QOTD… by far the best is the original Wrist Band Offering.

    Oh… and nice haircut.

    Was the haircut that bad?

  14. June 25, 2007

    sfgiants55

No no.. the haircut was actually quite nice for the summer. I guess he went with the faux hawk on Friday for the hell of it before he chopped it off.

    Karl Laczko

Title sounded good, but I got no video either. Still trying.

  16. June 25, 2007

    E

So was it a fauxhawk or a Hoxton fin? I can never remember.

Maybe breaking the Tannat barrier was just too much for WLTV to handle?

  17. June 25, 2007

    Dominus

Kinda weird. There was an article in the local newspaper purporting the Italian white, Arneis, in which I bought a bottle and now the G-Man will review one.

Now, to get the video working so I can watch before I go to PT.

I hit the “play video” next to each wine and I can at least listen to the show. You have to leave the “visual” to your imagination.

Nice episode, but i miss the faux hawk.

Liked the free wristband, thank you again. Can’t wait for my new wltv shirt to arrive though.

Got it through Quicktime (although Viddler seems to be back now). Interesting GV used the “this is the Thunder show…” again. Not had any of these grapes as a main varietal before (Tannat as a minor component of a blend), not sure where I would get them (easily) from either. Still interesting though.

QOTD – so far only got the wristband, that’s enough Schwag for the moment, given I’m in the UK.

  25. June 25, 2007

    Steve-o

Very cool. I love Orange Muskat, but I’d never heard of Black…

QOTD: The wristband thing was very nice of you (eeeven if im still waiting for mine;).

QOTD; looking forward to my new WLTV shirts!

Great episode. Love love love the Cambiata Tannat, one of the most interesting wines to come out of Monterey, IMO. I really enjoy these episodes with somewhat less common varietals showcased. Would love to see Dolcetto and another Charbono/Bonarda in a future episode.

QOTD: The shirts in general, the roadkill shirt in particular. Although I must say, I would wear them a lot more if they were just the prints on the front — I really don’t tend to wear shirts with lots of writing on them, and I would rather have people ask me about the intriguing image and have to explain about the show to them. But that’s probably just me.

  29. June 25, 2007

    Autoproxy

    Very interesting episode…thanks.

QOTD – I’m not into schwag. I’ll take learning about charbono (knowledge…increasing my intellectual capital) as [metaphysical] schwag. Sure, why not.

    waibeans

QOD: I still love the 1 bottle tote bag!

I’ll be using it this Thursday GV.. you can bet on it!!

That tannat sounds RIGHT up my alley.. I loooove the really deep purple reds.. kinda like smoke on the water, right?

  31. June 25, 2007

QOTD: The wristband offer and yeh, I know I owe you a photo, but back off the camera should be here any day (wifeepoo left it at the SF WLTV party and Brandon M is an honorable man when not on vacation). I also have a Vayniac Tee, but by far the most favorite WLTV item is the SF commemorative glassware.

  32. June 25, 2007

    Badger Ann

    QOTD: The wristband!

I would buy the Arneis, even though it’s a borderline pazz. Why not once to try something different?

Dugg Ya…iTunes review is still there (brainer81)

Nice ep, just wondering, how can we properly taste wine without drinking it? We watch you do it every day and I could imagine that many other people are also wondering what you are doing with all those noises you make.

  35. June 25, 2007

    BV

Well whaddaya know – I got my hair cut over the weekend, too — about as short as yours.

Interesting ep. — some good basics mixed in with the various hypes.

QOTD: The wrist-bands. I’ve got two, and I’m fending off bullets left & right.

    Gary,

I found a great Cabernet, which unfortunatley took almost a $20 jump in price. Silverado Cabernet 2003 Napa Valley. W.E. gave it 94 points and it is one of the best Cabernets I have had this year! It’s soooo ready to drink right now.
Let me know what you think!

Banyuls….great with the chocolate deserts. This Southwestern France desert wine. The production process, known in France as mutage, is similar to that used to make Port. Alcohol is added to the must to halt fermentation while sugar levels are still high, preserving the natural sugar of the grape. The wines are then matured in oak barrels, or outside in glass bottles exposed to the sun, allowing the wine to maderise. The maturation period is a minimum of ten months for Banyuls AOC, and thirty months for Banyuls Grand Cru AOC. The resulting wine bears a similarity to port but tends to be lower in alcohol (~16% vs. ~20%).

Yupperz! Thanks once again Gary. I’ve been wanting to try a Tannat ’cause I just LOVE tannins!

