Having problems here too. Since WLTV went over to Viddler I have had rotten problems with buffering and Quicktime takes along time to download..
Still worth the effort but would be nice if I could watch as easily as I used to!

Beaujolais in the summer? There’s not much better! Easy drinking, not pretentious, gotta love it!

    quicktime worked fine for me!

    i love tea as well.

before getting into wine, i would spend time tasting and sipping fine oolongs, whites, fruity blacks, anything really. and now that wine is consuming my palate instead of tea, the tea drawer is both jealous and proud to have prepared my taste buds for something even greater.

  23. June 8, 2007

    Colin Devroe

Hello everyone… As Rob pointed out in his comment, progressive should work fine. We’re having some streaming hiccups and we’ll get the ship pointed back in the right direction soon.

    Great episode, as usual!

Thanks for bringing the good Beaujolais to the tasting table, I think it’s something we definitely needed to see. I have to admit, with all the Nouveau and Villages, Jadot and Georges D, I have a bit of a prejudice against the Gamay grape. I think wine retailers are afraid to stock good Beaujolais, thinking people won’t buy them on account of their lesser counterparts. I will surely seek some of these out for my tasting in the future.

  25. June 8, 2007

    Jared B

QOTD – Nope, no bias for or against Beaujolais here. *flexes muscles of non-judgmentalism*

  26. June 8, 2007

    portland guy

Another Top 100. Very interesting episode. QOTD -Yep, and given all the wines I have yet to try, don’t think gamay will make its way onto my ‘must drink’ list for some time. sorry, gamay. might try to get one of my wine buddies to buy a couple of good bottles for our tasting sessions, tho.

  27. June 8, 2007

    amgryger

sweet. I asked for this a while back with one of the “what do you want me to post qotds.” Thanks Gary. I will watch it later when I get home from work.

QOTD: I can’t say that I have any prejudice for or against Beaujolais…as I’ve never had any.

    Orion Slayer

What an awesome series of tastings we got this week! Talk about QPR, Wine Library TV offers the best QPR in wine tasting anywhere. Too bad the virtual tasting feature on my computer isn’t working.

QOTD: Prejudice against Beaujolais? No WAY!

I just wish I could try more. But at $15 a bottle, I’ll be experiencing this part of Burgundy a lot sooner than the Pinot noir side.

  30. June 8, 2007

    Neil

Yeh, progressive works on viddler. I have only ever tried the Beaujolais Nouveau and what can I say? It wasn’t my cup of tea, however I am intrigued by the primeire crus and will seek some out in the future. EPH

    Have a great weekend Vayniacs!

  31. June 8, 2007

    CindyW

QOTD: I suppose I do have a bit of prejudice against beaujolais, mostly because it was a starter wine for me. Anything I drank when I was 20ish was usually pretty bad. However, I’m willing to brush aside the bad preconceptions and give it a try. :)

I’m especially eager now that Gary has compared them to tea. Yes, I am a HUGE tea geek, and probably spend as much time tasting and comparing teas (not that Lipton or herbal crap) as I do wine.

  32. June 8, 2007

    sharon

And I thought Beaujolais was a band from New Orleans. No, I don’t have any
bias (aka prejudice)toward Beaujolais. I’m not informed enough to be snobbish. Willing to give it a try, though, especially with duck.

  33. June 8, 2007

    Tom (vtjones)

QOTD: I have not had a Beaujolais that I am aware of yet so no I am not prejudiced towards it. :-) Guess I will have to add it to my ever growing list.

  34. June 8, 2007

Gary, you crack me up!!! Q.O.D. Not about cru….Thanks for another entertaining show!

Nope. Just with France in general a few years back over something or other.

QOTD: well my feelings on the beaujolais are best described with a Ralph Steadman quote: “I was with a so-called expert. I was talking about Beaujolais. He said “I’m not talking about that, it’s not wine. Personally, I just stopped talking. It’s totally ridiculous …. it’s wine I love …. Do you like Van Gogh and do you like Picasso? Personally, I don’t like Picasso. I don’t understand Picasso. But I don’t say Picasso is a bad painter”

Now if only the Wine shops on Eastern Long Island carried some Beaujolais Cru

  37. June 8, 2007

    BCWinesAreIn

QOTD: given that I have only had Beaujolais Nouveau and mainly George Daboeuf stuff I am one of those people who have a prejudice against it. I’ll have to look for some better stuff to try. As for the Gamay grape I did have a Gamay Noir from the St Hubertus winery here in BC. It had a very prounced peppery taste which I liked. Was great with the beef short ribs I had.

  38. June 8, 2007

    patrill

QOTD: No! I love beaujolais! But I do hate the cheap stuff. The ones you tried today looked really good. And you made me want lamb too.

