QOTD: I haven’t had any gewurztraminer. I have a bottle of 2005 Herman J Weimer in the cellar. I will try sometime later this summer.

Another informative, interesting episode. With Gewurztraminer, I like saying it better than drinking it. Maybe I just haven’t tasted any good ones yet?

QOD – PORTLAND ORY-GUN, Baby!!!! How I’ve dreamed of punching you in the face…sigh. Oh wait, that wasn’t you. Still would be uber-sweet to hang out, though.

Gevurz and Riesling are the two most interesting wines out there. Viognier is a close third.

    Greetings Mr. V!

Gewurztraminer is one of those few wines I can’t help but turn down out of hand. The floral, potpourri, spicy aspects repel me instantaneously. C’est la vie!

Question of the Day: Though I admit it’s more of a beer town, I’d love you to come out to Pittsburgh some time. Bring us some of your wine magic to counter balance the evils of the PA state monopoly!

QOTD: Buffalo, NY! Yes, that’s right, Buffalo. It’s gorgeous here in the fall with the changing of the leaves, and there happens to be a Jets game in Orchard Park against the Bills on Sept 30th. Also, Buffalo is within 8 hours driving distance of just about every major metropolis in the North East and Canada so is easily accessible by just about everyone. Consider it!

I’m crazy about spicy foods – the hotter the better!- and I love Gewurztraminer. My fiance also makes awesome black bean burritos with habanero peppers at home, and it’s great with that too.

QOTD: Virginia! I actually live in TN now, in a city which is half in TN and half in VA, but I’m a Virginia girl originally, and our wine industry is growing. :)

  28. June 18, 2007

I’ve got a few bottles of the 2000 Trimbach Ribeaupierre and I here what you are saying about the quality of the fruit. The mouthfeel and flavors are GREAT! The intensity of the flavors, and the finish especially, are slightly lacking but it is a DELICIOUS wine which I would recommend trying.

QOTD: I’m in NJ so I think you should just hang out here and party with us!

  29. June 18, 2007

    NathanN

Only tried Gewurztraminer once and wasn’t impressed. I will have to try it again soon.

QOTD: Another vote for ST. LOUIS

QOTD: New Mexico would be fun – Albuquerque, Santa Fe or Taos.

It sounds as though you received some emotional scars in 3rd grade, but you don’t need to bribe people to like you anymore. And I don’t need a bribe to get some gewurtztraminer. This could be an Alsatian summer.

  31. June 18, 2007

QOTD: How about Europe? Paris would be great, perhaps London?

If you’re ever in Paris give me a shout, I’d be glad to kick you in the nuts or go out for a glass.

I’ve yet to try Gewurztraminer, but it does sound like something I’d like. *puts it on the list* Nice changes on the site.

QOD: I will always favor the west coast, but I’d think that perhaps there’s Vayniacs in Australia or New Zealand who want a crack at you.

Yup, Gewurz and Riesling. Gotta go buy me some.

Thanks for the extra buttons & links to recent episodes — and for tasting some Gewurztraminers! I have a friend coming to visit this summer who drinks little else (!)… now I’ll know what to stock up on for his visit.

wanna hear somthing that’ll make you smile, Gary?

Gewurztraminer is what got me really genuinely interested in wine to begin with…it was the first time i ever really enjoyed wine on the level of a serious wine drinker, and I’ve been loving it ever since.

QOTD: The areas where really good washington wines are made (and where I am) aren’t particularly interesting in and of them selves, but maybe Seattle?

  42. June 18, 2007

    Orion Slayer

    Gewurztraminer…?

I’ve had some, but not a good one. Let’s kill two birds with one stone and try my first Alsace and maybe my first good Gewurztraminer!

QOTD: How about Sacramento, CA!?! We could get Arnold and Maria to stop by for a sip or two. Lots of Vaniacs here and you’re smack dab in the middle of lots of wine districts!

  43. June 18, 2007

    Russ J

Interesting show, GV. I have had a number of Gewurztraminers. Generally don’t like them due to the sweetness component. Just don’t have a sweet tooth. I know they are not all that way so your tasting was helpful.

