    Gary,

I’m intrigued how you sniff your wine, kinda like you start slow and end with a big inhalation. I find that when I do that, I get a lot of alcohol vapors on the nose.

I gotta say that I’m not terribly looking forward to the Transformers movie, this is going to be quite a summer for movies. Spidey 3 was a bit of a letdown for me personally.

Excellent job on the use of Twitter today. I was able to watch without the annoying bzzzzzzzzzzzzzz that distracts me in that “why the heck can’t he turn that thing OFF” kinda way.

QOTD: WLTV is quite a phenomenon. And I find it particularly awesome that you’re still so committed to the show and to your audience. Also, bringing the audience closer through the use of things like Twitter (and perhaps Talkshoe and UStream in the future — who knows?) engages us and gets us excited about what you’re doing. Keep it up!

    Gary,

I haven’t had very good experiences with Spanish wines over the last 6 months and seems that you had a similar experience today. The selection in my area is not great so that explains my trouble, but for you access is not the problem. It makes me think that more often than not, I’m going to be disappointed with any Spanish wines that I can get in my area.

Great job on the show and I think adding Twitter was definitely a cool idea.

Awesome episode today. I know you get disappointed to have a whole episode where you can’t really recommend anything, but there’s nothing like hearing, “this wine is VERY one-dimensional, and that dimension is crap!” every once in a while.

Responding to a Twitter comment you made on a French rose episode: Yes, definitely, about time, was wondering when you’d be getting around to that. Or, summer’s pretty long, so how about two: French rose, and then dry pinks from the rest of the world. In my limited experience the French ones tend to be very good, but there’s also stuff worth looking at from Italy, Spain…maybe New York?? Very interested to get some recommendations in the category.

I like the idea of giving drink/cellaring windows for the wines you taste. That’s a good idea.

Hey Gary….who was the first one to start leaving you comments about the way you say your name…making it into syllables (remember I likened it to Mad Dog Russo’s opening)

Who came up w/ the term Vayniac?

Who has over 3000 Forum posts?

    Who does the SS?

Dude…time for you to admit it…I’m the man!!!!!!!!!

QOTD: Awesome is not even the right word! You would have to cellar the word Awesome, and come back to it in 10-15 years and then use it to describe WLTV. =)

  37. May 8, 2007

    SS Chris

By the way, I’ve just noticed the update of the main WLTV page….with a big banner w/ HUGE letters saying, “Click here for all of Gary’s tasting notes and scores from the show”…. I’m happy for this new link, but no mention of the SS Chris!!

Now up above there is still the small link that says the “Chris Stanisci Spreasdsheet”, but nothing on this new HUGE banner across the middle of the page???

Maybe in parenthesis (The “SS Chris Stanisci” Spreadsheet) or (provided By SS Chris)…..something….anything. WTF!!!!!!!!!

QOTD: So awesome you should be arrested.

Great enthusiasm today. sorry the wines sucked.

Gary, you started talking to Chris Mott alot more, and today you kept it up with Eric. I like that, because it keeps the improvisational aspect to the show and reminds me of the old episodes of Conan.

In terms of Twitter, give your phone to Eric or someone else. Let them screen all the jokes people send in and have him ask you the questions. That way there will be less dead air while you scan through the phone. This keeps the live aspect to the show (which is a GREAT IDEA) but eliminates some of the A.D.D. problems.

    Gary,

I love the bludgeoning stick. You really put the smack down on the Azul. That anger (and your high cholesterol) is probably from the steroids – ala Rocky IV! Thanks for the honesty. There are too many “polite” reviews out there.

I recommend stopping the steroids so you can eat more cheese. Also, wine raises your HDL (the GOOD cholesterol), so take comfort that the juice is helping.

Good idea in comment #39 by cgf – let someone else screen that twitter thing for you – although better today, it is still distracting.

QOTD: Very awesome. Even the 0 for 4 episodes are useful Gary – probably more so – I often will buy a less expensive wine based on a critics’ review/score to give it a try – and I usually end wishing I saved my money – probably less than 50/50 on 90+ wines under $20, especially reds … and from the same critics that I usually align with on other wines.

Honest episode. Little dissappointed with the rap on the Verget Chablis. Love the wine. But I never taste at room temperature as you do. I feel warmth can itself be a flaw for some whites.

When I actually start a cellar, I will take your wise advice, splurge on a few fine wines recommended by you, and bought from your store, because what you do for the Vayniacs is the epitome of awesome.

  55. May 8, 2007

    Garret Nagle

    QOTD:

I would say that collectivley speaking, WLTV has been just as much of a blessing to the Vayniacs as it has been to you. We Vayniacs more and more each day are becoming more enlightened with wine knowledge, and speaking for myself, your show has called into question my career path.