  39. June 8, 2007

    boyd

yeah, not a Beaujolais fan here. But I’m always open minded. It’s just that when I’m promised they’re good, I still end up not liking them.

Hate the Beaujolais? No! Love the Beaujolais.

Never had the nouveau, though, so maybe that might have something to do with it.

  46. June 8, 2007

    Billy G

No, I’ve enjoyed beaujolais in the past but haven’t had a bottle in a couple of years. Great show, it reminds me to find some to stick in the cellar.

  47. June 8, 2007

    cgf

great episode! I will have to check one of these out.

QOTD: I had a HUGE prejudica against beajolais because of that godawful noveau, and also the louis jadot beajoulais sucks in my opinion as well. however, i once had the fortune of having a morgon that someone bought thinking it was a pinot from burgundy. I went into thinking it would suck, but i was blown away by how delicious and food-friendly it was. it also wasn’t simple by any means.

Big intro! Getting a little loonie after filming so many episodes in a row?

  49. June 8, 2007

    Dr. Dan

Thanks for waking people up to what some of us already know. Cru Beaujolais ROCK. Hopefully, there won’t be a Sideways effect.
    QOTD: Big NO.

  50. June 8, 2007

    yowens44

Thanks GV- the Gamay will be searched out. QOTD: Yes- but no longer.

  51. June 8, 2007

    RieslingRon

No prejudice here………I’ve never had any of the Noveau versions, but give me a Fleurie, or a Morgon and I’ll be happy.

  52. June 8, 2007

    Randy B

Good ep. Cru Beaujolais rocks. It’s the only Gamay that is age worthy. You can’t find a true Gamay outside of France. Did you also know that Gamay is a clone of Pinot Noir?

    Ciao

  53. June 8, 2007

    Tommy Mack

QOTD Yes, but I may have to rethink after I try some Cru.

  54. June 8, 2007

    Randy B

I need to clarify something I stated earlier. Gamay Beaujolais, especially in California, is a clone of Pinot Noir. Cru Beaujolais is a blend that consists mostly of the Gamay grape which may or may not be a prehistoric clone of pinot noir. Blah, blah, blah…and so what? Just thought you might want to know.

    half century

Well shut my mouth! And open my wine mind! top 10 Gary. and therein lies my ans. to the QOTD.
The rubber ball you referred to is a Spalding or as we’ses on Long Island used to call it a Spaldeen with which you play ‘Ham and Eggs’. On the street with just an infield. the pitch is a one bouncer with as much spin as you can and the batter slaps it with his/her palm. no gloves. awesome ballgame!

  56. June 8, 2007

    Fco.

Not really prejudice, cause I’ve never had it…never even heard of it ’til now. Gonna have to keep my eyes open

  57. June 8, 2007

    Harold

QOTD: All I’m really familiar with is the nouveau and I don’t think it’s bad but just…insubstantial. Always figured that the Cru would be better but never sought it out…until now.

  58. June 8, 2007

    caleb

Prejudiced…but i will be ordering some soon because I havent given it a fair shot. I would like to try some of the nicer versions that you highlighted. Hope your rockin it hardcore in GREECE!

    amgryger

I love the flower and rose petal flavors and in fact, a couple of weeks ago I did eat a flower, a couple actually, to work on that part of my palate. Taking the advice of the palate buidling episode I tasted a bunch of other earthy-forest things too.

QOTD: Nope. I enjoy pretty much any wine that tastes like rose petals. I actually seek them out.

  60. June 8, 2007

    Dan. M.

Beaujolais Nouveau – definite prejudice against. Ridiculous stuff!

Beaujolais like the ones in today’s tasting I have a definite prejudice for. The best value of any wine in the world today.

  61. June 8, 2007

    Frank R

Gary, beautiful show again today. I’m going to hit up some Bo jo lay soon. Can’t wait to try it. Speaking of that, and I’m just being your friend here, have you considered taking a couple French lessons just to get some pronounciation down? It might make you happy. Just a thought!

  62. June 8, 2007

    mas

OK OK – yes, I definitely think Beaujolais is sub-standard … I haven’t had a good bottle yet – but I trust you, so I’ll give a cru Beaujolais a try.

  63. June 8, 2007

    Billman

QOTD: yes I’ve been slighted by Beaujolais in the past, but perhaps I’ll give it another go.

  64. June 8, 2007

    Simon D

As a longtime lurker this episode has brought me out of the shadows…

I used to really enjoy some Beaujolais several years ago. Then I had a bad one and next read an article in some magazine about how they were wines that experienced wine drinkers wouldn’t even consider…so I did form a preconceived bias against them. I think I’ll give them another shot now though.

    Thanks for another great episode!

  65. June 8, 2007

    Montrose

QOTD: I have had a good number of the cru Beaujolais, and have no prejudice. I just don’t drink them because I do not have a taste for fetid, rotting bananas that seems to be Beaujolais’ constant hallmark.