The new past episode set up is an improvement. Thanks for that!

  44. June 18, 2007

    Shad

I have enjoyed the Gewurztraminers I have had in the past very much. Good show. FYI-Still waiting for the wristband…..

QOTD: How about Phoenix or Tucson…Just because you can’t ship to Arizona doesn’t mean us the Vayner Nation doesn’t exist out here.

Come to Tiger town and see the Tiges play. I’ll take you to a game. 1 behind the Indians…but that won’t last! Detroit’s a great baseball town and I have some jewels in my wine collection (I’m sure you do too!).

Gary, You’re right again. I’ve never had a Gewurz, but I just threw 2 in my cart. Thanks

QOD: OHIO! Your beloved Jets are playing my (not as beloved) Bengals the weekend of October 19-21. Great time to visit southern Ohio!

BTW, Stephane, about 17 comments up, sounds kinda scary. Is that some kind of French greeting or something? If so, I’ll never get my husband to visit France with me!! :)

Love the gewurztraminer. Even more, I love listening to people try to pronounce it. I first tasted it when I was way too young sipping out of dads glass in the early eighties. Gary and I are the same age so I was definitely breaking some laws. I think it was fetzer we bought on some no-cal trips in the motorhome.

Great intro on today’s episode. good educational aspect!

i love the gewurtz. i was drinking alot of it this weekend up in the finger lakes. Had a great 2005 lamoreaux landing gewurtz.

I have had a couple of alsatian ones, but i need to explore the alsace more.

    QOTD: Finger Lakes.

  58. June 18, 2007

    Neil

I have enjoyed the Lazy Creek and the Londer from California. Good wine. I don’t know why, but I usually buy Gewurztraminer in the fall kind of like pumpkins.

  59. June 18, 2007

    CNW

I’ve not tried Gewurztraminer wines before… I’ll have to seek them out. LOVE Thai food – really anything with spice to it!

QOTD: Gary, that is so simple… come to Virginia in the fall. The spa will be open (bring the wife and I’ll hook you guys up in the couples suite for some treatments). Our facility can even host a party for the Vayniac’s who might want to attend… shoot, I bet we could even get you some new Vayniac’s!!! Besides, I’d like to see what you think of some of our VA wines! See, simple!

  60. June 18, 2007

    KW

Too sweet for my taste. Tried it many, many years ago (20 + years).
Visit the SouthEast – I am in Chapel Hill, NC but will travel close by. Places to consider are Charlotte and Atlanta where there are probably lots of Vayniacs.

  61. June 18, 2007

    Dyngus

Come to Washington, DC Gary! You can stay at CNW spa in Virginia…it would be perfect. Im a huge fan of the New York and Niagara Peninsula Gewurtz with Mexican and Thai…

This is my first time to your page but I love it!! I will certainly be watching more episodes. You’re funny and you have a great way of talking about wine. GV,
Another new wine for me to try! Great!
QOTD: North Carolina, definitely. Gewurtz may even go with NC barbecue, although I think Zin would work with that too.

First off, never had this grape varietal before. QOTD: Come to the South! I’m in Tulsa, OK, but I don’t think there are a lot of Vayniacs here. I would go to Dallas, Kansas City, even possibly St. Louis to see the G-man himself. Does that make me a Vayniac groupie?

Or come to Oklahoma! We have wineries here that are pretty good. Heck, we even have a guest room you could use and an extra vehicle, so you wouldn’t have to rent a car. ;) Seriously!

  73. June 18, 2007

    Robert Howells

    Gary,

I think your next road trip should be to British Columbia,Canada. The Okanagan region is becoming world famous for their icewine, also Jackson Triggs winery has won numerous awards for their first class wine.

I love Gewurztraminer and Malivoire wines…and yet I’ve never had that wine…I will need to find it. And 90 points!…right on..good to see a Canadian wine get 90 points that isn’t ice wine. As for where you should go…same as Dave Canada…first choice Toronto, and if that can’t fly then somewhere close like Buffalo.

