I’ve been robbed, I logged on and there were no comments, nor anyway to leave one.

I emailed Gary and rec’d an out of the office message (June 15th? without warning us?).

Well maybe Brandon and Bobby got my email before Kent posted.

C’est la vie, the days are warm but the night’s are still chilly.

Nothing’s holding me back from the pink! I love it! Just had some last weekend, maybe I’ll have another this weekend. Can’t top it for pure refreshing fun.

And I LOVE the shirt, ha! That was a classic line.

Another Mind expanding episode. Dispelling the myth that all pink stuff is junk. Will have to try some.

i’m bringing out the roses this weekend. mainly from Languedoc/Roussillon (the area that first got me interested in the pink). thanks for the episode. the Loan Ravins sounded interesting to me.

I’m sitting on the deck of my soldier boyfriend’s apt. by Fort Benning drinking some local stuff – Chestatee Rose by Three Sisters Winery in Dahlonega.
Owner Sharon Paul sold me on it when I visited the winery yesterday – a mix of Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, Cab Franc and Merlot.
Cab Franc Rose is like my boyfriend, big and burly soldier man, but with a soft spot in his heart for lil’ ole’ me. I can still smell you, burly cab franc, but you’re all hugs and kisses for me today!

Everybody thank a soldier this weekend!

Well Gary… no, I’m certainly not afraid of “the pink”… Rosé on the other hand, I dunno. I guess there’s that whole stigma associated with white zin. that we’re all a bit afraid of. However, with expanding my pallet in mind, I purchased some French Rosé just the other day. I will give it a shot in the next week or so!

Hooray, I was the first to answer! So exciting!

I can’t say I’ve ever had a rose. Because pink scares me. I do like that roses tend to be cheaper though, so it’s only a matter of time before this weak will of mine gives in…

How prophetic am I? Last show, I mentioned that this was the summer of the rosé, and then out you come with a rosé show. I think you owe me some money or something.

I have had the Guigal and I would describe the finish as “astingent”–like liking the floor of a hospital examination room (not fun, but sometimes you have no choice).

Stick to rosés from Tavel, Costières de Nîmes, or Provence.

The only “pink” that I have had have been really sweet fruity wines that I wasn’t a huge fan of. So, not knowing what was what has been the biggest thing holding me back from trying any new ones!

Right on breaking out the Copain! However…my ABSOLUTE favorite Rosé is Domaine de la Mordoreé, both the CDR and the Tavel…for 14 bucks…fantastic. Also the Pibarnon and Tempier are interesting wines…

Just for info – (sorry I feel like the only one caring about and/or mentioning your French Pronouncation issues…)

Pronouciation wise: Copain = Ko Pahn (more or less)
Le Printemps = Lu Pron ton

And the accent…somewhere between Bergen and Union Counties?

We drink lots of rose here in Holland in the summertime, i,m actually just finishing a bottle of Bullas 2004 (spain) tht we opened yesterday on the beach ;-) It,s one of the nicer supermarket roses.

    Sensei,

Have a great time in LA, who will play you in the movie? Would be great QOTD and would bring some interesting answers…..maybe a young howie mandel, when he still had hair…:)

True, am little afraid of the pink and it does come from the white zins my Mom always drank out of a box! Promise to try a dry one but I agree with others…you have to do better than hit 25% with the pinks. You might have to do another episode and find us a couple more winners. 1 out of the 4 was not great…

Hope everybody has a great holiday weekend…pop the cork on a nice bottle and toast our fallen soldiers!! We are Lucky!

Ep 226? Just guessing here. I do remember the cherry/venison reference.

QOTD: California Rose I have enjoyed: Cuvaison Vin Gris, Flora Springs Rosato & Lazy Creek to name a few and a whole bunch of French ones whose names I can’t recall in the 9.00 to 12.00 price range. Nothing wrong with Rose on a hot summer day. Nothing wrong with Blanc De Noir sparkiling either.

