Gary, Interesting video. These people are very serious about thier wine as they should be. Palate fatique must move in quickly. I noticed no note taking, is that typical? or was the video shot at a seperate time of another go round? You looked like JFK at his desk while you were at Cos, hands on the desk and head down. My video froze while you were doing this and the guy with you had his head down as well. It got me thinking….it’s wine, Bordeaux, and here it is treated like States property, which I guess the French would say it is.

    Good insightful job Gary.

Ouch! I was hoping for some action packed tasting, full of tasting notes & Quixotic quips from the VayNerChuckMan, but all I got was a nap!!! Two thumbs down. I couldn’t get past the first 5 minutes! Ouch!

funny mole. I am not done.

Gary, are you able to strike deals there, or does the 3 tier system keep you on your toes? I noticed that your brain was working during tasting the rose at Haut Lafite. If you purchase all the allocation then ….well you would have it all.

    Lots of questions.

so mole, thats why the first post was so sparsely worded. If I had anything to say/ask I would have needed to watch more than the 14 seconds I did when I noticed the 0 comments below. Could not resist.

QOTD: First thoughts, because I’m only 10 minutes into the video, is that this is AWESOME. Since I do enjoy chatting up the winemakers, I find it comforting that you’re asking pretty much the same questions I do of winemakers and wineries. First vintage, what kind of oak barrels & how old, etc.

  25. May 9, 2007

Yah. I suck! These comments are meant for Gary and not me. I like to read them before watching and……scrolling, you know. Nice 1st!

Gary, I’m 7 minutes in…you are at Haut Brisson….and this is GREAT!!! I love it so far and cannot wait to see the rest of Part I and Part II tomorrow.

One suggestion….I’m wondering if, when people appear, you can add text to let us know their names & titles. You can kind of figure it out, but it would be a nice addition.

    and….I get a break from the SS….thanks!!

    Fantastic episode!
I REALLLLLLY want to go down to Bordeaux and do this? Do you need to be GV and buy for thousands of $$$ of wine to do this or are normal people also allowed on those visits?
Anyways, I agree with the comment that asks for text telling us who those people are, I recognized a few of the more “famous” ones, like Paul Pontarlier at Margaux, but it would nice to know…

    Can’t wait for tommorow’s ep!

Gary, please learn some french! My story..I picked up 2 Japanese hitchikers north of Barcelona and proceded into southern France with them as my buds and soon to find out.. interpreters. The most amazing thing I have ever seen is the transformation of the french from tourist haters, to chateau hosts, after “foreigners” made a simple attempt to honor them by speaking their language. They are proud of their culture, language, history and frenchiness, that’s just the way they are. They love what they’re doing and think if you are there you should love it too! Just like us! If you acknowledge that, you get the keys to the city. When my hitchikers spoke pidgeon French with a Japanese accent to someone we would meet for directions or whatever, I swear, the gates of heaven would open and they (the french) would lite up like Xmas trees. We were overwhelmed with kindness and cooperation. It was hilarious and the instant graciousness/hospitality the french offered blew me away. Everyone involved immediately got off! End of story. Thanks, bye

It was a nice journal, but lacked the polish of the usual WLTV. Long and muted. I would suggest more of a montage of different clips with a soundtrack to keep the tempo fresh.

    Hey GV,

Just finished Part I. The audio was a little difficult to hear…but switching to headphones made a big difference. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this…the time seemed to pass much quicker than I had anticipated. Shoots down my comment about length earlier when I mentioned this to be the next Mondovino. Great job, and look forward to Part Deux.

    GV,

Vayniacs are pretty lucky to get to see these Chateaus in a free video. Do you think this beats visiting Napa Valley wineries? One thing in Cali’s favour though, you’re not tasting $40 bottles of Cabernet for a $5 or $10 tasting fee. And we do remember the Paris Tasting, both the original and 30th anniversary.