  84. June 18, 2007

    bryan

QOTD: You should come somewhere in the Pacific Northwest. Lots of fans up here and tons of good wine in this region. Speaking of which, I have had a couple decent Gewurtzraminers from Yakima Valley

  85. June 18, 2007

I have a firm policy of not trying anything I can’t pronunce, much less spell. But you are making me have second thoughts.

    Mr Vigs

Seattle! I have recruited 2 serious fans here in just the last month.

Love the Zind Humbrecht gewurtz. Will definitely seek out the Malivoire.

Are there enough good Canadian producers out there to do a show?

  91. June 18, 2007

    Harley Stan

Gary, great episode, I have been on vacation so I am way behind but Gewurztraminer is one of my favorite white wines.
QOTD- Denver, I will even drive you to Aspen if you want to see the changing colors and the master som( a guest a few months ago the name escapes me) You suggested the bribery.

  92. June 18, 2007

    JamesN.

    G.V.
QOTD.. You should come to Cleveland, this city needs all the good PR it can get. Thanks for doing a show on one of my favorite white wines. The possible food matches are staggering, I like Gewurztraminer with Creole, Cajun, and even paella, and of course as you said Asian food. I often drink the enty level Gewurtztraminers like Chateau Ste Michelle, for 8 bones its not bad. I must agree, for the thunder, Alsace is the best growing region, but the budget always is a factor.

  93. June 18, 2007

    Mike In SLO

QOTD – You need to roll here in San Luis Obispo, CA. Edna Valley, home of Claiborne & Churchill (killer Gewurztraminer), Paso Robles, Santa Rita Hills…its all right here!
Don’t forget Cal Poly if you wanna get your perv on…

  94. June 18, 2007

    amgryger

Never had a gerwurztraminer, but I’ll add it to the growing list.

qotd: I’m in NYC so just for the heck of it I’ll throw my vote out for the vayniacs in the pacific north west: Seattle.

  95. June 18, 2007

    MikeBro

    Great ep!

QOTD: I agree with Autoproxy; Finger lakes region, NY. They have the best Gewurztraminer and Riesling wines around.

    Randy B

I like Ge”vertz” and always have. There are some late harvest vintages out there that are 20 years old and still getting better.

QOTD: Let’s have a Vayniac party in Hawaii. We could set something up in Kauii and wake up that sleepy island. I met a lot of people from Arizona at the San Fran Party. Phoenix or Tucson might be a good choice.

    Ciao

great episode dude – will retract the bad things i wrote for you not putting a CA gewurzt in the show.

“it’s not just hockey anymore” – quality stuff.

go to Florida or poor TS may get desperate.

  102. June 18, 2007

  107. June 18, 2007

Nice choice Crouch. I’d have to agree…I’m from that area, and some of my favorite domestic white wines are from the northern Michigan area. Can’t beat the color up there!!

  108. June 18, 2007

    Darlene O.

    Great episode, Gary, although I’m still a big red wine fan. QOD: Well, I can’t say L.A. ‘cuz you did S.F. How about Las Vegas? I say that selfishly, ‘cuz it’s a not-so-far drive for me, you know? :}

  109. June 18, 2007

    wildebeest

Thanks for the Gewurtz episode. I’ve been wondering about these.

QOTD: Personally, I’d love it if you came to Vegas or Reno, but maybe I’m being selfish. Maybe the Vayniacs should organize a political rally in Houston centered around the shipping issue, and you could show up to lead the parade.

Washington State, especially Tri-cities, Columbia & Yakima valleys.

I still prefer Riesling with spicy foods, but agree that Gewurz is unique & everyone should try them.

It’s gotta be the Niagara area this Fall GV. Buffalo would also be close (give it to Buffalo,………… they never win anything). If its in this area then the Ontario Canucks can join in.
We’ll show you some really good Niagara wines (Rieslings, Sauv. Blancs, Chards, Merlots, and both Cabs). Plus it is a beautiful area (Niagara) in the Fall. We can even do a mini tour of some of the wineries there (just to be different from the other road shows). Plus there are a number of Buffalo Vayniacs.

Come on up for some good old Northern hospitality .

