Far Out! Tocai Friulano! I will definitely have to try one of these. They seemed interesting when I read about them in the Wine Bible recently. I promise, when I’m able to order wine from WineLibrary again this will be the first I buy.

QOTD: The Thing from Fantastic Four! Man, the Raiders could use a linebacker like the Thing in our backfield. It’s clobbering time! :)

Finalmente! some more lesser known wines from the big boot.

QOTD: Definitely Wonder Woman. I asked endlessly for an invisible jet and magic lariat. I think I dressed up as WW several years in a row for Halloween. Great QOTD!

Did I actually get in the top 20?

QOD: I was always a huge X-Men fan. I liked Colossus, not so much because he was Russian, but that he had skin made of FRICKIN’ steel!

Watched using Viddler for the first time. Must better experience, although Gary didn’t point at any links or what-not to hit up. Nice choice of wines today too.

Great episode. I love Italian wines, and i really like Arneis. I am certainly going to try the Tocai.

QOTD: I could say Batman and I wouldn’t be lying but that’s not too exciting so I’ll go with Gunwitch from the Nocturnals.

Wow!Did not even know that grape variety! sounds interesting…

Is the Oak Monster a superhero?? Nah, I guess not…

QOTD: Doctor Who. Is he a superhero? He is to me!

  27. June 12, 2007

    Chris Fehnel

QOTD: Don’t know too many super heros really, never been a big comic fan. I don’t really “connect” with any of the comic book movies too much either, so I’m gonna have to go on a pass on this one, with 10 z’s.

  29. June 12, 2007

    Great episode,
    QOTD: No superhero.

  31. June 12, 2007

Gary, Tokaj is not only a Hungarian wine, but Slovak as well. The Tokaj region spreads from north-eastern Hungary to south-eastern Slovakia. And that’s completly enforced by the EU law. Please, do mention Slovakia, next time you’ll be talking about Tokaj. Do it for me, please.

QOTD: Pacho hybsky zbojnik is my superhero.

  32. June 12, 2007

    Kevin Warner

    QOTD – Chuck Norris.

  33. June 12, 2007

When I was a little kid, Danger Mouse was my favorite! Definitely my all time super hero. I was also a big He-Man fan. Didn’t get into the comic books as much. When I started watching WLTV I didn’t drink white wine at all. Now i’m constantly finding different ones that I adore. I can’t thank you enough. Can’t wait ’til you get back.

  37. June 12, 2007

QOD: Neo. Yeah the trilogy ended up a bit cheesy and preachy, but didn’t you want to learn Kung Fu and Jujitsu in 0.3 seconds too?

  38. June 12, 2007

    vibemore

Have never tasted the Tocai F. Intrigued.

QOTD: Easy, easy, easy one…the one and only FLASH!

  39. June 12, 2007

    amgryger

I wish I had taken better notes when I was in Italy. I drank so much amazing wine that I can’t even remember the names of anymore. Live and learn I guess.

QOTD: I would have to go with Batman. I really liked the imagery of Gotham City. And I had thought of it until reading another post, but I’m sure he could put a lot of wine in the Bat Cave.

    Great episode!!
Actually made it into the store over the weekend, completly by accident. Happened to be attending an AAU Basketball tournament in Milburn got off the exit and cruised right by the store. Stopped in after the games were over for the day on Saturday. Impressive!!!

I’m with yah G-Man Tocai is so underrated by consumers, I’ve tried many a conversion but so many people stick with the P/G.

QOTD: When i was young my grandfather was pretty much a superhero.

    QOTD: Batman

  45. June 12, 2007

    JasonP

    Great Episode.

QOTD: Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Brian, yes I’d call her a superhero. Carefully crafted too, always avoided any story that would cast her in a less than heroic light.

  46. June 12, 2007

    Jared B

Hope you’re having fun on your vacation, Gary. :-)

QOTD: Hm… Hard decision. I’m going to go with Professor X. I’ve always wanted to be telepathic. ;-)

When Gary resorts back to the ‘ol superhero QOD, we know he’s ready to go home.

When’s that Gary Vaynerchuk action figure gonna be ready?