I gave you a DIGG, as requested … no thanks necessary: you already grace us with your show!

    Keep it up!

  41. June 25, 2007

    John Witherspoon

    DIGG IT UP!!

I have actually had 2 of the 3 wines, the Tannat (which a lot of VA wineries make surprisingly), and the Black Muscat. I really like a Cab Franc, Tannat blend…like 70/30. Rockin’!! Since I will be in Piemonte/The Langhe in 3 days, I will have to seek out some Arneis. Also, since I am going to miss Fridays ep, can I get a sneak peek??

QOTD: I really like the pickle shirt although I have not bought one. :(

Btw, nice haircut Gary. Is that the “Bob Backlund” doo?

  44. June 25, 2007

QOTD: Free shipping. Beats all. And it should qualify as schwag.

Great episode, even though those will be hard to find.

hello Gary, thankyou on the shoutout and Tannat, VERY INTERESTING! QOTD: Obviously my fav t-shirt (and wine description) is the deer one, and no, I’ve never run into a deer! haha hmm I think a lurker t-shirt would be interesting, and I know that some of those lurkers are somewhat proud to hold that status….

QOTD: I love the Oak Monster t-shirt. But it’s not available to me. I live in TN, and can’t complete the order process. :/

    wineaddict

Great Episode I’d never heard of Black Muscat, I’ll have to seek it out.
QOTD: I’d have to say all the info you put out there for us, your a live dictionary in the wine world..

“Boy” I can’t wait till Friday!

Two of the three for me: Arneis and Tannat.

QOTD: my favorite, and only WLTV schwag is the wristband, and YES, I sent a picture.

  50. June 25, 2007

    Marc

QOTD: Assuming “Schwag” (or is it Swag?) is a tangible thing, then it would definitely be free shipping. If I can count intangibles though, it would be the entertainment value of the show. It’s great to go to work, go work out, come home, and relax by watching the show.

Truth in advertising, the dog ran under the couch when you got excitable with the whole Digg spiel just like she does during thunderstorms.

Killer show, if you could figure out how to bottle that energy you’d put Red Bull out of business.

‘fess up, how many watched that drip of wine go all the way down the label on the Cambiata? Twist the bottle as you end the pour dude to keep the focus only on the star of the show.

QOTD: The bull in the antique shop because it has my favorite wine munchki.. er, merchant on it.

P.S. – Okay I really like them all but you seem especially needy for approval today.

P.S.S – Okay I really don’t know what that sharkfin/guitar pick thing is all about in the wine glass but I’m very grateful you ditched the rotating GIFs.

  55. June 25, 2007

Okay, first I love the show gary…hot stuff.

I don’t know if you’ve done this or not, but I’d be really curious to see what your personal wine cellar / other storage area is like…then again, maybe I’m just a peeping tom.

My favorite line: the reference to shizzle. Can’t get me enough wltv…

I now continue my regularly scheduled lurking regimen…

Hey Gary, I’m surprised you didn’t mention the tannat-Uruguay connection… To my knowledge, Uruguay has claimed dominence over the tannat grape much like Argentina with Malbec….. The first tannat I ever had was an Amat tannat from Uruguay, and was blown away by the cherry/meat/leather/tobacco and under control tannins on that wine…..

  59. June 25, 2007

    KenP

Bossman, That “sharkfin/guitar pick thing …in the wine glass” is the commemorative WLTV/SF Party logo.

    Qotd-wristbands rock the hizzy
    1. Arneis is probably the only grape i have yet to find an ounce of affection in my soul for.
    2. Had a tannat at tablas creek, and you arent kidding about how tannic and deep they are!
    3. YOU BRING THE THUNDER! Keep it up….you are officially DUGG

It’s a toss up between the special edition Canadian Vayniac hockey puck (I am a pucker for tannins) and the t-shirt emblazoned with, “My mom and dad wasted thousands of dollars on wine from WLTV and all I got was this stickin’ ‘ol t-shirt.”

  67. June 25, 2007

Big thunder@wltv today GV. You were en fuego! Made me sign up and digg you! Nope never had those wines, but am lusting now.

QOTD:Just love the free stuff. You, you sharing yourself and your knowledge, free wristband, free shipping, free wine, free love…well, not exactly but close. Anyways, it makes me want to buy the wine, drink the wine and get some more schwag.