QOTD: it was pretty cool. I enjoyed hearing all that, but I can see why other people thought it was boring. I also couldn’t understand what some of the other people were saying every now and then, but overall it was awesome. Thanks!

    gv,

i once tasted my way thru burgundy and planned on going thru bordeaux afterwards but was wined out after 3 or 4 days and passed on bordeaux and went to paris instead. i have been kicking myself ever since over how i could have passed that up. i shall return… anyway it was very cool taking the virtual bordeaux tour with you to such legendary chateaux. yes audio on the hosts could have been better but i think reasonable considering that you were there for the tastings, as buyer and to build relationships – not to stick cameras and mics in their faces. look forward to pt 2.

I really enjoyed the fact that you didn’t edit this to much. It makes it more real and we get to feel what it is like to be there with you. You looked pretty rough at Chateau Cos D’estourne… late night?

Gary, loved the trip show. I watched it all. And while most probably won’t sit through the whole thing, it is great to see what does happen behind the scenes. For those of us who are passionate about wine – it is very cool.

And kudos for whoever was filming. They did a great job with framing everything and mixing it up with zooms and back again.

The one problem with filming was hearing the interpretation of what was being said. Perhaps add sub-titles next time.

    QOTD: this was great Gary.

  54. May 9, 2007

    Sue Z.

Simply amazing stuff Gary! Thanks for letting us in on your trip. This just might inspire me to get that wristband picture out to you:-) I can’t even imagine what it must feel like to be sipping wine in the heart of Bordeaux and you taste a wine so obnoxious it makes your knees buckle! The tips about the locations of the Chateaues and their proximity to the first growth vineyards alone are priceless. You really rocked it out. Thanks again and again! I can’t wait until tomorrow (and the arrival ‘06 vintage too)!!!

  55. May 9, 2007

    Eric S.

Very cool. Really gives an idea of how special these 05 (and maybe even 06) vintages are. Seeing the look on GV’s face and his reaction when he was at Le Gay was awesome. Can’t wait to see more!

  56. May 9, 2007

    Stéphane

Incredible episode. Very informative in many ways. I wanted to make the same remark as some others: it seems like it would be a great advantage to learn a bit of French for these situations. Even basic pronunciation doesn’t take long to learn…

What a fun time you must have had. Nice show

  58. May 9, 2007

    Ole Ole

Business-like it is, quite a change, not as perky. Haut Brisson: the most fun, bec/ you could do your own blend, very well it seemed. Le Gay was strange, somehow had the feeling that your host was testing you or maybe he’s nervous. (If so, then the corked bottle did not much to worsen that.) But surely more organized than Haut Brisson, and as such, too bad, more boring. Margaux, D’Estournel and HSL were more boring yet, too much of the action between the ears, little on your face, and none in words. All in all, interesting to see once, but not something to come back and watch again for enjoyment.
Tell us more about what you do tell the winemakers, aside from the instant, relatively cautious winetasting comments. And which winery was more fun to visit for you – nevermind the wine ratings for that purpose.

  59. May 9, 2007

I enjoyed the first-hand peek as someone who hasnt made it to bordeaux yet. thought the chance to make your own blend was lots of fun. Its got to be a little tougher to give scores when you are looking the guy who made it right in the eye. Dont envy you that (except in a year like 05 maybe – you get off easy).

    Louisiana George

Enjoyed the episode as something different and an experience we consumers would never get.

Suggestion for your first episode back in the office: tech guys need to edit the video to show your reaction as you tasted each wine, you need to tell us what you were drinking and then we need ratings and current futures prices so we can make decisions on what we are going to buy when we sell our left arm to finance these treasures.

    Louisiana George

Hard to hear, but interesting to see the places I’ve only heard of, and since our trip to France just fell through this will have to do for awhile.
Just read an interesting article in the New York Times Style Magazine for Spring by Harold McGee and Daniel Patterson debunking “terroir”. You don’t have to eat dirt anymore in your palate refining classes.

