Hi Gary! Let’s keep the show the way you have it now, it seems more fun and fair that way, so that no one would accuse you of pushing a particular wine at WL. The idea that you could pazzzzz on a wine immediately available at your store is one reason I stick around for every new episode!

Nice show! and cameo from Dad! that was great. The sugar issue is huge(literally) for me. I watched “Supersize Me” recently and they said the guy ended up going thru “30+ pounds of sugar” in the month he was on the Mac diet.
Shouldn’t we be feeding this to our cars instead of ourselves? I’m not a winemaker but believe sugar in wine(dry reds?) is considered to be a flaw from 1:incomplete or “stuck” fermentation, 2: creation of mannitol(a sugar used to cut street drugs) or 3: “Americanization” of wine(adding sugar)OMG! I don’t like any of these scenarios.

QOTD:I don’t read wine spectator, ethusiast, or wine freak journal, but I do talk to friends and shop owners. They say:”tastes great, excellent, not too sweet, bargain good deal, you’ve got to try this one”. I wish I could taste most wines before buying but obviously can’t so Gary fills this gap… beyond my wildest expectations! These shows have been so much fun I don’t mind being pitched to a little. Also, what’s the sense in hearing about a great wine if you can’t even get it?

QOTD: I would agree with CC and others that have said in one way or another to keep on keeping on, but it is nice to see some of those “themed” episodes like best Merlots under $5.00…ect (haha)

However, I still think the best avenue for your personal tastings outside the show is corkd. That way those that are really interested in what you are drinking with dinner..or breakfast :) can find out and see your notes.

Hey, then maybe once a month you can do something similar to the blogcast that the three wine guys do and just give us a taste of what you are drinking in the real world.

    Stay real! Peace out!

The great thing about this whole thing is that every once in awhile we get a littlittle piece of GV’s life. Today, for example, GV Dad’s call. Over time we’ll get more pieces of the puzzle and a fuller picture will appear. Love it.

QOTD: I love the format of the show, but I think if you changed it up every now and then it would work. Kinda like when the wife gets a new outfit…

QOTD: I agree with your approach about tasting wines that you have not tasted yet. It keeps it new for you as well as entertaining for us. BUT…every now and then I would like to see an episode where you know the wines are good to you for a specific price point or area. You could do an episode where you choose the top 4 best bargain wines or top 4 best wines under $8 or top $40 wine from the Rhone if you wanted to splurge etc etc. To complete these shows you would have to have prior knowledge of the wines before taping.

All of these suggestions aside, you obviously are doing something right because many of us have watched all of the 248 episodes and we continue to watch unless you start to really suck a nut.

    Keep it up, G!

    Gary, nice episode.

I would agree with wtvlurker, the format should stay the same. I love the candid approach and feel to the show. Then throw in an episode every once in a while like the one you did with wines “That Brought The Thunder”…or is that Thunnndaaaarrrr (the barbarian).

    Hope you enjoy the trip.

I’m with wtvlurker. keep this format and stack the deck occassionally. ENJOY VENICE! can’t wait to hear about the italians you’re trying.

    Good ep.
QOTD: I am in agreement with most. The show works better as an exploration of wines than one of straightforward recommendations. Gotta have the pazzzzzz! Maybe every Friday you could discuss both a wine and a food pairing combo. Fire up the hibachi in the parking lot!

Looking back at the episodes already produced, there is a good balance of some themed shows (love the decanting episode), along with plenty of simple “let’s try these new wines together” shows.

My rec is: mix it up as you’ve been doing; crack open some new wines you’ve never tried, but also showcase some favorite bottles and highlight those known deals and picks you have. There’s room for both.

Viewers love the from-the-hip shooting the show provides, but I think we also look to you as an experienced enthusiast who has some good thoughts to impart, and who has tried more wines than most of us.

    Cheers,

QOTD – I really think the surprise element is key to the success of the show. Previously reviewed wines wouldn’t be as interesting and would add some of those pre-conceptions that are part of the UNchanged wine world. There is the possibility that WLTV critics would accuse you of shilling vs. coming in open-minded, too.

Gary, I like the method for the show as is…that is, where you have not yet tried the wines you are about to review. I love the spontaneous and viceral reaction you have when you put that unknown wine into your mouth. Please keep it up!

Once again, marquis phillips sucks. The most heavily overrated wine since Silver Oak,

QOTD: This is not really an answer to your QOTD, but an alternate suggestion. I’m sure I’m not the only one who has been disappointed in a wine which got a very high rating (95+) from WS, RP, et al. Perhaps you could do a show on some of these 95+ and tell us what YOU think. Do they deserve the rating or not?
