Ah this should be interesting; I just ordered a couple of bottles of entry level Riesling from WL, none of these but still. Thanks GV.

Just drinking a Kanonkop »Paul Sauer« 2002. Great Stuff. Very similar to good Bordeaux but lower prices. Very Old World. 24 Month in new oaks but not an Oakmonster. In Germany: 30 Euro. Thumbs up!

Gary, I’m seeing more of your hand then the label when you hold up the bottles on this episode! Love rieslings, I’ve never understood why they’re not more popular.

qotd: The plan is to break a lot of bread, drink a lot of wine, start some trouble, get a little crazy, laugh your face off, and then cry yourself to sleep.

QOTD: plan? we don’t need no stinkin’ plans!

I’m just starting to get into rieslings and greatly appreciated this episode. A couple of months ago I paired a nice Canadian riesling (Hawthorne Mountain) with fresh fennel and apple salad — the wine was like an extension of the salad. Amazing!

QOTD: The plan?! Well the plan is to figure out how to order one of those t-shirts. Am I internet-deficient? Oh yeah. But when I go to the “order now” button in the little t-shirt area, nothing happens when I click it. Can someone help me out? And bear in mind I already feel stupid enough :)

So riesling is just really great. Those from Germany and Alsace continue to be my favorites, and for the most part the prices are still pretty reasonable.

How did GV come back from vacation in Greece looking so pale? New Lighting?

    QOTD: The Plan?

In 1972 a crack commando unit was sent to prison for a crime they didn’t commit. They promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground. Today still wanted by the government they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and you can fins them, maybe you can hire the A-Team.

Of the three my wife and I tried the 2005 Von Buhl Armand Kabinett Riesling and found it to be too sweet for our liking. Regarding the picture with wristband, wifeepoo left her digital camera behind at the SF WLTV party and Brandon M has dropped off the face of the earth. Regarding the question of the day, the plan has always been to EPH.

hey there GV welcome back, i have an idea make a shirt of you as a cartoon doing your oak monster impersonation and ill buy a tee. it will sell like crazy i know what im telling you.

    Canuckchuk

My plan? Enjoy the next few days, before I have to grade around 90 final exams in a 24 hour time period. Just bought a couple bottles of Heartland Viognier/Pinot Gris to help with the cause.

And to be honest with you GV, I am finding Chenin Blanc to be a more interesting grape than Riesling. I know, that’s sac-relig in the wine world. Next I’ll be telling you that Dave Jennings looked better in Giant blue than Jet green.

    Best,
    Canuckchuk

GV thunder on friday brother. One day back and you hit full stride, hop over the ropes and body slam Oak Monster in the first round, bring on some tasty riesling and the crowd goes wild!!

  35. June 15, 2007

    tarheel17

    Gary,
I owe you an apology. I have two wristbands here (one sent to each of my addresses. . .yeah, I got greedy) and no camera. I PROMISE I will send a photo as soon as I fly back to where the camera is later this month. I really will.
(To make up for it, I also just orderd 3 t-shirts. I don’t want to hurt your feelings, though, so I won’t tell you which ones.)

QOTD: The plan is, in a nutshell:
    Finish writing my thesis.
    Move back to Seattle.
Start buying more wine from local merchants (not that I don’t love WL!)
Get a job to pay for all that wine
Figure out how to store said wine
Maybe even DRINK some wine and
Live happily ever after. (Now imagine my husband and I hand-in-hand, walking towards the sunset in our matching oak-monster t-shirts. . . .)

    What’s your plan?

It’s sort of like Frankenstein and his monster, isn’t it? Next the Oak Monster will take a bride with big creepy wavy hair.

OK, QOTD: I have three wines in the queue for this weekend, and The Plan is to try them all out with my friends!

I’m laughing my ass off now as I just ordered the Oak MOnster Tee today! I’ll put you out of your misery and order the other one…have no fear. I need to spread the word up here.

Love the show today. I’m crazy about Riesling. The Schofitt sounds awesome.

QOTD: Hm. Currently my plan is to shut down some websites and email accounts if a couple of my clients don’t pay up and quick. I’m generally a nice girl, but I’m kinda like the Hulk in that you-wouldn’t-like-me-when-I’m-angry sorta way.