When I graduate in two weeks, I will have a communications degree which I have always planned on applying to marketing or public relations, but I’m begining to believe I can “make it” someday as a food and wine writer. Food and wine has always been a special thing to me since I began watching Iron Chef eleven years ago, but I always thought it would be just a fun hobby. I mean, c’mon… be successful in the food industry? Thinking about that made visions of coffee shop day job-ers pop into my head just waiting for their big moment in Hollywood….waiting and waiting and waiting….

But watching WLTV has encouraged me. You took a vision and worked hard at it, and it turned out to work. If it didn’t would you have felt like a failure? NO! Because that’s part of the entrepreneurial spirit… the courage to take a good risk, knowing it might not always work out – these are the people that end up becoming successful. It’s sort of like recording a song in one take. Sometimes it just clicks, but usually you’ve got to work at something for awhile and get it just right, sort of like a business idea.

I know I can write, so why not start thinking about the steps necessary to reach my goal in 5 or ten years?

    Thanks once again Gary,

    Garret Nagle

uncomfortable high-fivin’ man-to-man love on the beach. too funny, g. and yeah, QOTD: pretty awesome. I’d disagree a little with your starting the wine cellar answer. I mean, splurge, sure, but one of the ways to really figure out what you’re into is to compare the high-end sh!t with the lower end–how about a 90 pt. $40 Cab with a 91 pt. $20 Cab (e.g., both rated by the same person?). Cheers, bro.

  58. May 8, 2007

QOD: Not only is this incredibly awesome, it’s INSANELY, LUDICROUSLY awesome. I love the show, the forums, and the WINE. Gary, you are creative, funny, dedicated and have managed to amass a group of intelligent, humorous, and all around wonderful people in one spot. All of us together, we are the phenomenon. So, to Gary and all the Vayniacs, keep it up.

Great show. Agreed with Comment 26: By Dave H how “you get disappointed to have a whole episode where you can’t really recommend anything, but there’s nothing like hearing, “this wine is VERY one-dimensional, and that dimension is crap!” every once in a while.” Big Ditto!

and Twitter was great today. I enjoy you answering questions like the last two days. Fantastic. Keep up the great work.

they say Charlie Parker never did the same solo twice and you my friend have never done the same show twice! that was top shelf even (though the wine didn’t bring the thunder). you were snapping off one-liners like a metronome.

  64. May 8, 2007

    JimKay

Yeah – he liked the Prima (4 btls in the basement). One reason to expect it would be good – the winemaker (taken from another site): Mariano Garcia established his reputation at the world-renowned Vega Sicilia in Spain’s Ribera del Duero region, where he was the winemaker for 30 years from 1968 to 1998 when he decided to produce his own wines. Good region + good producer = good wine.

I’ll say it again, WLTV has exposed me to wines I (and hundreds of others like me) would never have considered otherwise. You get one life, mine is enriched by the wines I’ve tried because of WLTV.

    QOTD: How awesome?

I found WL by Googling “free Shipping wine”, began watching WLTV in the 170’s or 180’s (haven’t missed one since). I’ve since gone back and not only watched episodes 1 through 109 (so far) but have read EVERY comment of EVERY episode I’ve watched! (Okay, so I’m easily amused). Just awesome stuff. I figure I’ll complete the cycle in a week or two, be forewarned the logical progression will be the forums (don’t say you weren’t warned). Keep up the great work, it really is a service to the community and, to boot, will surely generate customer loyalty. Your joy is contagious, something to look forward to each day.

I’ve decided to overlook the whole Jet’s thing, nobody is perfect (except maybe SS Chris). I think I’m safe for awhile. Judging by his comments tonight he’s stuck inside until the swollen head reduces (Hi Chris!)

    Gary:

You are always asking for constructive criticism and compliments, so here is my take on things: I have noticed in the last few episodes that you have been trying to keep from cursing during the show and thank you for that. Keep up the good work and please try to exclude all “colorful language” – I have a 14 year old who likes learning about wine and watching the show, but I would prefer to not expose him to cursing, if possible. Thanks for trying to keep it clean, for Quentin’s sake.

Wow, great advice on cellaring with a limited budget. I don’t think I’ve ever heard it said better.

QOTD: Yep, this is pretty stinkin’ awesome. In fact, I’m astounded that any of the Vayniacs would be able to say with a straight face that technology is getting in the way of relationships. Look at all the friendships that have sprung up as a result of WLTV. And many of those people will eventually meet each other in real life. I know I’ll be meeting a bunch of you guys in SF later this month. Seriously, the only people who say technology separates us are those who don’t use it, don’t understand it, or are just naturally fearful of new things. Sure, personal letters have all but disappeared as email has become more and more popular, but it’s idiotic to say that people are communicating less. We’re simply communicating in new ways. Now, if someone wants to talk about the relative value of the different modes of communication, I’d be happy to hear them. I’ll be the first to admit, for example, that personal letters tend to have more depth than most emails.

    btw, SS is the MAN!

This is all quite cool. But here’s the problem Gary. You are tasting someone else’s 90 pointers. If you taste the wines your watchers/Vayniacs suggest, I think you will have better luck.
So with that in mind- how about tasting a Numanthia Termes or a Borsao Tres Picos (for the Spanish coverage) or a Guigal Gigondas for the Rhone coverage.