  48. June 12, 2007

    Marc

QOTD: Batman. I like the fact that he has no supernatural powers, yet he still is willing to risk his ass for the well-being of Gotham’s denizens.

  49. June 12, 2007

    BCWinesAreIn

Tried an Insolia a couple of months back. I liked it. it would have paired nicely with salmon or chicken for me.
QOTD: Spider-man. A regular guy during the day with everyday problems that puts himself on the line everytime he puts on the mask. With great power, comes great responsibility. Although Spider-man 3 was that good. Spider-man 2 is one of the greatest superhero movies ever.

  50. June 12, 2007

    Robin

QOTD: I think it would have to be Hellboy. Wierd and disturbing, but as played by Ron Perlman, sort of riveting. I think about him from time to time.

  51. June 12, 2007

    CindyW

Fun episode — you’re holding up well, GV. I’ll have to look for some Tocai Friulano to try.

QOTD: The Tick. Spooooooooooon!! (and yes, I have action figures)

  52. June 12, 2007

    J Kent

Easy – Superman – I kept hoping he would swoop in and kill the bad guy in the Texas Chain Saw Massacre movie. Never did. :( Buzzzzzzzzzzzzzz…

    Jon

  53. June 12, 2007

    Smith MBA

QOTD – Lawrence Taylor, andif you don’t think he is a super hero ask Joe Theisman.

I have an Italian Buddy who says Tocai Friuliano is the best wine in Italy. Honestly, I have never had it but it is on the list.

  54. June 12, 2007

    Russell Ingram

Coming out of lurker status… I’m a HUGE X-men fan, so this is tough. I’ve been battling between Nightcrawler and Wolverine, but I’ve got to go with my man Wolverine. Gary, love the show, you make finding new wine enjoyable. Keep it up.

    Cam

    QOTD: Gotta be Wolverine

  56. June 12, 2007

    J Crazy

QOTD: Green Lantern. He’s got a frackin ring (read “commitment to truth and justice”) that can produce any damn thing the man wants. Gotta love that. Plus he’s juuuust pus..wimpy lookin enough for us to believe that if we had a super magical ring we could become him too.

  57. June 12, 2007

    BV

QOTD – Lots of ‘em when I was a kid — Captain Marvel, Superman, Batman, Plastic Man, Wonder Woman, Mighty Mouse, The Phantom, Mandrake the Magician…..

Later on, I fell in love with Lindsay Wagner as The Bionic Woman.

Some years after that, I passed her on an escalator – my heart started pounding all over again.

A little shout-out to the flying von Erichs… nice. QOTD: Rorschach from Watchmen. Not actually a ’super’-hero, but he has — how you say? — terroir.

Although The Tick is pretty boss — good call, Netmynder.

  59. June 12, 2007

  60. June 12, 2007

    QOTD: Buffy

Nice to know there’s other whites from Italy, yay! And that it’s not the same as Tokai from Hungary because that’s exactly what I would have thought and hence probably never try. Clarity!

  61. June 12, 2007

    Capt M

What a fun episode! You always break us into different varietals, and that’s a lot of fun. I commend you for your incredible effort of leaving so many episodes recorded for us. You deserve a lot of love, Gary, and a lot of credit. I enjoy wine challenges and taste offs. Do more of those, Gary. QOTD: AQUAMAN! BTW, snakes do swim in the ocean. In fact, they’re prolifering.

  62. June 12, 2007

    Tom (vtjones)

Right on Netmynder The Tick ROCKS! :-)

This is completely off topic, but when the hell are you going to do a Southern Rhone Episode? Most notably CDP. I think Southern Rhone has some of the most interesting wines at reasonable costs.

  64. June 12, 2007

    Sully

Gary when are you going to do an episode on wine from different planetary systems or galaxies???

  65. June 12, 2007

Big G. I’m hitting you for the Second time today, because I didn’t leave the QOTD. Green Lantern all the way Not some of the spin offs, but Hal Jordan baby!

Spiderman, however I did not like any of the movies :-( I also really like Dr. Doom but he was not a hero, haha. I mixed it up this last weekend I served a Austrian wine and a wine from Sicily :-) .