This was definitely an episode filled with ups and downs, man. I was pretty excited during your intro to discover Rosé, then completely let down by the first few wines you tasted, then brought back up again by your excitement over the final wine. Looks like I might need to get myself a bottle of Copain for this weekend and showcase the pink proudly.

A(nswer)otD: Dude!?! What holds me back? It’s pink!!! I can’t drink that and be taken seriously! Or can I?

QOD.You said it yourself. They just dont “bring it”.With all the great alsace, albarino,pg, nz sb,loire. Why bother? It’s like everyone is trying to atone for wz.Who cares if a shameless sweet wine is what rose means to 99% of the wine drinking public? Has Roger Godell gotten ahold of the wine media and forced everyone to make good on this decades old travesty.Every wine publication and media outlet seems to be shoving this “new concept” of pink wine down my throat! I’ve had a fair share of rosee and my conclusion is much like this episode. One out of several are decent.VERY hit & miss.My fear of rose is “why is it being so heavily promoted lately”.Wharehouses full of the stuff?Wineries looking to make some $$ off of run off? All said ,I will try and find the Copain!!

Too bad the Spanish rosé wasn’t a winner. I’m really liking the Spanish wines I’ve had recently (a great 2002 Viña Real Crianza last night!) Does anyone have a recommendation for an enjoyable Spanish rosé?

QOTD: What makes me leary of rosé is the fear that I’ll taste something like white Zinfandel :( I had a Malbec rosé lately that was dry and delicious. If I could find more like that I’d be happy!

So I’ve always enjoyed the pink stuff, but more so in the sparkling world. I feel rose sparkling wine adds another level of complexity to this already great genre.

I have some pinks the cellar and will be sure to open a couple this summer.

    No holding back here.

Great episode! love dry rose. Became unafraid about 2 years ago visiting Santa Monica Ca. sitting in The Lobster on Ocean Ave overlooking the pacific and the pier my brother inlaw ordered a bottle of Comander Parysal(butchered the spelling)just great with their signature dish a 2.5 lb olive oil marinated grilled lobster been hooked since. Nothing better for summer drinking.

  44. May 25, 2007

QOD: the fact that you didn’t do this show a few months ago before it got too hot to ship so I could grab some of that Copain for the summer … picked up a bunch last year and they were somewhat hit or miss–one of them even had Tannat in it! But the Chateau Guiot was definitely a keeper–creamy strawberry nose but still honestly dry. Something for everyone.

Tipcee: slightly chilled and you should be fine.

Didn’t you already say it? A-R-O-M-A-T-I-C-S

Gary , we have always loved the pink stuff.. Found wine by drinking Glen Ellen white zinfadel and went there on our honeymoon. We found in Napa & Sonoma the world of wine. Thank you for the great ROSE …..

QOTD: Nothing! Rosé isn’t my favorite wine, but it’s great for the summer and ever since I had a 100% Cab. Franc Rosé I became a believer.

  48. May 25, 2007

    ChrisR

Excellent episode but you illustrated why I often shy away from Rose. 3 out of the 4 you tasted were passzzzesssz. I’ve been burned by too many bad roses. When its good, its lovely and I really enjoy it, but I never know what to buy. Even decent ratings for Roses seem to be a bad barometer – Look at Jay Miller’s praise for one that you rejected. (By the way, Jay Miller is great but I fear he is too enthusiastic. I never agree with every critic, but I’ve recently stumbled on too much desparity from Miller and I’m starting to not trust in his ratings. Gary V, Parker, Tanzer and Wine Spectator are true and true. I mean that sincerely. I think those 4 are the only ones I can still trust.

Anyway, thanks again for finding a good Rose in the bunch. I’ll try it for sure. I’m not afraid of the pink, I’m just afraid of wasting money on bad wine.

PS…BANFI’S ROSA REGALE is the bomb!! That’s the best pink I’ve ever tasted on the planet. It is sooooooo good and delicious and refreshing and ocean breeze, raspberry and roses that I could drink it everyday like water. With only 7% alcohol, you almost could.