  66. June 8, 2007

    James

    Another brilliant episode. Great lushness!

    QOTD: Nope.

  69. June 8, 2007

QOTD: I’m only prejudiced towards the crummy Beaujolais that we get in high desert Nevada. I’d be happy to get my hands on a few bottles of the stuff you were sipping on in this episode.

    Gary,

You’re right on with quality of better Gamays. Have you tried Nicolas Potel’s Chenas vielles vignes? Worthy, I believe.

  72. June 8, 2007

    HipandKneeDoc

No prejudice in that I wouldn’t drink it or look down…but I do have some preconceived notions of it being less serious and better for casual drinking.

  73. June 8, 2007

    Ben N.

    QOTD: No.

  74. June 8, 2007

    portman

    Beaujolais? Cru?

I think it’s illegal to have cru beaujolais in Maine. I have only seen and drank Georges Debouef’s nouveau stuff with the pretty flower labels.

    Sigh.

QOTD: Nope. I’ll be looking the shelves in the better stores now for the cru beaujolais. Then I’ll reconsider if I’m prejudiced against beaujolais.

  75. June 8, 2007

    QOTD: No.
    Miss you!

Disagree with the comment about learning “proper” French pronunciation, you communicate and make yourself understood and that’s the objective n’est pas?
Besides it adds to the charm and persona. That attitude is exactly the snootiness that “we’re trying to change the wine world” , i’snt it?

Wow! that was freaky, dunno what happened but I think I just had a major flashback. Consider this my three cents.

As I was saying, being new to the wine world I guess I’m prejudiced in favor of as I recall as a child watching the local news stories about the excitement and anticipation of the first shipment each year. I recall queues of Cabbage Patch and Tickle Me Elmo proportion. I figured it must be a good thing.

Definitely surprised about the aging thing I also thought it was something that should be consumed sooner rather then later.

Well. you did it again, I started a new cart……. damn you Vay-ner-chuk you’ll be the end of my marriage yet!

  79. June 8, 2007

Hey Gary, do you got change for a nickle?

I’ve never even SEEN a Cru Beaujolais. Which speaks more to my lack of knowledge than the lack of diversity I’ve been exposed to. . . Next time I’m near one, I’ll grab it. Unless you wanna put one on free.winelibrary.com, because I’m a sucker for that site like you would not believe. . . (Luckily, not for $20+ pinot grigio, however)

  81. June 8, 2007

Love this string of episodes. No, I don’t have a prejudice about beaujolais. I’ve only tried a couple so far. They weren’t bad but not worth writing home about. I’ll try one or two from this show soon and give the gamay grape another shot!

  82. June 8, 2007

great show, the pennies at the end hilarious…QOTD no not at all prejudice against beaujolais. Exspecially after todays episode I’m always up for some outstanding QPR… I should be into abottle of Beaujolais by tomarrow evening…Hope your enjoying your trip..Catch ya later

My brother brought a Beujolais to Thanksgiving dinner last year (said it would go well with the turkey). One of the few wines I have ever dumped out (very embarrasing). Went with the MacMurray pinot noir instead.

Maybe I should revisit the Gamay grape, however, especially with the QPR.

Love the pennies in the eyes.

Love the episode, Gary! QOD: Well, maybe a little predudice. For some reason, I want to compare Beaujolais with Yago Sangria….

I not prejudice of this wine. It’s well suited with a nice light pasta with raw tomato sauce. It’s a summer wine. I like it – how’s the VACA treating you Gary?

    t_moderne

hey Gary. Nice shirt. Have I seen it before?
yeah yeah yeah, I know. just a running joke.
    anyway – the QOTD –
I am not prejudiced against cheap, watery overly fruity and one dimensional wines like Beaujolais. I happen to like both the “cold duck” like flavor profile of Beaujolais Nouveau as well as the thin, fruity but often times dry and acidic wines from Morgon, Fleurie and Brouilly. I like it when I don’t even want to finish the whole bottle because the wine is too tart and uninteresting. Smell the sarcasm.
Maybe if I tasted something good – but too many bad DuBouef’s have led me to better place my money on Spanish wines and now wines from Portugal too.

  91. June 8, 2007

    thabeav

    Gary,

Great thinking. Nice topic. Ther are many good cru beaujolais. These would be great for a “taste-along-with-Gary” episode as they are something everyone could afford and enjoy. Thanks again for the WLTV-a-thon. I hope you’re drunk and (more)obnoxious by the last episode.

  92. June 8, 2007

Gary-Thanks for ONCE again challenging us to try new things. Never tried a Beaujolais before. I will soon. Another fabulous ep!!!

  93. June 8, 2007

    Dave Canada

Come on….how many beaujolais do you really drink?
QOTD – Guilty as charged…I would never have bought a beaujolais…never! But, I’ll give it a look and let you know.