I’m a big fan of Gewürztraminer; I first had the Pierre Sparr Reserve at a restaurant. I haven’t found much else at the wine stores I frequent. I’ll keep an eye out for Canadian now.

QOTD: Check out North Carolina. We live in Charleston, SC now but we’ve had some solid wine from NC. I’ve liked wines from Childress and Biltmore. I can’t stand the over-the-top-sweet muscadine wines but there are some other nice things around.

QOTD: RICHMOND VA BABY!!! I know not an exciting journey from NJ, but we would love to have ya!!!!!

A word on the Niagara Peninsula – ROCKIN’- I was able to get a couple of days there on a business trip in Canada last year and loved every minute of it. I knew prior to go how famous they were for their icewine but did not expect much else. WOW was I amazed, polished reds (cab franc and Merlot killed), vibrant, balanced Chardonnay and of course GUVURTZZ!!! I actually stopped at Malivoire while I was there and it was fantastic as you put it today. Also, Inniskillin Ice Wine is truly fabulous although expensive.

A shout out from my home state to Gewürztraminer, Afton Mountain Vineyards produces an estate grown Gewurztraminer that is simply fabulous, seek it out!

QOTD how about Philadelphia. Good ep. I really like the Albert Mann Gewurztraminer so I will be very happy to try a different one. P.S. Three spills? I think you should use the big azz glass for the show, and send me that Vayniac glass ;)

GV, you’re explosive!! TORONTO, TORONTO, TORONTO. PleeeeEEEeeease come and rescue us!!! You have to stop by and win us Torontonians over. And hey, we didn’t get a bad score today so what do you say?!

QOTD: Denver is very nice in the fall. Its a great city with an exploding food and wine scene, with Vail and Aspen near enough that we can share a little in the snob factor.

  120. June 18, 2007

    yowens44

Good trivia with “Gewurtz” and “spice.” I need to find more Gewurtz for the cellar. QOTD: Boston. I would say Providence, RI (current residence) but I doubt we would get enough votes to bring the GV to RI. So, Boston.

Minneapolis…there is no better place than the land of 10,000 lakes in the summer. I will show you and liz around. We have wine shops galore. Perhaps not a ton of vineyards but we do have a few – they make some sweet wines. If you are going to make another episode on how ‘weather’ affects wine…here is the place to make it.

  122. June 18, 2007

    Brendan McGuigan

As luck would have it, I’m organizing a Gewurz tasting for some friends for Thursday. Excited about getting my hands on a bottle of that Canadian Gewurz to round things out a bit.

QOTD: So simple it need not even be asked. Skip the cities this go around, and come up to Mendocino county. Plenty of great places to stay, lots of interesting wineries and things going on, and I’ll take you out surfing. What could be better?

  123. June 18, 2007

    Mr. Ambassador

You need to plan a visit to Washington State; if not on your next trip then certainly the springtime would be a great choice. I recommend a visit during the Spring wine-releases and a tour of the Walla Walla area too! With the annual wine production and popularity of Columbia, Yakima and Walla Walla it should seriously be considered.

72 = 2^3 * 3^2! Okay, I have had the odd gewurztraminer with spicy Indian stuff, but I’ve actually got a glass of chardonnay (unoaked!) while I’m watching this … uh … look! Over there, it’s an oak monster!

  130. June 18, 2007

    Gary,

I have not tried a Gewurz; but I think I’m ready. Good show. QOTD: The closest major city would be Atlanta. There are really nice wine bars and very good selection of wines there. I’ll have to drive 4 hours; but if you agree to come, I’ll put forth the effort.

I’ve been touting the laurels of Gewurz for years! Well done. You just missed the U.S. Grand Prix Formula One race here in Indy. Lots of Euro influenced culture for that one. We have Nascar with the Brickyard in the fall, though it may not be as nice a match! YeeHaw!

  133. June 18, 2007

    Bobinnati

Never had a Gewurtztraminer, but you’ve convinced me to try one (as you always seem to manage to do). QOTD – come to Columbus, OH. It is in the middle of the state and it’s close to a lot of other cities. Dayton, Cincinnati, Toledo and Cleveland are all within a couple of hours. Pittsburgh, Erie, Indy, Lexington and Wheeling are only a little further away. I think it could be a big regional draw.

