it there maybe a year when I noticed they marked it down quite a bit so it would sell. I also knew the whole store was having a 25% off sale in about a week. So I went in the minute it opened that day and scooped it up. Got it for hundreds less that it was going for just over a week ago.
Gary how about putting a vin jaune on the show?