  68. June 12, 2007

    TagWorld Brian

Favorite superhero has to be Supes himself, the Big S. Even though he’s probably the most boring, he would be the most fun to have his powers. Can’t wait for Superman 3: Superman vs. The Oak Monster! Because you, and a little bit of stuff that has nothing to do with wine, and me, … we’re changing the wine (and other stuff) worlds, aren’t we?

  69. June 12, 2007

    Shad

QOTD: How could it be anyone other than Superman? Tall buildings in a single bound. By the way Gary, excellent Von Erich wrestling reference..thought you were going to break out with the iron claw as a tribute. Gotta love what this vlog exposes us to in terms of wine types. It is yet another I need to seek out.

  70. June 12, 2007

    portman

Nice ep. Another grape that I was not aware of. Gonna have to recheck Jancis Robinson again. I do not recall her mentioning this grape.

QOTD: Ironman, Captain America, Dr Doom, Thor (bringing the thunder?), or Lancelot Link? The memories.

  71. June 12, 2007

Good show. How about turning folks on to Campania with Aglianico and Falanghia. Probably spelled those wrong but anyway, enjoy your shows very much.

    Canuckchuk

Gary–thanks for doing all these episodes in on sitting. We could have survived withou…actually, whom I kidding…we do need an episode a day!

I used to read Defenders comic books. Remember the 100th issue–Hell on Earth. Hard to believe, but the Defenders did save the world. And kudos to those of you who voted for Buffy. My wife got me hooked on the series. What, is there a problem with that? We drank riuniti on ice and cheered wildly when our hip vamp fighter permanently closed down the hell mouth. (maybe i’m just drawn to fights with hell.)

Enjoy your last few days of ouzo and grilled octopus, Gary!

  75. June 12, 2007

    Bossman

Dude, contiuning to bring the thunder after 11????? You’re my real life super hero but in the fantasy world, how can one top:

a mild mannered humble and lovable shoeshine boy who ducks into telephone booths (okay a bit dated) destroys it when he emerges caped and ready to take action (with a little pill assist)and destroy those nasty villians (with a tad collateral damage) while defending Sweet Polly Purebred, voiced by Wally Cox, speaks in rhyme and is a DOG to boot????

I am a hero who never fails.
I cannot be bothered with these details.

When Polly’s in trouble, I am not slow,
So it’s hip! hip! hip! and away I go.

When criminals in this world appear,
And break the laws that they should fear,
And frighten all who see or hear,
The cry goes up both far and near for
    Underdog!

There’s no need to fear, Underdog is here.

Not bird, not plane, not even frog, it’s just little old me, (at this point, Underdog crashes into something) Underdog.

Come on,dude, who can top that?

  76. June 12, 2007

Good show. I just go with Flash although Spidey I can identify with more.

I always liked the way that Dr. David Banner would morph into the Incredible Hulk when he got mad….he was a great superhero because he always put mean bullies into their rightful place! Plus—I liked that whole busting out of his shirt and pants thing. I couldn’t figure out how they staged that artful clothes ripping until I was almost an adult!

  81. June 12, 2007

    Raffi

Enjoy your time off and re-energize.

I have to go with Tom. The Batman. He’s rich, gets the girls, and he still kicks some tail even though he doesn’t have to. But not the fruity stuff from the 60s.

I also liked the Beetle. Serious smart@ss

  82. June 12, 2007

    Trish-da'-Dish

Yo’, Raffi! How did you colorize your post? Please share. Can you do blue, green, red, yellow, etc.?

Was over there last year and drank a tonne of TF…love them
QOTD – Astroboy? He had those rad feet that turned into rockets…how about Rocket Robin Hood? Maybe the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles….yeah them and Splinter rocked!

QOTD: I agreed with one of the earlier comments. Vegeta is my hero. Altough i was a little old to watch DGZ at that time, i coudn’t resist but to watch those amazing fights he did against the villans. And he was the most carismatic.

  86. June 12, 2007

QOTD: “Under Dog” Is here to save the day! Who can resist a dog that can fly and wares a super-hero uniform. Gary, you may not know the cartoons I watched, color TV was the new thing back then.

