Man that Albarino looks good… I love that whole lemon lime sharp thang.

This is the second time you have reviewed the Nora; you gave it a 90 last time with a similar review. The first albarino I ever tried (over 10 yrs ago) was Martin Codax Albarino; I’ve never found it again! Have you heard of it?

Thanks for the intro to abarino. I will have to try to find some stone apple razor babies for myself.

Since there is no question of the day, I will ask one. Is mouvedre (montastrell) a noble grape capable of greatness outside of Chateau Beaucastle or is it just a fun grape from Spain? I have really enjoyed the Spanish efforts (except the m3) at the lower price points but wonder if there are any really great ones.

Since one of my sisters is named Nora, I already got the wine for her several months ago. Loved it and reviewed it on my site. Albarino is a great indigenous grape.

  40. May 23, 2007

    amgryger

My first introduction to Albarino was with the 2005 Vionta, which I picked up because I kind of have a thing for lesser known varietals, and enjoyed it more than I had enjoyed a white in a while. Possibly more importantly, the night I opened it, I was kind of distracted and forgot that whites are “supposed to be chilled.” That was a revelation in itself.

Okay, so this has nothing to do with today’s WLTV but I have an idea. We’ve all seen the WWJD bracelets and the Lance Armstrong/Darfur/Whateverelse rubber bands, right. Here’s my idea: a purple rubber band with “WWGD” (what would Gary do?) on one side and “Drink some goddamn wine!” on the other. That way if I was ever at a restaurant or bar and wondered if I should spring for just one more bottle of Insignia, I could just look at my wrist and see it…”Drink some goddamn wine!”

    Keep it going!

Gary, speaking of outside the box, I had a French Colombard from McNab Ridge winery. Very refreshing on warm day.

Btw, if you like eating lemons, try chopping up a couple of thin lemon slices with the rind still attached and adding it to a salad.

    Clifford James

    Hey Gary!

    Bulljunk? Hahaha

Yeah, I admit I am still a red fan, having been let down by the whites I’ve tried; the feeling was like this: “Hmm, interesting, but it just doesn’t captivate me as much as the reds I love.”

I’ll keep trying, though, becuase you’ve definitely helped me out of my Cab rut, so there may be hope for whites! I have been trusting your palate since starting to watch and both Darcey and I are INCREDIBLY thankful that our palates/tastes are so similar to yours; we like what you have recommended (of what we’ve tried, of course) so much so, that, again, maybe it’s time to give more whites a try, esepcially as it gets warmer.

Thanks again for what you are doing here! I actually really freakin’ appreciate it, yup to the point of being more effusive than perhaps is prudent. But hey, you deserve the kudos. I still LOVE going back and watching your early episodes where you are so polite and proper, hahaha, except suddenly when you drink something you don’t like, then you almost want to apologize, but even back then you NEVER did (I remember that Yellow Tail Shiraz episode … hahaha); THAT is what integrity is, and I’ve been watching closely, and you simply don’t falter (and I sometimes wonder if you will when the winemaker is sitting right there with you, but even then, nope).

So, Dude, keep it up, keep it real (which keeps me a fan), and thanks for making us all feel so included! I do think we are changing the wine world!

At least! you present a not very common varietal that I can say that I have tried MANY times in my time, however, I had no idea that there is an Albariño that is NOT produced in Galicia (Spain). At any rate, THANKS for another great show. God bless. I need to try that Albariño from Napa.

I’m going to enjoy the recap shows on iTunes. I don’t have time to watch WLTV every day, but I do listen to my iPod for two hours a day while I’m commuting to and from NYC.

Just tried a vouvray last night and loved it. Gonna have to get one of those albarinos now. What happened to the question of the day? also, the technical answer to your question could be: my name backwards

  53. May 23, 2007

    Bossman

Okay, okay, I’ll bite (again), I threw a Napa into the cart for the next time I order but you had better be working out with the thumb if history is any indication.