Another great episode. How long do you think the 04 Cambiata Tannat from todays episode would last in the cellar? Do you think it would be worth buying a few bottles to keep around for 20 or 30 years like the homies from the SWF do? Interesting show great stuff.I gave you #1 Digg .Qotd I love all the new tees acctually all the tees are top notch.later

I am an iTunes subscriber, so I just did the appropriate thing to do. I also just digg this ep, because it seriously broght the thunder. That Tannat had an incredible color and looked so yummy. I have a bottle of Uruguayian Tannat in my cellar, and I intend to save it for some 10 years. I’ve had it with me for one year so far. QOTD: Oak Monster tee

I bought the pickles tee because I like pickles a whole lot so that’s my fave schwag. When will you make the “wine tastes like poop” tee?

  74. June 25, 2007

    Capt M

Gary, in the trend of trying different varietals, try a Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, from the grape prugnolo. For instance, try Canneto Vino Nobile Montepulciano 2002, WL code 9778. Thanks!

Went to a tasting not long ago where they busted out a tannat – remember liking it quite a bit, and being informed that Uruguay has adopted the grape as their primary offering (and the sample I had was, indeed, from Uruguay).

That in mind, be on the look-out for product from our pals down south, way south.

Also tried a Mencia wine (from Spain); I was impressed enough to buy a bottle.

Nice episode. Cool to explore some unusual and intriguing grapes.

  80. June 25, 2007

    David M Roberts

…Also… NICE Thundercat reference! Mummra (sp?) was the best! I’ll admit to watching that damned cartoon well into my eighth grade year after school. Major nerding out going on.

  81. June 25, 2007

    Tannat sounds cool!

QOTD: the t-shirts are cool, but the wristbands being free are awesome!

  82. June 25, 2007

Echoing Jon B…you didn’t mention cellaring time for the Tannat. Is it ready now? QOTD: Wristbands! Headbands next?

  83. June 25, 2007

Wristbands my friend. Who’s the hot blonde wearing the new t-shirt? Dude, manners. An introduction perhaps? And maybe tone down the friend me up thing, it is taking away from why I watch the show. No offense, please. You are so talented at what you do, please don’t turn the show into a ratings – how good am I compared to other shows – game. Please. I love you man!!

  84. June 25, 2007

Wristband I use it when I play squash!

  85. June 25, 2007

If my usual wineshop was still open I might just go and buy some tannat right now. Love the extra, extra dark chocolate. By the way, a while back I had 10 year tawny port with straight 80% cocoa dark chocolate and something about the chocolate made the port coat, and I mean coat, my palate with fruit.

QOTD: Hands down the wristband: a little story. Sometimes I have to bring work home with me and my desk at home has a fairly sharp edge that is not particularly forgiving to resting one’s wrist on it (my fault because I’m the one who designed it). I discovered however, that my vayniac wristband is perfect for protecting me against my own aesthetic hubris. Its a life saver.

  86. June 25, 2007

    Larry

Get a hair cut or were your ears lowered? LOL Another great episode. Definately want to try the Ascheri Arneis (love lobster). Will give Digg a try just for you.

QOTD: AAAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THE OAK MONSTER !!!!!!!!!!!!! (of course!!)

  87. June 25, 2007

    Winodontist

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a wine as dark as that Tannat. Thanks for showing us new things, never heard of any of them, let alone tasted them.

QOTD: I don’t have one yet, but I like the look of the wine library t-shirt for me, the dark red one. I would have bought an oak monster, but I didn’t like all the words on the back.

  88. June 25, 2007

QOD: FREE SHIPPING!!! No doubt! Even free shipping on the Vayniac TShirt. Not just wine.

    Gary,
first off great job. keep up the enthusiasm.

second, I am confused. I have had a banyuls dessert wine and it was colored like a sauternes or a tokaji. It was young, maybe 2001. Are most banyuls dark young? or do they become dark with age like an aged sauternes?

QOTD: i have only purchased on piece of WLTV schwag and it was the first t-shirt. i am liking the looks of the oak monster shirt however.

  91. June 25, 2007

    wolfie

you’re right, i don’t think i’ve had any of these grapes. unless the black muscat is in ferrari carano’s eldorado noir, which seemed to be a similar style wine from a similar location…

qotd: i don’t have any. but i’m eyeing that deer tee shirt.

    Great episode today!

    Yay! SF glass!

If you ask me, the dandelion is a flower, not a weed, but then again I’m not a big fan of lawns. The United States is full of folks who would call this plant a weed without a moment’s hesitation, but in India the dandelion is a highly-prized decorative flower. Personally, I’d rather have a yard full of dandelions than a lawn, but my opinion is not based upon aesthetics. I simply love to eat them. They’re DELICIOUS!