Love those T-Shirts….tell me you ship to Canada!!!
QOTD – I was in the Languadoc last year and fell in love with some of these wines but have been underwhelmed by some of the crap rose that is coming out of Ontario….I need to look elsewhere as we just don’t get enough of these through our Licqour control board.

  50. May 25, 2007

Gary, Prentemps is Spring, not summer! Summer is L’ete.
QOTD: Like everyone else- generally they taste like s@#t.

  51. May 25, 2007

    Here’s my $.04 worth.

3 passzzzez out of 4, and you’re wondering why we as a collective group are afraid of the pink? If excitement to the pink is to found out there, then stack the lineup on a show with rose that you’ve liked before. Also, rose is not so easy to find, especially in the barren wine markets of Maine. Up here it seems that half the shelf space is devoted to jugs and boxes. The vendors that actually stock quality wines are few and far between, and the selection is limited due to the few consumers up here too. Sigh. I’m moving to Springfield, NJ. I’m almost willing to bet that the population of your county is close to the entire population of the State of Maine.

A good presentation nonetheless. However, I am still afraid of the pink.

I have yet to find one I like. If I want something refreshing for the summer I’ll stick with Pinot Grigio or a nice Riesling Kabinet

QOTD: Not afraid of the pink. As a matter of fact the Pink Panther was my favorite cartoon character! Banfi Rose Regale – absolutely marvelous.

QOTD: I am afraid of the pink, because it is pink. 80% of my wadrobe is black. However, because Im a sucker for nebbiolo I’ve been tempted to try this one, “”Il Mimo” Nebbiolo Rosato, Cantalupo.” Anyone ever have it?

QOTD: What’s been holding me back is the whole idea that rose is a “pink girlie wine,” and I’m not that kinda girl. But hey, rose got a huge article in Wine Spectator, and now Gary’s telling me not to fear the rose, I’m gonna give it a whirl.

Long overdue and awaited episode. In fact, do another one on rose. There are so many; many of them tight on the nose. They pair great with asparagus (and mayo or blue cheese dressing), and/or artichokes. Pair well with most salads in fact. Pairs well with lobster. Gary, don’t take long before doing another episode on rose.

  61. May 25, 2007

How can anyone be afraid of pink? I like the Kosta Browne Pinot Rose. Nice. And let’s not know the white zinfandel. Yes it is sweet and tastes like strawberry cotton candy – but it is a way to introduce people to wine beyond wine boxes or sangria or wine coolers.
QOTD – Very few GOOD pink wines make it to the shelves near me. Tavel? faggetabout it. The only pink I ever see is candied mass produced stuff. Or high end (did someone say Expen$ive) Champagne.

  62. May 25, 2007

What holds me back is I don’t have a ton of money so when I go buy something, I usually stick to what I know because i hate dropping 20 or 30 bucks on a bottle of something and not even being able to drink it. I’ve seen a pink sangiovese around that really intrigues me. I think i’ll have to go get it this weekend. Thanks for trying to get all of us to expand our horizons. I wish you would’ve gotten into what a rose wine is. How it’s made differently from reds and whites. I think alot less people would be leary of them if they knew they where made from the grape varieties that they already drink.

  63. May 25, 2007

    KenP

    GV,
    What, no Tavel? And Provence?
‘Printemps’ means springtime, ‘ete’ is summer, BTW. (I have to figure out how to add accents.) And Spanish Roses, I’ve heard they are often blends of white and red wines. Wouldn’t doubt Las Rocas does this.
    Good ep. Love the pink.

Just coming to your defense here GV, but some were writing in their comments about how you don’t pronounce French words properly. But in doing so they spelled PRONUNCIATION wrong 2 times. Maybe that’s like the pot calling the kettle black!

I’m afraid of rose wines because many years ago when I first started drinking wine I was given a really tasty rose that came in a really big bottle and it made me physically ill, not just for 10 or 15 minutes, but for hours. It happened twice and now I approach rose with extreme caution.

