My favorite OLD SCHOOL ‘thing’? hmm. hate to admit this guilty pleasure, but old school 80’s rap.

No, not hip-hop. I’m talking about classic Run DMC (Rockbox, King of Rock, etc), Fat Boys & Newcleus’ “Jam On It” (yeah yeah, we know, we know).

It just reminds me of a good time in my life. What can I say?

You should definitely add the word “clams” to your list of synonyms for cash. For example: “This bottle of booze will cost you around 35 clams depending on where you pick it up.” You say “bones” fairly often I’ve noticed and quite frankly your show is missing the word “clams”. Stay “fresh”, go pats.

Thanks for an Old World Episode as I realize that I really love this style of wine.

QOTD: CW said it really nicely (his comment was my first idea). I also miss the old style foot-long MD style – boiled then deepfried and covered with chili, onions and relish. Haven’t had one of those in years. I used to have one during lunch and then wander into Record Traders to flip thru the bin to find the latest British import. (Yeah it was the 80’s….sigh)

Great episode today. I am so old school!

QOTD: You can’t get more old school than Tom Glavine. No 100 mph fastball, just guile, smarts and execution of the fundamentals. Great fielder, most bunts in baseball history. Future 300 game winner and HOFer. I have total respect for the guy, even if he gets in as a Brave.

Good show, I’ve been drinking old world wines lately, so it was a timely episode. I must admit, I have grown to prefer the fruit bombs, these old guys don’t do it for me anymore.

QOTD: The old skool wine is easy Chateauneuf. Especially Boisrenard, who wouldn’t right. Foodwise though SUSHI. Now some may read this and think about the new wave sushi crap spreading like wild fire all over the country, but after working for a while in Japan having real deal traditional style sushi (or for that matter going full tilt and allowing omikase)there is nothing more hip and old school at the same time. Great show G-Man, way to throw down.

QOTD: My favorite old school thing is old 35mm cameras, particularly rangefinders. I have two Konica Auto S2s, a Canonet QL 17, and a Minolta SRT 102 (slr, not a rangefinder). I try to use them all at least once in a while. The Canonet traveled through Europe with me next to my Digital SLR.

First? Whoa, just missed it. But a solid episode eases my disappoointment. QOTD – Bell bottoms from the late ’60’s & real Army surplus stuff from WWII and Korea. Loved those cotton fatigues. (of course, hated them when the Army gave them to me for ‘free.’

  50. May 1, 2007

Great episode. Your list looks like it could have come from one of my orders.

Your review on the Fronholz is very similar to mine.

Couldn’t agree with you more about visiting Burgundy. One of the great two weeks of my life was Burgundy in 1986. Back when you could still afford them.

    Great selections.

Enjoyed the episode thoroughly. I also love red radish!

  51. May 1, 2007

    Ken B.

Great show Gary! QOTD: You alluded to it earlier, Johnny Mac and Bjorn Bord rivalary!

Liked the emphasis on old world for a change. I appreicate both, but I prefer the earthiness over the fruit bombs.

    Regards,

    Ken B.

I don’t think I ever heard you talk about Jersey trash, skunk, or green beans as a flavor. McEnroe-Borg…classic tennis matches. Love the comparison!

QOTD – cooking. Old skool (BTW you should have spelled school with a “k’) style. For example – Cast iron pan. Sear it. Pan sauce. Eat. When done right simplicity is king.

Coffee ice cream rocks. Starbucks with chocolate chips is may favorite.

    W.I.N.E. wine wine wine!

QOTD: How about old school work ethics. You showed up on time, you worked the number of hours you were obligated, you agreed to what you had contracted to be paid and your employer rewarded you for performance, not mediocrity. I can go on and on…you won awards and trophies for exceeding expectations, not for just participating. I’ll stop now because I might be showing my age. Gen X, Y you’re soft.

Why don’t you open two bottles of each so if you can make sure it isn’t bottle variation that is causing a wine to show poorly? Isn’t that what a pro taster would do?