Gary, what category would you like for us to put your diggs in? I’ve been filing them under “educational” up until now.

QOTD: My favorite piece of WLTV shwag is the limited-edition pickles tee. Mine just arrived today, and I’m totally stoked.

QOTD: I want that vayniac glass! I think you could sell the hell out of those. Interesting episode, I’d have to say that WLTV has introduced me to at least ten white wines that I know love to drink. I didn’t drink white at all when I started watching. I’m enjoying a killer gruner veltliner right now. Back to the QOTD, the deer T kicks ass.

  97. June 25, 2007

The Arneis sounds like a blast. Never ever ever ever get tired of Italian whites or zing zing. But: I am told they’re at their best very young and tend to go downhill pretty quickly. Any truth to that?

If I’d known you were going to be in a Tannat mood, I would have requested this:

    Tips for drinking Tannat:
    1) Decant if possible
    2) Swish and aerate in mouth more than usual and then some
    3) Open a Cabernet as a point of reference of what you used to think was a quintessential red
    4) Do not try to sneak a sample while your spouse isn’t looking – your teeth will give you away

Nice. Looking forvward on more episodes on odd grape varietals.
Perhaps som namedropping on the “Classic” producers of mentioned varietals in the episodes, eg Ch. Boucasse for Tannat aso…

My WLTV episode wishlists – The Thunder-Clash:
    1. Barolo vs Burgundy – rasberry and truffles vs strawberries and truffles
    2. “Froggy” Hermitage vs Barossa Shiraz – the aussie will get an oldworld woop-ass when the French-ies send one of there HeavwWeight “la la”* -wines!
    3. newworld Bordeaux vs oldworld California Cab – The crossdressers challange, “Tertre Rotebeouf” has been through a fruitbom-rocky balboa training camp in a garage in St. Emilon…

I’m curious about these wines – haven’t tried any of those grapes myself, although I have had the regular (white?) muscat dessert wine. Bonny Doon I think it was. Pretty yummy…

Gary… a big time lurker here!
Watched hundreds of shows and THIS is my first comment.
I just pop out to say hi, and congratulate you for a great gig.
I was exited for the tannat, hopping that it would be an Uruguayan one.
After all, what about ANY wines from this country? …. you know!
The small one just below Brazil!

A fantastic one: Familia Deicas Premiere Cru Garage from Juanico (explosive, full, identity driven, complex, top five favorite from South America and the best tannat that I’ve ever had)…. DARE you! :)

Hey there! Do you ever do any features on beer? I know that you have a pretty good selection of beers @ wine library, cuz I buy from there all the time, but I was wondering if you’d ever do a wine library tv video on some micro-brews?

  127. June 26, 2007

    Dominik

    Hey Gary,

you asked for it, now live with it. I just posted the first comment to WLTV in iTunes’ German Store. It’s hasn’t appeared yet, because it’s still being checked for swearwords and other dangerous content. My comment translates about like this (hope my English isn’t too bad):

    Gary pins every wine down

This host shouts, bits the glass or sits in the snow with a t-shirt to test the effect of temperature on wine.

Gary Vaynerchuk is Director of Operations of the Wine Library. In his daily show he tries three or four different wines. But he’s not doing it like an English lord would do. His affections rather reminds of a stadium announcer in a football arena. (No show without the Jets sticker.)

But the most important thing is: He characterises a wine’s aroma so that the viewer tastes it, too. Thereto he often uses unorthodox comparisons and metaphors. And every single one helps to pin the taste down exactly. The comparison with the taste of soy sauce is part of the repertoire as is the image of knocking over a deer, sliting it open with a knive and biting it.

Vaynerchuk also sees himself on a mission. It’s about nothing less than Changing the Wine World. He hammers into his community not to believe in regulations. Training your palate and making your own decisions are the only teachings a real “Vayniac” obeys. (By the way: There is episode 148 in the archive on tv.winelibrary.com. In that one Vaynerchuk shows how to train your palate. Especially the last minutes of that episode are well worth watching.)

Had Tannat from Virginia and not a fan but will have to try the Monterrey version. Never had a Arneis though. May try that as well. Muscats in orange and black are already on the shelves here. Every week one is opened.