QOTD: You do show the love and it’s totally awesome!! My gf still can’t get over that you kissed her twice, once on each cheek! LOL… (sure hope liz don’t read these!)

You’ve lately been using milky a lot, and that’s something that I was curious about before I heard you say it. Sometimes I get a cheese taste on the mid palate or the dairy that you talk about. I’m glad I don’t just have malfunctioning taste buds!

You have to have days like this episode to appreciate the good ones. It is just such a pleasure to have some prescreening. I have had the same experience as Gary with wines that are processed beyond terroir to the point of garbage. Chilean wines are that for me and many from CA, Spain, and Australia. I rarely find a Rhone or Bordeaux wine I am that turned off on. I started my cellar (now ~550 bottles as Gary recommended. I found wines that were maybe too tannic to drink right now but with time they have become wonderful and a bargain because buying a wine 7-10 years later that has aged properly may cost a fortune. I age almost all of my wines if only 6 months for some or 10-20 years for some. The only problem I have is that I’m simply getting too old to comfortably buy wines that need cellaring for 20+ years as I’m not sure I will appreciate them as much in my ’80’s. So Dunn Cabs are out.

Gary, you bring much to the table and it is we who thank you. Who else would publicly say this wine brings garbage to the table?

One thing anyone reads this and knows how to work twitter. I have downloaded it to my Mac but I can’t for the life of me figure out how to send messages or post replies. I don’t use text mail on my phone so what are my other options? There seems to be no spot to click compose message.

Gary! Loved this episode, despite the crap wines…mainly because my beautiful daughter was showcased in the collage of pictures. Literally brought tears to my eyes, a huge honor man. I like the twitter, but perhaps you should have Eric hold your phone while you taste…so its less distracting to you as well.

I wanted to respond to both last shows QOTD and the show before…

Technology is slowly getting more simple and refined for the most effective use by a human. This gets me excited to see things such as Twitter having practical uses. On the other hand, until we get to a point of optimum efficiency…our brains are going to be sapped of intelligence with all of these distractions. Recently they did an IQ test with Blackberry users and pot smokers (one in the same?) well the pot users scored higher than those getting email messages during the iq test…what does that tell you?

Which brings me to my the next QOTD, I love it. Even though at times I lurk for a period of time, there is never a day when I will miss my WLTV. I say my…in the sense that you have made a very viewer owned show, for that I thank you!

Loved the sleeves rolled up by the way! Oh, one more thing…the lighting was really good on this show, what did you change?

    Gary,

I also love the Rhone wines, especially Chateauneuf du Pape. Too bad this St. Joseph wasn’t up to snuff. I did a quick search in the archives, but I don’t know if you’ve done any shows with California Chateauneuf style wines. In particular I’m interested but have never tried the Tablas Creek wines from Paso Robles by the Perrin family of Beaucastel. What’s the Esprit du Beaucastel like? Is it like a good Chateauneuf? That could be a good wine to try (if you haven’t already).

QOTD: It’s awesome enough for me not to crush it. And I tend to crush a lot of stuff.

Bad news: the wines were not so great. (ratings should be met with scepticism)
Good news: WE MADE THE MONTAGE! In B&W no less.

I AGREE with what you said about technology… as much as I fretted about it, it certainly DOES foster more human interaction!! You hit it right on the head.
    QOTD: It is FREAKIN AWESOME!!!!!!!!!
Gary, you’re so personable. I love it. Thanks for all you do. You are definietly fostering my love of wine.

wow, our second appearance on WLTV in a month (first the shoutout for carolyn’s b-day and our engagement, now the wristband pic), I hope we can still go out in public w/o being mobbed! It’s fun to be a [tiny] part of something great, thanks for letting us tag along. When you’re famous I’ll tell all my friends “yeah me and gary are old homies, we’re like this || ”

Loved your answer to the “what do you have to do to rate wines” question. Your little rant there was damn near t-shirt worthy, though not quite at the level of Dr. Evil’s childhood story. But close!

Thanks for the 80’s references, too. Mossman prompted a web search that yielded a crapload of kick-ass toys that I used to have. And mike tyson’s punchout OWNED me. I could get to tyson without getting hit, but then lose to him every time. I had to have my buddy beat him. How sad.

WA state oysters, baby! You know it. Ive shucked a fair amount of oysters in my day as a cook. Washington for the win! Yes, win. Too bad on the Chablis. I got excited when you said lime then it turned into a letdown. Im going to save that $20 and use it towards a J.J. Prum instead. Nice notes on the Azul. You are brutal! I want more… MORE! I beat Mike Tysons Punch Out ONCE (damn hard game) using the cheat code (shame). I dont think anyone caused more anger at the time than Super Macho Man, though. QOTD: Its on the same level of awesome of having Mario Batalli cooking you dinner every night, AND feeding you himself.