  71. May 26, 2007

    Trish da' Dish

I’m not exactly “skeered” of the pink…what often holds me back is what you just illustrated on your show. The pink, for me, is riskier on the wallet than the red and the white. I don’t buy Roses unless I’ve tried them, or someone who I trust has. Even if a lot of Roses are affordably priced, I am just too cheap to fly blind and risk repeatedly throwing out 3/4 bottles (like you essentially just did, G-Man! :-)

QOTD: I’m with Trish da Dish…every once in awhile you may come across a nice crisp dry Rose…and then maybe forget about the 10 before that that were junk.

I think that’s why Spectator and Parker and now GV’s reviews are so welcome…because you’re not “flying blind” anymore. At least SOMEOne had the wine and threw some opinion in to the mix….

I’ll take Northern italian whites any day for summer..Alto Adige…!

I think my laptop’s LCD screen is on the way out– it looks like all of today’s wines are PINK!!

QOTD: What am I afraid of? The sugar monster and his science-project friend Dr. Chemicals. That’s what I’ve experienced with a couple of the Rose wines that I’ve had in the past. However, as always, I’ll continue my quest to never buy the same wine twice until I’ve tried everything…even a GOOD Rose (I know their out there- maybe the Mulderbosch 2006 Rose of Cabernet Sauvignon??

QOTD: I can’t say I’ve ever had a rosé that I liked besides rosé champagne (i’ve never actually tried white zin). That’s probably what’s holding me back from trying more. The failure rate is just too high. Living in the Anjou for 4 months has also kind of traumatized me.

I like rose wines…but I do agree that with another comment – talking about how they are made. What makes them rose’s or what the difference between a rose and blush wine is. Are some made by blending white wine and red or just the skin to juice contact. Blends or straight up one grape type…so many things to know.
I try anything so nothing holds me back…except a bad review.

QOTD – not afraid at all, been drinking some serious Spanish Rosados for the last year thanks to the Wine Warehouse down the road from me. Unfortunately for most of you it’s in the U.K. (Spanish Spirit, if you’re in the UK check it out at http://www.spanishspirit.com ). One of their best is the Vidal del Saz, http://www.bodegasdelsaz.com – if you can find it in the USA buy it (as long as you like dry, berry-laden Pinks).

I drink rose all the time, but I could of told you in advance about the Las Rocas, I wouldn’t cook with it. If you want a rose a man could get into, do 1+1=3 Rose imported by Aurelio Cabestreros, its got a lot of good ratings and awards. Huge nose and finish.

BTW: All Europeans drink rose in the summertime by the jug fulls, there are other wines other than big california cabs out there in the world.

    QOTD:

Unfortunately If I am being honest … I have never tried Rose because of the perception it has. Looks like a Wine Cooler, most people say the taste is horrible, never had anyone introduce me to a good quality Rose – didn’t know they existed.

But, trying to keep an open mind … and plan on buying a Rose for sampling with my next order! Your fault!!

In the old days I used to find some delightful rose’s from Portugal. Have you checked those out?
It’s true that white zin has become an abomination, but when it was a new kind of wine in the pop market, some makers made a dry style like the european rose’s that were not bad at all.

QOTD Not afraid of pink but drank a lot of Mateus in college (when the corkscrew broke we used a pair of scissors) — remember when it was the expensive wine?

Friend of mine had a wine tasting party for her husband’s birthday – had the 2005 Domaine Tempier Bandol. VERY nice rose. But she also had a Lafitte so who remembered to finish the rose?

Not scared of the pink either. I live in Texas and when it begins to get warm, red’s can feel heavy on a Sunday afternoon. My friend has been drinking rose’s lately so I figured I’d see what it was about (ever trying to expand the pallet). Have come across Belle Glos Pinot Noir Blanc ($17) and Folie a Deux Pink ($9). Both are quite lovely, not too sweet, and leave no ill effects. I’ll be unscrewing the cap on a Montes Rose of Syrah (Chile) for the first time this evening.

I love rosé – whether it’s slightly sweet and fruity or dry. The only thing I am waiting for is warmer weather. Here in the SFBay area, we have had a somewhat cool spring – but come August, I’ll think pink!