    Louisiana George

QOTD: hands down, free shipping is the coolest, as it allows me to try things i otherwise might not order, considering adding $30 per case can make an affordable wine unapproachable, without free shipping

  136. June 26, 2007

    BlankJeff

QOTD: The wristband was cool, but I have to second (or third, or 100th) the ‘free shipping’ comment. I suppose that isn’t schwag, and it doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with WLTV… but it’s WLTV that brings me to the site, and the free shipping that keeps me ordering.

  137. June 26, 2007

Best schwag actually came from the SF Party…those wine glasses are killer. Wristbands are different and very entertaining especially when you break one out at a party in order to drink your wine.

Really enjoyed the espisode. I have never tried Tannat but probably will now. Wine continues to change to new world tastes and demand. Remember when you couldn’t approach a Barbaresco or Barolo for ten years?

The tannat and arneis are hard to find information about on my favorite grape glossaries. The tannat sounds really good!

We generally dodge whites but have recently been venturing into Burgundies and Sauternes. I will have to find the 2005 Ascheri Arneis…my wife is a big citrus fan. Thanks for the pointer.

I am a big fan of Rosenblum wines … but I never would have thought to try the black muscat. I’ll give it a whirl sometime.

Do you have any 20-30 year old tannat hanging around in the cellar we could purchase? I really hate the fact that the oldest wine I seem to be able to find in a store around here is like 1999 and that’s rare itself. I’m trying to buy some extras right now that I can hold for 10 years or so and pop later, but it’s hard on a tight budget. I don’t think i’ve ever had something that has been at it’s peak age. My wristband picture will be coming soon.

That reminds me, QOD: the four-bagger wine tote! There’s room for a bottle, a second bottle (if the occasion calls for it), a backup bottle (in case your bottle is corked) and a decoy bottle!

I had a Ch Bouscasse Madiran 2000 wow the wine was soooo young and mean not a nice bottle. tannat is jaw buster… visited Rosenblum last feb. did try the black muscat in the tasting room. wine was o.k. I found it lost in the world of dessert wines. loved the people at Rosenblum what a turnaround from napa love the zins maybe over the top to some.

Gary, I loved the review on the tannat based wine and I will be buying one on my next visit to WL (HUGE drak cholocate lover here, goes great with a nice bourbon). I did have one question, you mentioned later in the episode that Armagnac is made from tannat grapes. I know Armagnac is typically made from the same grapes as cognac, but from the Armagnac region of France. I have never heard of the tannat grape being used for production of Armagnac. Mostly ugni blanc, colombard, folle blanche, and bacco 22-A. Maybe it’s an approved varietal in Armagnac, but I don’t think it’s very prominent.

Gary, I’m sure you would absolutely adore the Ben Ryé Passito de pantelleria, from Donnafugata (”an estate with a jazz rythm”! http://www.donnafugata.it/). You know Pantelleria, this tiny island halfway between sicily and Tunisia. Wine made of zibbibo, their own clone of muscat d’alexandrie.

Nice episode. Actually, I’ve had Arneis and really liked it. I’ve had Tannat in a blend (Cahors?) but this one really intrigues me. I’ve never had the Black Muscat (or whatever it is called) :-)

Josh – that wasn’t a mohawk, it was a fauxhawk, but it was a good one. You’re right – I’ve never had any of these three wines. Do you think it would be possible to put a list of all grape varietals on the site somewhere or a link to a place where such a list exists on another site. The Tannat sounds crazy, but for $36 I don’t think I can take the plunge. Can you find us another Tannat about half that price that is just as good – there’s a challenge for you!

QOD: the wristbands because they are free… I already spend a small fortune at WL. I need a frequent buyer’s card to collect points or something!!! Besides it’s t-shirt or try another bottle of wine Gary recommends… guess which wins :)

This weekend I had my first petit verdot and my first tannat. I learned of both from you. Both were serious and very tannic. I hated the PV but loved the tannat. It was 2005 Bouza Tannat from Uruguay which I bought from the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board for 14 bones. It was dark, dark, dark, young, not much on the nose, definitely had oak, it had some bite and good mouth feel. I loved it. I guess I should order a couple more bottles and let them age a bit more.

Gary that friends plus was absolutely shameless! But I must admit Id do it as well. All 3 wines intrigued me, which I think is a first because Im not a huge fan of reds yet and have only tried two red dessert wines (both actually ROCKED… a cherry chocolate wine and a pinot noir ice wine). QOTD: Obviously its the wristbands because I love to nerd it up. I do not currently own a set because Im waiting on something which at this point I would like to keep a secret because Im not sure if I can get it or not.
