Why didnt you start with the 2000’s first? I thought that is what you wine geeks/nerds did start with the oldest vintages?

QOTD: I’m not fussy; sometimes it’s with our dog, Casey.

Speaking of dogs, I felt like one when I jumped in with the #3 comment above. More than one person has posted about how it’s silly to shoot for top 10’s, but I couldn’t help myself just like my Casey going after a thrown ball.

Nice ep, GV. I sadly am a new world wine whore who regrets not buying more Euro wines instead of the voluptuous Aussie shiraz and Cali petites/zins I usually fall for. Went out last week with friends and one of them brought a 1999 Lynch Bages that was wonderful with the food. The moral of the story is the same with your 2001 Ferrier above: well-made Bordeaux beats overpriced Cali cab most of the time and great Bordeaux values can be found in “off” vintages. And if everyone out there wants to reply to this with a “no duh,” I understand.

QOTD: My wife and wine friend Darin. Just last night we opened a Kistler 2004 Vine Hill and a 2001 Silver Oak Napa Cab. WOW, what a night that was! No one else I know would be into poppin bottles like that every once in a while.

    Hey GV!
It’s really interesting what you say about developing palates beings drawn to old world style wines…I can see my palate starting to like the dirty veggie flavors…weird…
QotD – My boss and soon to be father in law; Joe. We talk about wines, business, family and life…we talk about spirits, food, events, everything….just an amazing guy. I’m really blessed that he’s not only family, but a friend and the best wine buddy I have.

    Bordeaux!!
I have to say, Bordeaux is one of my favorites, but, but
when you went to this region there were only about ten
percent you really liked, if I remember correctly?

Just came back yesterday from Ireland. Wine they don’t
seem to have, but Guinness, well…. I don’t like Guinness
here but just like wine, it’s fantastic where it is made,
but is not licensed in America. Only had one glass of wine
    and it was, maybe OK.

Woohoo! Looks like Parker upgraded my 2005 Haut Bergey Rouge I bought from you a few months back from a 91-93 to a 92-94! Also looks like you upgraded your price. ;-) However, at the top of winelibrary.com it still says it’s under $27, but when you click on it, it says $30. You guys were quick to update that review, nice! Any more to update? I suppose I could spend the $100/year to read it all on his website… but I can get some futures for that money instead!

Just started watching your podcast … found it from a suggestion by Diggnation …

Luv the show … had not been drinking wine much lately …. you got me back in to it!

I have not seen every show … maybe the last 20-25 so you may have already done this tasting – Walla Walla Washington area wines. From my experience they are fantastic … may be my favorite region I have tasted overall but cannot find many since I moved to Phoenix in 2001. Can you do a tasting of theses wines?

QOTD – My best friend from Seattle. He comes down to Phoenix for Spring Training every year and we have at least 1 wine tasting night.

Another embraceable episode. 2001 Chateau Ferriere goes in my shopping list. Very well formulated analogy for leading us into appreciating and desiring the older concept of wine and its flavors. It’s nice when you get so poetic like that. By the way.. HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOMMA VAYNERCHUK! QOTD: I don’t know.. maybe I’ll enjoy drinking a bottle or two with KAHUNA some day :-)

Ahhhhh, now we’re talking. “Dead grasshoppers”? I remember in my youth when I would catch one and it would ooze tobacco juice. At least that’s what I thought it was a great Old World Bordeaux would emulate that grasshopper juice.

Great, great show and you hit it on the head that there’s nothing like the bouquet of an Old World wine, i.e. earth, tobacco, leather, chocolate, black currant. The French know how to make good wine.

QOTD: Though I do not get the opportunity to taste/drink wine with him, my buddy DrWo, is the person to whom I really enjoy and appreciate drinking wine. He is much more knowledgeable than I and I sometimes feel intimidated but it is still a treat. We both appreciate fine wine. I just with the little woman (wife) enjoyed something other than Gatorade! :(

    Bring on the Reignac!