QOTD – probably ignorance, not fear. The only rose’s I’ve ever had have been alcoholic Kool-Aid and I just don’t want to drink junk like that. I did not really know that there were pink wines out there that I might enjoy.

  102. May 26, 2007

Not afraid of Rose wines at all. But that is a fairly recent development. I was tasting at a winery (can’t remember which) and they poured me some pink stuff (gasp). Not one to waste, I tried it and (gasp again) didn’t hate it. Since then I’ve had several “pinks” that I found quite decent, and am looking forward to opening the bottle of Mary Elke Rose in the wine fridge.

Just finished a bottle of 2003 David Bruce Petite Sirah – my score: 91, and a bit better than my “house reds”. The very best rose I’ve tasted are as enjoyable as my house wines. I will try the Printemps though. Thanks for the knowledge!

Not much exposure to rose. My parents were big French white and red drinkers in the 70’s and 80’s when I was growing up. Perhaps the light red color somehow sends a message to the brain that it is a “weak” red. Upon tasting, one starts to associate it with a white wine. Serious identity crisis going on here. We need to accept rose as a class of its own. Go pink!

  105. May 27, 2007

    Burton

Has anyone found out how a varital that has dark skins with dark juice can become a white wine???

  106. May 27, 2007

    Dave H

    Burton-

All grape varieties have essentially clear juice. The color of red wines comes from the skins, which are left in during fermentation. White wine-producing varieties tend to have yellow or green skins, but it’s basically irrelevant because the skin is filtered out before fermentation. Pink wines are produced from red varieties by leaving the juice in contact with the skins for a while before filtering them out.

White wine made from red varieties is called “vin gris” because a little bit of dusty pinkness does come through, but they are considerably lighter than normal pink wines.

  107. May 27, 2007

    Burton

There are a few dark skin grapes that have dark juice that are the exception to rule. Alicante Bouschet is one of those. I wasn’t even born in the era GV was referring to with alicante bouschet being popular in a white form. Nothing suprises me when it comes to manipulating “world class” wine…(powdered tannins, reverse osmosis, acidification, chaptisation….). I understand those but not sure about making white wine with red skins and red juice. I hope I can find out.!

  108. May 27, 2007

    Burton

to further elaborate on manipulation because most dont know: powdered artificial tannin, Penfolds Grange; reverse osmosis, certain First Growth Bordeaux; acidification, great german wines in a hot year i.e. 2003; chaptisation, great burgundies when a cool season happens and grapes dont ripen. Dont take me the wrong way. Some wines succeed in difficult vintages but some wineries have to save their ass using “artificial” methods.

I’m a fan of the Provence roses so the Copain is a must buy. Plus, it has the nicest label.

QOTD: If ANYTHING every scared me of the pink stuff would be the infamous Beringer White Zinfandel. And since I have thrown, no, catapulted the monkey off my back (Peyton reference) and tried other roses, that is the only thing that held me back.

you mentioned “sugarfied” in the episode and that leads me to a question I have about wine additives: I was recently told by a winemaker that it’s illegal to chapitalize the wine by adding SUCROSE but is completely legal and, in fact, a somewhat common practice to add FRUCTOSE in the source of concentrated fruit juice. Really, how common is this? and do you think it takes away from the “art” of the craft and the quality of the wine? Also, thoughts on Mega Purple?

  115. May 27, 2007

one of the main reasons i don’t drink the pink stuff is because at the wine store that i worked at when i turned 21, all of the employees were red wine drinkers. i heard nothing really very good about many white wines, and especially nothing good about any pink wines. and i guess their bias has spread t o me. but after that show, i’ll see what i can do about remedying that.

i’ll echo the sentiment of others on the hit & miss problem rose seems to have. i’m not afraid of it at all – i’ve currently got a few bottles of it on hand. but the problem is when i open them, the majority will smell a little fruity and kinda taste like chemicals. i’m sure the great ones are out there…. but they’re not in the stores in my area.

I can’t believe you came out to LA to party, and didn’t even ping me. I’m grieving today (here in sunny Santa Monica).