  134. June 18, 2007

    Capt M

I’m pretty broken into Gewurtztraminer, in fact I have a bottle in my cellar as now. Concepción likes it much more than I do. But great show. Watched the show and thought of a nice prawns cocktail with very spicy calipso sauce, and Gewurtz to make it company. QOTD: Concepción said Florida, while I said Boston. We own timeshare in the Custom House (MCU). They have a great private bar in the Mezzanine, which may not be large enough for a Vayniac party, but maybe yes.

  135. June 18, 2007

    Capt M

Hawaii sounds so appealing, but spur of the moment thing would rule me out. Spur of the moment for me is Florida, maybe Houston or Dallas. Even Boston would be a stretch, but I would consider being there.

I love Thai and nothing pairs better than gewurz. I like strong litchee and floral aromas / flavors. For those who are looking for a good low cost gewurz to pair with Thai, Columbia Crest makes a decent one for $10.
Hey were’re doing a “summer sipper” wine meetup locally and the theme is Gewurz and Beaujolais. Good timing! Really enjoyed this and the riesling episode.

  137. June 18, 2007

I’ve never tried a Gewurtztraminer having always thought they were more appropriate for dessert. I love Thai and have usually just gone for some suds. This will be something new to look forward to.

QOTD: If NYC is so easy then what’s the delay?

  138. June 18, 2007

Love the Gewurtzraminer – glad you pulled out the lychee reference. BTW, does GW actually age well? I’ve only had one older GW and let’s just say it was not good – alcohol and oxidation. Reminded me of when I cleared out my parents fridge. Can anyone say ‘91 KJ Chard? Almost as good as the 90 Sutter Home White Zin – a classic year for SH:)

QOTD: Seattle! Though actually if I were you, I would schedule it around a Jets game.

    loved Silver Lake Riesling
really enjoy Hedges CMS Columbia Valley.
I am also curious to hear how you score the bigger, local wines…but see none rated here (Chateau St. Michelle, Columbia Valley, etc.). What gives?

It’s beautiful in September. Come before the rains start, and if you come after, well, we’ll find plenty to do. Seattlites just get wet. It’s no big deal. And just think of the salmon and seafood we’ll have for you!

Also, I love it when you go into characteristics/trivia about the grape you are tasting. Makes me feel like I’m actually ‘learning’ something and not just sipping wine and procrastinating doing something else much less pleasant. Thanks!

Big up to the Gewurtz… next to Riesling it’s my fave white. It brings so much to the table. Chard and Sauv blanc pale in comparison. Trimbach is a huge producer and is widely available IF your local wine guys know anything about Alsatian wines, thanks for doing the 2000.

My wife & I have been loving Gewurtz recently as it really seems to hit a home run with spicy food. We met friends out for Indian a few weeks ago at a byob place (always love that) and they were completely blown away with the Alsace Gewurtz we brought. I have had a few underwhelms efforts though which is tough if you shell out $20+. Great show today.

one of the best wine and food pairings i’ve ever had was with a gewurtz…..it was gewurtz with chips and salsa. i thought it sounded crazy but my boss swore by it, and now i do too. i’m gonna have to agree with somewhere south. you’ve already been west (san fran), midwest (chicago), and will be going east (ny/nj), so the only place left seems south.

Besides, you were supposed to come down for the NOWFE and didn’t. So, this fall it will be time for the New Orleans party. I’d be more than happy to help set it up. Its also fairly centrally located, so we could get vayniacs from Houston, Dallas, Jackson, Mobile, Atlanta, etc……and to top it all off, we have the best food in the country. There’s no doubt that New Orleans should be the next stop on the Vayniac Tour.

This wine reminds me of a cute girl with personality and character but too much makeup. Of course I’ve only tasted the cali and wash types, so maybe the Germa/France (thanks for new word and ep Gary) types would be more natural. Dusty, with chips and salsa? i’ll definitely try that. My vote’s for Vegas, Portland or Seattle.