Completely unrelated my musings on the countdown of days(I have too much time on my hands):

On January 4th Episode #159 the magic number was 227

after several shows without the number it reappeared in episode
    #168(on January 17th as 224) a slippage of 10 days. It’s been
    consistent from that point on.

So it appears it’s not a static date but something being scheduled that
was firmed up between those two dates.

By my calculations the date will be Wed August 29th.

    That rules out:

Leon Washington turning 25 years old on Aug 29

The anniversary of Chad being named starting quarterback in 2006

There is a Jets preseason game with Philly but that’s not until 8/30
and I’m guessing the schedule was established long before then.

Movies are typically released on Fridays, that being said I checked a
number of movie databases and there are no Wrestling or action figure
related movies(or any movies for that matter) slated for release on that date (Transformers is slated for July 4th).

Record releases in the US are on Tuesdays (Is Lionel Ritchie or Pat
    Benatar due?)

The Vayniac tshirt concert prize is a “three day weekend”

As for wine events all I found was:

    http://www.nywcc.com/learn/program_schedule11.php

    Class: Personal Winemaking 102
    Date: Wednesday, August 29 , 2007
    Time: 6:00 – 8:30 pm
    Cost: $40.00
    Instructor: Jan Klapetzky
    Location: Educational Theater
This course will assume students are familiar with the basic
principles of winemaking covered in the Personal Winemaking
101 course. The course will cover working with grapes,
fermentation on the skins, acid testing and chemical acid
adjustment, malolactic fermentation and testing by chromatography,
testing S02, sparkling wine and fruit wines. Wine samples
illustrating the various grape and process differences will be
    provided.

Instructor Jan Klapetzky has received 21 gold medals in state and national
competitions including a best of show in an American Wine Society national
competition. He’s a member of the American Wine Society and a past Chairman
    of the Rochester chapter.

    http://www.mirbeau.com/dining_event_winedinner_schedule.html

    August 29
    New Zealand Wine Dinner
While New Zealand is most famous for its world-renowned and utterly
distinctive Sauvignon Blanc, especially from Marlborough, it has far more to offer from a wide variety of white and red grapes. In fact the New Zealand wine industry is characterized by diversity and innovation, and the excitement this generates is palpable.

The largest single reason for the excitement is the limestone-based
soil. In New Zealand, limestone soils that also occur in areas climatically suitable for grapes are extremely rare. Limestone may have different characteristics to that found in Burgundy.

So unless Gary plans to be in upstate NY (Skaneateles or Canandaigua)
    on that day I’m stumped.

The key to this conundrum must be the significance of the 80+30+10=242
equation on the white board in episode #160 on Jan 5th.

On another totally matter, if you want an out of body experience, go to the
archives and start all shows on the page simultaneously, WOW!!!!! Almost as wild as that day in 1973 we shut out the lights, tied a series of knots knots down the length of a dry cleaning bag, suspended it from the ceiling, lit it from the bottom and watched fire drip onto a piece of aluminum foil. We were so transfixed we almost burned my buddy’s house down to the ground as the flame made it’s way to the ceiling(of course back then the drink of choice was Boone’s farm and I vaguely recall some funny pungent little cigarettes being involved.)
    Groovy.

this is another reason why i love wltv. you can take a grape that i’ve never heard of and make me wanna go out and try it immediately. i’ve been looking for more whites to drink (and to help get my girlfriend into wine), and i think the albarino might be a nice step. but then again..that’s all in a days work for you. Keep up the great work big man.

White fan here, not a red fan. Albarino’s don’t show up around my town, so I guess a trip to New Orleans is in the cards.

Hey G, good call on the albarino, I love that with some serrano ham and manchego cheese, serious tapas heaven. Albarino is also really good with, get this, bagel, lox and cream cheese, no joke! The store was awesome btw. It’s great to be in the NY/NJ area, I miss this weather, the LV desert sucks.