  94. June 8, 2007

    TROC

Wow! Cru Beaujolais, can’t wait for the Cru Rose’s episode. I’m not prejudice, but I do tend to discriminate. Is that a hate crime?

I don’t care for beaujolais. Not my cup of tea. Too light. But will consider cru b…and give it a try based on yor recommendation.

Beaujolais rocks it and always has. It’s all about place and time and the wine that moves the moment!

QOTD: Hell yeah I have a preconcieved bias against the gamay grape, but it’s georges fault. If he didn’t make that aweful sewer water he calls wine we wouldn’t have this problem. My wife is ready to strangle you for dissing her Earl Grey tea, it’s her favorite thing in the world. But hey, we’re cool, cuz oolong is my favorite.

I cut my wine teeth on Georges Debouef Beaujolais when I was 22 or 23 so I have a soft spot. Great memories! I’ve tried his cru efforts and they usually disappoint but I like what you’re bringing with these three. Note to self…look for the horse on the bottle!

QOTD: Yes… but I’m willing to try a Cru. By the way, isn’t silver needles typically a white tea, rather than an oolong?

  104. June 9, 2007

    JCfromtheWC

To be perfectly, honest I am probably a little biased. Doesn’t mean I don’t buy ‘em or drink ‘em. I actually got into a fairly heated argument just the past weekend. A friend of mine was trying to convince me that all Beaujolais was crap and that the French were embarrassed to even produce it; the only reason it was still grown was because foolish Americans drank it. I tried very hard to convince him that Noveau is definitely more about marketing than wine, there was some good stuff out there. Long story short he was unwilling to listen to reason. I’ll send him a link to this video and see if Gary and the Vaynernation can do any better.

Not my cup o’ tea for today’s episode, but interesting nonetheless.

QOTD – No prejudice, just haven’t found any I affirmatively enjoy. There are a few I recognize as being good, but just aren’t what I’d actively seek out other than to fulfill my desire to try new things. My most enjoyed wine I’ve had from Gamay was a Canadian one, so go figure.

gv – i have no prejudice against the Beau (unlike your prejudices against the SoCal female)after WLTV episode #160 taught me not to judge.

I’ve absolutely been prejudiced. Up until this point it has only been Villages and Noveau that I’ve had, and here in Japan, they are big wine marketing events when they come out each year, and very dissapointing. These Cru look interesting, and even from the labels they look like they have subsistence. Good episode, and good topic. Thanks.

QOTD: no prejudice. A Beaujolais Village (Marmot, I think) was one of my favorite wines at the pizza parlor 40 years ago. I still drink it ocassionally, and maybe should more. Nice episode.

Qotd: NO I will try anything once, And if i like it i’ll try it twice . Great ep G You look like your getting a little hopped up on the goof ball !!! I can’t wait to see the last ep of this marathon , should be pretty good stuff . Thanks Once again for your dedication to the vaynernation .

Gary, +2 points for you. I’m big into high quality tea and I found it interesting you are too.

Silver needle or Pai Mu Tan loose leaf tea is the best.

QOTD: Hey- I don’t knock ANY wine because I know that there is a well-made example of every type of wine out there. THAT BEING SAID (it’s infectious- gotta cut back on that phrase), I’m usually not that enthused about the thought of “Beaujolais Nuveau,” and the carbonic maceration and how the wine hits shelves within a month of the harvest. REAL Beaujolais, however, is still on my “Wines Yet To Be Tasted” list, and it just moved up a few notches in priority. Thanks BIG G. (I just tackled my first “Groovy,” and I got an Albarino to conquer later this week.)

QOTD: Do I knock Beaujolais??? Hellz No! It was the first red wine I had that was reccomended to be served slightly chilled. What an amazing red wine. I think we had Pork with it….phenominal. It was a Kermit wine…with a simple white & black label with “Beaujolais” in cursive on it….I forget the producer now. I think we’ve all had our moments though where our minds were closed off to one kind of wine or another. I can certainly say I am guilty of that…however life is good and I have finally seen the light. I have an opening in my cellar for a little bit of everything today…

  115. June 9, 2007

Definitely not prejudice towards the Beaujolais(and neither is my spell checker, to my surprise =) but I have never heard of it. I do intend to go try it now though! Keep bringing the thunder GV!!

  116. June 9, 2007

    Ferrigno

Finally beaujolais thank you!!! Seriously this 12-episode rumble has been great since you have attacked some grapes/regions that were completely missing in the show. Now I’m crossing fingers and wishing to see an alsatian gewurztraminer episode soon as well as a dream I have, an episode where 2 Sauternes fight 2 Tokaji and your two cents on the differences of the regions :) THANK YOU GARY!!!! I HOPE YOU’RE HAVING A GREAT TRIP :)

  117. June 9, 2007

    Ferrigno

oh and I’ve always have been intrigued by Beaujolais. Never thought of it as being inferior, although I’ve never seen one scored ” x>92″. Could it be that the 95 and higher is unachievable in this category??????????????