Gary … you’re a nut case! Cucumber salad … my late mother was Ukranian … we did cucumber salad at home. On the Russian thing … my mother used to warn me not to let the kids at school know I was half Ukie … the hate thing would wax and wane as relations with the former Soviet Union did as well.

My first gerwurztraminer was a 1964 Willm. This dates me.

Too bad you drank the `04 Malivoire first. (Although starting youngest to oldest is the way to go.) You had a precocious high school kid sitting in with some guys with PhD’s!

As you may know, when gerwurtz gets fully ripe it sends out a fabulous scent to all the birds and animals in the district. Many (non-Alsatian) growers don’t allow the fruit to hang fully for fear of animal theft and pick early-ish. Your notes on the `04 Malivoire smacked of “chaptalization.” The “fruity pebbles” remark and later the “damp towel” comment all harked, in my experience, towards chaptalization. It was also a surprise to see a winery with a, what appears to be, French name using the German spelling of gewurztraminer, with an umlaut! The French (normally) do not use the umlaut as that is a German thing from 1870 and Bismarck. (Latinish shift away from the OE, UE thing)

After this experience, your palate went on to the austere, aristrocrates of the gewurz world. It seems those two years were not the ripest in that part of the world … with 2000 being similar to the 2000 German vintage.

Anyway … as those great Alsatian wines “languish” on your shelves that keeps the price down for guys like me who just adore this grape … especially from Alsace.

I collect these wines and have quite a few of the 1983s in my cellar… they are still outstanding with great acidity to “keep” them. I invariably drink gewurztraminer with Thanksgiving turkey!

Keep up your fantastic missionary work for wine! The US needs you!

A while ago (while Gary was in France), as I was coming home to Brooklyn from the “dirty Jers”, I thought I saw a bill board for WL with Gary on it. I have bin passing by the same root lately and I don’t see it any more! Was I just imagining (it was after 12:00 midnight after a long hard day of work I could have been seeing THINGS) I thing it was at the toll booth for the Goethals bridge can any one clarify this!

Gary, I would like to know which food dishes always make you think of Gewurtz.

Hey, Boomer, one of my tasting groups in Birmingham, Alabama just got back from a road trip to Bern’s Staeakouse in Tampa. There were eight of us. We tasted wines and ate from 7:00pm until 2:30am the next morning. As I am sure you know, there probably wasn’t anyone in the wine world having more fun than we were during that time.

For those that don’t know, Bern’s has the largest collection (I believe) of great and rare wines in the world….about 1,000,000 bottles, with verticals going back for over 100 years. And the pricing is about the same as commercial wine auction.

  208. June 19, 2007

    Wandamae

Love the GA-Wirtz….as long as it’s not too sweet….and finishes somewhat dry.

Go to SantaYnez/Paso Robles. Some new great wines being produced and quaint lovely town.

  209. June 19, 2007

    MrTC

Only remember ever having a single bottle of gewürztraminer, which was from the Alsace (can’t remember the name). I can still taste the lychee fruit. However, in my ignorance I thought it would be something like a riesling and tried pairing it with fish. That really didn’t work out, and sort of put me off – even though the wine by itself was pretty damn good. Will have to seek some out to try with oriental cuisine…

QOTD: I second TSchampaert, come to Brussels (or Paris/London if you must)!

    KANSAS CITY!

I had my first gewurztraminer after i read online that it pairs well with sushi. and…it did! i think the high minerality went nicely with the soy and wasabi while the melon tones and spice was nice with all our rolls and seaweed salad. I would like to try it with indian or thai food now that GV mentions it.

  212. June 19, 2007

    Winodontist

Never had a gewurtz before, will certainly look into it, thanks for the tip to have it with spicy food.

I will clearly be outnumbered, but why not St. Louis? It’s the gateway to the west. Fall is beautiful here.

  213. June 19, 2007

    KimG

What do you mean by “Canadian Riesling” I thought Malivoire was a Gewürztraminer? ;-) You gotta get that fixed!

Gewürztraminer is one of my favorite grapes too.

Why don’t you make a show on the four different kinds of alsace: Ordinary, Grand Cru, Vendage Tardives and Selection Graines Nobles.