I now know why we are all asked to identify beyond being “lurkers”, Gary proves his following along with purchase power and then goes on this sick trip through Bordeaux. Awesome experience!
To create your own blend was incredible, then the “first taste”, Margaux, by Cos I was thinking Nic Cage in Leaving Las Vegas. Great to see you are human and not exploding and chipper all the time.
Gary, that was great, looking forward to ep.2.

Wow. I made it through the Ep, and it was worth it- a little change of format from the usual. Obviously 2005 is STUPID obnoxious, and the prices will reflect that, but 2006 seems to have a few stellar wines, if mostly a bit more muscular. Maybe a few values in ‘06 with a little less elegance of ‘05?

  78. May 10, 2007

This IS what it’s all about as far as wine goes. Thanks for this GV. I enjoyed it and I’m feelin the excitement of you swirling that wine.

Maybe…setting up the table and Eric in the tasting room at Ch Margeau and pulling out the JETS bucket…and going through the drill complete with a score would have been fun.

    Hi GV

WOW, what a great episode. As someone who loves to visit wineries, this is a virtual dream. Getting the one on one with I assume in a couple of cases was the winemakers, or even the owners is just priceless. I am impressed that you don’t take any notes, I am always scribbling furiously when I visit wineries, and then spend some days after my trip deciphering my notes. I am really excited about the 2005 and 2006 vintages, they sound fantastic.

My only complaint about the episode, and it is a small semantic one, it was hard to follow what wines i.e. vintage you were drinking sometimes.

    Take it easy

QOTD: LOVE the episode, still watching. It’s a nice behind the scenes look and Gary asks some great questions. I can see why some people may not like it, they want the high energy of the regular WLTV, but it’s a great job by all and I can’t wait for Part 2!

QOTD: interesting stuff, for sure. The bordeaux insider wine talk is impressive…

    MikeyB

I liked it, but would have also liked to see a lot more of your candid assessments after you visited each winery. Would have liked to hear what you bought and how much, if people were cool or stuffy jerks, etc. In short, more of Gary being Gary.

  84. May 10, 2007

    Brad Coelho

Loved it…interesting blending session; one of the most maddening but creative aspects of winemaking. Le Gay treated you well, must have been the praise of the 04 on WLTV that opened the flood gates ;)
Tell Prats of Cos D’Estournel not to flatter himself, his 06 is not an aston martin!

  85. May 10, 2007

Really enjoyed the episode. Certianly a drastic difference from the ‘normal’ animated and overflowing Gary. It was good to see, though, and changed things up a bit. I find myself trying to read his facial expressions to see what he thinks about the wine he’s tasting, as it’s a lot less obvious than usual!

I’ve got to tell you, after watching this I’m not exactly chomping at the bit to visit these places. Spectacular wine, spectacular land, spectacular architecture – bone dry personalities. These guys need to watch the episode on wine being fun. Some more than others, obviously, and I realize this is a business setting at some of the more prestigious chateaus. But still, a lot of really tight ties and suits.

That said, I’d still love to go. Looking forward to pt. deux!

I am thorougly jealous now. What a great opportunity. Knowing how serious the folks in France are about wine I understand no quips from GaryV. Interesting combination you made. Was at Chateau Bresson. Was it based on your tasing of the different components or did you just wing it? If you videoed everything you wouldn’t have needed any tasting notes just replay the video and there they are. I would love to do this same type of tour but without the “in” to the retail market doubt I would even come close to your experiences. Kudos and keep the videos coming from the Bordeaux trip.

  89. May 10, 2007

    Karl B.

Absolutely GREAT STUFF! Fabulous perspective on the smaller producers and the second wines. Also interesting to watch the interaction when the wines are very good versus others. Will you be running futures on 2006?

  90. May 10, 2007

    ChrisR

Wow Gary… wow. I love this video. They let you make your own blend! And now I’m getting really excited about the ‘06 vintage. Did I say WOW!?