  44. June 15, 2007

    MattyMatt

I actually had my eye on the oak monster tee since it first popped up after the site redesign/Cork’d acquisition. Glad to see we can finally order it, and yes I just did. Was torn between the Oak Monster and Pickles but the Oak Monster is just too classic. Might order pickles too when I order my next case.

Hate to admit it but havent watched the episode yet, but excited for it. Reisling is one of the new varietals I am exploring as I break out of my red mold.

As for my wristband pic look at the thread Denise put up about Vassar Vayniacs. I’m in the front row.

Great show. Love the Rieslings, especially the Germans.

Kudos to your guys who went out of their way to get a stash of wine to me in time to taste for Father’s Day. (The Mahi is quite good.)

QOTD: The plan? Hmmm. To enjoy life, drink good wines, order the Oak Monster and cook some good food on the grille this summer. Simple and sweet.

Cheers and Happy Father’s Day to all the Dads!

great episode on lower priced rieslings. 2005 is the vintage that hooked me on this awesome varietal. in the past, i was like all the other people who diss riesling as junky, over-sweet, white wine. i’m actually glad people aren’t going crazy buying up ‘05 rieslings like ‘05 bordeaux, cuz then there’d be none for me and they’d be priced through the roof as well!

  48. June 15, 2007

    PapaMike

I might just have to crack open a Riesling this weekend with some fresh caught Florida shrimp.

QOTD: The plan is to constantly remember that yesterday isn’t coming back so I better enjoy the hell out of today.

Okay. First time commenter. Long time watcher (01/07). Awesome shows! Tried to pick up a “bull in china shop” shirt, but every time I clicked on the “buy it now” button it reverted back to the same page I was on; same with the antique peach shirt, so I p/u an oak monster and pickle shirt. If I get it in time I will wear it to my sales meeting. I’m “in the industry” so I think my colleagues will get a kick out of it (let’s see how many times I can use ” “).
QOTD: Long story short- my wife and I moved from NY to FLA so that she could attend UF (Go Gators!) for her doctorate in Anthropology and Biology. My plan is for her to get her research published, sell out to the Discovery or Travel Channels and purchase 5-10 acres in Napa, Sonoma or Santa Ynez. She can do her research and I can make my wine. Sorry for the long comment. I have to go now. Attending my VA
    meeting (Vaynerchuck’s Anonymous).

Personally, I prefer the pickles shirt. :P From a visual-design standpoint, the pickles tee design strikes me as being far more elegant, cohesive, and clever than the others. :P However, most of the others are very difficult to see clearly on the site. The pictures with people wearing them are nice, but I really can’t get a sense of the detail. The dodgeball shirt, in particular, is difficult to decipher from the pics on the site; and I think all of the complicated designs suffer from the same problem. I really love the deer shirt though.

QOTD: What’s the plan? The plan is medical school. The plan is to change the world. And the plan is to watch WLTV.

Gary, you must be some kind of seriously twisted masochist. You already get more email on a daily basis than any mere human with your schedule ought to be able to handle, and yet you just keep giving us more and more ways to take up your time. I don’t know how you do it, but I’m sending you the friend requests anyway.

The plan used to be to accumulate the most toys. Now the plan is to accumulate the most wine. The reason for this plan is to be able to retire at 50 something and drink over the next 30 or so years (God willing) the wine I have accumulated.

  61. June 15, 2007

    RieslingRon

I’m a big riesling fan, especially German Mosels, so I really enjoyed this episode. I haven’t noticed any of these brands in my neck of the woods, but I will remain on the lookout.

QOTD: The plan is not firm yet, but is will be low key and on the spur of the moment

    Have a great Father’s Day.

  62. June 15, 2007

    Bossman

Wha???!!! I freaked when I heard only 140 of each design and sweated that I wouldn’t get in on it, these poseurs didn’t pony up to spread the WL love? Sheesh…. I got my five and will wear them proudly. At least I won’t have to worry about someone else showing up at a state dinner in the same shirt.