    Au revoir!

QOTD: My friend Heidi; not only do we have fun, but she has about the same level of knowledge that I do, so we can have really great conversations about it. And we come up with really funny descriptive phrases!

Never been first before so that was cool. Drinking wine with Canuckchuk. The 1997 Sterling Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is one that comes to mind. But there have been quite a few. Funny thing about this episode is that I enjoy the bordeaux but Canuckchuk is not as big on them. Great episode Gary!

The thunder was brought today, Gary. Great ep. I love how you always announce that big news is coming, but you never tell us the news. :) Reminds me of that old joke: How do you keep an idiot in suspense for 24 hours?

  62. May 3, 2007

    AcrobaticFish

QOTD: My girlfriend C-dog and my buddy ‘enzo. Our palattes more or less lie on the same spectrum, but we’re each sensitive to different parts of it.

Speaking of eating grasshopers, any of you ever eat a cooked silk worm? They’re popcorn buttery, not unlike some chardonnays (if chardonnay was a giant slug cultivated for human consumption).

Hey Gary. Great QOTD. My answer in my Bro -in- Law Ray. This guy has been drinking wine for about 2 years only but he has the most refined Palate of anyone in my wine circle. He is a very easy going person who “Stops to smell the Roses”. What a great guy! This has allowed him to be so respectful of the old world flavors. His palate learns faster than anyone I know. You speak so much of being open minded an I swear this is the key to the very next experience in wine. What a blast to have glass of great wine with someone who really gets it!

My favorite person to drink wine with is my buddy Phil. He is a lawyer in town, italian descent, makes his own wine. Has a great wine cellar and many unique wines, usually of tremendous value. Best blind taster of wines that I know! Last night he served a Chilean Pinot Noir 2005 for ten bucks that was a great buy!

cool episode, i’m a npr newbie and I like the enthusiasm! I also like seeing and hearing about wines that i can actually afford (under $30); anything above that it is like pr0n – they would be really cool to try, but ain’t no way I’m gonna be doing that bottle or blonde.

My husband and I just brought out a bottle of 1997 Gevery Chambertin that I thought was getting old and a bottle of 2002 Babcock pinot noir. He loved the Chevry, but it was Babcock all the way for me- pure silk.

Very nice that you have yet another vintage of chateau Ferriere’. Conventional wisdom and Cooks Encyclopedia of Wine says its not generally available outside France.
Although, it is very diplomatic of you to respect others preferences for hot, grape kool aid, oak soaked wines, you have to ask yourself one question. Would YOU rather be drinking a bottle of say a $70 Mitolo Shiraz with a bizillion Parker points. OR a mature bottle of even a second wine of a great Bordeaux at half that price from a decent vintage? example, Lacoste Borie 2000 @$30. Both are well made wines but I believe great terrior trumps forward opulence.
QoTD- George Thourogood since apparently we both drink alone.

My wife or my friend John. Great episode. I wish it were easier to come across good Bordeaux by just walking into a wine shop and grabbing one. But then…all good things are worth working for, right?

    Gary,

Saw you Wednesday on Uncorked (MOJO channel) New York show. This may be old news but it was a surprise to me to be channel surfing and find this show. I see it is on again tonight at 11:30 ET and tomorrow at 10:30pm ET. I liked the over/under contest. Two out of 3 not bad!

QOTD: My middle son who likes watching WineLibraryTV!

QOTD: It really don’t matter who’s there to drink wine with, I just love sharing with people. I will have to say though my gf, she’s been with me through it all and is learning a ton. Gary, you come a close second! LOL

And what the hell was with calling out Mott cause he was crying! LOL maybe girls looking for the sensitive type will start callign now!

My Girl DARCEY is hands-down my favorite person to drink wine with. She has a great palate, is always willing to try something new, likes what I like (which seems rare among wine drinkers … or is it?), and LOVES ME!

What more could I ask for?

    Thanks Gary!