Definitely not afraid of the pink. Ask my wife. But as for rose, I’ve been meaning to try it. I actually own a 2005 Domaines Ott rose and a 2005 Etude Pinor Noir rose, but I haven’t had occasion yet to bring either one out of the fridge. Looking forward to it soon though.

Love the show. I just hosted a Rose tasting with some friends this weekend. We tried a Coppola Sofia, a Snoqualmie Cirque de Rose, an A to Z Rose from Oregon, St Michelle’s Nellie’s Garden, a Pares Balta and a St Lauren’s Syrah Rose. Being from Washington State you can see my Northwest bias. I tried to get a bunch of die hard Cab drinkers to admit that Rose’s were a nice drink on a nice day on the deck. They didn’t buy it! In fact, with eight of us drinking and six bottles only the St Laurent got finished. In aggregat scoring the A to Z came out on top. Given its good score in the Spectator it wasn’t a surpising outcome. I thought the St Laurent had the best complexity. Anyway, thanks for the great shows and the great inspiration. Keep it up! – Mick Pegg

Gary, I’m sure a BILLION people have already told you by now, but “printemps” is French for “spring” while “ete” is “summer”. Still, nice episode. Too bad only one was worth getting.

Not at all scared on Pinks. Tavel Rose was one of my first tastes of non-Concord Kosher wines. That said I have had lots of bad pinks and am always looking for new ones. I have tried Roses made from almost every red grape. Many don’t cut it. The last one you reviewed sounds like a keeper so I will have to try a three-or 9-pack. At 12 bones not a bad deal at all and great with evening barbecues (well all but the brisket) what was that accent? New Joisey?

Not a big fan of Roses in general, but Jason from the Olney Beer and Wine recommended a sparkling Rose to go with ham for a family dinner and it was a huge hit. I wish I could remember what it was.

QOTD: Well, as I just mentioned, I’m not TOO scared of the pink stuff. But, usually it just reminds me of White Zinfandel. If I wanted Kool-Aid, I’d drink Kool-Aid. :)

I tend to like Roses, but prefer a good white as it seems to have more on the nose and palate than a rose. I will continue to seek out some good roses that can stand up to a nice white.

QOTD — A couple of things — (1) Absolutely the fear that everyone around you thinks you are drinking white zin, and (2) I usually can’t get the aromas or flavors out of the pink stuff like I can with whites…

  140. June 8, 2007

    Sam I

I love the Jose Reyes (Mets) reference but you really should have sung it.

QOD: I’m scared it will be sweet. And if it is, I don’t want my girlfriend liking it then being stuck drinking sweet wines. I don’t have much of sweet tooth to begin with in fact sweets quickly make me feel ill. I know I know that’s strange but I was that kid who’s Halloween candy lasted almost untouched till the next year. I’ll probably pickup the Copain but Gary you’re really tapping me here and I’m also scared about one other thing. That other thing is that I won’t be able to pay my bills if I keep spending money at Wine Library at this rate. I need a frequent buyers card for you… some rewards points or something :)

I noticed the Guigal Cotes du Rhone in the store today, and picked it up. I’m just starting to think about developing my palate, and so I *had* to know if that ‘deadly-chemical’ thing GV mentions would come through for me.

It’s tough. My husband doesn’t love the stuff, so it’s hard to sneak it in. However, I’m always expecting great things from rose and they never seem to deliver. Good example is the first wine tasted…had that a few times, gross. Also, I find the roses have these watery, flabby, flat, sad finishes. It’s like, can you give me some more? Please?! Going to seek out the last rose. Here’s hoping!

QOTD: I’ve found a couple of Rose wines that are pretty good. Fort Ross Rose of Pinot Noir was good. Rose wines don’t tend to be my favorite profile, though. They tend to be a little tight on the nose and a bit unfocused on the palate for me. Maybe I just haven’t had a really good one yet. I try to have one Rose at the table every Thanksgiving, though, just to keep trying. Dry rose does tend to complement turkey nicely.