I’ll confess, I haven’t submitted a pic yet, we have a bit of a skirmish in the Bossman household in that I wanted to photo the cat wearing the sweatband as a hat. The youngest claimed it was too tight and was thisclose to reporting me to the SPCA for cruelty to critters….. back to the drawing board. BUT it doesn’t mean I absconded with the thing just trying to think up something original enough to do the show justice (you certainly don’t want my mug posted, trust me).

QOTD: The plan is, and you’re sworned to secrecy under penalty of death by Two Buck Chuck ingestion, to be spontaneous and not plan past the next meal/wine pairing.

Great! I only knew of rieslings as a sickeningly sweet concoction until I visited Hungary and Austria last summer. Wow, what an awakening. Now I always look for them. Thanks for the pointing out a couple that are a little easier on the wallet (especially after forking out bigger bones for the Grosset Riesling Polish Hill).

QOTD: Keep busting my ass until I can retire and drink great wine every day for the rest of my life! Only 14 more to go . . .

Awesome episode, I love rieslings, Just got back from a trip to Germany, unfortunately I only brought back 6 bottles. I wouldn’t mind seeing some Gewurztraminers being tasted on the show.

    Gary,

Great show. Nice selection of well priced wines.

How about a T-shirt with the oak monster pounding you with a bottle of Cali Chardonnay? (That way you can claim that everyone bought it because YOU were on it!)

QOTD: Sauv blanc tonight – Matua Paratei; Sancerre tomorrow – Alphonse Mallot; Reisling on Sunday. Any more thoughts on the “rat out a lurker” segment? It would be a fun way to give away those “unpopular” Gary Vaynerchuk T-shirts! (Just kidding.)

Great episode again! I fall into teh trap of sticking with NZ SB when I drink white, thanks for reminding me to consider the Reisling. QOTD- stay safe from the oak monster, check the car for my knife in case I hit that deer, then a nice jog through that tropical fruit jungle…

I love how Gary can smell how the pear was sliced “beautifully sliced baby pear”

QOTD: Don’t know. Was just thinking about it. Pinot Noir maybe? Although the riesling episode is tempting me…

  82. June 16, 2007

    vivaitalia

The last bottle was exceptional and only scored a 90? Is that a price thing? Riesling has always been my favorite white grape and i’ve gotten a lot of grief for it. I’ve always contended that it has the best balance of sweetness, minerality, crispness, and complexity. I wish you would have thrown in one from Washington, I think they are making some of the best qpr rieslings in the world.

  83. June 16, 2007

    DomTheSomm

Gary…long time no drrrrrrrrrrrrrrrop! (intergalatic planatary) NEWAYZ, love the episode, I am happy to see you have not changed and still up to your ways on telling it like it is. So…here’s the plan…as a “somm”, drinking wine can be equally as fun as much as it is work….so for those days (many) when work becomes play and you still need to rise to the plate like Bond’s on Flax Seed Oil (yah Right)…drink 1 glass of water and take 2 Tylenol PM’s….no hangover! And you can still rise for Sunday Morning football! Later! DomTheSomm from sunny CALI!!!

Great show! It’s nice to see ya back on the Friday couch. Thanks for the walk down memory lane with the quotes from the T-Shirts. I remember them all and especially the description of Razon. That wine kicked some serious butt and only $8. I need some more!

My .02; More people should check out the Henry Rollins show, that man is bringing a little truth to America IMO.

QOTD: The Plan? My plan? Continue working at my restaurant in Boston, using you as inspiration when recommending wines to my customers every night, until the end of June, then home to RI for the 4th of July (it’s huge in my home town- oldest parade in the country), see dome friends and family, then fly out to LA for (a long time) to work in TV and hopefully start a productive, exciting, and possibly lucrative career… and I’m sure there’ll be room for WLTV every night when I’m there as well– OH and maybe (unlike Massachusetts) I’ll actually be able to take advantage of some of WL’s amazing sales!!

WAIT: What’s THE PLAN for BIG G??!

  90. June 16, 2007

    Brendan McGuigan

QOTD: The plan is complete. The plan is approved. The plan is alive and well. The plan is simple. The plan is easy to follow. The plan is innovative. The plan is meaningless. The plan is working.