  91. May 10, 2007

    thescrewcap

Very cool to see this. You definitely have an amazing job. Just seeing those wines lined up on the table. Wow. I agree with the editing comments, could have been paired down quite a bit and had the same general feel. I also think you could get a better on-camera mic (there are some decent options that wouldn’t be obtrusive) and bring along a small tripod for the outside shots. These are nitpicky points, though; a fantastic diary of your trip. Beautiful scenery, cool seeing inside the tasting rooms and cellars. It’s interesting to see how closed the winemakers/chateaux owners are, it’s like no one wants to really show their hand. I’m sure there is some awkwardness bringing a camera along on a winebuying expedition. I agree some French language would do you wonders. Great stuff, thanks for sharing.

  92. May 10, 2007

    Freddy

great episode. loved to see the barrel rooms, scenery, vineyards, adn the chateaus. would have liked to see little captions or introductions to the different people you met at the different places so we can place a name to the face, see their relationship to the winery, etc. can’t wait for part 2.

  93. May 10, 2007

    Winodontist

    GV,
Very nice to see such an insiders view of those Chateaus. Margeaux looked magnificent, but I’m sure very snooty to a simple American like me.
Much more tame than your typical episode, but did anyone really think you were going to put on your best New Jersey frat boy attitude while tasting the best wines in Bordeaux??
At La Gay, how the hell did you even taste the wine after 15 bottles? I would kill to do a vertical like you did! It would make it easier to understand why the 2000 and 2005 are superior, without a comparison I just have to take it on faith.
Thanks for the great view and insights.

  94. May 10, 2007

    dublin

Love going to France, watching this just fuels the fire. Seeing the actuall vineyard feild of Petrus was pretty special. Can’t believe you tasted at Margaux, wow, RP gave them the best rating of lot for 2005. You just tasted a probable 100 wine!

  95. May 10, 2007

    Kelldey

Wow, what an awesome ep! I may have to convince Mr. Kelldey that we need to go to France on our next European adventure.

Great job, and the editing was fine. You’re not competing for an Oscar, for God’s sake! I thought it was great that we got to see you as your professional self. Very cool and realistic.

    Eagerly anticipating Parte Deux!

Very interesting, looks like 2005 Bordeaux has the quality to support the hype.
Nicely done Gary, looked like an enjoyable trip.

I was interested in hearing what the host from Le Gay was saying about the berry selection for his Le Volante(sp?) 2006. He said it was a single berry selection but there was something else he was following up with that I couldn’t catch. What would be the price/bottle for this label and are you bringing some to the store?

Hey, do the same for Burgundy…and invite me along (I can speak some French ;)

VERY VERY COOL!!! Thanks for the behind the scenes. It’s like I took a time machine back to episode 1 though… You were too well behaved Gary!!!

I would have liked to see you convince one of the “suits” to sport a wristband or a t-shirt just for kicks and giggles;-)

Interresting! making your own blend! I want to do that. A pity the female at haut brisson was so quiet, couldn’t hear what she said. At Chateau Margaux I really miss the “BRINGING THE THUNDERRR, BABY” would have loved to se his face, he seemed quite a relaxed person, no?
    Longing for the next one

How about a directional mic with a little bit of volume? Could barely hear anything.

    Gary/anyone else,

    Great episode!

What was the name of the 2005 wine that you liked at the tasting at Le Gay (not the 2005 Le Gay)? I could not figure out the name. I think it started with an “M”.

    Thanks.

Great Episode. I enjoy learning about the places that wine comes from. It gives me some context when I am enjoying them. Though it took me two days to watch because the first time I only got halfway through before the connection gave up entirely.

Great episode. You must go back to try more of the ‘06 in a year or so. If you want company, I’d be happy to volunteer!