Dude — pickles, skunk, sardines and green beans? I think you may have lost it. I think I’d dump it.

QOTD: Old school technology/computer stuff. Vic-20 Radar Rat Race, Atari 2600, programming on an Apple 2e…

  58. May 1, 2007

    Jeff G

Love the show. I’ve had the pleasure of the 90 Suduiraut Sauternes unfortunately. I’d tend to agree with parker on this one. The nose was splendid and I agree with your notes. However when it came to taste, it was a bit too cognacy for my palate. I agree with the brown sugar, mango, but it felt unbalanced with an overly strong alcohol mouth feel, it almost burned. I gave it the 86.

QOTD – Sting with the Police singing “Roxanne.”

  63. May 1, 2007

    H-Why,
There is a live version of that song from the ‘Secret Policeman’s Other Ball’, a concert, back in the eighties, for Amnesty International, (I think), that Rocks! ‘Message In A Bottle’ is also performed. Just Sting and a guitar.

Love the old school review and pulling out some older wines – 2001, 2000 and 1990! Love to drink some wine with a little age – if the wine can take it, it always adds different flavors – however, not sure I’d be looking to throw down $140 on a wine with a bouquet as you described for the Bonnes Mares.

Alsace truely is old school – when my wife and I vistied there, you see wine producers (Hugel, Trimbach, etc.) that have been making wine since the 1600’s.

QOTD: Gotta love the old school price of the Suduiraut – $33 for a 1/2 bottle of a 17 year old wine. Don’t think it could’ve been a whole lot more than that when it was released. Too many things way overpriced these days on release (just wish a had bought a bunch more stuff way back when).

QOTD: Watches … while a $20 Swatch will keep more accurate time than most $10,000 mechanical watches you have to be impressed with something so small built with hundreds of tiny gears, screws, springs, etc. and they run without a battery.

COLD PIZZA!!!! YES!!!!!!!!!!! COFFEE ICE CREAM – Holla!!!!!!!!!!!!! YES!!!!! You rule.

QOTD – A Team, Super Mario Bros and white high tops.

Old world wines!!!! I’m a fan – great episode, GV – I WILL seek out some of these wines. Red radishes were quite popular in my childhood, in the north – my mom still grows them in her garden every summer. We get beautiful radishes most of the year here (way way up north) in the grocery stores as well.

QOTD- Steak tartar made fresh at your table in a wooden bowl by a team of servers in a Romanesque, very expensive steak joint – picture mirrored paneled walls, big chairs, plush silence – think JR Ewing, old school enough for you?

  77. May 2, 2007

    E

What, nobody’s mentioned those ’60s-era Jets uniforms? Like, none more old school than that.

QOTD: When me, TJ, and G-Dubs would knock back some madeira and ‘87 d’Yquem (… that’s 1787). If only I’d saved a few bottles with Tommy’s initials etched on ‘em. Sally kept whisking them away.

Way to show us that good Bordeaux is still rediculously expensive, woot. Otherwise, good ep. Love ‘em nice and stinky.

Long time waiting for an ep like this. Great. My fingers go itchy for the Groffier. It’s way above my budget, but just your discription made my mouth water (I am just awake btw – watching you with a mug of coffee). Was Mothy in this bottle?
QOTD: favourite? Difficult to say. So much I love about old world. Maybe it’s hot chalkiness. Some wines, especially some well made traditional Sicilian whites can just taste like a hot chalky boulder in the middle of an olive yard, with crickets chirruping in the scorches grass surrounding it and some chunky lemons squashed on it. They just carry the smell of the sun. Gorgeous.

  84. May 2, 2007

The Belarussian sensation was firing on all cylinders today! Between the ‘former soviet union on your ass’ and old world ‘kumbaya’ comment- yeehaw!
No worries about Mossy man on New England, he’s an apathetic infestation of an athlete that will permeate his bacterial infection throughout the squad, rendering them useless. What a waste of space, and a STUPID move for a discipline team to pick up an aloof loser (in his twilight, I might add).