And do respect that wines mature and change with age!

  214. June 19, 2007

    Lawrence Leichtman

Actually, one of the worst wines I ever had was an Alsatian Gewürtztraminer smelled and tasted like hair conditioner but I came back to others and they are good with really spicy Mexican food as well as Thai or even a really spicy barbecue.

Where to go. I would second Santa Fe. I’m there every other month or DC as that is the closest anyone will come to Virginia Beach.

  215. June 19, 2007

    Paul

100% with you on the under-appreciation of gewurz…great company for a hot summer afternoon…gewurztraminer feels so lively, lots of fun to play around with and figure out
QOTD: Yea, I’m close enough to just go and see you in Jersey

  216. June 19, 2007

    Samantha H.

Gewurztraminer was one of the earliest wines I ever tried and I loved it, but I haven’t had any in years! Now I have a craving and need to go out and get some!

As for some place to go, how about the Seattle area? Plenty of wineries and wine drinkers to visit!

  217. June 19, 2007

    E-Rock

If NY/NJ is so easy then let’s do this. Have never had a Gewurz, but I will seek one out now. Let’s do a Vayniac tailgate at the Dolphin vs Jet game in Miami in early Dec.

Gary, Not only is Sedona one of the most beautiful/ overlooked destinations in the US. It is home to some of the best/overlooked wine that the west has to offer. Page Springs (Cornville, AZ) is a diamond in the rough, it is the bling on your ring, it is where I Rluna live!!! Not only will you enjoy the scenery and wine, you may encounter scorpions!, large spiders!!, and maybe…if you are lucky…A snake or two. May you choose wisely.

  220. June 19, 2007

    Drewine

Good episode. I think the first/only(?) Gewurztraminer I ever had was corked which made a bad impression. I will try again for sure now.

    QOTD: Austin, Texas, please.

  221. June 20, 2007

    Jim H.

    Gary,
Love Gewurzt. I say Guwurzt ’til it hurts!
I have had the Trimbach 3 times and it is textbook Gewurztraminer. It is the only wine to pair with Indian curry.

I was wondering what country bore the name Vaynerchuk.

    Cheers.

  222. June 20, 2007

    BobMac

Biased, sure, but come to Napa.

  223. June 20, 2007

    Larry Bartram

Before I watched this episode, I saw the thumbnail and said to myself, “I’ve gotta post a comment and mention that this is the only wine I’d pair with spicy Asian cuisine.” You beat me to it!

Most phenomenal Alsatian Gewurzs that are hard, or usually impossible, to find in the USA, only in France. Here’s a job for the importers. The availability of these great wines IS COMPLETELY LAME. Listen up, Wine Library!

As a novivce it is great to here about and wines I have never had before. This definetely sounds like a great grape to try out.

QOTD: Roadtrip for GV to fans – Got Go with Dallas.

We love Geverz and Riesling. Come to San Diego. Not as good a town (culturaly, food, art, architecture, etc.) as my former, beloved Chicago, but great for tourists. Or come in the winter to escape NJ.

    Boston Ben

Dude – gotta come to BOS-TON. This will take you into the heart of Patriots territory, where you can use your influence in the wine world to undermine Pats fans. We also invented the blue laws (you know, no buying alcohol on Sundays, that sorta thing?) – it’s time for the RED laws (I have no idea what this means). And furthermore, we have a 2-story Wine Tower at the Excelsior here – who can pass that up?

  231. June 21, 2007

    Mason

GEWURTZTRAMINER!!! One of my favorites! I am glad to see you with these, Gary. Love the color of these wines, almost like they could glow in the dark, you know what I mean?

QOTD: I think it would be great for you to go to a place that is centrally located, such as St. Louis, or something. I am biased toward St. Louis because it is only 5 hrs. from me (Memphis). What do you think?

  232. June 21, 2007

    J Crazy

C’mon homie, Japan’s waiting. Vay nee aku sake party! Just don’t even think about coming out until the end of Fall cuz the summer is roasting right now…and gdamn’d humid as a maarucker.