The plan is leaving for Paris tonight to move in with my girlfriend, THAT is what the freakin’ plan is!!! Can’t wait to discover even more of the Ville Lumière and hope to see GV pop up there sometime!

Good Riesling kills, I used not to like the grape until you really pushed it and until I had the chance to taste some proper bottlings of top German rieslings which really humbled me…

    Greetings Mr V!

Question of the Day: Plan? hmmm…. my biggest plan currently is building up a nice cellar for the future, with a strong backbone of 2005 Bordeaux. The IRA can wait a few more years!

    John Witherspoon

    Hey GV
I have to admit, I was one of those wine newbies 3 years ago who thought Rieslings were just some sweet wine. Now I love ‘em, they usually make the dinner table once a week when we make Indian food.

QOTD: The plan – I am debating at this moment whether or not to get philosophical on this question or not. I’ll go not for now. So in about 30 minutes I am heading for a 40 mile road bike ride, then going to Brunch for my wifes B-DAY, then going to a reception for my sisters wedding which is part deux from the actual wedding we went to in Key West 2 weeks ago, then tomorrow is part uno of my sister in laws wedding extravaganza, which is the Virginia wedding followed by the wedding in Italy 2 weeks from now. BUSY BUSY!!
Thanks again to you and Tom C for the heads up on some wineries to visit while I am in Piemonte.

    Steve

Here’s a suggestion Gary: some of those really nerdy experts you refer to Jancis Robinson, Hugh Johnson, etc. seriously rave about Riesling, and I am trying to get into this wine myself. But, and without further knocking your self confidence, they all pronounce Riesling with a soft ssssss: now me I have always ZZZed it, but I guess we can all learn — just thing ‘Reece Witherspoon’ and then you too can be a nerd!!

I had the 2004 Domaine Schoffit Riesling Harth Tradition last week! When i was drinking it, I felt like I had stuck a straw right inside a pineapple. I was more on the 89/90 fence on that one though.

The plan is to go surfing this morning and enjoy my dinner date tonight! Great episodes, you are now converting me to Reislings, or whites in general. Or actually it may have been that Vouvray I had with my friend’s vietnamese striped sea bass, cilantro and rice paper, or the Txomin Txakoli I drank that turned out to be a better pairing with homeade Paella than a special bottle of 2001 Rioja did.

The plan is to get my wine cellar finished.

As you know, I love the rieslings, and also liked the Schoffit, though the last one I had in the fall didn’t quite ring the 90 pt bell.

Don’t take it personally about the T-shirt. Though I notice that some people are coming through for you. I’m waiting for a red or blue T-shirt without a carcass on it. Something discrete and tssteful. I’m not holding my breath though.

Rieslings have a mixed rating in this household. The first time I brought one home, my wife almost spit it on the floor. Too sweet for her. Then I had a 2004 Lake Chalice from NZ. Very nice, the apple & pear action and dry. I didn’t tell my wife it was a riesling, because “all rieslings are too sweet” she says. She liked it. She thought it was a sauvignon blanc or a pinot grigio. “That wasn’t sweet” she said. So I bought another bottle, soon to be opened.

QOTD: help my wife build her business, then enjoy the fruits of the labor.

I usually try not to say anything about anybody’s postings, but I MUST say something about some over-imbibing advice above, which is to “…drink 1 glass of water and take 2 Tylenol PM’s….no hangover!”

I disagree. The water is a great idea. Excellent, in fact. However, taking any form of Tylenol when you’ve had alcohol (any amount of alcohol) is a BAD idea. Yes, the Tylenol PM will make you feel better and get to sleep. But: Tylenol is a known hepatotoxin–in layman’s terminology, this means that Tylenol is toxic to your liver. When combined with alcohol, there have been cases where people did this, and then went into liver failure! Just a warning….if you don’t believe me, just Google the combo or check this out :

    http://www.lawyersandsettlements.com/case/tylenol.html

Other pain relievers, like aspirin and ibuprofen (example Advil), apparently aren’t as hepatoxic, but if you mix them with too much alcohol (ie., you’re drunk), you could experience stomach/intestinal bleeding. See:

    http://www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk/articles/article.aspx?articleId=867

So…it’s best to stick to the water……

I’m not a M.D. and I’m not claiming to know much, I just want the best for all of my fellow wine-drinkers on here :-)