  118. June 9, 2007

    TD

Great to see the oft-overlooked Beaujolais crus getting some attention. Summer’s coming and it’s time to drink a few slightly chilled bottles of Morgan, and Julienas

Don’t forget the Cote de Puy, lovely things there!

  119. June 9, 2007

Another great episode! QOTD: I’ve never tried a Beaujolais (is that weird??), so I have no preconceived ideas about it. I need to go buy a couple and try them out.

It was impossible to watch this last night no matter what I tried. This AM, no problems with streaming. Must be the traffic.
I was prejudiced against Beaujolais, but am willing to start over with it. I will seek them out.

QOTD: No prejudice here. I’ve never tried Beaujolais Nouveau, or even regular Beaujolais. Just villages and Cru, so I’ve never experienced the crappy crap. Vive le Cepage Gamay!

By the way, if beaujolais doesn’t suck, what about the gamay based wines in the loire, like from the touraine?

  123. June 9, 2007

    J Crazy

First of all, what happened to the good old days of like episode 10 when there was only 3 comments? Now it takes a half hour to load the comment page, hehehe!

QOTD: You guys want to know about Beaujolais? Well, we also would like to know a little bit over here in Japan. You say Beaujolais and everyone thinks good old George (what’s with dicks named george?!?). The Nouveau comes out here before anywhere, even France and we get the “made for 7-11″ junk. If you’re intrepid you can find the good juice but ON THE WHOLE I feel sorry for Gamay. Poor grape. Being said that, the potential Bojolay has as a way value wine is exciting and I hope more producers and importers get hip to it.

  124. June 9, 2007

    Elliot Essman

I love the Beaujolais Crus and hate the bubblegum type Beaujolais (and fortunately know the difference). I’m three wines into tasting all the 10 Crus. I’ve enjoyed the Joseph Drouhin Moulin-à-Vent 2005, the Georges Dubouef Régnié 2005, and the Château Thivin Brouilly 2005.

Having a great time with these, and, yes, the value is there.

QOTD: I have to admit that before I had tasted good wine in general, I really liked george’s beaujolais village. You know, in the grocery store with the flowers on the bottle. Now that I have tasted much more of what is out there, I still like the cru beaujolais, especially Morgon. Will have to try these others.

  126. June 9, 2007

Great show with some great wines!

QOTD: Only Beaujolais i’ve ever had were the Jadot a couple of time. Can’t wait to try some Cru. Thanks for expanding my wine world.

Hmm, I have to confess to being a bit prejudiced against the Beaujolais… after watching this though I think it’s time I tried some better stuff! Great episode!

    lifestooshort

QOTD: Definitely prejudiced toward Beaujolais, because before I started getting serious about wine, my only point of reference was nouveau beau. (every September, the local wine store would sell it). I hated that stuff, and never gave it another thought. Actually, Eric Asimov did an interesting blog piece on it not long ago. Definitely willing to give this a shot–cheers.

qotd: definately prejudice against beaujolais. only ones i’ve had are the deboufs and equally priced ones. the grand cru’s of beaujolais (the ones you tasted, for example) i’ve never heard of nor tried. once again gary v, always breaking down the wine stereotypes for me. thanks

Cru B’s are great, and Kermit does a good job of importing so we’re lucky we live near enuf Kermit’s store.

yes, am not a fan of pinkish swillish George Debuf N B’s.

Great show, hope Greece is treating you well.

  132. June 9, 2007

    Dan Jaworek

Prejucided against Gamay? No way. I buy at least one case of Beaujolais every year. Its the perfect casual wine to consume with my roasted chicken (slightly brined, browned perfectly, and served w/a thyme scented au jus) and a gratin of potato. Its great with pate too. But more important, there is no such thing as an inferior grape. Grapes are like cuts of meat. The belly is not inferior to the loin. Its just different and has different applications. Wines are the same way. Why drink a monster Cab with roast chicken? There’s beauty not only in the wines themselves but in the interplay between the food, wine, occasion, atmosphere, and the company its consumed with. People often speak of how a simple wine consumed on vaction in France in a bistro tasted so much better than it did when they tried it here. But you can create your own precious moments with wine, food, and company if you open yourself to the simple charms that each variety has to offer and celebrate it for what it is. Once you do that you begin to enjoy cotes du rhone with simple beef stew, Chinon with a filet mignon, vouvray with scallops, sancerre with oysters, and rose with ratatoulle. Just ask yourself “what is its nature, what does this wine do?”