    Gary,
What’s up with the price of these Albarino’s? Seems like just yesterday they were selling at the $10 – $12 price point. These prices plus some of the inflated scores I’ve seen lately smells like cat pee. In general, I have been supportive of your stewardship of the Wine Library’s customers and our best interests, but ……. something here is amiss.

  68. May 24, 2007

Like the Nora OK, but I love the Pazo de Senorans, and have for years. I can’t agree with your conclusion. This is a terrific white wine which blows away all those NZ Sauv Blancs and even some Chablis. It’s also a favorite among guests and at a tasting of 20 wine enthusiasts last year. Great complexity, meatiness and food-friendliness. I thought the 92 was a bit on the high side, but this is an outstanding bottle of wine. I am sad that the price broke the $15 barrier.

I know little about any other wines other than Spanish, mostly in deference to my mother being Spanish. I have been drinking albarinos here and over there for the better part of 10 years, and they have always been priced higher than other whites. Perhaps they truly are rising now more than before, but I actually think that the Nora is still one of the lowest priced albarinos that I have seen in a long, long time.

  76. May 24, 2007

That was interesting to learn that Albarino is one of the grapes used to make Vihno Verde. I’ve had a Vihno Verde and really enjoyed it. Unfortunately, the wine store I get most of my wine from is currently out! :(

Here’s a link for the 411 on Albarino:

Hi all! Most of the albarinos I’ve had so far are very good. Many of the ones I prefer are aged ’sur lie’ where they tend to have a fuller body and more intense flavors. Try the Do Zoe Albarino ‘05 and ‘06. The 05 is a little smokey with apricot and peach flavors. To me, the ‘06 doen’t have the smokiness and it has more peach flavors with apricot accents.

Agh…first time posting here, I thought I would try to come in and type Vaynerchuk backwards, but I see I was beat to it by the posee. In any case, I started watching this a short while ago, I am about ten episodes in and I know that is nothing compared to the entire archive you have here, but I have to say I am loving the show. I am new to wines to, so I really do not know squat, needless to say I am getting schooled here real nicely…

  85. May 24, 2007

    JayZee

Excellent episode. To be honest, these are the types of episodes I love on WLTV – featuring a slightly different varietal (not the common 5 reds and whites) or wine region. Most excellent, my friend. But wait! No QOTD? Oh, I see Jen asked one earlier in the comment list. Okay, let’s see, a wine that brought tears to my eyes – the Gruet sparkling wine that we used for the toast at my wedding. And it wasn’t because of the quality or lack thereof of the wine. ;-)

  86. May 24, 2007

    JOEinLA

Nice switch from the usual white suspects~

    QOTD from Jen

….2003 Beaujolais Nouveau in Paris. 7:00 in the morning, thanksgiving week, my first time in Paris, off the plane and my hotel wasn’t ready for me. I dropped my bags there and walked until I stumbled across an outdoors Farmer’s Market setting up for the Saturday Morning. All French farmers. After several minutes of me mumbling and stumbling around it, a 23 year old English speaking French girl took me under her wing and brought me to each vendor, introducing me. By the end of the row of vendors, I was eating a freshly made, steaming hot… Ham and Cheese Crepe… ( REAL Ham and REAL French cheese). 8 am in the 40 degree weather with my new girl of my dreams. Suddenly the Beaujolais Nouveau arrives by truck since it was the third weekend in November (remember?). The old farmers were partying, filling my plastic cup, dinking and beaming toothles smiles and lot’s of bottles. Me, loving the crepe, the smell of the market in the cold air, Paris waking up……and that beautifully thin delicious perfect wine washing it all down!

One of the best experiences in my lifetime.

great episode, but is this grape sweet? is it dry? what up? (not lettin’ go of this issue, my friend!) ;)

Nice ep. Funny, I had just opened a bottle of Nora da Neve 2005, the somewhat more high end cuvee. Zingy, lot of structure (awful lot), falvours of cumquat, passion fruit and lime, great, cross between riesling, viognier and bouboulenc. Love it.