    Kelby

I just finished watching the Barolo episode. Are you rich? How do you afford to drink such much wine every other day? Also, how older are you? You don’t appear old enough to remember wines from the 80’s. (I’m a lurker. Sorry if you’ve already covered this)

what I like about your show G is that it’s not just about opening bottles and giving scores, it’s more about wine education, which you deliver superbly…Keep the new stuff rolling..

Great ep. Hope to try some someday..

    wildebeest

QOTD: My favorite super hero is, has always been, and always will be, the Incredible Hulk. The cheesy live-action show in the early 80s was my favorite thing on television starting when I was only three or four years old.

  94. June 12, 2007

    KenP

Good ep, GV. You are the man, and our energizer bunny!
QOTD: Plastic Man. Loved the spoof.

First Tocai F. I had was from MILLBROOK winery in Hudson Valley, NY and it was an eye-opener. I think the grapes were from their vineyards in Italy. Good stuff Gary!

*Your Lurking skill decreases by 1 point.*

My first comment! Love the show Gary, thanks for bringing the thunder directly to my iPod!

QOTD: Hmmm, I read so many comics, it’s hard to choose, but right now, I think I’d have to go with Nova. Loving the whole “last space cop making the Earth’s problems seem insignificant” thing he has going on now.

  102. June 13, 2007

    Carlitos

Great stuff! There’s so much variety in Italy. It’s just incredible!

I have to agree with woodchuck and maybe a southern Rhone, or even better, Languedoc-Roussignon episode would be great for the people that don’t know it as well as the value seekers! Please include some Minervois. I had some 2001 examples from JP Senat recently and it was AWESOME! Too bad Solomon is not importing them anymore. I wonder who is. Does anybody know???

QOTD. I always liked Captain America. Simple and effective.

  103. June 13, 2007

    Jim H.

QOTD: The Fantastic 4 was my favorite. Of them my favorites were:

    The Rubber Man

    Cheers

Italian whites are always nice. Is it true that the Hungarians are trying to prevent them from calling it Tocai Friulano so people don’t confuse it with Tokaji? Because, there’s no difference between a twelve-buck dry white and a high-end dessert wine. Nope, can’t tell those apart without a scorecard.

QOD: the studio suit who killed the live action Watchmen movie! Seriously though, what about Dr Manhattan–he fried Rorschach, donchaknow.

BIG G. – you’re a trooper. Thank you for the marathon taping day for all of these episodes. This one was another great educational one into a completely unfamiliar varietal.

QOTD: I was somewhat partial to Wolverine, back in the day with my Marvel comics and Marvel trading cards, before the recent movies. The Punisher was another favorite anti-hero of mine in my comic-collecting days, but I think I also have to give a shout-out to the dark night as my all-time favorite. Something about Bruce Wayne losing his parents at a young age and using his wealth to develop equipment and suits to avenge his parents’ murder through ridding Gotham of villains like those who made him an orphan… just a good story and a well-written character and a perfect irony of never being able to get full satisfaction or closure of his parents’ death no matter how many villains he defeats…just a never-ending fight.
BATMAN has to be my (Regis Philbin-style) “final answer.”

OK, after viewing your website for the first time, I retract my questions around how you afford your wine. When you only see this show as a podcast on iTunes, this show looks like it is done by some guy from his house. I like that you have not made this show a big, annoying commercial for the store.

Great ep. Always good to learn and try new grapes. Will give these a try soon.
Why do the WL notes score the Doro 88 points, and you give it a 90+ score?

QOTD – my favorite super hero had to be Superman. Also like Speed Racer a lot too but he’s not a mainstream hero so most don’t know about him.

QOTD: I still think the best super-hero was the first ever created: The Phantom (1936). Although technically speaking the Phantom cannot be considered a true super-hero, in that he didn’t have super-powers, nevertheless people thought that he was immortal, since he had been around for 300 years. That was in fact just an illusion, resulting from the fact that the Phantom’s costume and mask were handed down from father to son from the 17th to the 20th century.

I know, I know: this is more info than anybody needs. But, hey, you asked the question (:- >)

great show (as always) but just some aussie pronunciations. We say barossa with a hard o as the “o” as in “got” not “crow” and shiraz as in shir-”as” (not shir-are’s).