If I haven’t bought of Beaujolais in the past 8 years does that make me prejudiced against it? So yeah, I probably am. I will go to the principals office and pick up said bottle of Beaujolais.

  136. June 9, 2007

    PhilB

QOTD: Even though I DID have one or two bottles of really nice Beaujolais, I guess that I still get scared when someone brings Beaujolais over for dinner… But hey, episodes like this one are putting one more nail in the Beaujolais prejudice’s coffin, which is a very good thing!

  137. June 9, 2007

    JimmyB

I am not scared of Beaujolais as I have not drank any to this date, but did buy a bottle a couple of weeks ago. Louis Jadot 2005. Pulled it out, set it on the table and will consume tonight with leftover bacon wrapped steak from the other night. Wish me luck.

I found your “tea” comment interesting. I will look for this as an identifier when I next drink Beaujolais. In blind tastings, my most successful identifier of Beaujolais is a banana and strawberry aroma & flavor. 42 years ago when I first started drinking wine, Beaujolais was among the first wines I ever drank. Back then I drank them almost immediately, but about a decade later I started holding some (Cru Beaujolais) back for 5-10 years in good vintages. I found they get amazingly more Burgundian in their taste profile. On very rare occasions, I have had 15-20 year old Beaujolais, which had become virtually indistinguishable from a good Beaune.

  140. June 9, 2007

    Wimberly Miree

One additional comment: The banana I get with youngish Beaujolais begins to fade with age, or gets covered up, with many other complex nuances, as most good reds will do. I never have been a big buyer of Beaujolais, but always have about a case lying around the cellar….all Cru.

QOTD- Of course I cant stand it, the first time i had gamey was in 1983 around thanksgiving and it was good to me, of course all the wine snobs laughed at my palate and I havent gone back since, however Gary you changed my mind and I am going to seek them out and get the last laugh.

  144. June 9, 2007

    Karl Laczko

QOTD – Yes. Had a Fleuri last year and it was OK, but didn’t rock my world. Haven’t had a Beaujolais since, maybe need to put the area back onto my buy list to see if things have changed.

  145. June 9, 2007

    Sully

mmmm toilet water Beaujolais……..cant wait. *puking*

  146. June 9, 2007

    Marc

QOTD: I’m not prejudice against Beaujolais. I’m just judice against it. Prejudice suggests I’m pre-judging, and instead I’m judging it off what I’ve had in the past, and I just don’t really like it. I just don’t like some grapes. I don’t really like Gamay, just like I don’t really like Sangiovese.

I think this is a problem with the wine world. Not Beaujolais; I have not problem with people liking it. But it seems like people think if you like wine you should have some respect for every varietal. What’s wrong with just knowing that I don’t like wine from certain grapes? Shouldn’t I just trust MY palate?

  147. June 9, 2007

    Dominus

I’m one of the few that doesn’t mind having the DuBoeuf Nouveau at Thanksgiving. Whatever it takes to get the other side of the family to even try wine, I’ll do it. Of course, I then slip in a bottle of Flowers Pinot so I can show them what “real” wine tastes like.

Good show. Unfortunately, you’re already sold out of the Roilette: :(

    Cheers!

QOTD – the only Beaujolais I’ve ever had was heinous; ‘course it probably wasn’t the good stuff, so yes, I am prejudiced in regard to Beaujolais. I’ll try to be a little more open-minded.

  149. June 10, 2007

QOTD- I can honestly say I have never had a legitimate beaujolais, so i have no prejudices….after watching this episode, damn skippy that I will try one soon.

  150. June 10, 2007

    Cool theme!

QOTD: I haven’t had too many Beaujolais, but I can honestly say that I have had a very positive attitude toward this wine and want to seek out great values (find something other than Louis Jadot).

quick question, is there a difference between “Beaujolais” and “Beaujolais Villages”?

  151. June 10, 2007

    EdKoo

I like my beaujolais crus. They’re a different world compared to the beaujolais villages.

And beaujolais is the lowest classification followed by beaujolais villages, followed by beaujolais cru’s.

  152. June 10, 2007

    LMoC

(Been a lurker for a few episodes now… First comment.)

QOTD: I’m a kosher wine drinker, so as it is, I’m constricted varietal-wise. I don’t believe that there is any kosher Beaujolais exported from France. If I’m correct, then we have only imitation Beaujolais (Nouveau) from Gamay grapes grown in the Golan Heights. The latter is a delicious, fruity wine, though it goes bad very quickly.

Am I correct in assuming that what Gary was tasting was prepared with a crush-fermentation and not carbonic maceration?

Great show, keep bringing the Thunder! Your alcohol level must be getting up there after all these ep’s. Can’t wait till the next one..