Riesling is the one and only! On Friday I had an Ansgar Clüserrath Trittenheimer Apotheke 2004 Auslese, tasted it blind. It just knocked me out as I was dead sure it was an Alsace Gewürz (me! drinking Riesling almost every day …), but then … . I was ashamed and humbled again (that’s what blind tasting is: a lesson in modesty). Maybe it was so strange because it’s made from ungrafted, pre-phylloxera vines? Anyway, it was an eyeopening experience again.
QOTD: becoming enigmatic, are you? Well, THE plan: getting some of these T-shirts over here, then moving, then a long and nice holiday in Italy, then … just nothing. Dolce far niente: reading in my (own) backyard, cooking in my (own) kitchen, fondling bottles in my (own) cellar, sleeping in my (own) bedroom, …

    Great episode as always.

Riesling is definetly my favourite grape, and great wines are still available for a low cost.

How about doing an episode where you try different Rieslings from the same year and winemaker, but from different locations, or terroir? That might be a good example of why the terroir is so important for the end result, since I find many Rieslings showing much of the terroir in them.

Greetings from Sweden! Keep up the good work

What’s the plan eh? Today, tomorrow or 5 years from now? Retiring to Santa Fe in 2 years to spend more time working on Naional Health Policy and Native American Health issues. Tomorrow, well Father’s day from the point of this episode.

A little disappointed in this episode because it implied that Rieslings need to have entry level. German and Alsatian Rieslings are great buys until you get into the stratosphere of Trockebeerenauseles. For newbies some instruction on the labeling of German Rieslings would probably be a great help as the labeling of wines in Germany can be very confusing for the unitiated. Not much of a fan of Rieslings that aren’t German or Alsatian though. Never much taste to them.

I’m a huge riesling fan. Everyone should look up an earlier episode (216) where GV tasted Hermann J Weimer from the finger lakes. It’s one of my top 5 wines of all time. Served it at my wedding. Get it.

Appreicate the riesling episode. Couple years ago when I was just getting into wines took a trip to the Finger Lakes and now riesling is a conerstone of my white wine cellar. QOTD: Probably just to drink more and different wines and play more golf. Lacking a little bit in both.

    Mr. Ambassador

Living in the northwest I’ve tried several different rieslings as it is purported to grow well in areas of Washington State. I was impressed with the “Eroica” collaboration between Chateau Ste. Michelle and Dr. Loosen, though a much better value (as I found out through ordering at Wine Library) is the Loosen Bros. riesling which was available here!

The Loosen Bros. wine was a big hit with those I work with and all who had attended our tour and tasting at Chateau Ste. Michelle (as they had some additional background on Loosen).

Plan is to keep on tasting and gain the knowledge; every new wine sampled is an experience and the more I’m exposed to winemaking and tasting the more I learn.

Thanks and keep up the good work!

love Love LOVE riesling – glad to see this episode. Actually, Riesling and Sauterne were the two bottlings that really got me geeked on wine. I have found that spending a little more ($20-40 range) provides some AMAZING German riesling experiences.

    Hi Gary,
I am a big Riesling fan and I appreciate this Riesling special!
It is not correct to say that the Kabinett from Bühl is sweeter than a Kabinett normally is. There are a lot of German Kabinetts that are off dry to med sweet especially with an alcohol content that low.
Keep going on as I keep on making my way through the entire achieve, Konst

Love the rieslings, been a big fan of German rieslings (specifically Mosells) for a little while now

The plan would be to design a wine to go with every food dish known to man, that would be quite a plan

Ah, a great episode to sink my teeth into! I enjoy reislings and plundered two 2005 JJ Prum Whenluer Sommenler Spatlese’s from a Fred Meyer before someone else grabbed them. Looking forward to popping those in about two years. Although I enjoyed the episode, I found myself transfixed on your right sleeve all out of whack. Damn you! Also, kudos on the Piper figure. Best 80s WWF wrestler period. Much better in the ring and interviews than Hogan. Plus, his sense of humor was (is) great. QOTD: To keep collecting and hording wines and to find myself a lovely woman to share them with. 43 bottles and counting…..