QOD – My neighbor. He’s providing a good challenge. He reeeeaaally wants to find that $6 wine that proves the bigger price tags are not worth it. So I try his “Pinot Evil” and then pour us a couple glasses of $20 Pinot with the price tag hidden. He’s slowly coming around. I look forward to the day his palette is developed enough to appreciate a 10 year old $50 Brunello.

My wife is my favorite person to drink wine with because we do everything else so well together. Her tastes and mine differ but we have worked through our wine differencees and enjoy going form winery to winery or just sharing a great bottle. We have a large wine tasting group that meets every other month and I learn a lot from them and enjoy their company as well but it isn’t the same.

I’m now convinced to grab the Ferriere that I’ve been walking past every week at my LWS, my wallet thanks you again, GV.

QOD: My fiance. Even though she says she doesn’t like wine, it always makes me chuckle when I pour something nice and her eyes widen a bit and she says, “Hey, this is pretty good. I think I can drink this.” I’m still searching for the bottle that blows her away and makes her a total convert, so I can do an evil cackle and say, “Told you so!”.

Love the old world episode Gary. Keep them coming.
QOD: My girlfriend Ashley! I was BIG into wine and started teaching her, three months later her palate is better than mine. I’m so jealous

Great episode. Love Bordeaux, especially St Emilion. Looking to expand my horizons with Margaux, Pauliac etc.

Had the Chat Martinens on the possible list before the show … not anymore … deleted it after watching your comments / reaction. Trust your judgement after trying the Larmande 2001 based on your recommendation, it was great. Thanks !!

Already have the 2001 Ferriere on order so cant wait to get it. Might even get another.

    Grasshopper

First QOTD – easy answer…Mrs. Grasshopper!! We love to drink wine together..

Speaking of Grasshoppers…..Sensei, you equated old world wine to dirty grasshoppers…stepping on grasshoppers….tasting grasshoppers! DEAD grasshoppers……THE HORROR!!!!!

Just kidding…was pretty funny, still pushing for you to take a drug test! Especially if you are stepping on and then tasting insects!!!!…..:)

    Love ya man!

    Badger Ann

QOTD: That would be Badger Rick, my dearest husband. In fact, I don’t even open any bottles when he’s not home, since it’s just not the same.

Otherwise, there’s a motley crew of us who all seem to congregate at our local shop’s weekly tasting about noon every Saturday. It’s fun to share opinions and learn a thing or two. Just like we do here at WLTV!

QOTD: Becky! Great friend who enjoys a good bottle of wine. Helped me turn from the sweet wines and develop a taste for Merlot and Bordeaux.

    TSchampaert

QOTD: my girl. She is quite headstrong and never gives in to some connoiseur’s opinion. A few months ago she dunked a glass of La Mordorée 2001. She didn’t like it, that’s all and nothing was gonna change that, even all the other tasters going crazy. Love that.

Great episode, as usual. I’d love to see more tastings of Bordeaux that is nearing its drinking window.

Your notes are very similar to Parker’s on the Martinens. This seems to happen too often on Margaux.

Nice ep Gary. The more you talk about them, the more I want to try French wines. But I HATE spending money on French products of any kind. I just hate the idea of supporting those cowards in any way. I wish all these great wines came from a different country!

QOTD: My wife, my dad or my close friend Nick.

QOTD: My favorite person to drink wine with is my lovely wife, Jane. She enjoys the experience as much as I do and she has an excellent palate – she can really pick out the subtleties in the flavor profile that often escape me.

I enjoy drinking wine with all of the staff at Ivar’s Mukilteo Landing (where I currently work)! We get together about once a week and sample new wines and really enjoy our time together. Great times!

    Dessert Wine Nerd

QOTD: Myself. A good deal of my online friends arent drinkers, and most of my offline friends dont drink wine either. Some of them are recovering alcoholics, and did drink and enjoy wine when they did drink. I do need to find a nice lady to share my stash with. Yeah, that’d be nice.