Great shout-out to Kermit Lynch! I am a huge fan of his wine, I live close to his retail store, and shop there a lot. Also, I highly recommend his book (Adventures on the Wine Route)- it helped shape my thoughts about wine and it’s just a lot of fun. Along with the Vayniaks (with a little bit a’ Gary), Kermit has been changing the wine world.
QOTD: I like beaujolais a lot, probably drinking a couple bottles a month this time of year.

As usual right on the money, these are great wines that are the Rodney Dangerfield of the wine world. They are perfect for summer. One of the most memorable meals I ever had was a lunch at Mama’s Fish House in Maui where I had Ono paired with a 5 year old 1998 Moulin a Vent from George Duboeuf. At least for me they do improve with mid term storage, for instance the 2003’s are drinking great right now. The only problem I have with them is that the Mabileau Bourgeuil 2005 does everthing in a similiar fashion only better. I fear that this wine has changed me forever.

When I was a young man, on a date, I was at a nice restaurant and orderd a Cru Beaujolais, of course I had no idea what I was ordering! I lucked out! QOTD: I’m always open to different varietals, so no, I don’t have any preconceived notions about Beaujolais. I am a little reticent about hitting up Beaujolais Nouveau again. I haven’t had it in a long time, and I am afraid that I will be extremely let down…

QOTD: I am prejudice towards Beaujolais, I do have preconceived notions about it. Although I can say that I probably have them towards most varietals. I do have certain expectations for a given varietal. That being said, I look forward to the new Beaujolais tastings every November. Its a tradition. Although its probably the only time I drink it during the year.

  178. June 11, 2007

Great episode Gary. I like the Beaujolais and think, along with Pinot Noir, it is a great red wine for the summer. Thanks for identifying the one with the “heat”, I don’t like my Pinot with heat nor do I like my Beaujolais with heat. It should be what it is — fruit forward with a great bouquet and easy finish.

  179. June 11, 2007

    Mike

Having these with light summer meals is great! My question is whether one should be chilling these prior to opening them? I get a variety of answers to that question, so I thought I’d see what people think. (20 minutes, 1hr??? How long to chill them, or don’t chill at all?)

  180. June 11, 2007

    eatapc

QOTD: Yes, I’m prejudiced against Beaujolais — but not bigoted about it. That is, my prejudice is not unfair, obstinate or ignorant.

About 15 years ago I read an article about how Beaujolais was the best bang for the buck in the wine world — classic, outstanding French wine for reasonable prices. I bought few (Fluerie, Morgon, Brouilly) that had been reviewed highly, but ended up very disappointed. My recollection is that I found them on the light, acidic side, with some sour strawberry and banana fruit but not much else. I just crossed them off my list of things to try.

I’ll try one again — but only for Gary. ;) Mark B

Great episode. QOTD: Yes, but with no good reason. Have to add Beaujolais to my “shortcomings” list.

  182. June 11, 2007

QOTD: I went through a phase a few years back when I loved Brouilly and Fleurie. I haven’t had much since and the last Deboeuf B-Villages I had didn’t really help the cause but I’ll have to revisit the more serious Crus. I have a Morgon VV that I should open soon.

AotD: Nope. If you buy a quality Beaujolais there’s nothing to fear. However, I find that there are quite a few bad ones out there to steer clear of; helping to add fuel to the prejudice.

Up until this episode, yes,I haven’t had much interest in Beaujolais, and the stuff I’ve tried in the past didn’t move me in any way. I will definitely try the “better stuff” soon! Seems like a great summer red.

No Beujolais with steak. Had one tonite was the Moulin a Vent you reviewed. Goes with a steak quite nicely. The crappy Nouveaus that have been brought out year after awful year, the DeBouef schlock that fattens all the store shelves. That has given Beaujolais a bad name, not the wonderful Fleuries, Bruilly’s and Moulin a Vents that many of us have enjoyed. Liked them better when they were $2.50 a bottle but still one of the best buys in the wine world.

    Gary,
I am extremely prejudiced, I love Beaujolais. It is food friendly, running the gamut from roast chicken (the best) to many fish. Try it with salmon, sturgeon or even tuna. But even more to the point, it is the quintessential bistro wine, and low enough in alcohol that you can drink a bit more. That’s a plus, eh? The ones you tasted last well. i’m still drinking and enjoying more than ever my 2000 Thivin and Dme de Diochon. And i wish i had some Clos de Roilette left. By the way, the latter is really adjacent to and claimed by the owner to be in Moulin a Vent, not that it matters to the imbiber. Great wines, and there are so many more from the Beaujolais Crus.

$0.02 QOTD: Yes, a bit. My image of Beaujolais is light, thin, tart wines with little complexity or richness. But I have only had a few bottles and nothing better than Beaujolais-Village level.

QOTD: No. I have actually had a Beaujolais the last three years with Thanksgiving dinner. (And the last two years it was the Chateau Thivin Cote de Brouilly – what an amazing wine.) I think it’s a great summer red. Loved the show. (Do I say that every day?)