  233. June 21, 2007

    YoungDave

QOTD: Well, as a RI native, I’d like to tell you to go to South Eastern New England and visit wineries such as Sakonnett Vineyards, Westport Winery, Glendale, etc. because (and this is MY fututre prediction) S.E. New England will be an extremely valued wine region within the next 10 years because of its representation of the Loir, Alsace, and Mosel wines and varietals with similar climate. The wines from these vineyards and this area show fantastic representation of the “terroir” with zippy acidity and reserved, complex flavors. I know you hate our Pats, and foorball season will be under way by the fall, but you have to adit that this area has potential, and if people start realizing the quality potential here then these value wines will reach “cult” status soon…

COME TO THE UNDISCOVERED (wine) COUNTRY…MISSOURI! Come taste the Norton, the Vignoles, the Traminette, the Seyval, the Chambourcin. Try a port made from Norton. Come on, try it, you’ll like it!

I’ve never tried a Gewurztraminer before. I’ll put it on my list.

I love Gewurztraminer. i have a wine crush on Taber Hill’s Gewurztraminer when i lived in ann arbor they had a tasting room i would stop in a lot to pick up a bottle, but alas the rent was WAAAAYYYYYY to much and they had to shutdown and there is not a close place to pick it up. Taber Hill is one of the best winerys in michigan.

    Rafael Cardenas

I’m just finishing the first bottle of Gewurztraminer I’ve ever had, so I remembered this episode. It’s a Bestheim 2004 from Alsace and it just reminded me of the lychee martinis I make with shaken Smirnoff triple distilled and lychee syrup… gorgeous!!

By the way, I would probably never have had this wine if not for GV, so thanks man!

    Gary,
Come to Hamilton Ontario Canada! We will take you to our favourite wineries in the Niagara Region. Malivoire is on our list of wineries. There is also the Hamilton Tiger Cats football team which plays in the Canadian Football league. Your two favourite passions, football and wine!

    Josh in Burgundy

QOTD: Burgundy? enough said….(I think this is a little late but that is just me)

Have you ever tried Claiborne & Churchill’s Gewurtz. They produce purely alsation wines from the edna valley region of Cali, and do a pretty good job if you ask me.

  247. December 16, 2007

    Darold

    CKC, and LOVING Gewurtz.

QOTD: I know this is old, but I am sure you have plenty of fans here in Atlanta. The city has a very “changing the wine world” attitude, but can always use a push.

  248. December 17, 2007

    Canadian Chris

GV – ya gotta do some more Niagara region wines! I’ll send you the wine! I’ve even got the title – “Canada does Bordeaux”, I’ll send you half a dozen bordeaux type meritages. We’re like no. 32 on the list in the world in terms of wine production, but we’ve got some stupidly high quality wines coming out of Niagara. If nothing else c’mon up and see us sometime – do the Tdot tourist thang and a couple o days in Niagara.

    Dessert Wine Nerd

QOTD: Seattle, though you were already here some time ago. Hey come back, Im sure you’ll get even more love than last time. Nice to actually see some Gewurztraminer with some really nice golden color. I like the wine but the only ones Ive had are from local wineries and they do not bring the thunder on the color like those do. Once again I need to dig into my coppers and shell out for some wines outside the US. And believe me, I have no problem doing that. Wine rules.

  251. December 18, 2008

    Colleen

Too bad the Malivoire Gewurztraminer 2004 is no where to be found now. I’m in chicago and I can’t find it anywhere. One place in Ontario will ship but s&h is the same cost as the wine itself so I’d be paying over $40 bones! Order some more GARY!

  252. March 16, 2009

    Don

Love wines from Alsace… they really know what they’re doing.

    QOTD: Washington DC

  253. March 19, 2009

    Alex from Montreal

RESPECT Gary! I love the Malivoire Gewurztraminer too. It demolishes most of the Gewurztraminer’s from Hugel that i’ve had. Malivoire has an amazing Gamay too. Seek it out, it will make your jaw drop! The best part about Malivoire is that the wine maker’s name is Shiraz. Yeah, how perfect is that!

  254. April 13, 2009

I only discovered Gewurztraminer quite recently, at a French wine course. It’s been one of my favourite white wines since.