QOTD: No Traffic, and lisening to 60 & 70’s music.

  92. May 2, 2007

Love the old school dirty wines, especially the dirty burgs.

QOTD: Old school 80s rap – Run DMC style “It’s Tricky!!!”

  93. May 2, 2007

What is your favorite coffee ice cream? Mine would have to be Starbucks java chip!

QOTD: Love my Old School Nintendo! SMB, Bubble Bobble, Excite Bike, RC Pro Am, Dig Dug, and the list goes on. I break it out about 4x per year.

  94. May 2, 2007

Gary – Great episode. I love OW wines! Now, how about another OW ep, but this time on the wonderful wines of Rhone?

Dead heat for Old Skool Rap (Kurtis Blow, Grandmaster Flash, Fat Boys in the HOUSE!!!) and Old School WWF action, Saturday Nights Main Event, Steel Cage Matches, Jake the Snake throwin his python (Damien?) out into the ring, Brutus the Barber cuttin people’s hair after he won, and George the Animal Steele tearin apart turnbuckles with his teeth when he won!!! So glad my dad got me into that!

Speakin of which, what the hell happened to Nikolai Volkov?

  100. May 2, 2007

Muchas gracias Señor Vaynerchuk. Very nice selection; thanks for tasting such expensive wines for us. I’m not much of an “old world” style wine fan, but any serious wine connoseaur or taster comes across old world more often than not, so you have to know how to interpret and appreciate them.

QOTD: MUSIC, man.. CLASSICAL MUSIC! Every now and then, to enjoy at the theater or at home, either a dvd or just the music of Mozart’s Serenade No. 13 (Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (Nocturne Serenade)), or Brahms’ or Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, or one of Beethoven’s Symphonys. Pair that up with a glass of nice Port or any red wine. Pretty classic and old world, and pleasant. Haydn’s Quartets; I love chamber music too.

  101. May 2, 2007

    YoungDave

GARY! Great Ep., and I’m gonna go old school with a Loire Sauvignon tonight.
Also, I just got back from Ireland, and I’m all caught-up on the episodes I missed. The Guinness was great, but I missed wine! They aren’t very particular about their wine there, and I saw a rediculous amount of Hardy’s imported there! Good to be back and you’re getting my wristband pic soon!!

QOTD: Other than my big wheel (loved the big wheel), and my sweet blue and white striped Osh Kosh shorts, I’ve gotta mention my Marvel Comics and Marvel trading cards collection, Wolverine being the most prized of the bunch. I don’t really miss the blue and yellow striped tube sox, though.

  102. May 2, 2007

The only thing better than coffee ice cream is a coffee or mocha milk shake. Awesome.

Favorite old school thing: The Old Course at St Andrews Scotland. 600 years old and going strong. Every round of golf played there is completely different than the one before, as if on totally different courses. Endlessly fascinating.

  103. May 2, 2007

    Harmony

QOTD: the ice cream/pickle thing reminded me of peanut butter and pickle sandwiches on Wonder bread with a side of cheap generic Cheese Curls, maybe some Depeche Mode in the background, circa 1987.

QOTD: gotta be Bob Cousy in the short shorts destroying kids from long range.

  105. May 2, 2007

My favorite Old School thing would have to be putting a record on the turntable and listening on a very good hi-fi system. Nothing sounds as good as needle on vynil on s ggod system

The Transylvanian hussy is fabulous–I say that in a flattering way. Good theatrics, good humor, good camera presence. Very entertaining. Well done.

    Darn you KenP!

I will let you be last on one condition:

You must drink an entire jug of sutter home white zin in one hour without throwing up.

    The white zin challenge!

I give up. You can be last. Wait! I’m last again!

    Mr. Cabernet

I would say you are one of the toughest critics when it comes to ratings. Even a wine you rave about only reaches the 94-95 wine. I’m wondering what are your 96+ wines and what are the greatest values in that range?

    Yes, I’m a ratings whore.