I can’t recall that I’ve ever had a Beaujolais…I gotta go pick up one to try.

My .02; I’m tired of all these Emo kids.

Never had a Beaujolais, must seek one out.

QOTD: Only thing I’ve heard was that it shoud be drank young, I would love to try one though.

beaujolais is the best for a picnic – slightly chilled with sandwiches in my experience

I am very prejudice against Beaujolais Nouveau. This is a great example of how hype and marketing can ruin wine…

    That being said…

I am quite a fan of Cru Beaujolais and good Villages. My current favourite is the Dmn. de Moulin Berger Julienas. Fleurie is also very popular in Ireland (probably cause it’s easy to say) but amongst the crus, in my opinion probably not the best. For me, it’s Julienas and Moulin a Vent with Morgon not far behind.

Any word on the Didier Dageuneau episode? having his Pur Sang on Sunday…

This is smth you should do more, really … like that, kicking serious ass and debunking all that artsy fartsy nifty crap! :-D
QOTD: No, I am not and have never been so. My granddad often opened a nice Beauj, so I knew fromthe start they can be gorgeous.

I like the Beuaj. I’ve only had good cru beauj on occasion simply cause its not widely available. I’ll check my local guys toay though…haven’t checked in a while.

Catching up after a week in Puerto Rico…

QOTD: Eh, to an extent. I mean we have Beaujolais a couple times a year (Turkey Day and so forth) but I guess I don’t consider it a serious wine, even though I’ve enjoyed it. I think it gets lumped in there with Rosé as a wine that so many people have considered a guilty pleasure.

I will definitely look into a case of Beaujolais. We have been wanting something a little lighter when we are tired and don’t think our palates can take a beating. Seems like a good lazy Saturday wine.

Excellent episode on Beaujolais! QOTD: Oh, I am definitely prejudiced on Beaujolais. I love it! That is, the Crus. Give me a nice Fleurie, Brouilly, Moulin-a-Vent, Cheroubles, Julien, any time. As you said, these wines can age, they are a tremendous QPR, and they are wonderful in the summer as a “lighter” red wine. Furthermore, I will disagree with you, Gary. I’ve had some Moulin-a-Vents that went perfectly well with steak and potatoes. They can be pretty big wines.

Catching up after 10 nights in Hawaii! :)

QOTD: Before having tried Beaujolais, I had some unjustified prejudice. I just assumed that I wouldn’t like it. But after trying a bottle, I really like it. Not as much as Chianti or Zinfandel. But I like it.

    BTW: Hawaii was great.

Ok Gary you just made my beaujolais cru love stage come back!! After this episode I picked up the Morgon WL carries, Desvignes it’s called, so I drank it last night and boy o’boy what a delightful nose, strawberry candy in it’s prime! Seriously that kind of nose can keep me watching movies and smelling it forever :)

I tried the Clos De La Roilette Fleurie 2005 tonight with some roasted turkey and it was fantastic. I finished the bottle about two hours ago and I can still taste it. The strawberry component is very strong, but not overpowering. At first I could smell a lot of alcohol on the nose, so much I had to check the percentage, but after an hour or so open on the counter it toned down a bit.

The tasting notes on this were spot on for me, and I would also give this 90 points.

I will definitely be seeking more of this out and trying it again in November. Not to mention it is a nice QPR at $15.

    Thanks GV!

I’ve got a soft spot in my heart for good cru Beaujolais. So much so that I’m going to taste there on our trip to Burgundy next year. Part of me is teary that you did them proud, and part is wanting to kick you for letting the value-cat out of the bag.

Cru Beaujolais are one of my favorite reds to drink here in warm Hawaii. I enjoy drinking an aged Cru Beaujolais as it does evolve over time. Fleurie is still my favorite, followed by Moulin A Vent then Cote de Brouilly.

QOTD: The only thing I knew about Beaujolais before this episode is that Bob Dylan was getting tanked on it while he was in the studio cutting one of his first albums and my co-worker says you can hear it as the album progresses. I do admit to maying having a prejudice against a winery (more of a joke of pretending to be a wine snob then actual prejudice) , but never against an actual type of wine before I tried a handful of them.

i have been drinking bojis since I got a bunch of 04′ drouhin fleurie, julienas, and chirobles for 7 bucks a pop. It was aewsome, until I drank all the store had to offer. I had found a goldmine. 7 bucks for a 25 dollar wine in it’s prime… These wines were mature last november….. Oh yah, new orleans is always bringing more thunder than most can imagine…. especially with the burgs and bojis….we rock more french magic than most states can dream of… but it’s a secret, Gary, so don’t tell anyone.

I’ve only tried the Beaujolais noveau as i’m sure many have, consistently don’t like the flavour profile, but i want to try some serious stuff to see how it varies!