Finally sitting down to watch this… I didn’t expect to enjoy it anywhere as much I did. Fantastic! Thank you so much for doing this. Also, thanks to your cameraman for setting up the various shots outside, as well. Very different, but good all the same. Looking forward to watching part II later tonight.

Also, to chime in with Colleen, if you decide you need a chaperon next year, I’m probably free. I can speak a couple dozen lines of French (all with a fantastic American tourist accent) and look great in a beret…

#s 234 & 235 will take me at least 4 days to get through because of the length.

Gary, been waiting for your Bordeaux episodes for weeks now, glad to see its finally here. Nice tour of the chateaus. Like some comments, listening it through headphones certainly helped. Even then sometimes it was very hard to pick up what was being said even for someone who is resonably familiar with the French accent.

Suggestion (for the future), would be great if you could either include a quick summary after each Chateau, run through some of the wines and your comments. Eg: At le Gay, I couldnt catch the other wines apart from Montviel and Le Gay itself. Alternatively you could devote a future episode to summarise both episodes and draw the highlights and lowlights together.
thanks for the insight, will watch episode 2 tomorrow

oops, I accidentally put this on the other one

QOTD: I love how you ran around looking for a spit bucket at Margeaux and ended up spitting in the sink. I like the fancy title screens. Someone did a really nice job on those. …heh, you’re lookin’ a little chubby (and shaggy) in the Cos d’Estournel segment (interior portion). Maybe it’s the turtleneck… or the video quality… or both. No worries though: you’ve already made sure that we all know you look better in person than on the videos. :P ;)

Gary incredible insight to your trip. Thankyou for this, very good. I took me a couple of days to free up the time to watch, and it is great. I’m on too #2. That had to be an unbelievable trip great show…

Fascinating episode, and I’m impressed with the production value. The poster who suggested a soundtrack reminds me of an executive producer from bad network television – don’t do it. More commenting from you would have been welcome, but I love the verité aspect also. Well done.

Thanks for the inside info Garry. Very nice ep. Even almost documentary. Should do that more often. This is what people really need. Smh behind the scenes, instead of all the ‘usual talk’.

First off, I’d like to say this was an awesome episode, but then again, from what I’ve started seeing, there aren’t really any bad ones. This is my first post, just came across you three days ago, and I’ve managed to spend all three nights up till 5am (EST) watching you, all the while knowing that I should be in bed as I have to work. My question to you is (which I believe should probably be in the question section), are the ‘05 Bordeaux Premier Cru’s (in your professional opinion) something worth buying for a normal consumer of wine (not a collector), or am I better off taking advantage of the excellent vintage on the whole, by getting some values from the second and third growths? (I can dream about Petrus, Le Pin and D’Yquem, but thats about as far as I get)
Thanks and keep up the great work!

Started watching WLTV after this episode, so I’m only seeing it for the first time now.

What a great job you have Gary. It’s interesting to see the process of how wines actually make it to the shelf. One suggestion: next time, mike up all the people speaking – it was really hard to hear what was being said. Otherwise, great episode.

    Sgt Vino

Very informative. Would have been better had the sound quality been higher, but that would be tough. It is interesting to see the different styles of the different chateaus and winemakers/directors. It would be cool to see a wine buying trip to other areas as well (Cali, Spain, etc.)

    CUSE WINO

You look like you have a very tough job.

Very interesting to hear how the wineries talk about their wines and their land. They take great pride in both.

SOund quality definitely leaves something to be desired. One more set of lav mic’s would have improved the show greatly. Remember, Eric Anderson Productions is right around the corner if you need things shot. Will work for wine!!!!!!!

Awesome episode – I’m looking forward to part 2!! It was really cool to see how close the vineyards are together. But I wonder if Gary thinks Petrus is a better wine than Le Gay. Not qpr wise – but just overall if it’s better.

Gary – Wonderful episode. I love those behind the scenes kind of shows. Its always interesting to hear and see the passion these winemakers put into their wines.