  113. May 2, 2007

    KenP

Well, Kevin, what can you do. Wait…!

  114. May 2, 2007

    Kevin Craig

Ken, I have decided to do the white zin challenge myself.

I will begin in 5 hours, after it has properly decanted.

A fine wine as such must be oxygenated, as Mr. V taught me!

Great episode as usual G, Megan (wife) and I are planning a dessert wine party so I will have to throw the Sauternes you tasted today in there.

Shout out for coffee ice cream. LOVE IT, I MEAN LOVE IT, double shout out for the ice cream pickle follow up from my wife. I would think she was pregnant but she has been doing that for the 4 years that I have known her.

This was an excellent episode! Nice to see old world showing it’s strenghts once in a while.
But, what about this nivellation between McEnroe & Borg? Must have been a mistake there, clearly Borg is the upper level? Did I mention I’m from Sweden? Say no more.
QOTD – I’ll never, never forget sitting besides my grandpa in the boat steering the Mercury 10hpmotor from the seventies. That mercury is definitely my old school favourite. I wish I one day will find that smell in a wine. Perhaps it will be in an old riesling auslese, what do you think?

You and a little but of all of us IS changing the wine world. Un point c’est tout.

Btw, I spent a week in Belarus three years ago. It was really interresting.
Keep going Gary, you’re truly inspiring.

    Hi Gary,

Just discovered WLTV after the Cork’d news, and I’m loving it.

As a complete newb, I did not know that Burgundy & Pinot Noir were (sort-of) the same thing. Thanks for the headsup!

I first had Pinot Noir in Switzerland in the late 90’s – I think it was from Neuchatel. Man, it was great. I prefer dry wines, and the Pinot Noir was my first taste of what you guys call Old World wines. Very nice.

    Rock on,

    –Steve

I don’t know much about wine, but you contradicted one of the few things I thought I knew. You said all Burgundy reds are pinot noir. I thought many of them were gamay. I’m guessing you don’t categorize Beaujolais as Burgundy. The store I use doesn’t have a Beaujolais section. I’ve always assumed the Burgundy section included the Beaujolais. They’re combined on a web site I use.

Not sure if you’re ever gonna get this Gary, but wanted to compliment you on a great episode. Love the old world stuff as well as the new world. It’s a great time to be into wine, isn’t it?

ALMOST HALFWAY THERE! Starting from episode 1 a couple of months ago, I made it this far. By summer time I’ll be up to date!

QOTD: I am seriously into old school sports cars, always have been. My daily driver is a ‘74 Datsun Z, there’s a ‘69 Triumph in my garage totally disassembled and undergoing restoration. Always looking for the next one
;-) . The “old skool” rides have a style, personality and soul I think is lacking in modern iron.

I’m with exdamnyankee. My old school favourite is driving classic roadsters. British roadsters from the late 50s and 60s in my case.

BTW, I *love* old botrytis Semillons. I’m surprised by the price of the Suduiraut given we seem to be stung *really* badly for Sauternes. Luckily we have a lot of pretty good domestic wines in this style.

    Dessert Wine Nerd

Are you kidding? I love rieslings. I want to buy cases of JJ Prum and Dr Loosen Rieslings and drink myself silly. Lemonade at its finest? Count me in. The Groffier Bonnes Mares is a little pricey for me for a red right now, but something to think about when my pallete develops. That Sauternes sounds like a dream. I own a bottle of d’Yquem, and now knowing why the color of it is light, I figure now I’ll have to wait some time to open it. Im sure it will be well worth the wait, though. QOTD: Jazz. Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman, and John Coltrane just to name a few. Classic kick-ass music. Bitches Brew and A Love Supreme? That’s bringing the thunder.

just bought 2 bottles of 1990 Suduiraut and looking forward to drinking it!

QOTD: A properly-aged vintage port. I’m talking to people already trying to drink the 2003’s. Ugh. Let’s all kick back, stick the bottles in the cellar, and give these bad boys some good old-fashioned time. I’ll taste ‘em with you in 20 years.