Never have had any collection of Italian Whites other than Gavis and Soaves. Will have to try the Fuiilis. Funny and nostaglic reading everyone’s ideas of superheros. Just to keep it timely, when I was a kid my dad was my superhero. This time of the year I think of him and miss him. Bet your dad was a hero to lots of you. Always liked my heros with some reality, Bruce Lee, Jet Li, Clint Eastwood.

DUDE…Batman of course. How could it be anyone but the dark knight? All you Superman and Mighty Mouse fans are nuts (and you Spiddy fans just like bad movies)

  144. June 13, 2007

    Fco.

Nightcrawler! One of the most complex superhero’s out there. I tend not to go for the big boys, Batman, Spiderman, Superman (gag!), Wolverine, because they are like…N*SYNC, they have their armies of cheerleaders. I go for more under the surface guys (Ringside, The Kills, Muse if we are going to stick to the music metaphor) like the blue demon which probably would remainin obscurity if it had not been for X2. Great episode!

No favorite superhero. When I was a kid, I didn’t read those sorts of comics. Instead, I read Archie.

Look at it this way. Superman and Batman fight crime, save humanity and all that kind of thing. Archie kisses both Betty and Veronica.

Honestly what sounds most appealing? I can tell you, all that super stuff, not being the athletic type, I will never try. Archie’s moves, on the other hand…

I dig the push to increase trying new types & styles of wine, and an entire WLTV episode dedicated to the new varietal makes the task much less daunting.

QOTD: Batman, because he’s mortal (does that disqualify him from being a superhero?)

  153. June 14, 2007

Thanks to the US Air Force, I lived in Friuli for 2 years. Tocai F. was the universal house white wine, very inexpensive & very easy to drink. There are many other wonderful grapes & wines from this region, many hard to find in the U.S. I’m looking forward to future shows featuring these unique wines. Does Maxwell Smart count as a superhero?

QOTD: I really tried to enjoy comics but could never get that into them (too many NES games to play!) The one that I always latched on to had to be Wolverine though… perhaps it is that we have so much in common: a loner, quick temper, and extremely hairy.

  162. June 18, 2007

    Mr. Ambassador

I really liked your descriptions of the last “Tokai F” sampled today; should I decide to try one of these whites that’s the one I’ll go for!

QOTD – Don’t know why but I always liked the Green Arrow and Green Lantern.

  163. June 21, 2007

    JayZee

I am among the 95% – I will definitely have to try a Tacai F! QOTD: Well, my favorite superhero always was Spider-Man. However, perhaps more interesting was my number 2 fave, the Green Lantern: “In brightest day, in blackest night, no evil shall escape my sight, let those who worship Evil’s might, beware my power, Green Lantern’s Light” ;-)

  164. June 22, 2007

    Mike Erdely

I’ve never had Tocai Friulano. I’m looking forward to it, though… it’s on my list.

QOTD: Before last week, I’d say Batman. He’s got no special powers. It’s just him. And he’s a bit dark, too. Sometimes he crosses that line to do the right thing.

But, last week, I read the Watchmen. *Awesome* My new favorite “superhero” is Rorschach. That’s one bad dude. Of course, he’s a bit crazy at the end, but I like his uncompromising principles.

    in the comic books, spiderman
    in the movies, batman
although the punisher came out with a very underrated film in my opinion
i’m talking about the one with tom jane, that’s the only one i’ve seen
the original punisher, which some amazon reviewers said was even better, starred the big russian from the rocky movie
there is also a new punisher film coming out soon that has a new guy

QOTD: Wolverine. No dobut about it. I always wanted to be him when I was younger. Healing powers, the claws, etc. Couldnt stand Batman, Spiderman, and Superman though. Worst heros ever. And now for something completely different…. the wine! I am def. in a rut. Im stashing away dessert wines like theres no tomorrow….. Which makes no sense because if there was no tomorrow I should drink them, no? Nice spill job on the Russiz, by the way. I think I’ll try to find one of these wines over the weekend and pop it. Hope you got some serious shuteye after this marathon.

QOTD: The Bat-Man. That’s right, the old-school version from when the comics were first released, when he was a shadowy underworld character and the commissioner still wondered whether or not the Bat-Man was even a good guy. So not “Batman”. I like “The Bat-Man”.