I discovered Albariño a few years ago and it has fast replaced my old friend Pinot Grigio as my hot summer with seafood wine of choice.

    OS,

You can’t search for “shirt”, “tee” works but if it’s the pickle you want, “pickle” will weed out the dead deer (and thankfully doesn’t include any of Gary’s tasting notes…. otherwise we’d be wading through mucho entries). Oddly enough only the Vayniac shirt has “shirt” in the description.

I’d link to it but I don’t want to make assumptions on size lest you decide to sit on or send your big brother after me as the case may be.

OK Bossman, I do agree with you. You have WAY too freakin’ much time on your hands……

Thanks GV for introduction to another wine that I did not know about. I also enjoy the character of the nose on whites. To be honest with you, even though I love red wines most, I find more variety and complexity in the nose on a lot of whites. Not sure if that is my olfactory peculiarity or if that is something others also observe. I am still in a SIWBM, but I have a list of stuff to buy once the embargo is over………including Al-bah-reen-yo.

I don’t think I can remember an episode without a QOTD. Have you slipped a cog?

I love Spanish wines but surprisingly have not had a really good Albariño (only had one or two ever, and both were far too green and acidic). Based on this episode I’ll have to give them another try, although “Razor-sharp” just might be too much for my palate.

We love Albarino and have been drinking it all month. Good to see it finally making headways in the states. Now onto all of Galicia’s other great whites..when is the Godello video coming out? ;)

Bubble Brothers needed an Albariño in the range, and we tasted more than twenty bottles from nearly as many producers. They were all dull, and all too expensive by far. Then the next morning a late arrival turned up, and it was great. So that’s the one we stock. Tamara from Pazo Pondal was twisting my arm for some business last week at the London Wine Fair. It was good to re-taste her wines, but one Albariño’s enough for us at the moment.

OK Gary, I’m crying “Uncle”! This Albarino episode has flushed me out of the bushes. Ive been lurking for over 200 episodes, but albarino is enough to turn any Peeping Tom into a doorbell pusher. My wife(Mrs. Pinot Grigio)flipped out upon tasting a Salneval Albarino. It’s going to come in handy this summer on the Chesapeake Bay. Thanks. Give your teacher sister a big Kudos for me.

    Hi Gary.
Very nice video …. I’m a big fan of Spanish wines.
I enjoyed your albariño tasting, and I am going to search for more tastings of Spanish wines you might have done on you website.
    But ….
I wonder why you didn’t taste the 2006 vintages.
Albariño is a wonderful grape, but the wines you tasted are made for fresh consumption. So I think that if you would have tasted the 2006 you would have been more enthousiastic (still).

Congratulations with this new way of educating us on wine!

first Albarino i tried was called LICIA – same name as my wife. She grabbed it on the way out of a wine store in Rochester, NY. It was killer – refocused my love of white wine. It is the best wine to pear w/ creamy soups.

In my opinion, Albarino and White Rhones are the best white wine on earth….followed by the wines of Loire – then white bordeaux.

I just hat a Pazo Senorans from 2006 yesterday during a wine tasting and found it pretty one-dimentional, although it is very well made. Usually I like the Albarino grape but tis time I kept away from buying the Pazo at a price of 14€. I decided for a Basa Rueda 2007 (Verdejo, Sauvignon, Viura) at a price of 7€ which I liked a lot more.

I actually opened a bottle of the Nora tonight and loved it; then I decided to see if Gary had ever reviewed it. Surprise, surprise: Not only had he reviewed it, he loved it, too. It is exactly as he described it. Definitely give it a try, everyone!

kuhcrenyav – close enough? I needed to know about Albarino to give as a gift and had never heard of it before. Can’t wait to try it myself! Thanks so much for the help. My host apparently loves this wine – now maybe I’ll find the right one in the store – and perhaps won’t sound like a complete idiot when I mention or talk about it ! Thanks for the great help ! PS if you send a shirt – pls send a large and I’ll give it to my host. Thanks again! A
